Fantasy MLB with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Good morning, gang! We've got an hour of fantasy chattage ahead of us, so let's get right to it. Second cup of coffee in hand... who is up first?

Bob (NY)

Is Ichiro too valuable to drop outright or am I just hanging onto name value?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

I think he is certainly droppable. Sure, he's posting some decent overall value due to the SB total, but if he were a third-year journeyman with the same stats, you would not be asking.

Nick (Chicago)

10 team mixed, H2H - Drop any of these guys for Trevor Bauer? Latos, Paulino, T. Hudson, Motte, D. Fowler

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Short answer is no. I get that people are excited by Bauer, and if you have the roster room to stash, then by all means do so. But we get so excited with these unproven youngsters to the point where we overreact.

dustin (wisconsin)

ROS Alex Rios or Cam Maybin

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Ricky (Boston)

What are your feelings on the newest Felix news?

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Missing Wednesday start with back issues... any time a pitcher is bumped, you should pay attention, but when it is the back and not the arm, I tend to (given the limited info we will be told by the team) lean towards believing that rest will be capable of fixing the problem.

Dave (NC)

Hi AJ, I'm with you on Bauer...BUT if you don't make a move for the young guys you miss out on production like what Trout and Harper are providing this year, Hosmer last year, etc. There's surely more busts than immediate studs but a guy like Bauer sure seems legit. Would you feel differently in a 12 team league? Thanks

AJ Mass
  (11:09 AM)

I don't disagree, but once Bauer is called up, then it's Myers and then it's the next guy... you can't have them all and you can't win with an exclusive collection of "future stars". Reach for one, be my guest. But the "serial reachers" who feel they can't win without these guys need to take a step back.

Mike (Chicago)

ROS: Desmond or Seager?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

Kyle for me.

Todd (From across the room)

You think Adam Jones maintains his pace and is top 5 end of year?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

No, but I do admit I underrated him in the May re-ranks. Certainly I can see a top 25 finish for sure, and perhaps top 10.

Nuke LaLoosh (Durham)

ROS = Allen Craig OR Dexter Fowler?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Craig. Health the only concern.

Justin Smoak (Seattle)

Have I finally arrived? I've been playing well lately and even taking walks!

AJ Mass
  (11:13 AM)

Not sold yet, sir.

James (NJ)

Scherzer, Moore, Jaime, and Paulino. Who do you drop?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Of that foursome, I'm the least impressed with Moore thus far. That said, Garcia's elbow issues do concern me enough to consider him as the odd man out.

Matt (NC)

How about a couple starting pitchers that you're buying on right now with top 40-50 potential ROS that are outside that range today?

AJ Mass
  (11:16 AM)

Friedrich and Diamond spring to mind.

Brian (Baltimore)

Paulino Or Parker

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

Paulino. Love what Parker did vs Texas, but my jury is still out for ROS there.

Adam (Florida)

Trade Hunter Pence for Justin Upton?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

No, I'd stick with the good Captain.

Duff (Chicago)

Hosmer or Sale long term?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

Can't I like both of them? A bit apples and oranges, but I'd rather take my chances with Sale right now.

Scott (MI)

Are there any stats you look at for someone who's under/over-performing on steals, like BaBip or Line Drive rate for Average or HR/FB for HR? Or do you think steals don't quite work that way?

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

I'd say a look at OBP is the biggest factor. Can't steal if you don't get on base. And certainly the percentage of successful SB to CS is telling... but situations and red lights can often derail even the best of baserunners. There's no one stat to look to.

Christian (Richmnd)

What do you see Cliff Lee doing ROS? Thanks AJ

AJ Mass
  (11:23 AM)

Business as usual.

Matt (Boise)

There hasn't been much pub for Jason Kipnis but he's been amazing so far with combination of power and speed. Obviously he won't keep it going at this pace but what are reasonalbe final numbers?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

Not much on specific projections but indeed, VTD in top 10. However, of the top 25, he's probably the least likely to sustain, perhaps along with Starlin Castro.

Michael (Dallas)

What is the ROS value for F. Rodney? Time to sell high?

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

If you can improve your team in other areas, no reason not to sell anyone. Right now it's Rodney No. 1 (in RP) in a tier by himself with a bit of a drop to Chapman at No. 2. He's not going to get any MORE valuable.

Melk Man (San Francisco)

The Melkman Cometh = In H2H would you Trade Melky Cabrera for any of these SPs-- Cliff Lee, Greinke, or David Price? If so who would be your order preference? Thoughts? Owner said I could have my pick of the litter.

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

Not Price, but either of the other two I would.

Erik (Virginia)

I know you're not supposed to get emotional about fantasy, but doesn't it make you mad when bad teams refuse to trade vets for prospects in dyntasy?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Not in the first half of the season, so long as they are continuing to be active. As the trade deadline approaches and it becomes pretty clear they won't win this year, then it would trouble me more that they don't take advantage of that kind of move for the future.

Jon (Upper Iowa)

Would you keep Jimmy Graham in a 2 TE league over AP coming off the injury? I swear I'm having a hard time deciding this. It is a two year contract, and we start two players at each offensive position. (2 keepers; Rodgers is the other). Thanks.

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Football is fast approaching! Right now, with so much uncertainty at the RB position, I would definitely keep Graham in a 2-TE league.

jose smith (miami, florida)

lance lynn for hris young?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

I can "C" making that trade.

John (Chicago)

Is Dempster for real this season? Was just dropped in my league and I'm considering picking him up.

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

If he weren't winless, he'd not be on the wire. Too much weight given to the win-loss record which is not in his control.

Josh (Nc)

Hey If I traded Tim Limcecum, what type of players could I get in return?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

Probably not enough to make the deal. If you're looking to unload Tim, you're dealing from a position of weakness, which makes it harder to pull the trigger. Would you take Loney and Plouffe for him? Because that's likely the kind of offer you'll get right now, fair or not.

Tree (NY)

AJ, looking forward to reading your book. ROS, who do you like at 1B, Youk or Hosmer?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

I'm going to say Hosmer, but it is close.

Mr. (Mister)

Is Ervin Santana droppable now? Brutal.

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

Now? Then.

Pat (Boston)

Can you explain why you put Rodney so far above Chapman? Hasn't allowed an ER ALL YEAR, and his K/9 is silly.

AJ Mass
  (11:39 AM)

Sure, but saves is 20 percent of an RP's value in roto leagues and that tips the scales.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

Looking for a Chisenhall answer, how shallow a league is he viable? how bout keeper leagues?

AJ Mass
  (11:42 AM)

I think he's definitely ownable in a 10-team mixed league, at the very least for bench depth.

Dustin (Albuquerque)

Was offered Altuve for my Maybin. I would then drop R. Weeks. Do the deal?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

Twice if I could.

Luke (Minnesota)

ROS J. Montero M. Montero or Avila?

AJ Mass
  (11:44 AM)

Avila, Jesus, Miguel

Mitch (Washington)

The real-baseball draft is underway! For keeper-leaguers like me, are there any of the top draftees that are worth adding now? Or should I leave that speculation to the other owners?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

Given the huge lag time between a good 95 percent (if not more) of these guys being drafted and then making the big leagues, I tend to not pay too much attention to yesterday's proceedings. In terms of fantasy, it has little impact to how I manage my 2012 team, even in a keeper.

Jed (West Dennis, MA)

AJ not to beat a dead horse but Chapman just got the closer gig, he'd have double digits if Marshall wasn't closing games out until recently.

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Not disputing this at all... the original question was that of selling high on Rodney or not and I merely stated the YTD rankings, which have him at No. 1 - which will not get any higher. It was not to say that I wouldn't rather have Aroldis going forward.

tomas (miami)

what do you know about Teheran being called up sometime soon?

AJ Mass
  (11:51 AM)

Have heard nothing from the team that indicates any imminent move, though clearly the performance at Triple-A, including a recent complete game victory makes him an ideal candidate should there be an opening.

Dan (CA)

ROS LaHair,Rasmus, D.Young

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

That's the order.

Ben (Minneapolis)

D Holland or Samardzija?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

Samardzija by quite a bit.

Justin (Iowa)

Jed or J Rollins ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Let me hear you tell a story 'bout a man named Jed.

Mike (TOR)

Kemp or Cutch in a Keeper?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Hard to go wrong with either, but I'd say Kemp.

Todd (Philly)

who do you have more faith in a ROS turnaround - Aramis Ramirez or Ichiro?

AJ Mass
  (11:54 AM)

Mark (NY)

ROS - Parker, Doubront or Niese

AJ Mass
  (11:55 AM)

Parker for me.

Tree (NY)

Fantasy ethics questions: this season started off with 2 games in Japan. After those games happened, I drafted the two pitchers that won, then dropped them immediately after receiving credit for their wins. Savvy drafting, a little underhanded, or worse? My guess is that MLB will do this again next year, and I want to know your thoughts so we can have a policy going forward.

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

I'd probably put a rule in place that either froze rosters between Japan and the start of the regular season or (barring that) forced you to keep those guys claimed in the interim until the end of the first scoring period, but other than that, fair game.

Fitzy (Ma)

AJ Mass
  (11:58 AM)

Perez then Reed

Daniel (NY)

What do you think of the resurgent Brian Matusz?

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Still spot starter material.

joey (philly)

If Pedroia plays tonight do I plug him in? wait???

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

Put him in. The worst he does in an 0-for-4. If he were a pitcher, he could set your ERA/WHIP back for a month.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

That's the whistle, gang! Thanks to all for your questions. We've got a Vokle chat with Tristan set for 2pm. Otherwise, there's always the Twitter (@ajmass). Until the next time, as always... good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
