Keep sending in those questions. We'll get started in a sec.
I'm hoping Durron Neal can be the punt returner for OU starting this season. I thought Kenny Stills was awful last season, although I understand he was less than 100%. He just seemed to be happy to simply catch the ball and down it. Just like when he lined up as a receiver, it looked like he was playing not to get hurt. Your thoughts?
Kenny was a little banged up last season. He's the conservative choice back there. He might not take any to the house, but he's probably not going to fumble either.
How's the running back rotation going to look this fall? Whaley and Williams the main guys?
No, I see Finch and Clay being in the mix, too, especially with Whaley coming back from a major injury. Clay had a really solid spring, and we all know what Finch is capable of.
How concerned should Sooner fans be about Greg Bryant's visit to Auburn?
He's told Bob P. that he's solid to OU.
do you think ou will make it to the big 12 2013-14
Yes, the Big 12, against all odds, has stabilized.
Better record Oklahoma or Oklahoma St?
I really enjoy your writing and would brag on you more but for your sake I will leave it there. Does Mike Stoops have the talent to have a top ten defense?
Thanks, Tim. Yeah, Mike has enough pieces to put together a top 10 defense or close to it. The secondary would have to really solidify, though, because there doesn't appear to be a first-team all-conference performer up front.
Whats the progress with manning?
Nothing really new. Still feel like OU is the leader right now.
Recent information I've read implies that some of the 2012 recruiting class may have issues getting onto campus (Gary Simon, Charles Tapper, Alex Ross). Do you know anything about issues with these guys?
The only one of the three yet to enroll is Tapper.
Who is more under-appreciated Russ Westbrook or Landry Jones?
Landry Jones is more under-appreciated locally. Russell Westbrook is more under-appreciated nationally.
Is there a chance a Big twelve team gets shut of the BCS in its final year?
A BCS bowl or the national championship? "Yes" to the tile. "No" to the BCS bowl.
In hindsight, is it safe to suggest that Brent Venables defense required more thinking than reacting? At times there seemed to be too much finger pointing of the, "you should be over there!" variety.
I don't know about more thinking vs. reacting... I do know that there will be less thinking and more reacting among the DBs with Mike Stoops than before.
If D. Whaley is not at 100% who is the most likely to be the feature back, Finch, Clay, or someone who has yet to play? Neither Finch nor Clay seem to be a total package type RB. Transitions are alway hard to predict, but what are your thoughts on the JUCO RB Williams?
Yeah, Williams seems most cut out to be that feature back, if something happened to Whaley and OU wanted to reduce the rotation number. But Finch and Clay are good players, especially, if you can limit their touches and keep them healthy.
The scuttlebutt in Hollywood is that Joe Mathis is not very likely, or at least not as likely, to join his cousin at USC? Have the Sooners continued to recruit him hard? What is the latest word out of Norman?
Really haven't heard much about Mathis lately. I'll check with Bob P., though, to see if he's heard anything.
Are we done if we lose Game 4? No way we beat the Heat three games in a row, right?
Yes, done. Tomorrow is a must-win.
Who are the coaches hoping emerges behind Stills and Metoyer?
Trey Metoyer, obviously. After that, Durron Neal, Sterling Shepard and Courtney Gardner.
Coach Stoops needs to stop worrying so much about when (night games) his team plays and more about getting them ready to play. Doesn't he understand when he whines to the media about little things like this that he is removing accountability away from his players if they perform poorly? Effectively building in an excuse which is what losers do. I bring this up as further evidence that "Big Game Bob" is slowly losing his edge that made him a winner.
Stoops is right. OU has played an inordinate number of night games, which usually make for tougher road games because the crowds are more in to it. Then again, I don't think OU beats OSU last year if they play the game at 8 a.m.
How would you describe the program's trajectory at this point? My concern isn't necessarily that the Sooners are regressing, although there are a few signs of that. I'm more concerned that much of the rest of the league is improving while the Sooners are standing still at that just below nationally elite level that may not play as well in an increasingly competitive Big XII. Legitimate concern, overreaction, or something else?
It's hard to be too hard on the program. After all, Ohio State, Florida, Texas, USC, Michigan, etc... have all gone through slides over the last 5 years. But this is a big season. OU had a bad year in '09, good year in '10, and mediocre (by OU standards) season last year. Under Stoops, OU never once has failed to win the Big 12 in three of four years, which is what's at stake.
Can Jordan Phillips be a difference maker up front? And do you see any of the DE's taking the next step?
I do. The question is, will it be this season? RJ Washington has the potential to elevate his game to the next step. We'll see.
Correct or not, it sounds like whining to me..Line it up and play ball.
Which OU player has the best chance of winning the Heisman?
Landry Jones, although as long as the Belldozer is around, it will be tough for Jones because the touchdown stats will be down.
Will people get off my back now, and relax, now that I've landed Jordan Mastrogiovanni? Or will there just be more noise in the channel now that Brent Venables landed the #1 prospect in the country (Nkemdiche)?
Guess we'll have to wait and see, but this is a tough crowd to please.
Over/under on kick offs returned for TD's against OU?
Jake, rank the Big XII's middle class in terms of long term staying power and ability to contend for conference titles: Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, Baylor, KSU.
No. 1 OSU. After that, there's a dropoff. None of those other schools have what OSU does facility wise.
could you see Chuka Ndulue being a guy that surprises some people or is he still a work in progress?
Both. Chuka really came on late last year, and had a nice spring. He's the third DE right now behind RJ and David King and figures to play a lot. But he still has a ways to go. I think he'll be a nice player for OU this year, with upside for 2013.
Give me the over!!!!
What happened for us to be so short in numbers of our secondary?
Few guys have left there. Still 13 scholarship players in the secondary. You can get by with that.
I'm excited about the new linebacker commit. Do you think he'd be ready to play as a true freshman?
Yeah possibly, especially because it would be in a backup role. But going from high school to college at LB is a tough transition because of all the calls, reads that have to be learned. That's why you rarely see true freshmen start there.
Do you see Trey Metoyer having a similiar season as Sammy Watkins had last year. Since Trey was consider a better reciever than Sammy by recruiting rankings and also having a better QB than him?
Yeah, I can see something like that, maybe freshman All-American. Watkins was the No. 1 option in Clemson, and Metoyer at worst will be the No. 2 guy with an experienced QB.
Does OU finally get out of Lubbock with a win this year after dropping the last three there?
It's only June, but TT in Lubbock already has me worried. We always have at least one game a year where it looks like the D has never seen the forward pass. Trap game or redemption?
I wouldn't overlook that game. Tech has some pieces coming back, and that's always been a disaster zone for the Sooners, for whatever reason. Sooners could easily lose that game if they bring their "C" game or worse.
Are the Sooners pursuing any of the Top TE prospects still available?
Sooners like Hunter Henry, Danny Mattingly. Henry the No. 2 TE in the country. Mattingly a Top 60 athlete.
Is that little reciever from Fresno St going to get to play this year?
I suppose it's possible, but I doubt it. I would be surprised if he were granted a waiver.
How does OU's facilities rank with other programs and how much does that affect recruiting these days?
OU is very solid in that area, outside the dorms. But they're working on new dorms right now, which figure to be among the best in the country. Facilities have an impact, which is why you've seen OSU become competitive in recent years.
Major holes to fill on defense. With Tony moving to safety, who's going to make up the linebacking core? Wort calling the shots on the field?
Wort at MLB, Corey Nelson at WLB. Would be surprised if it were any other arrangement.
Now that Tim Kish has finally gotten off the snide, and landed a recruit, with Jordan Mastrogiovanni. What other players that he's the lead recruiter on might be committing to the Sooners?
Michael Hutchings (Concord, Calif./De La Salle) and Marcus Newby (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) are two of the bigger names. Hutchings is ESPN's No. 4 OLB. Newby is the No. 19 OLB. Both 4-star guys.
Any way Trey Millard finaly gets more carries? no matter how heathy Whaley is, Millard should get more carries, IMO.
Agree 100 percent, and I know Stoops does, too. The question is, how will Heupel fit Millard into the game plan. I felt like he underutilized Millard at times last season.
What are the chances the OU/TX game will be played at night in the next 2 - 3 years? It seems like night games are all the rage these days.
Zero chance. Can you imagine the pandemonium of an OU-Texas being played at night? The Dallas jails aren't that big.
Totally random NBA draft question: would it be worth it for a team to draft Royce White at, say, #30 and just use him in home games? It seems like you could get a lot more value out of that than from a typical 12th guy or from a draft pick that doesn't usually do much for you. Plus, if he ever gets more comfortable with flying, you could get a real bargain. Seems like an option to me: you could have a guy who's essentially never tired in half your games.
That is random.
Have you interviewed Tim Kish yet? Thoughts? He has some doubters...
yes, but not much yet, since he didn't arrive until January. I'll have a better feel for him by October.
Am I looking through rose colored glasses or is the demise of Landry toward the end of last year greatly exaggerated? The pundits point to his TD/Int ratio, however I think the TD reduction was more the success of the Belldozer in the redzone than anything else.
It's somewhere in the middle of that. Landry wasn't his best late last season, but part of that was he lost his two best offensive weapons in Whaley and Broyles, then had Bell chip away at his stats, which made the problem look worse than it was. Landry is capable of bouncing back in a big way this season, but he does have to show more than he did at, say, Oklahoma State.
Jake, which sections in the Cotton Bowl are the OU side? I'm going to bite the bullet and buy tickets from Stubhub for my first live RRR game and want to make sure I'm not in enemy territory. Humor the rookie please.
You want to buy seats on the south side of the stadium. Here's a link to the seating chart: http://www.cottonbowlstadium.com/seating
Apparently the jury has reached a verdict in the Roger Clemens case... Your prediction?
Wow, he was just found not guilty on all charges.
Miami 2 - Thunder 1... more a case of The Thunder choking (both early and late, depending on the game) or The Heat taking it from them? SHUT IT DOWN!!!
Didn't you post two weeks ago when San Antonio had OKC down 2-0?
Which current recruit do you see making the biggest jump in rankings, from now to NSD?
Hard for me to say. That's on our evaluation staff (Tom Luginbill and Co.), which does a tremendous job evaluating recruits.
So how rowdy will the BCS chats be? I can see a scenario where Slive yells at Delaney "Of course you prefer conference champs be represented over the best four as your conference champ is rerely a top 4!!!" Oh to be a fly on the wall..
There are better walls to be a fly on.
When does fall practice start?
Only date I have is Big 12 media days, which are July 23-24.
What is the most exciting thing about OU football this year that would be a surprise to most casual fans?
That OU might be decent on special teams. Tress Way and Michael Hunnicutt are solid in the kicking game, and some of incoming freshmen could give the return units a boost.
Who is your favorite Sooner of all time?
Not sure I have a favorite , but I always liked Rickey Dixon because of the way he high stepped on interception returns.
Did you see noticeable improvement in Blake Bell's passing in the spring?
Yes. Very noticeable.
Who's faster, me or Kenny Stills?
I don't know what Collins ran in the 40, but Jamelle Holieway once told me that he ran a 4.5, and that he was the slowest one in that backfield by far. Stills is one of the fastest WRs in Stoops has coached, but Collins could fly.
When I say "he" ran a 4.5, I mean Holieway. Collins probably ran a 4.4 at least.
Have you seen the new OU football intro videos yet? Have they even made them yet? They're not bad usually, but I still feel like there's a next level they could go to...
No, haven't seen them. I assume they'll be working on them this summer. I didn't like last year's as much as previous ones. Give me less of current players working out in the summer and more plays from OU's great players of the past.
Guys, that's all the time we have this week. Thanks for stopping by. We'll do it again next week, same time, same place. Until then, have a great week.
