Keep firing in those questions. We'll get rolling in a sec.
Jake, Bob Stoops said incoming transfers Jalen Saunders and Cortez Johnson have applied for waivers to play this season; Under what grounds might they have applied and how likely to be approved are these type of waiver applications? Thanks!
Stoops didn't reveal on what grounds Saunders and Johnson are seeking waivers. They both endured coaching changes at their previous schools, but that's usually not enough to warrant a waiver. Each waiver request is reviewed individually, but the majority of waivers are granted because of an illness to a family member or a financial hardship. So getting a waiver is not easy. I'm not optimistic.
Lets say both Saunders and Cortez qualify to play this year, whats your take on the kind of impact they could have?
I'm not sure Cortez would play much of a role, but Saunders definitely would. Saunders has elite speed, and would give Landry the downfield threat he lacked at times last season.
Did the Sooner Nation writers ever resolve the winner of the Sonic, Braums and Johnnies debate?
Yes. I won. Braum's and Johnnie's > Sonic.
With OU favored to win the Big 12 again, can, and will the Sooners handle the pressure and take care of business?
It will come down to those last three games, WV, OSU, TCU. If the Sooners win all three, they'll likely be conference champs. We'll see.
This question is about ten years old but still intrigues me. Just what caused the collapse of the 03 team? They were blowing out everyone and had all time great offense AND defense and then just collapsed in the conference and national championship games. What happened? I blame the NC loss to lsu mostly on the injury to Jason White with his thumb ribs and knees so bad he couldn't even get under center but is that all? Did mike leaving have to do with it? Did they just get worn out or what?
I wasn't covering the team then, but former players tell me Mike leaving really hurt the defense in that Big 12 title game. Obviously White not being 100 percent hurt, too. I've heard several former players say that the 03 team was better than the 04 team. Both teams, for whatever reason, played like the season ended in November.
Do the Thunder get it done in 6 or 7? Or do you think Lebron and D-Wade are too much for the young OKC team?
I think the home court configuration, 2-3-2, helps the Thunder. It's hard to beat anybody three times in a row, especially a team as resilient as the Thunder. I'm going with OKC in 7.
Sooners with runners at first and second, two outs.
Prediction for NBA Finals? I'm going Thunder in 6.
That's optimistic. I think it will take 7.
We need linebackers, how many do you see us signing this year?
I would say at least 2 or 3.
Have you heard anything new pertaining to Justin Manning?
Jacob - are all new recruits present and accounted for in Norman?
As far as the freshmen, I believe everyone is enrolled except for Tapper.
Will OU pursue Darrell Daniel out of Oakley, CA now that USC is likely done with commitment the WR Mtichell over the weekend? Or does the recent commitment of Armwood wrap up efforts for the Sooners at receiver in 2013 as well?
Smallwood? No, I think the Sooners add at least another WR. Not sure about Daniel, but we'll be on top of it if anything materializes.
Did Kittle blow it by not offering the TE Morgan sooner?
Depends on whether Kittle is able to land somebody else like Hunter Henry or Danny Mattingly.
Sooners leave the bases loaded. Going to the seventh.
Do you think the Sooners have a legitimate chance at landing Joe Mathis? Or is he just enjoying the process, and eventually join his cousin at USC?
They seem to be the ones to beat.
Who is your dark horse to win the conference and why?
How about Texas? If they ever get any QB play, they'll be tough. That's a big if. But the rest of the team, especially the defense, is solid.
You mind listing your way-to-early top 10 for next season?
1. USC, 2. LSU, 3. Alabama, 4. Oregon, 5. OU. There's a dropoff after that.
Am i the only one that thinks Whaley is capable a 1,500+ yard season? I know he's got the ankle injury and all that but i just really feel like everybody is overlooking him. Perhaps even a darkhorse heisman candidate? your thoughts?
Given how Cale Gundy rotates the backs, I don't think he gets the carries for that kind of season. But you are right that people are overlooking Whaley. When healthy, he's a potential superstar.
What I was thinking before pressing send of my twitter account?
Ask Jaz Reynolds.
I think OU is seriously being overhyped this year. They did lose some starters.. I don't think they can win the Big 12, much less a NCG. Who do you think will win the Big 12 this year?
Clearly Oklahoma State, right?
Having two great RB recruits in the next class in Ford and Bryant, what percentage chance would you give that one ends up at another school?
Chris Brown and DeMarco Murray coexisted just fine.
Is this a jinx scheduling an OU chat during an OU game?
Based on the first inning, perhaps.
Btw, South Carolina with a leadoff double.
Do you think McFarland can step up in his final year similiar to the way Alexander did last year and become a dominant force on the D-line? R.J. Washington too?
Similar to the way Alexander did? No. Neither player is going to be the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. But either, particularly Washington, could have a relative breakout season. The talent is there.
You make anything of that stud receiver de-committing from UT? Does he have any interest playing for a team that passes alot?
Or maybe he doesn't have interest playing for a team that can't throw.
Holy smokes. Mistich throws the ball into left field on the sac bunt. SC 1, OU 0.
Thunder in 5. Thunder's big 3 > Heat's big 3. Thunder's bench >>> Heat's bench. The Heat won't get it done 2 years in a row.
Would anyone be stunned if the Thunder won in 5? I'm not picking that, but after OKC came back being down 2-0 to the Spurs, nothing about the Thunder would surprise me.
Any thoughts on Phil Steele having OU at #2 for his projected post season finish poll? http://www.philsteele.com/
Did he watch this team play in November? Seems overly optimistic (third time I've used that word in this chat).
With Reynolds, franks and I forgot the other did they do anything since the suspenison or were they going to have their schloarships revoked anyways
Their scholarships were revoked for the initial offense.
With a great QB and two awesome RB recruits will this help get some great O-Line prospects that we are needing?
I think so. Patton has done a solid job recruiting in recent years, notably with last year's interior haul. It's on Kittle now to land a couple of tackles.
Lane Kiffin is 25-13 as a college coach (5-15 in NFL, but that's beside the point). Overrated coach, overrated team. Even with a weak schedule, I don't think they make it to the NC. What's with the USC hype and why does this guy keep getting HC jobs?
They'll have the best QB in the country in Matt Barkley, and a ton of firepower offensively. If they beat Oregon, they'll be in the mix.
Passed ball. 2-0 Gamecocks.
With Ricky seals-jones decomitting from Texas does this mean they're out of it and what are OU's chances? Are you buying the preseason hype for Texas?
I haven't heard connected to OU, but that could always change. Am I buying the hype of Texas as a national title contender? Uh, no.
2-0 is going to be tough to come back from the way the Sooners have been swinging the bats. Would not be a good showing if OU came away from Columbia without scoring a run.
With the way Baylor played last year and the way they are recruiting already this year do you see them taking over the state of Texas
"They'll have the best QB in the country in Matt Barkley" - HOW DARE YOU SIR! I've been doing some cool broom work, IF you haven't noticed...Good day, sir!
I don't even know what that means, but it made me laugh.
I know it was reported the visit went well, but is there any reason to worry Jordan Mastrogiovanni did not commit right away?
No, I don't think so. Not every player, especially the top guys, is going to commit on the spot.
DB more likely to commit to OU, Cole Luke or Rashad Robinson?
Which highly regarded lineman will the light finally turn on for, resulting in a huge season for OU, Jamarkus McFarland or RJ Washington?
I lean toward Washington. We kinda know what McFarland is about. He's played the last three seasons. RJ is little more of an unknown because he hasn't had as much playing time. Plus the lightbulb really came on for him last year. He could make another jump this season.
Do you think both running backs Ford and Bryant stay commited to OU, I heard Bryant visited Auburn?
I don't see either decommitting.
Are the Sooners waisting a visit on Laremy Tunsil? By all accounts, he is a heavy Bama lean, with Georgia in second. I know anything can happen during a visit, but do you really think this kid ends up in Norman?
If you have a chance to host the No. 1 OT in the country, you go for it, regardless of where he's leaning.
Sooners with two on, nobody out in the seventh. Can they finally get a clutch hit?
Has Tim Kish landed any OU commits since he joined the staff? If so, which ones?
That would be a negative.
This is a follow up from last weeek you said texas normally has their class by now after the last two seasons why would Mack go after the top guys and the rest evaluate into the summer and into their senior season versus having the class locked by the end of junior day or before summer is here? Also how is OU's class looking and what player(s) standout right now?
By locking up your class early, you ensure you get the guys you want. The problem is, you lock up guys before they are even seniors. Sometimes those prospects stall in their development, and sometimes others you didn't rate as high come on strong. It's a catch 22.
Coaches usually start recruiting kids early in high school, do you think Mike and Tim coming to Norman has hurt any recruiting they might have done while in Arizona.
Not sure I understand the question. But Mike and Tim had sterling recruiting reputations in Arizona.
Wow, OU misses on the hit and run, and Jack Mayfield gets thrown out at third.
Could come back to bite OU in this one.
Guys, that's all the time we have for the chat this week. Thanks for all the questions. We'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Have fun watching the rest of this game, and the game tomorrow night. Until Monday, have a great week.
