Our Turn 4 answers today on Pocono, Joey, whether Michigan should have two races and the 2013 Cup car: http://tinyurl.com/85hy79v
Terry, since 44 cars show up for the 43 starting spots what's the point in having top 35 and champs provisional rules?
No point and I wish they would do away it. Just show and take your chances whether you are Dale Jr. or Scott Speed.
Do you think nascar was trying to play into favor mark martin winning by extending the caution way more laps than needed thus not making it a fuel miliage race?
No, but I do think it's was way too many caution laps for picking up debris that you couldn't even see.
The 2nd to last caution seemed like it took WAY too long. A single car hits the wall and we spend that long under caution? Do you think NASCAR was making an effort to keep it from being a fuel-mileage race at the end?
I don't know, but I think it would have been high drama seeing who ran dry and who didn't.
Would Tony really drop Ryan for Danica if Ryan can't find sponsorship?
Danica is in no matter what because she has sponsorship with Go Daddy.
is kubu officially gone from finch yet, and will he ever get a ride competitive again?
Finch just announced that Kurt is staying, but I'm guessing he's on a very short leash.
What's up with Pablo's middle of the pack finishes? Is it the driver or the equipment.........I hope it's not the driver.
EGR is not up to par these days. That's been true now for the last two seasons.
Do you think Matt Kenseth will be back with roush next season
Hi Terry, wouldn't it make sense for JGR to change sponsors between Joey and Kyle, Joey attracts a younger fan and Kyle can have the Hepot Depot upfront competing for wins against the Lowe's car.
That would be up to the sponsors, but Home Depot still hasn't agreed to a new deal yet.
Hey Terry, Do you think Clint will keep climbing up the leaderboard and make the chase without a win?
I have my doubts about that. I think it probably will take a win or two for those guys lingering around the bottom of the top 10.
JTG to Dodge? If Dodge played ball, could give them opportunity to become two team operation?
Not out of the question, but it would take a major investment from Dodge for engines and sponsorship of a second car.
If the voting were held today, and you could only pick one for the Hall of Fame, which would you pick - NASCAR Champion Bobby Labonte, or 40 time winner Mark Martin?
Mark Mrtin, and this is coming from the man who listed Mark in my book as the most overrated driver. But that was because I thinkg he's too nice a guy and not aggressive enough at times. But I think Mark's longevity as a competitive driver speaks for itself, and his sportsmanship is unsurpassed. In fact, I think NASCAR should name a sportsmanship award in his honor when he retires.
What are the chances of Home Depot going back to Tony?
Haven't heard anything about that, but anything is possible when it come to sponsoship moves. Everything is fair when it comes to love, war and NASCAR sponsorship.
Will NASCAR allow teams to use the older body styles like they did back in the 1990s next year, or will it be the new bodies or bust?
No, it's stil the same COT chassis, but the noses and tails will be much more like production model cars with real grills and similar shapes. A lot like it is now in the Nationwide Series.
pocono was a ton better than i expected will the racing continue to get better there as the pavement ages or will it suffer when the speeds slow down?
Typically, slower speeds make for better racing becaus it brings the field closer together. I think the track will continue to get better, and it was pretty darn good Sunday. The biggest improvement was going to 400 miles instead of 500.
Hey Terry, Would Nascar ever punish drivers for cursing on the radio? Kind of the same thing as on TV because you have a lot of kids listening to the radio traffic at races. I don't think I would let my kids listen especially channel "51".
If you get a scanner, you should be prepared to hear cursing and screaming. Anyone who doesn't like that should use one.
what the possibility of target moving to the 6 car next year with ricky stenhouse as the driver
None. Target has a long-tern relationship with Gannassi in IndyCar and NASCAR.
Outside of Iowa, which Newton mentioned in the column, what other tracks would you like to see added to the schedule, Terry?
No current tracks (other than Iowa) but I would like to see new tracks of similar size and shape built in Seattle, Denver and New York City.
Is this the toughest time ever to find an open seat on a top Cup team? If Lagano stays at JGR, what's the best ride potentially available?
There still could be a ride available at JGR if they have sponsorship for a fourth car. The same is true at RCR, but it won't be long before the Dillon boys are in those rides. Those two young men are the real deal, extremely talented young racers.
When do you expect Stewart Haas Racing to announced Danica 10th Part time Sprint Cup Schedule for this year?
I assumed that would be the Brickyard and I'm surprised they haven't said so yet.
Since 2009, Joey now has 2X the wins as Burton, Earnhardt and Truex. How demoralizing is that for the winless 3?
Not demoralizing, especially since Junior and Truex rank ahead of Joey in the standings.
Do you think Michael Waltrip will do another David Reutimann and release Clint Bowyer from the 15 and put Kurt Busch or Ryan Newman in the 15?
What did you think of the IndyCar race in Texas? Seemed the new car made a difference.
I thought it was a great race. It was different from the usual pack racing, but still lots of passing and the lack of downforce made the drivers earn it and work hard on every lap. But the drivers liked it since it spread out the field a little. It will be a gigantic mistake for IndyCar if they don't return to TMS.
I don't agree that you don't think it took to long to clean up debris. This was a 2.5 mile track, not a .5. It should not take 6 or 7 laps to pick up some sheet metal on a track this big.
I DO think it took too long. Way too long.
Out of the drivers outside of the top 10 without wins (Carl Edwards, Paul Menard, Marcos Ambrose, Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, et. al) who has the best shot at winning two races before the chase and earning the wild card?
As crazy as this sounds, it might be Ambrose because he could win both road course races.
Even with Vettel doing a drive of the NJ F1 circuit for next season, it seems like there are doubts it'll take place. What would potentially prevent the race from happening?
Money of course. That's always the bottom line in F1 with Bernie running the show.
Have you ever been to Montreal for the F1 race? I have heard it is quite an experience. Can Lewis Hamilton and McLaren challenge Red Bull?
I have and it's a great course in one of my favorites cities. The NW race there always as been a wild show, as well. But the F1 race Sunday was really interesting and Hamilton drove a superb race. He may be the most skilled driver in motorsports today.
As a Jeff Gordon fan it's sad seeing his decline. Do you think it's best for Jeff to retire and keep what dignity he has remaining and stop embarassing himself and the once proud #24 team?
First, I don't think he's emabarrassing himself. They've had some terrible luck this year. Jeff still has a few good years left in him.
On Diloon, didn't you think he was racing way over his head when he wrecked out Buescher and then hid behind his crew guys when James went to straighten him out?
No I don't. Ty and James were overly aggressive at that point with 30 laps or so still to go in the truck race at Texas. Their crew chiefs needed to tell both of them to settle down. But that's just part of being young. For the most part, give me a driver who is pushing the throttle to lead over a guy holding back any day. Both those kids have enormous talent, but they got a little carried away in the moment there too early in the race. Just part of the learning process.
Watched the IRL race this weekend and have 2 comments:1) LOVE the new body style2) Really liked the BLACK and white target car. Looked 'meaner' than that boring red and white one.Oh yeah, liked the oval racing too.
Amen Tim, althought Dario may think that black car is jinxed after the way it race Saturday night.
2 engine failures in 2 races for Rowdy is unacceptable. Do you think Coach and JD need to reunite Rowdy and Jason Ratcliff since they won so many races together in NW?
No chance of that happening, and it doesn't have anything to do with engine failures.
Sorry, read your original answer wrong. Thought it said "don't".
Maybe it did, but the cautions were way too long, which is what I said today in our Turn 4 answers also.
Do you think that the sheer number of experienced drivers elongating their careers (Martin, Burton, Gordon, et. al) has limited the opportunity for younger drivers to get in good rides? Or did the late 90s-2000s spoil us?
It's all about what sponsors are willing to do. Sponsors are less willing these days to take a chance on a young driver, so they stick with they guys they know and the ones they see working well with their clients and customers.
what is the rumor i m hearing petty to dodge
Still just a rumor at this point. Richard is pretty happy with Ford. And a deal wih Dodge would have to include some type of engine program, which is a major investment.
I thought that Pocono was one of the best races this year. It had a little of everything. Drama with all the speeding on pit road. Just the right amount of yellows to bunch the field back up and finally JR had a car that could win. What is your view of the race?
Best Pocono race in a long time. I applaud them for the changes they made in repaving the track and shortening the race.
Terry, what's your take on the 88 and 24 going for a splash of gas at the end of the race? Both could use a win badly and I'm surprised they didn't "swing for the fences."
I think they got surprised by how many laps were run under caution. They probably should have gone for broke, but no one thought NASCAR would run that many caution laps.
Do you think Terry Labonte will be a hall of famer? If so, do you think he gets in on his first ballot?
Not first ballot, but he'll get there eventually. A two-time champ and a man who is well respected among all his peers.
Do you think a big team will pick James Buescher up and run him in the Nationwide or Sprint Cup Series full time next season?
I don't think James is ready for Cup, but it all depends on sponsorship. He will get to Cup eventually.
Just read on Jayski, RPM is announcing they are going to dodge this weekend at Michigan. Good move or bad?
I think you mean they will go to Dodge next year and will announce it this weekend. If it's true, I think it's a good move. Petty and Dodge go way back. And I think it's great that Dodge is staying in Cup.
I'm glad Pocono was shortened to 400 miles. Do you think other races should be shortened (or expanded)?
Absolutely. Frankly, I don't think any races other than the Daytona 500 should be 500 miles or 500 laps. And I don't think the Coke 600 should be that long anymore. It's an eternity. In the past, these distances meant more because it was seeing who could get their equipment to last until the end. That's not much of a factor anymore.
Do you think Andretti Autosport would be interested in joining the Cup ranks anytime soon? Kind of extend their Penske/Ganassi rivalry to another series?
They've talked about it, but it all depends of whether the financing was in place, a big if. And if RPM is going to Dodge, that probably means Andretti isn't coming to NASCAR, at least not in 2013.
any chance of the cup cars going to Montreal to race on the road course?
Highly unlikely since Cup races at Watkins Glen, which isn't far away.
Do you think F1 getting 2 US Grand Prix and Indy car on the upswing is the reason for declining fan interest in NASCAR?
I dont think there is declining interest. Attendance is down because of the economy. F1 is the world's most popular series, but NASCAR still is far more popular nationally than either IndyCar or F1.
With Indy car going to Houston and maybe COTA in Austin, why does Indy car need TMS?
Because they need to race on high speed ovals to remain viable to the mainstream racing fans in the U.S. It dumbfounds me that a series based on the biggest and fastest oval track in the world (Indy) wants to abandon are other high-speed ovals.
If you had a fantasy league which 5 drivers would you start this weekend?
Hamlin, Junior, JJ, Kyle and Brad K
If Petty goes to Dodge, where does that leave Ambrose? Didn't he go to Petty just because of his history with Ford?
Drivers are tied to teams, not the manufacturer. He'll race whatever they race.
Do you think the Dinger can get things turned around in the 22 car this season?
I think had been disappointing. I think AJ has talent, but they just haven't gotten it done this year. I don't see him making a big charge to the front.
Gotta run folks. Enjoyed it, as always. Have a great week and enjoy the race at Michigan this weekend. It will be warp-speed fast on that new asphalt.
