Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (2:57 PM)

Let's get started. Welcome.

Dexter (Scottsdale)

Farrell, has Tiger ever said why he doesn't wear the black shoes anymore? Man he looks so Tigerish on Sunday, then you look down at those goofy white shoes............

Farrell Evans
  (2:59 PM)

Tiger wanted golf shoes with the same cushioning and feel as his workout shoes. So that's what you're seeing him where now. I'm sure when Nike rolls out his shoe for consumers they will have a black pair available.

Dexter (Scottsdale)

What up Farrell, do you think Ryo Isikawa will ever be a consistant winner on the tour? He's still really young right, and it definetly wouldn't hurt the tour to have a superstar for Asia.

Farrell Evans
  (3:02 PM)

Ryo was a nice novelty item when he first came here because the Asian media that came with him treated him like a Rock star. But the longer he plays in the states, the more he looks just like any other average tour pro.

Tiger Woods (Jupiter)

Do you agree that I'm going to win the U.S Open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:03 PM)

Tiger,I hope you win. It would be great for the game.

Farrell Evans
  (3:05 PM)

Phil is well-known for complaining to the tour. He's on to something but the tour has a long-term multimedia strategy that includes fans being able to access media on the golf course through their handheld devices.

JY (TO)

FE, what are your thoughts on the phil text? what are insiders saying about this issue?

JY (TO)

FE, what is your handicap?

Farrell Evans
  (3:06 PM)

My handicap is about a 5 from 6500 yards and it's about 15 at Bethpage Black.

Pete (Florida)

Just made my first trip to Muirfield and was very impressed. I go to the Players every year but liking Memorial better, the course and tourney have more of a feel like Augusta. If you had to pick one after the majors, which would it be?

Farrell Evans
  (3:07 PM)

The Players is my favorite. I just love being on the Stadium course.

Colin (Philly)

have u ever heard of dennis milne? he played at wake forest in the 60s

Farrell Evans
  (3:08 PM)

No, tell me about Dennis Milne.

Colin (Philly)

which sectional qualifier has the best chance to contend

Farrell Evans
  (3:09 PM)

joe Durant. He had a third place finish in his last start at Colonial.

Colin (Philly)

how will casey martin do in open

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

It doesn't matter how Casey plays. The fact that he is in the field is enough.

Colin (Philly)

who will win the us open

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

I like Tiger but I think Jason Dufner will be there with him at the end.

Colin (Philly)

where will tiger finish in the open

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

I think he will be there Sunday afternoon with a shot to win.

Colin (Philly)

Will rory contend this week?

Farrell Evans
  (3:13 PM)

Rory has been struggling. I don't know that he can find his game this fast. He's been shooting some ugly scores.

Alex (Hilliard, OH)

Farrell, Muirfield Village seems perfectly suited for match play like the Presidents Cup - do you agree and how much of an impact will the redesigned 16th be coming down the stretch of key matches next year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

It's going to be a blast. Memorial is a tough, but fair golf course. Jack could make it as tough as he wants to, but the bones of the golf course are so good that he doesn't have to trick it up.

TO (Chicago)

Where will Phil finish in the Open

Farrell Evans
  (3:16 PM)

Phil is tired and I think the whole Hall of Fame thing was a little bothersome from him. But he always gets up for the majors. So he'll be a contender. Top 20.

Shoshana (Boston)

Phil has a point, but Tiger made the same point at the players, by actually saying something, without WD'ing in a fit of pique and not even saying anything to Jack. Bubba and Rickie managed to do the same

Farrell Evans
  (3:17 PM)

Yeah, I was surprised by Phil's response. He's got the juice to go and talk face to face to the Tour and Jack.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

I wont say Tiger is the favorite going into the US Open (lets just say he is one of them), but he is certainky expected to contend. Give us a few names that you believe will be on the leadeboard on sunday during the back nine???

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

Jason Dufner, Zach Johnson, Luke Donald, Ben Curtis.

Shoshana (Boston)

Ryo is younger than Rory and Bud Cauley and is on the verge of earning his PGA tour card, he's been around so long it's easy to forget how young he is.

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

Ryo is working hard on his game but like I said, he's good but not great.

Dougy (Orlando)

Between 1997 and 2009 Tiger averaged 2.5 wins in his first 9 events. This year he has 2 wins which means he's not far off. I know that the media likes talking about how he had his worst 3 week stretch ever, but the problem with that is that Tiger only cares about wins, so whether its a T40 or a 2nd place finish, it's the same result to Tiger. If all 28 of Tiger's 2nd place finishes were MC's instead, would he still be considered a top 2 golfer of all time in your opinion?I guess what I'm trying to say, is that the media's expectations although they seem harsh (talking about 3 bad weeks in a row) and that his consistency isn't there this year, doesn't mean anything in the real world since all Tiger cares about are wins and his wins are there. That's the difference to me between the media and the greatest ever. The media looks for consistency and considers top 10's as improvement. The greatest ever cares about winning.

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

Tiger spoiled us.

Scratch (Jupiter)

Hey Farrel how was FAMU, spent 4 years in tallahassee myself, great place.

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

Tallahassee is the best college town in America.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Farrell, your thoughts on Phil removing himself over fans snapping pics using cellphones? I would imagine this is common practice during tiger's rounds yet i dont recall tiger ever w/d due to such a reason.

Farrell Evans
  (3:22 PM)

Hunter Mahan told me at the Players that cell phones and talking have probably cost Tiger a few tournaments.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

NHey Farrell, what are the odds Tiger wins another event this year? It seems like Tiger's game has not quite peaked as of yet and he still has won twice. For all the talk about the old Tiger vs. New Tiger i think that if Tiger does peak again...WATCH-OUT PGA tour!!!!! Your thoughts....

Farrell Evans
  (3:23 PM)

Steven,I think Tiger, based on what we've seen, can easily win another three times if he plays enough. He might not get a major but he'll probably get his 5 or 6 wins.

Tom [via mobile]

With the cell phone thing as his latest complaint, the lines begin to blur as to what Phil protests to benefit the tour and what Phil protests to benefit Phil, you think?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

Tom,Phil is smart enough to know that the cell phones are a part of the tour's multimedia strategy and not so a grandma can call her sick husband during the round. But I think he was upset about how he was playing and in that moment he wasn't thinking about the health of the tour and cell phones.

scratch (jupiter fla)

Keegan Bradleys run done or he have a shot in the Open.

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

Keegan is in a rough patch but don't lose faith in him. He's a baby in this game.

Rafael Arango (Colombia)

Is Camilo Villegas the golfer with the most talent on Tour that is way down in the OWGR and in the FEDEX CUP race? I can only compare his case with Anthony Kim. Your thoughts?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Camilo and AK are nice players that are struggling. We remember them because they had a lot of flash in their games.

Shoshana (Boston)

Who do you like at Wegmans this year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Stacey Lewis.

Andrew (WI)

See, Tiger may win at the same rate now as he did earlier...but in the past, he turned all of his non-contending tournaments into backdoor top-10s. Now, he turns those into T-40s and the occasional MC.

Matt(Springfield ) [via mobile]

What do you think would be the best matchup for an epic Monday finish at the us open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Tiger Woods v. Luke Donald

Shoshana (Boston)

If you had to choose one thing, what are area of the game is most crucial at olympic? off tee, iron, wedge/chipping/scrambling, putting?

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Scrambling. No one is going to hit every fairway. But the guy who leads the field in fairways hit is going to be there on Sunday.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Farrell, so you dont think tiger wins another Major? Seriously? So....assuming you are correct and he wins enough to break Snead's record but not Jack's...who is the best all time? Jack or Tiger and why?

Farrell Evans
  (3:31 PM)

He will win another major in his career, but he might not win one this year. Snead's record is toast probably as early as next year.

Dougy (Orlando)

That's just my point by you saying "spoiled us". He still is spoiling us. If he had this same start to his year at any point between 2001-2009, no one would be saying Tiger isn't the same Tiger. It's a mixture of jealousy (from the Johnny Millers, Nick Faldo's, and Chamblee's of the media) and looking for a story to write (from everyone else in the media). He had 2 bad years which were undoubtedly due to injury, swing change, and lack of focus. All those things are fixable and are clearly being very close to fixed.

Farrell Evans
  (3:33 PM)

Doug,It's no doubt that Tiger is the greatest ever and there is some jealousy and contempt toward him because he isn't the nicest guy in the world. But we have to as journalists talk about his shortcomings as a player.

D. Hall (Tigernation)

Hey FAMU, I went to Tennessee State University and I happened to be on the tennis team the same time that Foley (yes, Sean Foley) was on the golf team... Can you comment on the vidication that this HBCU grad should recieve for his work with Tiger. Seems like he was right...

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

D. Hall,Tiger's swing is a work-in-progress and SEan doesn't purport to be some kind of magic worker. He simply helps a player learn how to get better.

scratch (jupiter fla)

The big "E" lives here in jupiter and is a local favorite. Does Ernie have any kind of shot in the Open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:35 PM)

The Big E has a lot of scar tissue from some missed opportunities this year on Sunday. He's silky smooth from tee to green but I wonder if can make the putts down the stretch.

PICK (A SIDE)

Farrell, following your golf coverage of Tiger is like riding a roller-coaster (up and down and nauseating). One day he is never going to win again and the next he is gonna pass Sam Snead in 18 months?

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

Pick,Tiger is a human being. My analysis of him is proportional to what I see him doing in his game. But if you look at my record, I have always been cautious in my critic of him.

Tom [via mobile]

So if I have this straight, if the media criticizes Tiger it's because they're je

Farrell Evans
  (3:38 PM)

No, I don't think anybody is saying that. The media looks at his game against his record as the best ever. But there is probably some resentment in our ranks toward him.

Matt [via mobile]

Who would win in an 18 hOle playoff between tiger and Luke?

Farrell Evans
  (3:38 PM)

Tiger.

Shoshana (Boston)

I think analyzing Tiger's game and shortcomings is important for the media to do, but golf doesn't really lend itself to the swing by swing, round by round, tournament by tournament analysis that media tends to do with Tiger. Following media coverage of Tiger requires a HANS device to protect from whiplash. I think all some readers are saying, is that it would be nice if when doing the analysis media sometimes used a longer time frame. Dude has now won 3x in last 7 months

Farrell Evans
  (3:41 PM)

You're right but we work in a NOW time frame. Sure, Tiger has done alright under a normal time frame, but we aren't talking about the typical tour player. When Ted Williams went 0 for 4 in a game it was a bigger deal than say when Mickey Mantle did it.

Tom [via mobile]

Do you like the 18 hole playoff? I was at Torrey on Sunday in 2008 and I felt all it did was prevent me from seeing the end like I'd paid for.

Farrell Evans
  (3:41 PM)

I love the 18 hole playoff. The USGA should never get rid of it.

Matt [via mobile]

Would tiger prevail against a surging mcilroy?

Farrell Evans
  (3:42 PM)

Tiger would beat Rory but it would be close.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Farrell, will you and/or Michael Collins be doing the chat all four days of the US Open? You guys did great during the Masters. Thanks bro.

Farrell Evans
  (3:42 PM)

Collins will be doing about 95 percent of it with me dropping in for a couple of hours on thursday and friday.

scratch (jupiter)

When tiger stepped off the 18th at the Memorial, Jack said somethiing that made him flash a big smile. Did anyone figure out what Jack said to him?

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

Jack told him that he thought the shot at 16 was the greatest shot that he's ever seen on that hole.

Nemes (P-Town)

If Luke Donald, Lee Westwood, and the the like don't win a major in their careers, are they HOFers?

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

Nope.

Snarfle (Mcgee)

FE, where do you rank tigers chip in at memorial amongst his greatest shots of all time?

Farrell Evans
  (3:44 PM)

It's behind the shot from the bunker at the Canadian Open and the chip at the Masters. I would put it third maybe.

Nemes (P-Town)

Why does Freddie keep the President's Cup job? Do they not have others in waiting?

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Nemes,It's not fair to all the other guys that he got the gig so soon after being the Ryder Cup captain. Everybody knows that it's a popularity contest to land the job. Plenty of guys deserve it just as much as Freddie.

Nemes (P-Town)

Would Yani make the cut at Olympic?

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Nope.

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Nope.

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Nope.

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Nope

scratch (jupiter)

Have you ever met Jack? He is a hell of a nice guy.

Farrell Evans
  (3:47 PM)

I have met Jack. He screamed at me many years ago at the Masters for requesting time after his pre-tournament interview. I can't imagine Arnie ever been that tough on a reporter for wanting to ask a few friendly questions.

Rob (Oakland)

Have you heard any players talk about changing their ball, to work it around Olympic's doglegs?

Farrell Evans
  (3:48 PM)

No way. They talk about hitting 3-woods and hybrids that are easier to shape.

Cody (Nebraska) [via mobile]

For the past few years in general we have missed those spectacular Tiger Sunday comeback charges, it's comforting to know he still possesses that capability.

Showtime (Chicago)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Freddie has never been the Ryder Cup captain.....2010 was Corey Pavin.....

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

You are correct.

Shoshana (Boston)

Freddie has never been RC captain, so huh? Also who hasn't been Pres Cup captain who is currently waiting on it (and still young enough)? To me it would seem to make sense for Freddie to get a RC captaincy given his success, and the US lack of it

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

Right. That was a typo. I meant to say so soon after having it in 2011.

Nancy (Albany Oregon)

Any guess on a longshot winner?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

Ernie Els would be a long shot with his putter to win his third U.S. Open. I don't see a Cinderalla story., especially if the course isn't tricked up.

Rob (Oakland)

Think more players carry 1,2 & 3 irons this week?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

No one is going to carry a 1-iron. You might see a few 2-irons and 3-irons. Bill Haas carries a 2-iron but most guys will have hybrids in their bags.

Nemes (P-Town)

Who is the greatest Senior PGA player ever?

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

Hale Irwin then Lee Trevino.

Snarfle (Mcgee)

What is your take on the nickname FIGJAM? is Phil really deserving of such a nickname, in your opinion?

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

No. It's mean.

Cody (Nebraska) [via mobile]

Where has lee Westwood been?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

Lee is sorting his game out. His caddie is out with an injury. But I don't think it will have impact on him at Olympic.

Showtime (Chicago)

What's the winning score next week? Think it's under par? Any potential weather impacts in NoCal this time of year?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

6-under par. Lee Janzen won on a tricked up Olympic at even par in '98.

Ankeet ( Saginaw MI) [via mobile]

FE, do you still think tiger can beat the field at their very best and with his B Game?

Farrell Evans
  (3:54 PM)

Good question. He has to play with his A game to win now, I think. But he won at both Bay Hill and Memorial on a B plus game.

Nick (Washington DC)

Farrell, Which major are you suprised Tiger has won the most? I am going to say the British Open.

Farrell Evans
  (3:54 PM)

U.S. Open.

Rob (Oakland)

Does Olympic set up to possibly allow a 40+ winner?

Farrell Evans
  (3:55 PM)

David Toms or Stricker are 40-plus guys who can win at Olympic. And of course Phil, the best of the 40 and over gang. Don't forget Ernie.

Gabe (Ford)

How do you think Stricks fairs at Olympic Club

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

Stricks has been quiet of late. He missed the cut at the Players. If he's hot with the putter, he could run away with the tournament.

Rob (Oakland)

Higher finish for McDowell or Harrington?

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

McDowell but Paddy has been playing better of late.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

OFarrell, in the battle over who is better...usa or europe, right now...who has the edge and come ryder cup time (cant wait!)...who will have the better team? Great chat...

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

Steven,It's going to be evenly matched. Both teams will have some rookies. But the veterans on each side have to be the emotional leaders.

Shoshana (Boston)

Rory is playing Memphis, which is in the states but hot and ends on Sunday, Lee is playing in Sweden which is much further away, cold and ends on Saturday. If you were going to play week before a major, which would you choose?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Memphis. Don't get Lee's decision. I wrote about this a few weeks ago. I don't know if you saw what Tony Jacklin said to me. It doesn't make sense.

Snarfle (Mcgee)

do you remember when Tiger Churned Rory Sabbattini into a pile of yesterdays leftover meatloaf for a second time? Why is Sabbattini so cocky, he hasn't done anything spectacular besides go on emotional tirades to innocent bystanders

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Rory is his own man. I respect that.

Rob (Oakland)

Going to catch a Giants game while you're in SF?

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Only if they are playing the Braves.

Andrew (WI)

At the US Open, one of Tiger/Rory/Phil, or the field? If the field, how many golfers do I need to give before you go against the field?

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

hard to say. 20.

steven in orlando [via mobile]

Farrell, got to get an answer my brother...you say he tops snead but not Jack...whos the greatest in that case...Jack or Tiger and why?

Farrell Evans
  (4:02 PM)

Tiger. it's harder to win the 100 tournaments that Tiger might win than it is 18 majors. But you have to think that if Tiger wins another 20 events, five of them will be majors.

Farrell Evans
  (4:03 PM)

I gotta go. My time is up. I look forward to next week, live from the U.S. OPen at Olympic. Stay tuned for the time of my chat that week. I will have lots of tidbits about the course and the mood at Olympic. Save your questions and feel free to reach out to me at evans.espn@gmail.com Peace until we meet again.
