Fantasy MLB with AJ Mass

AJ Mass
  (11:00 AM)

Good morning gang! We've got 60 minutes of fantasy chattage up ahead, so let's get right to it. Second cup of coffee in hand... who is up first?

Dan (Boston)

Third cup of coffee and my eyes are barely open: Cozart or Hardy ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Close call, but I'd lean to Hardy.

Anthony (New York)

DICKEY!!!!!!! Is it time to sell high? It seems for real. What kind of "wow, I've got to take this deal" offer would it take to get him?

AJ Mass
  (11:02 AM)

Verlander or Votto. That's how good he's been and there's really no reference point for a knuckleballer like him with so many Ks that aren't "chase strikes".

Uncle Charlie (New York)

Hey AJ. I'm losing BN space with a slew of injuries. Who should I drop out of Berkman, S.Santos, Morrow? Thanks!

AJ Mass
  (11:04 AM)

Generally speaking, always drop the SP. Morrow has a strained oblique, so it's not an elbow thing like with Beachy, but still...

Will (ATL)

Any chance the cubbies find a way to give full time spots to rizzo and campana anytime soon?

AJ Mass
  (11:05 AM)

LaHair is playing RF, which may mean Rizzo is coming soon. Campana would probably stay in OF.

Mark (NY)

Rios or BJ Upton ROS? Seem like basically the same player

AJ Mass
  (11:06 AM)

A little more pop from Rios. I'd go with him in category-based formats.

Andrew (Atlatna)

Ranks these three ROS please. C Santana, M Montero, J Montero

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Jesus, Miguel, Carlos.

Ryan (NYC)

Closers ROS: Clippard, Wilhelmsen, Putz

AJ Mass
  (11:07 AM)

Wilhelmsen, Clippard, Putz.

Tom (Palmer, MA)

AJ, I finally read your book! Great read! Is Sale and Ackley for Kipnis a fair trade? 2b is my team's only weakness, other SP's are Greinke, Stras, Bumgarner, Dempster and Latos.

AJ Mass
  (11:08 AM)

Thanks! Not sure the upgrade is worth the value of Sale. If you could get him for Latos and Ackley...

Stephen (Long Island)

Lost Beachy for year I presume... do I grab Burnett/ Mad Max/ or Fister?

AJ Mass
  (11:10 AM)

The words no fantasy owner ever wants to hear? Dr. James Andrews. I'd go with Fister.

Matt (Houston)

AJ, in my keeper FFB league our keepers locked as of midnight last night. One owner didn't lock up Rodgers. Two questions. 1) It's a no brainer I take him #1 overall (even with Brees as my QB) and 2) Our buddy is now crying foul because he said he clicked on the wrong player to keep and he wants the commish to change it out. Rules are rules I say, and he made a mistake so there shouldn't be an allowance for him right?

AJ Mass
  (11:11 AM)

Poker players know the phrase "significant subsequent action" - in other words, an immediate reaction by this owner saying it was a mistake is enough to allow LM to change it out.

Jim (NJ)

Wade Miley ROS? Can he continue?

AJ Mass
  (11:12 AM)

Short answer is yes. I'd say he's a No. 3 SP in a ten-team mixed ROS.

Floyd (Arizona)

Aj, Would you consider Alfonso Soriano a buy-low candidate at this point considering he might traded soon?

AJ Mass
  (11:14 AM)

Obviously a lot depends on where he ends up, but he's played well enough where teams will actually want to trade for him... that speaks to "buy low" status.

P-Mart (Bethesda)

Whats your personal strategy on using the #1 waiver priority (ive been sitting on it all season)

AJ Mass
  (11:15 AM)

I think you use the wire when you need to use the wire. I think it's pointless to wait for months hoping to get Bauer or Rizzo only to either have them flop, or failing to address real needs that might have helped your team for the 2-3 months you've been waiting.

Ahmad (Detroit)

Did you really just suggest that Mat Latos is a viable trade piece? Did you watch him pitch last night??? He is an HR machine and his ERA is over 6!!!

AJ Mass
  (11:17 AM)

Did you read what the question was and my response??? What I suggested, sir, is that the difference between Kipnis and Ackley value-wise right now is closer to Latos than Sale.

KC (New York)

Latest updates on Trevor Bauer? Do you think Zona's gonna make some trades for him to promote him?

AJ Mass
  (11:18 AM)

They may end up going with six SP for a bit to ease Bauer into the rotation, but expect Saunders to be sent away soon... it's getting close to Bauer time.

Matt (RI)

I've noticed an anomaly brought on from Interleague play where starters are facing the same team twice in back to back starts (e.g. Mike Minor vs. the Yanks). Should I feel hesitant in starting these pitchers the second time around as the team has already become familiar?

AJ Mass
  (11:20 AM)

No more so than any other pitcher going back-to-back. It happens all the time, and while I have no numbers on it, I'm pretty sure the results of the second outing have little correlation to how the first one shook out for most pitchers.

Steve (LA)

Who is the favorite to fill in Beachy the remainder of the year?

AJ Mass
  (11:21 AM)

Jair comes back, Medlen and Teheran get in the mix as well. Best results stick.

Matt (Boise)

Are you a believer in either Nova or Hughes lastest starts? Both have looked outstanding...but is this just because they are facing NL lineups?

AJ Mass
  (11:22 AM)

I'd use Nova only on the road right now, given the splits. I am starting to come around faster on Hughes. Both No. 5 options for me right now, though.

Matt (Dallas)

I was almost certain Lincecum would get at least a QS vs SEA. Am I dreaming or do you think it's coming this week vs OAK?

AJ Mass
  (11:24 AM)

You simply cannot start Lincecum until he wins a game at this points. All signs point to this being far more of a mental issue than physical. If it were something the team could point to, they'd have skipped a start by now.

Todd (CA)

I picked up Ike Davis and played him last night. What do you see for him ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:25 AM)

One homer, even a GS, does not cure a season's worth of ills. There's a mountain still to climb, and I am not sure he's got the right sherpa with him.

Eric (Chicago)

Latos STINKS...come on AJ. He's a BUM!

AJ Mass
  (11:27 AM)

Why ARE you yelling at ME? Have you ever heard of the phrase "preaching to the choir"?

Ricky (LA)

trade jennings and reddick for carlos beltran?

AJ Mass
  (11:29 AM)

From a value standpoint, it's a fair deal. As much as I have had no faith in Beltran keeping it up all year, we are running out of time for me to be right.

bob (ny)

Lowrie or Rollins ROS? Rios or Rasmus?

AJ Mass
  (11:30 AM)

Lowrie and Rios.

Griffin (Chicago)

Hanley or Young at 3b ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:32 AM)

Hanley, though the looming lengthy road trip may be rough to get through.

Andy (Portland)

Ailva still 12-team viable?

AJ Mass
  (11:34 AM)

As a C, yes - given the position. As a UT, no.

Daniel (San Fran)

Any update on Longoria? please help!

AJ Mass
  (11:35 AM)

Left his Triple-A game on Monday after feeling discomfort in the hammy. Not a good sign. Pushes him back a week at least, I'd wager.

Andrew (Atlanta)

Hosmer or Craig at 1B ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:37 AM)

I say Craig.

G Money (Tampa)

Start Weaver tomorrow fresh off the DL?

AJ Mass
  (11:38 AM)

No. I rarely, if ever, choose to do that. Reasoning is simple. Odds are a SP is watched far more closely in these starts, lessening chance of a QS. Plus, if he's just not 100 percent ready, one bad inning could kill my WHIP and ERA far more than an 0-for-4 by a hitter would.

Jeff (ME)

Would you trade Peavy for Edwin Encarnacion?

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

It's a fair deal and should you need hitting more than pitching, then you do it. I'd rather have Peavy, in that darn vacuum.

Daniel (Chicago)

I dropped RA Dickey for Bartolo in April!

AJ Mass
  (11:40 AM)

Someone give Daniel a hug.

Sean (Seattle)

So we cut Beachy now, right? He is not going to have a second opinion and come out clean, right?

AJ Mass
  (11:41 AM)

Never say never, but I'd say we're talking the difference between attempting to rehab versus going for Tommy John pronto.

Kevin (Louisville, Ky.)

Any updates on Car-Go's knee?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

Strained. MRI negative. Day-to-day.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Did you write a book or something?

AJ Mass
  (11:43 AM)

So I've heard:

Roger (Indiana)

Any updates on the return of Ellsbury or Crawford? There doesn't seem to be much news on either lately.

AJ Mass
  (11:45 AM)

Jacoby is just starting to swing the bat. July at earliest. Carl ready to begin a rehab stint soon. Probably same time-frame.

Pat (Bronx)

Cole gets back on track today right?

AJ Mass
  (11:46 AM)

6.08 ERA in last four makes me wonder.

Tyler (VT)

AJ, Why do I get the feeling that if I pick up Rios, he will immediately go into a tail spin?

AJ Mass
  (11:47 AM)

Ha! There is no spoon.

Arvydas Sabonis (Lithuania)

Plouffe...try to shop him now?? Plouffe or Carl Crawford?

AJ Mass
  (11:48 AM)

Bit of a BA albatross, but with all the buzz surrounding him, his value certainly couldn't get higher. I'd rather have him than Carl, though. Flexible positionally as well as you know, healthy.

Pat (Boise)

Harrison,Fister, or E Jackson for a Beachy replacement

AJ Mass
  (11:49 AM)

I go Fister, slightly ahead of E-Jax.

JP (the bar)

Jemile or Rickie ROS?

AJ Mass
  (11:50 AM)

That's a Weeks question, bro. Jemile for me.

Jenna (New Mexico)

Do you think Y.Molina will finish as the top Catcher this year if not who do you like?

AJ Mass
  (11:52 AM)

It's Yadier by a lot. Chooch and AJ only other legit possibles off the top of my head.

Michael (Atlanta)

I'm dealing with struggling stars right now in McCann and Pedroia. Any light at the end of the tunnel?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

More confident in McCann becoming what you expected than Pedroia at this point.

stevaroonie (new york)

wieters or mauer ros?

AJ Mass
  (11:53 AM)

Mauer for me.

Danny (Concord, NH)

Thoughts on W-Y.Chen? Will his managers or his fatigue limit his innings? Thoughts on him ROS, esp. from an AL Only League perspective? THANKS!

AJ Mass
  (11:56 AM)

I liked him more than Darvish in the spring, simply because I thought he was a better *pitcher* - not just a *thrower* -- but I also knew both would likely slide post ASB due to fatigue. I'd try and deal, though I think he's legit.

Adam (NYC)

jeff samardzija droppable at this point? have Weaver coming off DL

AJ Mass
  (11:57 AM)

For Weaver, sure. I mean, if you're asking me to choose between those two. Shark's a No. 5 SP right now...Jered's at worst a No. 2.

Nate (Florida)

1B Points Rank: Morneau, Craig, Freeman

AJ Mass
  (11:59 AM)

Craig, Morneau, Freeman

Lee (ABQ)

drop Maybin for Raja Davis?

AJ Mass
  (12:00 PM)

I'd drop Maybin for Raja from "RuPaul's Drag Race" at this point.

AJ Mass
  (12:01 PM)

That's the whistle! We've got to go, but fear not! We're back at 2pm with Tristan for our weekly Vokle chat. Plus, I am @ajmass on Twitter! Until the next time, thanks for the Q's. Good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
