Thank you all for coming to the relocated chat for the week. I see there are a lot of questions, so let's get cracking.
Any word on the Steelers making an offer to Wallace? Is there a chance this goes unresolved into the 2012 season?
It's been very quiet on that front. I don't expect Wallace to show up for the mandatory camp next week. He should be there for the start of training camp, though.
What AFC North Team do you think has the Best Shot of Playing in Super Bowl XLVII?
If the Steelers have a healthy Roethlisberger and defense, it's hard to bet against the Steelers.
Hey Jamison. Do you see the Ravens looking to sign another rb (such as Cedric Benson) or is the backup job Bernard Pierce's to lose?
I don't see the Ravens signing another running back unless there is an injury. It's Pierce's job to lose. Also, I hear that the Ravens just signed former Bengals guard Bobbie Williams to a two-year deal. So, I'm going to have to cut the chat short today to write on that.
I know that you've been in Cleveland for camp, but from what you can tell, who is really shining in the Bengals' camp at WR? Give me one or two names that you'd put "leading" for that coveted position as running mate for AJ Green. Who is the odd man out at WR? Thanks!!
I'm going to be at Bengals camp on Tuesday, so I should get a better feel for that. I think it will come down to either Brandon Tate or two rookies: Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones.
Who impressed you most at the Browns minicamp?
Safety Eric Hagg and quarterback Brandon Weeden.
Who was least impressive at the Browns minicamp?
WR Mohamed Massaquoi.
Is Holmgren really a quarterback "guru" or did he just get lucky in being a coach of two great quarterbacks in Favre and Hasselback? Not much progress has been seen in McCoy in Cleveland so it makes me question his ability to "guru" Weeden.
The real test will be Weeden. Holmgren pressed the Browns to take him in the first round and not wait until the second.
Do you think with the pick of Ta'amu and Mclendon's bulking up to 325 pounds can spell the end for Hampton even before camp starts. They could get someone off waivers or the FA market at a lesser price and let Hampton go?
They're going to give Hampton every opportunity to keep his starting job. But this has to be his final year.
JH: I've found your musings both informative and irritating. Often in equal measure, but I'm happy that you're our blogger. Anyway. Many things (few of them good) have been said about the Browns' receivers. Did you get a chance to see the TE's in action? If so, what are your observations?
Sorry I don't have many musings about the tight end spot. Nobody really stood out to me. I do remember a Colt McCoy pass bouncing off the knee of Ben Watson. I see Evan Moore having a bigger role this year. Well, let me re-phrase that: Moore should have a bigger role.
Hey Jamison;Have we heard the last from Ed Reed regarding his annual "disrespect" from the Ravens organization? And do you think he really deserves to be paid more, as he states? Thanks.
If Reed keeps up his tradition, he spouts off around May or June every year. And, every year, he shows up to training camp. Until he changes this pattern, I expect him to report on time.
I've seen a lot of articles that assume that Ray Rice will sign his franchise tender if a deal is not reached by 7/16. I know Ray is a standup guy who truly wants to play, but isn't there still a chance he could hold out longer if he wanted to or if his agent advised him to?
The deadline to get a new deal is July 16. Rice doesn't have to sign his tag until he wants to come back and play. Some, like Vincent Jackson and Logan Mankins, didn't sign their tag until the middle of the regular season. I don't see that with Rice. I don't expect him for mandatory minicamp and a good portion of training camp. But I would be surprised if he missed any games.
Hey Jamison, thanks for your work, you're doing great. My question: How will the cap-space for the steelers in 2013 look like?Thank you
Not to avoid the question, but it depends on what the cap will be in 2013. Many predict it will be a flat cap, which means not a big increase. That will severely limit the Steelers, who might need that space to put the tag on Wallace and a first-round tender on Antonio Brown.
All right JH, I have a critically acclaimed 2-part question for you. ;)1) How do you currently see the Steelers RB depth chart shaking out? Personally, I see Redman starting, Dwyer backing up, Batch and Rainey off the bench, David Johnson as FB, Clay on the practice squad, and Mewelde Moore gone.2) Please give me an early prediction for each team for an unfamiliar name who could be a key contributor this year: someone who has been buried on a team's depth chart who has improved, an undrafted FA, or someone similar. Thanks in advance, keep on keeping on.
I'll answer the first part and move on. There are too many questions today. As far as the Steelers depth chart at RB, I would expect it to be: Redman, Dwyer and Rainey. I see Batch or Clay going on practice squad. I think Clay gets the nod on the 53, if the Steelers carry four backs.
With all the talk lately of Moch being able to rush the passer, do you think he sees the field (after he gets back from possible suspension)? Michael Johnson received alot of the same hype/talk a few years ago and hasn't lived up to it. (6 sacks in 3 years)
This is a big year for both players. Johnson has to step up this year. There's no Frostee Rucker to replace him if he struggles. The Bengals could go with Derrick Harvey, though. As far as Moch, he should see the field this year, especially on some passing downs as a rusher and on special teams. With his ability, Moch should have an impact on special teams.
There seems to be a lot of hype surrounding Weeden and Richardson in Cleveland, but we have seen this many times before in the past 13 years. If these two projected stars do not pan out, what type of future do you see for Heckert and Holmgren?
I still see this regime having at least two more years before the seat really becomes hot. If the Browns don't have a winning record by next season, changes will be in order.
does carlton mitchell still play for the browns? if so how did he look at minicamp? also do u think josh cooper will make the team and be weeds go to guy much like momass and little was for noodle arm mccoy last year?
I keep hearing Carlton Mitchell's name all the time. But the only time I noticed him during my two days at camp was him dropping a pass. Not sure he even makes the team this year.
Jamison there has been a lot of talk about the lack of participation in the Ravens OTA's thus far. While many teams in the league and in the division have had almost 100% attendance the Ravens have had as many as 20 players absent. This has to be eating at Harbaugh a bit. What have you been hearing?
Harbaugh can't say much because these workouts are voluntary. But every team in the division is not having the same problem as the Ravens. This isn't unusual. Ray Lewis and Ed Reed are never there at this time of the year. A lot of veterans like Willis McGahee, Trevor Pryce and Chris McAlister were regular no-shows during their time in Baltimore. It's a situation where you want them to be here because it is beneficial. But it's also not the end of the world that there are some guys missing.
What are the chances Chad Ochocinco comes back to Cincinnati and if does do you think he could contribute more here than New England?
Chances of return: 8.7 percent, give or take one-tenth of a percent.
Hello there Mr. Hensley. Two Bengals questions: 1. Is there an AFC team with a better D Line rotation than the bengals when healthy? 2. Ochocinco getting released has to be another 1up to the Bengals for getting some sort of value out of him, right?
I really like the depth of the Bengals' D-Line, although I think there was better depth last season there. Fanene, who was all-effort, is a big loss. As far as Ocho, the Bengals have been winning most of their trades recently from him to Carson Palmer to Keith Rivers. It's been quite a run.
Hey Jamison, is there a wide receiver in free agency you see the browns going after once minicam wraps up? I read your post yesterday about how the browns receivers were dropping too many passes. If they dont go after a receiver which three resceivers do you see starting for them?
I don't see the Browns going after any veteran. As far as the depth chart, the top four WRs will be Little, Massaquoi, Cribbs and Benjamin. Little and Massaquoi should get the start.
do you see todd haley going more to the ground game rooney seems to covet?
This will change on a game-to-game basis. But I still feel this will be a pass-heavy offense based on the talent. The top playmakers are Wallace and Brown, not Redman.
Hey JH, Which WR has a better chance to end up in Cincy this season, Braylon Edwards or Chad Ochocinco?
Do you think that Roethlisberger and Haley will have a good relationship?
Winning makes everyone buddies.
Who is your Best bet to backup Richardson?
Hardesty. But, like every year with him, he has to stay healthy.
Is there any truth to the rumor going around town that the Browns could be for sale? And is there any chance of them leaving Cleveland again?
I think Lerner could eventually sell the team but right now. To answer the second part, Browns aren't leaving Cleveland.
Hey JH, I haven't seen anything else regarding the Goal Line Stand idea? Are you shelving it? Or perhaps after reading the comment threads here you've abandoned all hope of a thoughtful conversation between two readers.
I plan to try it next week. I was a tad busy with traveling to Cleveland and covering minicamp.
Hey JamisonGreetings from Switzerland, i'm reading every post of yours and think you're doing great. At the beginning of the August i'm going to Pittsburgh and want to see the players in Training camp. Some tips whend i can get some autographes? Thank you very much for the help. Greetings from Europe
Unfortunately Christoph, I haven't been to Steelers training camp. I covered the Ravens for the previous 11 years and started at ESPN at the start of the regular season. I will try to get more information when the time gets closer. You should stop and say hello if I'm there at the same time.
Biggest offseason challenge for the Steelers: learning a new offensive system, getting 2 rookie OL ready for the NFL, replacing several starters on defense, or something else that I've missed?
Getting Adams ready to be a starting left tackle as a rookie and finding the other starting corner to start opposite Ike Taylor.
Based on your observations at minicamp this week, what are the chances the Browns make the playoffs this year? I know the Browns have a lot of work ahead of them but look at the Bengals last year. Everyone was predicting a 4-5 win season and they shocked everyone. I give them a 35% chance.
The Browns weren't as bad as their record indicated last season. Well, maybe the offense was that bad. Anyway, my take is the Browns will be improved from last year but their record might not reflect that. This is a tougher schedule in 2012.
Greg Little may be a physical specimen, but could he "drop" his way out of a starting job?
Maybe on a team that has good depth at WR. Little would have to fall on his face not to start for the Browns.
Do you think Dre Kirkpatrick will be a bust? I watched him in college and I don't see "1st round talent", I think he will be a middle of the road CB at best. Your thoughts?
I'm not an expert on Kirkpatrick. All I know is the Bengals have drafted two cornerbacks in the first round recently (Leon Hall and Johnathan Joseph) and both have lived up to expectations. So, their track record says Kirkpatrick will be pretty good.
If MoMass doesnt produce this year in Cleveland do you think he will be playing for the Browns the following year?
I would bet against it. This has the makings of a make-or-break season for him.
Do you think that the Browns can finish 0-16?
I would bet against that as well. It will be tough for a winning record. But I don't see them bottoming out like that.
Is there any chance Antonio Brown's performance this year effects the Steelers desire to sign Wallace long term? Is that something they are keeping in mind at this point?
The Steelers will do everything in their power to keep both. I'm not sure if that is realistic. But Pittsburgh tends to keep the players that it wants because it uses its cap on its own players.
can you unblock me from twitter, i was just mad about all the suggs articles when I made a bad tweet. sorry man, doing a good job on the blog. @littlekelv
As long as you stay on your best behavior.
Does the revamped Steelers O-Line and new OC give the Steelers enough help to be a top 10 Offense?
This should have been a top-10 offense for the past three seasons. So, I say yes this year as well.
On a scale of 1-10, how terrified should I be, as a fan of the team, of what the Brown's are calling a WR core?
Terrified meter on WR group only (with 1 being doomed): 3.
Ziggy Hood or Cam Heyward start week 1?
Ziggy. I would say Ziggy even if I thought Heyward. Ziggy put on 20 pounds of muscle this offseason. I'm not that stupid to get on his bad side.
Do you think the Steelers offensive line will start 2 rookies and if so will they play well their first year
As long as Adams progresses, there will be two rookies starting.
Which CB ends up starting opposite Haden: Sheldon Brown, Dimitri Patterson or Buster Skrine?
I like Haden and Patterson starting with Skrine as the nickel.
More yards this year - AJ Green or Mike Wallace?
Green. He should take his game to the next level this year.
Tough loss for your Terps to in state Loyola in the championship game. Of all years for the Final Four to be in Baltimore this was it. M&T would have been packed and rocking. Gillette was empty and at times resembled a museum.
Couldn't agree more. But I'm glad for the Loyola coach. I covered him when he coached a high school team in Baltimore. Sorry for the lax talk, guys. Couldn't resist.
Jamison, if Brandon Weeden doesn't pan out as expected this season, and the Browns have an opportunity to draft Matt Barkley do they take it?
Not if Holmgren and Shurmur are still here. You have to give Weeden at least two years.
Fact or Fiction: Cincinnati benefited from a soft schedule last year and will be hard pressed to repeat that success
Thanks for coming here on a Friday to chat. I really enjoyed it. We'll probably have the chat on Friday next week as well. I'm going to do three camps in three days next week with the Bengals, Steelers and Ravens. Have a good weekend everyone.
