Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly chat. We had a little bit of controversy last week didnt we with Pacquiao-Bradley? And this weekend we have Chavez vs. Andy Lee. I have plenty of stories and blogs up, the schedule is updated and we have other fights on the horizon. So let's get to it.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Big setback for Mike Jones Dan. I know Top Rank had big plans for him. Was he really overrated? He seems to make some boring fights.

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

Very boring fights and he just doesn't have "it." No killer instinct and he let a guy who throws 25 punches a round knock him out. I dont think we'll ever see him become an elite fighter. That was a bad, bad loss to Bailey.

adam [via mobile]

I like the potential Alvarez-Ortiz fight. It will be good to see Canelo in there with a live dog.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

I agree, excellent fight. Ortiz, however, has to take care of Josesito Lopez next week and you never know what will happen.

AL M (NYC)

Freddie Roach's chat was 18 minutes long, Duane Ford just said he gave you a Chatting Lesson #boxinglesson

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

jose (miami, fl)

Honestly Dan, Do you think something shady was up with these judges? I mean even the judge who got it right was off with his 115-113 score. What's up with that? Can this decision be overturned?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

There is zero chance the result will be overturned unless some actual proof of corruption is found, which I dont think there is any of anyway. The drug tests Nevada does came back clean so that wont change it either. Just horrible, horrible judging.

Aaron (Cincinnati)

I have seen plenty of boxing lessons where a fighter landed 19% of his punches.....only it's the losing fighter that lands 19%

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

Judges dont have access to CompuBox stats but it was VERY VERY VERY obvious Bradley was landing way less punches and the ones he did land did no damage anyway. You can land 19% but if you hurt the guy with those shots its one thing. Bradley landed 19% and did no damage.

RK (Bronx)

Poor Vinny

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Poor Vinny Maddalone, who will fight (and get knocked out by) Tyson Fury on July 7.

Jason (Philly)

How come a couple weeks ago when I said Bryant Jennings was the next great American heavyweight you told me to "settle down" but this week you write an article titled "Bryant Jennings best US heavyweight hope?????

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

I said IS HE? I didn't say HE IS.

lady (Philadelphia airport) [via mobile]

The fight was fixed! The fight was fixed!

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

LOL. She was boarding the plane and I was already in my seat when he she started hollering at me, like it was my fault!

DangerGrainger (Myrtle Beach)

If the review on pacman vs bradley comes back different, could pacman get his belts back?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

You never know what the crazy organizations will do but I do not think the WBO will take Bradley's belt. No.

Ron (Tucson) [via mobile]

Dtm. Wouldn't you agree that victor ortiz always seems to lack a certain mental toughness ? I think lopez has a good chance.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

He's had one fight where he didnt show mental toughness, against Maidana. He showed an awful lot of it against Berto.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Danito. Now that Pacquiao and Bradley will likely rematch who does Juan Manuel Marquez fight now?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I dont think there will be an immediate Pacquiao-Bradley rematch. I think we'll probably see Pacquiao-JMM 4 next anyway. My opinion.

clay (chattanooga)

hey dan, after seeing Pacman be forced into a loss by the judges last week i have absolutely no idea what's going to happen in TX this weekend with a Chavez on the card! hoping for the best!'

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

I wrote on that topic in a blog today: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1293/can-lee-get-fair-shake-in-texas

Adam phx [via mobile]

Any truth to the rumor that when margarito hung up his gloves for good plaster came pouring out of them?

chris (chantilly)

should Bailey get some kudos. He didn't just knock out Jones, he knocked him the F*** OUT!

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

All respect to Bailey. Best one-punch fighter in boxing. He has one weapon, a right hand, and he uses it well. He could knock out ANYBODY.

Jackson (IA)

Forget current P4P punchers, Randall Bailey has to be up there with ALL TIME biggest punchers in the game. Basically broke Mike Jones' face with two punches. Unreal.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Agreed.

Mike (DC)

GBP has 3 co-feature slots on 7/14, 7/21, and 7/28. Which fights could land there?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

All under discussion right now.

maniroc (Cicero, IL )

Max mentioned on the PPV broadcast that some media people saw Bradley winning. Which media?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

There are two media people I know of who scored it close for Bradley: Tom Hauser and Brian Kenny (who was the blow by blow announcer for Top Rank's international telecast). I respect both of them and both are friends but I strongly disagree with each of them. I joked with Brian after the fight that he had been away from boxing for too long and that he might as well just go back to MLB Network and stop scoring fights.

ryan panganiban (rockton, il)

Who do you think are the most competent judges and referees in boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

There are plenty of good referees and judges. On the referee side I think very, very highly of guys like Kenny Bayless, Steve Smoger and Tony Weeks, among others. As for judges, there are also a lot of good ones. I think two of the very best are Julie Lederman and Steve Weisfeld.

Gail Van Hoy (TX)

The judging last week in Nevada...outstanding!

Sam (London)

Rather than drug testing, they should test Deontay Wilder's opponents for a pulse before a fight. his next opponent has lost SEVEN in a row!

Jason (Philly)

Why such a HUGE outrage over pac bradley...there has been plenty worse decisions such as in pernell whitakers career (olympics, chavez, de la Hoya)...its the human factor...honestly pac should have knocked bradley out then no theres no issue..Braldey not a great fighter, pac is

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

This was one of the very worst decisions EVER. That's why. It ranks right up there with Whitaker-Chavez, Lewis-Holyfield I.

Derek (Boulder CO)

You should see Margarito's house, the foundation is built out of his old gloves

Chris (Los Angeles CA)

D$ - I sure hope Lamps gives Ford a #boxinglession tomorrow night.

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

#boxinglesson

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

Here's my story on Andy Lee and the bond he has with trainer Emanuel Steward as they head into Saturday's fight with Chavez: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8055891/emanuel-steward-andy-lee-corner-every-way

Rob (Denton, Tx)

Please tell us there won't be Canelo-Ortiz and Sergio-Chavez on the same night.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

The promoters talk that nonsense right now but ultimately these things work themselves out. No, I do not believe they will both fight on Sept. 15.

Beto (Compton ca. )

Mayweather said "nothing can break Floyd mayweather" looks like jail is breaking him. What do you think?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

That lack of bottled water is just BRUTAL.

Willy (Brooklyn)

The fight was fixed Dan. Did you see Arum's face after the decision? Then he wants to cry about it? He just wants to avoid a Mayweather fight like he's been doing for the last couple years.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

It wasnt fixed. Stop drinking the Kool Aid.

Luis Ruiz (Cathedral City)

With the controversial win over Pacquiao, a lot of heat on Tim Bradley. Once this Pacquiao saga is over, do you think Bradley will ever recover in the public eye? or did the judges ruin his career

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

This isn't Bradley's fault at all. All he did was get in great shape, promote the fight like a pro and get in the ring and fight his rear end off as best as he could. The judging has nothing to do with him. He just fought the fight. So the horrible scores are not a reflection of anything negative about Tim.

MacDaddy (Philly)

King Freak, Can you tell my boss to let me out of work, I am wasting away here in my 8 x 8 cube and unable to chat like the world class boxing freak I am.

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

GET SOME BOTTLED WATER!!!! Everything will be OK.

Peter (NYC)

The glass team!! David Haye Chris Brown and Drake

Jeff (Greensboro)

Do you think we should go back to the days when the Referees were part of the scoring of the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

No, they have too much to worry about in keeping control of the fight and protecting the fighter if needed to worry about who won the round.

Julio (Panama)

Danilicious, how much interest do you think Pac-May has loss, if any, due to recent events. ..CHeers

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

The interest has been on the wane for awhile now but this hasnt changed it for me.

Kieran (Washington DC)

How about having former fighters judge fights? Or is it possible that events during their careers may bias them.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

I discussed exactly that in my Ringtones this week. Check this out, it has some of my suggestions to improve scoring: http://espn.go.com/video/clip?id=8048666&categoryid=2491554

Ry (OH)

I find it pretty pathetic that everyone is trying to blame the broadcasting crew for influencing fans who watched on television. I guess they must have played that same commentary on the loud speakers in the arena as well, since EVERYBODY at the fight also had Pac winning. Very lame excuse.

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Agreed. I didnt hear one word of the commentary until late Sunday night when I got home.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

Can we all agree open scoring won't solve the problem!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Yes, it wont solve the problem at all.

Jr (Bay Area)

I think the bigger issue is having judges who are past there prime(nice way of saying too old) judging these type of fights.

Stan (PA)

In Freddie Roach's chat he said there should be mandatory retirement for judges at 65. Do you agree?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

No. I think it depends on each individual.

MacDaddy (Philly)

Dan, do the 3 judges sit next to each other or are they on different sides of the ring??

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Different sides of the ring.

AL M (NYC)

Freddie Said in his chat this is Jr last fight at MW and is moving up to 168 for his next fight, wants pavlik next , just talk or is this serious business?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

I think he'll have at least one more at 160 if they are able to make Martinez for the fall.

Koichi (NYC)

Age shouldn't matter in judging, Harold Lederman is up there in age and he scores fights pretty well imo.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Agreed. But I thin IN GENERAL as judges age the scoring becomes a bit shakier.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Shame on Rojas for saying that Arce is a coward. Does he not know that Arce is on the Gatti List?!?!?!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

LOL. Exactly.

JoJo (Thousand Oaks, CA)

How many more stay-busy fights against C-list opponents is Vanes going to have before he fights a top 10 guy? This kid is dying on the vine.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

Agreed. It's ridiculous he has not had a real fight in ages.

Tommy (Vancouver)

Dan, What is gonna be next for Rigondeaux?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

TBA.

Luis Ruiz (Cathedral City)

Whats next for Sergio Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Looks like the the winner of Chavez-Lee.

Derek (London)

Dan, have you ordered your 'Ain't toe stopping us now' t-shirt yet?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

Not yet.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

DTM, what other active fighters would you put on the list of best 1-punch power fighters, alongside Bailey?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Wladimir Klitschko for sure.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Do you think Canelo is a Main event PPV fighter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

We'll see, but he has a fan base and brings fans. The numbers will tell us after Sept. 15.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

How come Canelo-Ortiz will be on PPV showtime not PPV HBO?

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Because they made a deal.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Any news if the Rios bout is going to be replaced?

Todd (Florence, SC)

Dan - Official pick time. Chavez Jr. or Lee?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

I love Lee's chances but I am going with Chavez for the win.

Adam phx [via mobile]

Whats up with you odlh getting in to it on twitter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

We often have back and forth.

leo (charlotte)

we need more boxing lessons,lol

Angel (MiAMI)

Lamont Peterson?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

What about him?

Mayo (New Jersey)

Paulie Malignaggi vs Randall Bailey, 147 "title" unification in October ar Barclays???

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

I wouldnt be surprised to see Bailey offered a fight against Devon Alexander on Showtime in August.

Anthony (PA)

Dan, is it common practice to already have a rematch date set in a rematch clause?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

The date was not in the contract. That was the date Arum could set with the PPV industry in the month of November because it was what was available.

Joe (Vancouver)

Why wouldn't Andre Ward fight Chad Dawson at 175 and why did he demand to have the fight in Oakland? The great ring warriors in boxing history like Robinson, Armstrong, Greb, Langford, etc were never afraid to travel and never reluctant to move up a few pounds to fight a champion.

Dan Rafael
  (12:39 PM)

Ward didnt demand anything. He was willing to go to 175. The promoters worked it out and Chad was agreeable to 168. As for the site, again, Ward didnt "demand" anything. The promoters detrmined, obviously, that Oakland was where the most money was.

Jeff (Las Vegas)

I think Randall Bailey may have broken "El Terrible's" record for time reemerging in DTM's top 10. How long has it been . . .like 8 years since he was ranked?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

A lonnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggggggggg time.

Ryan Morgan (North Kingstown, RI)

Dan Rafael vs ODLH, most entertaining brawl on twitter.

brian (ca)

were you surprised to learn pac has been borrowing huge amounts of money from Arum? That does not sound good for Manny

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Not at all, been common knowledge for years.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Can't tell you how many idiots I saw on message boards pointing to the "rematch" cardboard cutout as evidence of the fix being in. People didn't realize that it was a trash-talking ploy.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Obvuiously. But the message board warriors arent often smart enough to figure that out.

Brady (Golden Valley, MN)

You got some face time on the undercard bouts on DirecTV last week sitting behind Mario Lopez....did you visit with him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

LOL. Mario and I are friendly with each other. Known him for years from the fights. He's a great guy and a major fan.

Todd (Florence, SC)

I still think Paulie vs. Zab makes too much sense as the fight to open Barclays. The atmosphere would be amazing. You think there is any chance of that fight being made?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

I would be interested in that but I dont see that happening in the Barclays opening fight.

Orlando ((UK))

Ignoring the decision in the Pac/Bradley fight. Did Manny show you enough to keep his #2 spot on the P4P list?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Manny will remain 2 in the new p4p rankings later this month.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Wow. A lot of people are in this chat. Its looks like we really aren't "done with boxing."

Matt (Preston, UK)

How about Mannys womanising - was that common knowledge as well?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Yes.

Anthony (Houston)

Thoughts on the Atlas outburst?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Which one?

Jim (Santa Monica)

Chambers or Adamek?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

I'm going with Adamek on points.

Joe (Cincinnati)

I may be way off here, but I have always thought that is would be difficult to score a fight sitting ringside. Especially when fighters are all the way across the ring. Do judges have monitors they look at?

Dan Rafael
  (12:45 PM)

No, they dont although I've seen judges take a look at big screens between rounds, but by that time they have already turned in their scores.

Mike (DC)

Is EPIX picking up Chisora-Haye?

joe (nh)

any progress reports on PW?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Nothing new, working in rehab. Hoping for the best for Paul.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Heard Rios weighed around 160 this past week, and some people suspecting weight was a factor in him pulling out against Herrera, dunno if thats true, but given his struggles with the scales, isnt it almost probably that he outgrows 140 real fast too?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

It's possible I suppose. I saw Brandon in Las Vegas last week and he was NOWHERE near weight. Had to be AT LEAST 20 pounds over.

Duane (Vegas)

I thought Teon Kennedy was in the process of giving Rigondeaux a "boxing lesson" too!

Matt (Preston, UK)

Chisora - Haye, two of the most likeable guys in boxing... I'm praying for a double knockout.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

LOL!

Tom (Pittsburgh)

Last saturday in a span of about 10 seconds my mind went "Wow that's a really close score card... someone actually thought Bradley won this fight?....Oh My God WTF just happened"

Manny Pacquiao (Manilla)

Sorry I was late, I had to watch a basketball game before I could make $30M at my real job. And btw, I was only watching in a rooting capacity cause I dont gamble anymore...

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

EPIC!

Brandon (DSM)

Let's be fair. Rounds 1 & 2 were close. And 10,11,

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Fine, so you have it 8-4 for Manny.

John (Pensacola)

Dan, any early estimates on the number of PPV buys for Pac-Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Nothing solid yet.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Floyd's bottled water complaints this week should once and for all remove him from the Gatti list...

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

#bottledwater

Pete (Texas)

I have heard rumors that the Caballero vs Mikey Garcia fight is in trouble and Garcia might fight Orlando Salido instead. Have you heard anything?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

It is likely not going to happen and Garcia could wind up facing Salido on Showtime in th fall.

TOEjam (TOEronto)

Dan it should be TOEtally fun watching David Haye and you inTOEract during the Epix broadcast of Haye vs Chisora!!

Peter (Las Vegas)

Dan!! sorry im late to the chat i was streching my calves!

Nicky (Riverdale)

Hey Dan - Big fan of yours, with that said, I disagree with you about Margarito's HOF chances. He has a shot. A true WARRIOR. He is a big man Johnny Tapia!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Dude listen to me very very carefully: He has ZERO chance. Z-E-R-O.

Mike (Massapequa )

My 15 year old son went to bed when the 12th round ended and said let me know how much Pacquiao won by . That has to be the worst decision I've ever seen . The guy who had Pac winning 115-113 sucked

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

The only chance Margarito has at getting into the HOF is if he buys a ticket like everyone else.

Ruben (El Centro, CA)

I used to be a Brandon Rios fan. Now i'm just getting tired of him

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

I'm hearing that sentiment from many of the Fight Freaks in today's chat queue.

Jackson (IA)

Watching the fight last weekend, my buddy and I were talking about how this was maybe the best Manny performance in a couple years. And then...BAM!! Blindsided...

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Agreed. It was as good as he has looked in quite a while.

Mike (Miami)

Atlas after the decision said the fight was set up and Bradley won because Manny is leaving Top Rank? I avent seen any evidence of that since. This isnt Atlas' 1st outrageous claim. Shouldnt ESPN be holding their personalities accountable?

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

I had never heard that about Manny and I'm in contact with those folks a lot.

matt (cleveland)

any news on where the golovkin pirog fight land

joe (nh)

Whats going on with Berto? Do you buy it that it was a mistake?

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

It's hard to buy that considering the substance.

Dom (Philly)

Doesn't Oscar realize that decisions like last weekend aren't good for golden boy either? 90% of the public doesn't see this as a top rank/bob arum problem.. they see it as a boxing problem

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

Oscar doesn't get it unfortunately.

Duane (Vegas)

I judge based on how many times I saw Bradley's face land on Pacquiao's fist.

Ted (Seattle)

The only way Margarito gets into the HOF is if the voters are CJ Ross and Duane Ford.

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

OMG!!!!! Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sam (NO)

Were the people in the arena upset that Manny was keeping everyone waiting?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

I wouldnt say upset. Seemed like folks were wondering what was going on. I was getting updates from a friend watching the telecast so I was informed.

Lazer (Brooklyn )

Steward has some serious affection for Lee, sounds like a proud father when he's talking about Andy

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Yes, he does. This fight means a LOT to Emanuel.

Brian (Denver)

Dan just remember when things like this happen we all look like schmucks....and nobody wants to look like a schmuck

Dan Rafael
  (1:01 PM)

Classic Arum quote at the postfight presser.

Jon (Spring, TX)

Dan, What do you make of Bob Arum's claim that the Pacquiao-Bradley situation could be remedied with Open Scoring? Officially, Pacquiao didn't 'lose' until the final 3 rounds. Thanks

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

All open scoring would do is let us know the theft is coming but would not do anything to prevent it.

omar (Santa Barbara)

A chat Is incomplete without Joel Julio

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

B.B. (San Antonio)

Dan, what are your thoughts on having more judges ringside like some have suggested. Maybe five scorecards instead of three?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Just two more opportunities for bad scoring.

Pete (Texas)

I think Chavez Jr has come a long way. Where his last name use to help him to get him recognized I think it hurts him now because he he will never live up to it even though he is an above avg fighter.

joe (evansville)

what happen 2 juan baby bull diaz????

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

He retired.

the duder (Portland, OR)

Paul Williams is complaining less than Floyd Mayweather.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Wow. Good point.

Nicky (Riverdale)

Ok so Dan you believe, Wright, Mosley, and Tapia are going to HOF but not Margarito. Why? Give me one good reason.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Banishment? Are you hungry for this moron?

David Haye (England)

Timothy Bradley's feet looked fine to me. #toe.

Matt (Naperville, IL) [via mobile]

Are you as tired of listening to how "this is another example of boxing is dying" as I am? Wilbon and Kornheiser didn't even watch the fight, but commented on the sport like they knew it all...

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I dont respect their boxing opinions so I dont even listen anymore.

Craig (Mission Viejo, CA)

How about a little love for the late Teofilo Stevenson? The greatest amateur never to get a chance to go pro.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Was certainly an all-time great amateur. Would have loved to see how did as a pro but it never happened.

Joe (San Francisco, CA)

Any word on ticket information for Ward-Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Not just yet.

Keith H (Seattle)

Listened to your podcast with Stephen A. Smith. Does he just not get it? The fact he has a platform and a loud voice doesn't make him an authority.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

We had an excellent discussion on his show. A good debate.

Scott (Detroit)

I was shocked to read on ESPN today that the MGM had 2000+ unsold seats for Paq v Bradley. I assumed the venue always sold out for Mayweather and Paq fights.

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Not this one. And not with Mayweather either.

Bob (VA)

You were on a world tour of radio shows? Was that your busiest day ever?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

It was way up there. I did something like 2 SportsCenters and 8 radio shows on Monday ranging from multiple national ESPN radio shows, to several ESPN affiliates around the country to Australia.

Richard (NYC)

Where is press row located in relation to the closest judge for the Pac-Bradley fight? Was your view as good as the judge?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

I was seated in the first press row in the middle of the row, basically directly behind the timekeeper but slightly to the left. The judges were seated on the other three sides of the ring at the apron. I was probably 6-8 feet from the apron. I had a perfect view.

Dan Rafael
  (1:14 PM)

You can listen to my segment with Stephen A. Smith from the other day here: http://espn.go.com/espnradio/newyork/play?id=8038405

Palo (Mexico)

So, you think Bob Arum is going to let GBP make a fight in one of biggest boxing nights ( Sept 15). How do you see this getting solved?? ( obviously if JCC Jr wins tomorrow night)

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Like I said earlier, these things get ironed out. September is a long way away.

Anthony (Houston)

were the round-by-round judges scores ever released?

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

Sure, we get copies of the scorecards after the fight at ringside.

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

Did you have trouble checking into MGM? I read that all of their properties have computer issues. I saw a lot of angry people in the lobby.

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

It was insanity but when I checked in it was about midnight Tuesday night and I was literally the only person at the check in desk so I had no problems. The next day there were insane lines almost out the door.

the duder (Portland, OR)

Dan, do you remember tweeting that you "knew something weird was going to happen tonight" while Manny was stretching his calves?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Yes I do.

John (Richmond, Va)

Dan Rafael KO 6 Stephen A. Smith

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

LOL. Stephen A's my man. I didnt want to hurt him.

Mickey (Chicago)

Ugh, just noticed it's my 1 year anniversary at this crummy job...1 year of alt+tab and praying my boss leaves me alone on friday mornings.

Dan Rafael
  (1:20 PM)

Happy Anniversary!

joe (evansville)

did jesse vargas leave mayweather promotions??? what about gamboa status???

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

Vargas' contract was up and he is a promotional free agent, although he has signed with manager Cameron Dunkin. I talked to Vargas when I was in Vegas. They're talking to promoters. As for Gamboa, nothing new yet.

Carl (CA)

Any news on whats next for Miguel Cotto

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Nothing right now. Just relaxing after the tough fight with Floyd last month.

chuzen (st. louis)

c'mon dan, we all know you were carrying stephen a. those last few rounds

Tap Water (Nevada)

I'd just like to go on the record stating I don't enjoy Floyd Mayweather either.

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

PAY THE MAN, SHIRLEY!! That is all-time greatness right there.

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

BTW props on shutting Stephen A. Smith DOWN!!! This week! Only CJ Ross and Ford thought you lost that debate!

jose (san diego)

any fnf tonight dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:26 PM)

No, off this week.

Rick (Philly)

Just curious, are you allowed to approach the judges after the fight for a comment if you want it?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

They are not available to media after the fight.

JP (Columbus, OH)

Dan, by the way - congrats on your PacBradley prediction. I'm guessing you're a little more proud of the Lewis-Rahman 1 prediction, no?

Dan Rafael
  (1:28 PM)

Exactly but it does count!

the duder (Portland, OR)

Dan, I'm losing muscle tone during this chat. My lawyers will be in contact...

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

The CJ in CJ Ross stands for Corrupt Judging

Dan Rafael
  (1:30 PM)

Wow.

Mike (Portland)

Dan. Were you pleased with Rigo's performance last weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes, he looked very good but it was no surprise. It was a major leaguer vs a AAA guy. Kennedy didnt belong in the ring with him. I was on the same flight out of Vegas with the Kennedy and Mike Jones teams. Nobody looked very happy.

Gerardo (Los Angeles)

Dan-O, will the Pac-Bradley fight be replayed before Chavez fight tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Yes, the show opens with the replay.

Tommy (Chicago)

What do you think about Judges being required to be available to the media after the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

They should be accountable and available at the very least to a pool reporter.

Alec (Nashville)

Dan, did you re-watch the fight on DVR? Did you score it again? Same score or slightly different?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

I did rewatch it. At best I could see 9-3. MAYYYYYYBE 8-4. But NO WAY IN HELL I can find 7 rounds to give Bradley.

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Here's my blog from yesterday updating Chavez's weight situation: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1284/weight-issues-lighter-for-chavez

Bree (LA)

You think I could visit Floyd if I brought him a Brita?

Don (Miami)

I had a ton of respect for Tim Bradley for how hard he fought and for his overall body of work until recently when he started to open his mouth about how he won the pacquiao fight. I don't expect him to admit he lost but at least keep your mouth shut.

AJ (NYC)

Im rewatching thunder/heat game 2 with the sound off. without all the biased ABC commentary i think the thunder actually won.

Dan Rafael
  (1:36 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Jeffrey (Austin, TX)

What time is weigh in for Chavez vs Lee?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

I believe about 1 pm CT.

Eric (NY)

Are you going to be able to make it to any of the Nats-Yanks games this weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

Yes, I have tix for Sunday's game and looking forward to it.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan will SHO EXTREME be broadcasting fights before next week's main broadcast?

Dan Rafael
  (1:39 PM)

Yes.

Inmate (Clark County (Nev))

HARD WORK! DE-HYDRATION! HARD WORK! DE-HYDRATION!

Dan Rafael
  (1:40 PM)

I dont even know what to say to that one.

JON (MAIMI)

I hope Chavez Jr-Lee ends in a KO. More bad decisions than the ones i made in college

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Agreed.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Will you be attending Victor Ortiz-Josesito Lopez fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

No. When Berto dropped out, I canned the trip.

the duder (Portland, OR)

All of the "never-againers" are going to miss one helleva a fight between JCC and Andy Lee.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

Exactly!

SteveoDewhurst (Preston, UK)

Do you think Tyson Fury is being matched softly on july 7th?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Very.

Chris (Bay Area)

Dan, are you planning on coming to Ward-Dawson?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Yes sir.

chuzen (st. louis)

the nbc fights have been great. any more planned after adamek/chambers card?

Dan Rafael
  (1:44 PM)

Yes, there are more shows coming.

joe (evansville)

Have u read any new boxing biography's?? if so can you recommend some

Dan Rafael
  (1:45 PM)

I just got a new book about Joe Gans sent to me yesterday, but I have not read it yet.

Mike (NYC)

Dan, much props to you for defending Boxing this week. I heard you on Stephen A. Smith show. Bad decisions happen in boxing unfortunately this TV personalities talking how the sport is dead when they have no true knowledge of the sport is what hurts the sport.

bboyks (colorado)

Dan, having ex-fighters judge fights might be a good idea, as long as it's not Oscar De La Hoya he has been known to take rounds off.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

lol.

joe (evansville)

how come manny pacman never fights in new york city??? can u imagine him fighting in the garden????

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

He wont fight in a place with state tax, which limits him in America to Nevada, Texas and Florida as boxing states.

Patrick (SAC)

i seen several bad decisions but i will never stop watching boxing i love it

Choco (New Jersey)

Does ESPN ever ask you for advice on proposed fights for FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

Nope.

the duder (Portland, OR)

Any truth to the theory that PAC was going to take the belt to WCW so Vince had him drop the belt.

Dan Rafael
  (1:48 PM)

NICE ONE!!!

Shower Door (Nevada)

Money is SOOO lucky he doesn't have to face me in his diminished state while in jail.

JC (Mass)

Popo vs. Morales. Interested?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

I'd watch that for sure.

Nicky (Riverdale)

Dan, why do you think Tapia will be in the HOF as he was banned from the sport just as well as Margarito was banned? Actually, Tapia was banned for a longer period of time? Please explain, it makes no sense?

Dan Rafael
  (1:49 PM)

Ummm Tapia was a drug addict who hurt himself and overcame it enough to come back. Margarito cheated in a manner that could have severely injured his opponent. Are you that dumb?

JD (NY, NY)

will the arce-rojas fight be rescheduled?

Dan Rafael
  (1:52 PM)

Unlikely to be a rematch. Arce is going to fight Donaire in the fall most likely if Arce wins July 7.

Manny Pacquiao (Las Vegas)

Sorry i'm late....again

Amere (Nashvile)

Cant wait to hear your commentary for Toe-Chisora if epix picks it up, any chance of a #toe reference in your commentary?

Dan Rafael
  (1:53 PM)

#toe

Richie (Bronx NY)

Dan, I had Bradley winning!!! Thought his face landed better shots on Pacquiao's Left Hand.

chuzen (st. louis)

when buffer announced the first score last weekend, did you have an immediate gut feeling that there was gonna be a robbery?

Dan Rafael
  (1:55 PM)

No, I figured Manny would win split.

Duff (Los Angeles)

Dan, did you see your old "friend" Shannon Briggs lost a half-million dollar lawsuit to an ex-publicist this week? Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Dan Rafael
  (1:56 PM)

What a shame.

Dan Rafael
  (1:57 PM)

Saw this story on Briggs: http://www.tmz.com/2012/06/09/shannon-briggs-publicist-lawsuit-judgment/

Joe (Seattle)

When will the next boxing telecast for epix be? loving your commentary

Dan Rafael
  (1:59 PM)

Thanks. We're doing the July 7 Klitschko-Thompson rematch.

Jay (Long Beach, CA)

Funny story. At the start of the fight, I was complaining to a friend that Harold Lederman was being tacky criticizing one of the judges as having a history of inconsistent decisions, he was really tough on her (ironically he praised Duane Ford). Turns out, as usual, Lederman spot on!

Alexandre (Montreal)

Adonis Stevenson vs Sakio Bika under Pascal - Cloud. Buy or sell ? And could it be possible ? Bika just got ranked #9 by the IBF.

Dan Rafael
  (2:02 PM)

Possible. They continue to go down the rankings. Yvon Michel told me they are down to Kessler, who obviously isnt going to take the fight.

chuzen (st. louis)

dan, what kind of opponent do you expect next for pavlik?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

He and his team say they want a major fight. It could be Bute.

John (Phoenix)

Does Bradley get any of the PPV revenues or just the $5 mil?

Dan Rafael
  (2:03 PM)

He will get upside on the PPV assuming it reaches his contractual threshold, which it obviously will.

Drew (NJ)

Gotta say I was not very impressed with Mike Lee last Friday. Do you see him as a fighter with real potential, or is he just a good story because of his Notre Dame background?

Dan Rafael
  (2:05 PM)

He did not look good at all. He got a lot of hype because of his background. It's not everyday you see a A-student from Notre Dame turn his back on a possible lucrative Wall Street career to fight. But just because he didnt look good in that fight doesnt mean he cant still improve. He is a hard worker and has a good team behind him. But his ceiling is a bit limited. I know thing though - he will give it his all, which is all you can ask for.

Kevin (Boston)

Dan it could have been worse, at least Manny handled it with class as opposed to going on an incomprehensible rant, blaming HBO, and saying he was going to showtime.

Dan Rafael
  (2:06 PM)

Good point. Kayode could take a lesson.

Bryon (Chicago)

Done paying money to watch boxing. That simple.

Dan Rafael
  (2:07 PM)

Wonderful.

the duder (Portland, OR)

Dan, just read the Andy Lee/Emmanuel Steward story you wrote. Awesome stuff. Just more reason to root for Lee, who you know is going to BRING IT.

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Thanks. Hard not to like those guys.

Juan (San Diego)

CJ Ross and Duane Ford just said there are TWO Ricky Hattons!

Dan Rafael
  (2:10 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!

Jeff (Ohio)

I rank Pac-Bradley as the WORST big-fight decision of all time, because at least Sweet Pea and Lennox didn't get the L in their robberies. I know it's splitting hairs, but that's the way I score it.

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

I agree completly. A draw was bad in those fights but better than a loss.

Duff (Boston, MA)

Hey Dan, have you ever been to The Rock for a fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:11 PM)

Yes.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Danno, you're obviously disturbed with the ruling last weekend as with other boxing analysts. Do you think this is the last straw, in terms that something is finally going to change in order to save the sport?

Dan Rafael
  (2:14 PM)

No and the sport does not need "saving."

Duane (Vegas)

Chuck Giampa's "Inside the Mind of a Judge," debut was insightful and articulate. He gave us all a "judging lesson."

David ((NY, NY))

What has Floyd's reaction been to the outcome of the fight?

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

I have no idea. I think he's got other things on his mind right now. #tapwater

Dominique (Quebec)

I can't for the life of me understand how a short prison sentence will ruin Floyd's boxing career. Several top boxers have had prison sentences interrupt their career and have gone on to have some success after the joint.

Dan Rafael
  (2:16 PM)

Duh.

David (Chico )

Any news on El Perro?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

In jail.

Koichi (NYC)

Who's filling in for Steward in the booth for tomorrow's fight? Roy Jones?

Dan Rafael
  (2:19 PM)

Yes, it will be Lampley, Merchant and Roy Jones.

Mike (Los Angeles)

I noticed Vans wasn't on the schedule for tomorrows card. Has he been snubbed from the card?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

He has moved to the July 7 Donaire undercard.

Kevin (Dallas)

Does Andre Ward deserve any flack or criticism for fighting Chad Dawson at 168 and in Oakland?

Dan Rafael
  (2:20 PM)

None whatsoever.

Freddy (Buffalo)

Why did it take so long for Tommy Hearns to be inducted in the hall of fame? How long do you have to be retired for?

Dan Rafael
  (2:21 PM)

He was inducted in his first year of eligibility. He fought from time to time and it always re-started the five-year clock.

Mike (Los Angeles)

Dan, I will boycott boxing... until tomorrows JCCJr/Lee fight tomorrow night on HBO.

Lee (Los Angeles, CA)

Can you recall ever having two big Boxing PPVs on the same night competing against each other?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Yes, but only once. I think it was Showtime doing Holyfield-Toney/Corrales-Casamayor 1 and Top Rank (distributed by HBO) did Morales-Espadas 2 on the same night. Not exactly the same audiences though and as I recall Morales PPV didnt start until 10 pm ET instead of 9.

Ozair (NJ)

What do you think about Teddy Atlas's comments that last Saturdays result was due to Arum being upset that Manny was planning to leave Top Rank?

Dan Rafael
  (2:25 PM)

Irresponsible. I'd like to see some proof.

Rob (Brooklyn)

Mayweather 42-1. Tapwater 1-0.

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

For a sport that is supposedly dead, the amount of questions and comments in the queue today is massive.

Kenny (Lakeville)

All the newbies that thought last week's decision was bad, buckle up for the judging in Texas tomorrow night!

Dan Rafael
  (2:26 PM)

LOL!!!

Erik (Atlanta, Ga)

D$$$ why are you so hard of Floyd, you know better! You of all people should know the incredible harsh circumstances a lack of water pressure can cause! LOL

Scott (Miami)

In 2006, Tarver-Hopkins PPV and Cotto-Malignaggi were on the same night.

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

OK, that's another. But very very rare.

Anthony (Brooklyn)

Teddy has ALWAYS been irresponsible. Remember those "emails" about Pacquiao's drug testing?

Dan Rafael
  (2:27 PM)

Still waiting to see them.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

What are your thoughts on Jesus Rojas calling Jorge Arce a coward?

Dan Rafael
  (2:28 PM)

He should watch Arce's career DVD and see how many pints of blood he has spilled and the balls he has shown time and time again. Maybe Rojas shouldn't have committed like three fouls simultaneously.

Dan Rafael
  (2:29 PM)

For the record, I AM drinking bottled water during the chat today.

Mike (NYC)

Hey Dan why not pitch a show to ESPN called Final Round a half hour show talking boxing news and analysis of upcoming fights.

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Good idea.

Colin (Philly )

Anything new on Gary Russell?

Dan Rafael
  (2:30 PM)

Fighting a nobody on June 30 on Showtime.

Duane Ford (Denver)

No spoilers please. I haven't seen the fight yet.

Dan Rafael
  (2:31 PM)

LOL!

chris (chantilly)

do you think Lampley was caught in the moment, or do you agree that last weekends decision was the worst?

Dan Rafael
  (2:32 PM)

It was horrible.

Floyd Mayweather (Clark County)

HARD WORK, ISOLATION!!!!!

Jim (WI)

Was Pac's decision worse than RJJ in the Olympics?

Dan Rafael
  (2:34 PM)

Nothing is that bad. Nothing.

Mike (DC)

Will HBO make a fight to replace the Rios fight on the 7/7 BAD?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

I would hope so but nothing set at this point. Rios just dropped out. Maybe give them a few days?

CannonFodder (Brooklyn)

Dan, how do you rate the now *even more broke* Shannon Briggs' chances of getting another Klitschko fight in his new home of Dubai?

Dan Rafael
  (2:36 PM)

LOL.

Mike (Massapequa)

floyd is in his cell making it rain with shredded toilet paper

Dan Rafael
  (2:39 PM)

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting. Make sure to check out all the news stories and blogs and enjoy the fights this weekend with Chavez-Lee and Adamek-Chambers. Have a great weekend and talk to you next week. Peace.
