Is Kurt too curt? Is IndyCar's Randy Bernard Twitter nuts? Will new Pocono be better? Is Cousin Carl done? Our Turn 4 answers tell all: http://tinyurl.com/7rhztpj
True or false: Kurt Busch won't have a job next year.
I think he still has time to right the ship and get a good ride in 2012, but last weekend was a huge step backward.
Terry. Agree or Disagree. Sunday's Dover race was about the most boring NASCAR race there could have been. It was like watching 380 laps of practice, 10 laps of actual racing (well, almost) and 10 laps of caution. What has happened to the Dover race we all used to like???
I didn't think it was that bad Bill, certainly not as uneventful as some other races this season. It started with a bang, literally, with a 12-car wreck. And there was some up-front passing. We probably would have seen more if not for Gordon's loose wheel.
Hello Mr. Blount. I wanted to thank you and the rest of the guys for these chats you do. As a die-hard David Ragan fan, I was curious if you believe he will be driving a more competitive car next year, whether it be cup or nationwide?
Thanks Nick. His chances get better every time Kurt opens his mouth. But Newman also may be looking for another ride next year, which doesn't help David. As of now, I don't think he's done enough this year to get a big-time ride in 2013.
WHATS GOING ON WITH DODGE FOR NEXT SEASON ?
NO ONE KNOWS ANGRY CAPS DAVE. They have talked to Andretti about starting a team. RPM might go back to Dodge, but I doubt it. And Ganassi says he won't do it, which I think is a mistake. Right now I would say Dodge is in trouble as far as staying in Cup.
Hey TB! How many lives does KuBu have with cup ride? His rant with Bob almost seemed stoic and scripted as 10 mins prior he was really funny with the "can't even pick my nose right" comment - thoughts? Finally, the reporter KuBu took his anger out on said he did not feel threatened and did not advocate the suspension....what is the bigger message NASCAR is sending. All a shame as KuBu was priceless at 'Dega. Thanks!!!
I agree about that particular incident Laura. Kurt was very calm. I've had atheltes say things to me much worse in a much angrier tone over the years. The problem is Kurt just doesn't get it. He knows he has to mind his manners and he just can't do it. He left NASCAR no other option or people would continue to say probabtion is meanlingless.
Prediction: Kurt Busch is gone from Phoenix Racing by the weekend, True or False?
I think that's a strong possibility.
Welcome to our neck of the woods this week at Pocono. It is a great place to be if you want to do nothing but veg, otherwise...Has there been any other drivers in NASCAR, with talent like Kurt's, who have self imploded so completely? Other than staring in an advertisement about road rage I don't see a sponsor going near him
I won't be there Frank. I head to Fort Worth tomorrow to cover the IndyCar race at TMS this weekend. I've seen many angry athletes over the year. Barry Bonds probably would top the list. Foyt went ballistic almost every day years ago. Ralph Sampson always was mad when I covered him. But this is a different era. And everyone has a cell phone to capture the moment. Kurt knows he needs to behave, but he just can't help himself.
I think a lot of people in this media are deliberately provoking Kurt Bush. Look at the Speed website there is a poll asking fans "Which is your favorite Kurt Busch moment?" the only choices are negative...it is a better story than how good he is doing with his brother's car and in an underfunded Sprint cup car. Give the guy a break, for God's sake!!!
Kurt is his own worst enemy Ted. He is an extremely talented driver and all he needed to do this year is drive the cars and be quiet so he could get a quality ride next year. But he couldn't do it. No one is provoking him.
Hey Terry, Do you see Clint continuing to climb up the charts or will he fall back out of the top ten and have to try and win a couple races to make the chase?
I see Clint battled Carl for that 10th spot. Both of them need to win, but Carl might get there first.
I may be the only 88 fan who just very very pleased with his runs and not mad hes not winning. Should we just get off his back and be happy top 5's every week after what he was running?
Absolutely. The man as more top 10s this season than any other driver, and he's the only driver who has finished on the lead lap of every race. The win will come as long as he keeps doing what he's doing.
HOW bout logano he lookedecent this weekend
Joey had a nice weekend in Dover, but I still wish he would stick to Cup. I was disappointed to see another Cyo regular win when Ryan Truex raced so well, 10 days ater an appendectomy. I tweeted about it and people said to me, "What's Joey supposed to do, not try to win it?" No, he's supposed to not be in it.
How soon before someone will punt Logano in the Nationwide series?
The NW regulars can't afford to do that if they are running for points. Thats' the problem. Cup guys have nothing to lose. NW regs do.
Hi Terry. What do you think has happened to David Reutimann? Yes he is still driving but it seems he has gone backwards the past couple of years. He was a solid race car driver there for awhile but his results have dropped. Any thoughts?
He doesn't have good equipment now, so it's almost impossible for him to look good at this point.
Do you think we could see Aric Almirola as a first-time winner in Cup this year? I think things are working out really well between him and Mike Ford and while I don't think he has enough to dominate a race yet, I could see him sneaking in and winning one on strategy like Regan Smith did at the Southern 500 last year.
Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Hiring Mike was a brilliant move by RPM and he's got Aric running well almost every week.
Please break out the crystal ball. Will reutimann do better this week being placed into different equipment? As good as kurt has done? Is the equipment better or was kurt just doing a great job with what he had?
I think that's mostly Kurt, but Reuti might have a decent run in the 51.
How about this new rule, if you are 10 or more laps behind the leader and in the garage your day is done? It would save the teams money and keep the wrecked cars off the track. This would be especially good for low budget NW & Truck teams.
Easier way to fix it is not award points for finishing lower than 25th.
Could Kyle bring KBM up to cup to supply Kurt a job next year?
I don't think Kyle is ready to be a Cup owner.
Terry, Logano needs to stay active in Nationwide. He's going to be back there full time soon enough.
And I'll be fine with it if he is NW only next year, a la Elliott Sadler. Until then, I don't like it and never will.
Texas is always fast and furious for Indy cars...do you think they should be racing there? We saw Conway fly into the fence at Indy..
Yes I do. I think IndyCar will make a huge mistake if they leave all high-speed, high-banked ovals. They series needs to be in markets like DFW, and that track has produced phenomenal races. Blaming the track is wrong-headed in my view. Fix the cars (which they have with the new chassis) and slow down the cars. But if IndyCar goes to only short ovals and just road and street courses, they are headed right back down the CART path.
Hamlin said one reason for less cautions is that drivers were points racing. I don't agree because the All-Star race didn't have points and no wrecks either.
I think Dale Jr. said it best last weekend when he said it's more about the economy and drivers know they could be out of a ride if they tear up a lot of equipment.
Hey Terry - when will MWR win a race? Who will it be? Thanks!
Easily the most improved organization in Cup this year and they are close to winning. I think Truex and Clint both are capable of winning soon. And old Mark might get a victory this season.
Didn't NASCAR's action suspending Kurt only confirm what Kurt said last week in his ESPN interview with Marty, that there is a double standard? 1 set of rules for The Busch Brothers and then rules for everyone else?
Absolutely not. Kurt know he was on probation and needed to act accordingly. He painted NASCAR into a corner.
Hi Terry!!! Who do you have winning on the newly paved track this week? Thanks!!
Molly, you should be working, not asking chat questions. I may have to dock that from your pay. It's all an unknown for the new Pocono, but I'll be an old Pocono star in Hamlin.
Terry. Just wanted to echo that your comments on all things NASCAR are probably the most accurate there is. Really appreciate your insight in the Chat. It always makes the long NASCAR season more bearable being able to read and hear from someone who has always seemed to be dialed in.
Thanks you Bill. I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with me on everything, but I will honestly tell you what I think and write columns that provoke thought. That's my goal.
Did you catch Dario on Letterman last night talking about Dave's driver Takuma Sato?
Sorry I missed that. I bet it was funny. I may have to check it on with my On Demand.
When there is a debris caution, why don't they show the debris on TV every time?
Sometimes it gets picked up before thwey have a chance to show iot. Sometimes its hard to find.
Why don't either of the Pocono races have sponsors?
I don't really pay much attention to who sponsors a race, but would you sponsor the Pocono race? It's tough for any race to get title sponsors these days.
are you going to watch the prelude to the dream this year?
I'll be a a dinner event and won't be able to, but I hope it goes well.
Any chance NASCAR next year adds more points for wins or for the top 3?
Not likely. They got the best point finish in history last year with a dead heat.
How about Danica patrick? She continue to impress, doesn't she?
Frankly Kevin, I'm not all that impressed this year. She needs to step it up.
is kurt buschs only shot next year with brothers car?
Way too early to make that call.
Who is your favorite driver to interview (present day)?
Probably Jeff Gordon. Always helpful, always willing to say what he really thinks without being belligerent, no matter how bad his day was.
Wow, no love at all for Pocono in your Turn 4 question.
I call it like I see it Chris. I don't pulll my punches.
Lots of conspiracy accusations that Jason Line lifted to give Greg Anderson the win in the Camaro's debut. Are you hearing anything?
Anytime teammates square off in a final this stuff comes up. I didn't see it, but I know those guys always have gone at it fair and square in the past.
TB - I think the Danica article in ESPN The Magazine pointed out she is more about "her" brand than racin' vs those who race for the pure joy/sport. Bummed as I was supporting her. Opinion?
Danica realizes that any driver these days needs to market themselves, and she has done a better job of that than anyone else. But she is a skilled racer who truly wants to do the things to succeed. Because if she doesn't, all the marketing in the world won't matter in the long run.
Oriol would disagree with your point of view on TMS for IndyCar. Thoughts?
A lot of drivers disagree, including Dario. But I stand by what I said and what I think is right for the series.
Is Jeff Gordon going to have to sacrifice a chicken in order to break the string of bad luck he has had this year?
Ha. They may already have whacked a couple of them by now.
I agree with your assessment on Pocono. I, for one, am looking forward to road racing at Sonoma! Who is your early pick for that race?
Probably Jimmie, but my darkhorse might be Truex. Kahne will be good there and so will Smoke. But most people will see Ambrose as the man to beat. That guy is the best road racer ina stock car I have ever seen.
To all you Kurt Busch fans, his days in NASCAR are done!!! Talent & being a former champion can not overcome sponsor dollars
I don't think he's done Dave. Talent can overcome a lot of evils. And a few sponsors might like the bad boy image, like Monster Energy, for example.
Do you thing the 2013 cars will bring the have nots Finch, TBR & the start
Not a chance. No matter what the cars are, the teams with the most money are the ones that will win most of the time.
Where do you see Newman next year Terry?
I still believe they will work it out at SHR and find sponsorship for him to stay.
Terry. If you had the ability to bring back any 3 drivers, who have "retired" within the last 5 years and you could put them in a very competitive car, which would give that car a strong chance of winning a race, who might those 3 drivers be?
I would only do this if I could bring back drivers as they were in their prime, not as they are now. I might need more than five years though. How about Dale Jarrett, Rusty Wallace and Terry Labonte (I consider him retired).
Just like SHR told Darien he wouldn't be back before the season was over, do you think they've already told Newman to "he's free to test the waters"?
They told him he's free to test the waters, but that doesn't mean they want him to leave.
Who is your pick to win the Sprint Race in Pocono Sunday?
I'm late, so sorry if you've already answered, but: Can you think of a worse way to end the week for Randy Bernard? And exactly what was he thinking with that tweet?
I agree Scott. I know he was trying to defuse the situation, but that should have been handled behind closed doors. Now with the Detroit mess, IndyCar has lost a lot of the momentum it gained from a great Indy 500.
Thanks for the chat. Have a good time in Texas!
Thanks Terry. It's my home state and I always enjoy getting some quality Tex-Mex food.
Is it worthwhile for me to make the 4 hour drive to see the Michigan race? Or should I save my money and go to Chicagoland instead?
I enjoy the Michigan races. I know some people complain about the cars getting spread out, but the drivers can race everywhere on the track. And I stay in Ann Arbor, a really fun college town.
Gotta run folks. Excellent questions today. Should be interesting to se how the new surface works out in Pocono, and how the new IndyCar races at TMS. All in all, a good weekend for racing. Take care. Peace.
