Chat with Jake Trotter

Jake Trotter
  (4:00 PM)

Keep sending in questions. We'll get rolling in a sec.

Joel (Niagara Falls) [via mobile]

Mr. Trotter, Do foresee a time, say within 15-20 years when Big Twelve teams might revert back to option offenses ? Can Bob Stoops coach the wishbone ? Thank you, Joel

Jake Trotter
  (4:03 PM)

Never say never, but, well, probably never. Defense caught up with the Wishbone, and the way defenses run these days, the advantages of the Wishbone that, say, OU ran are null and void. You can't get to the corner against these defenses. I could see A team having success with it, like a Georgia Tech in the ACC. But as far as the league trending that way, no chance.

Jason (Las Vegas) [via mobile]

What is OU's football rank expected to be at the beginning of this year's season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

Somewhere around 4-6.

Kevin (Boston)

Jake are you watching the softball and if so, how imposing does Keilani Ricketts? Can you imagine trying to hit that from 40 feet!!!

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

It's like trying to hit a blur. I don't think the normal fan watching softball on TV has any idea how fast that ball is coming in.

John (OKC)

How is the 2013 recruiting class looking so far?

Jake Trotter
  (4:05 PM)

Pretty solid, maybe fringe Top 10 at the moment. I really like the RBs. Need to pick it up on defense, which I'm sure Mike Stoops and company will.

R1R (Dallas)

Hi! OU hasn't won in Lubbock since 2003. What do you think their chances are of pulling it off this year? Thanks!

Jake Trotter
  (4:08 PM)

Pretty good, but you're right, that's been the toughest place for OU to play for whatever reason. I don't think it will necessarily be easy this time around, either, but it's a game OU should win.

dave (OK)

Jake, any news on Dom Whaley? I think his rushing will be the difference between 9 wins and 11+.

Jake Trotter
  (4:09 PM)

Nothing really new except that he continues to progress. I imagine it's possible he could be cleared before the end of the summer, but they'll be very careful about bringing him along slowly. You're right, he could make a difference on this offense, especially considering the majority of the other running backs are scat backs.

AJ (Inglewood)

Does Jackie Shipp not do interviews? I think I've seen quotes from everyone on the staff but him.

Jake Trotter
  (4:11 PM)

He doesn't say much when he does give interviews, which are rare.

Nolan (Iowa City)

Since Trey Metoyer went to Hargrave after high school, can he leave after his sophmore year or does he still have 3 years to wear the crimson & cream?

Jake Trotter
  (4:11 PM)

Actually, I believe a player has 3 years the moment he graduates high school. So it's possible Metoyer could leave after two years, though that seems unlikely.

Toby A. (San Antonio Texas)

How many commits did we have at this time last year? We should have a bigger class this year with all the transfers and such, right?

Jake Trotter
  (4:13 PM)

It's about the same as usual. Unlike Texas, OU takes the whole year to fill out its class.

Hunter (andover kansas)

What do you think oklahoma's chances are of winning the big 12 with west virgina coming in and tcu?

Jake Trotter
  (4:14 PM)

OU is still the favorite, but it's not going to be easy considering the Sooners have to go to both places. I think West Virginia is a bigger threat, and will be the tougher game for the Sooners. Tough place to play, and that stadium will be rocking for OU.

DTG (Tulsa)

Do you think Bob Stoops, and Mike Gundy could ever be best friends?

Jake Trotter
  (4:14 PM)

No, but they get along a lot better than Les and Bob did.

Toby A. (San Antonio Texas)

With as much history and tradition as OU has, why cant we get top tier commits to commit?

Jake Trotter
  (4:15 PM)

Like Adrian Peterson?

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Does OKC build on the momentum from last night and take Game 5 in San Antonio?

Jake Trotter
  (4:17 PM)

It's possible, but OKC will have to bring its A+ game. The Spurs will be ready to go tonight. Either way, I see this one going 7 games.

Evan (Nanning, China)

Jake,It's not easy keeping up with the big red in Big Red China. The receiving core is looking thin on experience with lots of potential for upside with the incoming freshman. Is there enough raw talent to make up for all the lack of experience? Besides Metoyer, what new names should fans bone up on for next Fall?

Jake Trotter
  (4:19 PM)

I'm not so sure the talent is raw. It's young, but Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Metoyer are polished players for their age. Throw in Courtney Gardner's upside and the unit has a chance. Could be growing pains early, but by the end of the year, it shouldn't be a weakness like it was in 2009.

charlie (montana)

Theres seems to be quite the different approach when it comes to in-state recruits these days with 3 offers already out to 2014 guys. Is this strictly a new approach or is the in-state talent making this happen?

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

I think it's the talent. OU has taken a national recruiting approach the last couple of years, but if there are blue-chip players in the state, OU is going to go after them.

theMOTexan (ozarks)

Do you see OU being a more run oriented team this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:21 PM)

I could see OU trying to be more balanced as the young wide receiving unit settles. But with Heupel calling the shots, this is always going to be a pass-first attack.

Andrew (Portland)

Why did or did OU move away from its hurry up offense last season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:22 PM)

I don't recall that it did.

Rainy (Oklahoma)

I'm a little out of the loop, what's the latest on Courtney Gardner? Is he on track to make it to campus this summer?

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

He has two summer school classes he has to complete. If he takes care of those, he should be good to go. But we won't know about that until next month.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Can Ricketts keep Bama in the park enough for the Sooners to bring the title back to Norman?

Jake Trotter
  (4:25 PM)

No idea. I know Rickets will compete, though, and give OU a chance.

Cale Gundy (Norman, OK)

Will I have more input in the offensive scheme, playcalling this year? I mean Jake, I'm 40, and a man?

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

You're getting old, Cale. But no, your role isn't changing.

josh (right here)

When does damien williams and the freshman arrive on campus?

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

Different days throughout this week. Depends where each is coming from.

Clint (Texas)

What are your thoughts of Phil Steele having fsu number one? Also Texas number 7 without a established qb in this conference and he said they're one upset red river rivarly of playing for it all?

Jake Trotter
  (4:28 PM)

Not who I would have picked. I think FSU is on that second tier of teams. They haven't proven to me they can play with the elite programs. Texas could easily finish seventh in the Big 12 with OU, TCU, WV, K-State, OSU and company, without better QB play. Texas is a longshot for a national title. People in Austin say this team has a chance to win 10-11 games, but I don't see it right now.

Bob Stoops (Oklahoma )

Why didn't we get a chat with someone on Tuesday. Those lousy horns get two a week ???? Disappointment . We are not going to win the BIG 12 and or a Natty taking days off ? :(

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

I'm like the tortoise. Here every Monday like clockwork.

Joshua (Houston)

Bobby Stoops called the 2010 class the best ever...is it confirmed or debunked after this season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:31 PM)

It's a big year for the class of 2010. They didn't have a bad season last year, but they also didn't carry the team when it was struggling late, either.

Soonerdave (oklahoma)

Jake O/U on LJs stats, 3500yds, 35 tds, 8 int

Jake Trotter
  (4:31 PM)

Over on the yards, under on the TDs

theMOTexan (Ozarks)

Do you see Landry pulling the team together and being a leader to all the new blood on the team. Afterall he's has new recievers this year.

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

Not sure Landry will ever be THE vocal leader, but he can't be laissez-faire with these new receivers, either. Big summer for Landry to get acclimated with everyone.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Under on Ints as well?

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

Probably take the over.

dave (OK)

Given the need at DE will Mike Stoops blitz more this season or will OU be able to drop 7 and still get pressure?

Jake Trotter
  (4:34 PM)

Mike would prefer to drop seven, but if the front four fails to get pressure, he'll bring the heat.

Billy (Nashville, TN)

Hi Jake. Err, umm...Mr. Trotter...(makes you feel old doesn't it?) Is there any real reason to panic about Tim Kish and his recruiting prowess, or are people just overreacting because we haven't signed the top 5 linebackers in the country yet?

Jake Trotter
  (4:34 PM)

Too early to panic. Let's give him the year before we rush to judgment.

Dave (OK)

Another injury question Jake, what news of Aaron Colvin

Jake Trotter
  (4:35 PM)

He worked out today with the team. He's good.

Joshua (Houston)

Is Blackmon's DUI (his 2nd) an omen of perhaps a rocky career?

Jake Trotter
  (4:36 PM)

It's not a good sign. You have to use better judgment than that. I know he had his troubles when he was young, but could you see Ryan Broyles making a similar mistake now? I can't. Blackmon is a good player, and a good kid, but he's got to be smarter than that.

Jeff (Clearwater)

Heard rumors of a possible Nebraska - Oklahoma series.. will that happen?

Jake Trotter
  (4:38 PM)

Word is they're trying for 2021, after the OU-LSU series is complete. Nebraska has indicated it wants to see what the Big Ten schedule looks like for that year before committing, but it probably will depend on what the college football landscape looks like then, as well.

braden (okc, oklahoma)

when will kameel jackson return?

Jake Trotter
  (4:40 PM)

Technically he's back with the team. I wouldn't be shocked if he redshirted next season, with all that happened in the spring with his attendance. I guess it's possible he works his way into the rotation next season, but he's got a big doghouse to work out of first.

Joaquin (OKC)

How do you see it playing out with the expansion rumors? Who are your favorites to come to the Big XII?

Jake Trotter
  (4:41 PM)

Florida State and either Clemson/Miami/Virginia Tech would be a coup. I have no idea if they'll actually come, but that would be the best get the Big 12 could hope for.

Cole (Arkansas)

How to do you see us Matching up against the Irish this year. Will those TE's be problematic for us?

Jake Trotter
  (4:43 PM)

The tight ends won't be able to do much damage without a reliable QB. And who knows where the Irish are with their QB situation right now. Either way, OU is the better team. I like the Sooners' chances.

Scott (Dallas)

Texas 7th in Big 12??? I guess defense and running game means nothing to you? Considering how weak ou looks in both, it makes sense you would ignore both.

Jake Trotter
  (4:44 PM)

I didn't say Texas would finish seventh. I said it's possible. By the way, Texas had a good defense and good RBs last year, and finished 5-7. Until they get better at the QB position, they're going nowhere in the Big 12. Agreed?

Joshua (Houston)

Does the Pirate pull off any upsets in the Pac-12 this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:45 PM)

I doubt they beat an Oregon or USC, but they'll be competitive from the get-go.

theMOTexan (Lost In Missery)

I'm hoping my Horns will start running the diamond, do you think OU will run it more this year? If not can you have Bobby give Mack a call and tell him how to run it. Well I guess actually he needs to tell him how to run any type of offense, ours is bad.

Jake Trotter
  (4:46 PM)

OSU was actually the first team to run it. OU stole it from them, then shelved it last year. I don't think Heupel is a fan of the formation, even though it was highly successful in 2010 with DeMarco Murray, Roy Finch and Trey Millard.

Scott (Dallas)

5-7 was 2 years ago. WOW!Oh, and 8-5 last year when #1-3 RB got hurt...win 2 more with health and added the best RB from Texas since AP.

Jake Trotter
  (4:49 PM)

Sorry, meant to type in 7-5 (plus the bowl game) on that last answer. And anyone can use the injury excuse. You don't think OU wins more games if Ryan Broyles and Dom Whaley don't go down with season-ending injuries? It's part of the game.

Kevin (Boston)

Ricketts fastball is the equivalent of a 98MPH baseball pitch...pure smoke...thanks for answering a softball question

Jake Trotter
  (4:49 PM)

No problem. It's a great story. I hope they win it all. Should be a phenomenal environment at Hall of Fame tonight.

Soonerdave (oklahoma)

TREY MILLARD all Im saying

Jake Trotter
  (4:50 PM)

To me, he needs 7-8 touches a game, minimum.

Toby A. (San Antonio Texas)

Tell Scott, they still lost to OU

Donnie (SoonerNation)

Doesn't Gardner have 3 classes to do this Summer? Will you be trying to keep up with LJ this Summer to see how the workouts are going with the new WR's?

Jake Trotter
  (4:50 PM)

Yes.

Cole (Arkansas)

How to rank Heupel among OC's, do you see him among the elite down the road?

Jake Trotter
  (4:51 PM)

If he's half as good an OC as he's been a QB coach, then yes.

Kris (Des Moines)

Not that I think it will ever happen but even entertaining the thought of having both Texas /-\ and ND in our conference makes my skin crawl. Having two self important babies that worry more about money than winning is a recipe for disaster.

Jake Trotter
  (4:52 PM)

Having Notre Dame and Texas in the Big 12 would mean more TV money for everyone, and another huge home game every two years. Not a bad thing at all.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Is the Gardner situation going to play out like Metoyer did last summer? Hoping he gets eligible in time, but eventually having to wait until the next year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:53 PM)

It could, but Gardner's chances seem to be better than Metoyer's were.

Joshua (Houston)

texas has had the next Adrian Peterson 'bout 3 years running...hate to bust your bubble, ut...

josh (right here)

To Bob. How has rushing the recruitment worked out for Texas. GarretGilbert anyone. I like that OU takes it's time in evaluations.

Jake Trotter
  (4:53 PM)

Man, is it Red River week already?

Cole (Arkansas)

What is the time frame to expect to see the defense get comfortable in Mike Stoops methodology?

Jake Trotter
  (4:54 PM)

The scheme is so similar to the previous regime, the learning curve is negligible.

Toby A. (San Antonio Texas)

Jonathan Gray is a good back but no AD, plus he has bad shoulders!

scott (Dallas)

didn't lost to ou. we got DESTROYED. not the point though. keep discounting a team with the best defense in a conference and the best running game with a caretaker at QB. - Nick Saban

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

Are you suggesting that David Ash is a caretaker QB?

Kris (Des Moines)

The softball to baseball speed conversion is always my favorite. What a pointless statement. I am huge baseball fan and not much of a softball fan, but I watched both softball games this weekend and it took me two seconds to see Ricketts is filthy..No need for a pointless conversion for ligitimacy...Thanks for posting my PSA

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

Yeah. You put the OU baseball team against Ricketts and they're going to whiff a lot.

Cole (Arkansas)

Mike Stoops had shut down defense back in our 2000 Championship run, do you see him achieving that level again in this pass happy league?

Jake Trotter
  (4:56 PM)

The league is completely different. Different standards for what constitutes shut down. If you hold someone to 20 points, that's not a bad day.

scott (Dallas)

josh. GG was a huge bust. But be careful throwing stones. Your best Rb last year was a walk on. nice "taking time" on Rb recruiting you got there.

Jake Trotter
  (4:56 PM)

Fair point.

Joaquin (OKC)

Getting off football for a sec, how do we look as far as basketball is concerned? I like Lon Kruger and the moves he's made! Anything on recruits coming in and how do we look on getting clark in crimson?

Jake Trotter
  (4:57 PM)

I saw Lon eating at the new Norman Chuy's today. I like Lon, too, and everyone I talk to in college basketball says he'll make OU an NCAA tournament team.

sammy (Dallas)

I know that coaches touted Metyoer(sorry on spelling) in the spring but who else do you see stepping up I would like to see Stills step up but after the Broyles injury last year he struggled and played pretty poorly. Who is going to be a leader and step up this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

It's got to be Stills. There's no one else. The other upperclassmen WRs are suspended. I could see any of the incoming freshman WRs becoming that guy in time, but that's asking a lot of true freshmen.

Jake Trotter
  (5:01 PM)

guys, that's all the time we have for the chat. Thanks to everyone, including Scott, for making it lively. We'll do it again next week, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week, and be sure to check our forum for all the latest from OU's high school camp this past weekend.
