Hello everyone to the weekly AFC North chat. Thanks for joining in on the fun. Let's kick this off.
The Browns CAN'T go into the season with their current receiving core can they?... Wait, Can they? Do you see them making any moves at all to sure up the worst receiving core in the NFL to help their rookie QB?
I would be very surprised if there was a major addition made to the Browns WR group. Cleveland had a chance to add an impact player in free agency and in the draft. The Browns decided not to do it. That was the point when they should've made the move.
What AFC North Team will have the Best Defense in 2012?
Steelers. The Ravens are without Suggs. The Bengals will be without Leon Hall for a period. And the Browns will be without Phil Taylor. I know Pittsburgh might not have Casey Hampton, but I still see the Steelers defense as the class of the AFC North.
Why is it that the nfl is most popular sport in america but they are the only league that doesnt guarantee contracts
With the amount of injuries in the NFL, guaranteed contracts would lead to bankrupt owners.
9-7 for the Ravens??? Really Jamison??? Really?????
Not sure why there is so much shock over this. The Ravens can have a down year every now and then. This is a team that's been to the playoffs for four straight seasons and now is dealing with a lot of off-the-field distractions. People are acting like I picked the Ravens to go 6-10.
In regards to Wallace how much money are we looking at? I would love to see him signed but not for Fitzgerald money. What will his deal do to their cap space issues?
Wallace won't get Calvin Johnson or Larry Fitzgerald money. But he should get more than Garcon and DeSean Jackson. A little over $21 million guaranteed on a five-year contract would be a fair deal.
How important will the 2nd Wide Reciever spot be for the Bengals because they already have Green and Gresham plus a slot guy in Shipley?
You nailed it by mentioning Gresham. This should be a breakout season for him. The pecking order in terms of receptions will be Green and then Gresham. But the Bengals still need to find a dependable No. 2 wide receiver. It was only one day, but I was impressed with how Brandon Tate looked at minicamp.
Will Justin Tucker make the team as an insurance policy in case Billy relapses?
The Ravens need someone with more experience than Tucker. He offers no competition. Baltimore will regret not bringing in a veteran kicker if Cundiff struggles.
What is Ray Lewis' legacy to you? Is he probably the greatest defensive player I will see in my lifetime? Im 31 by the way.
Ray Lewis is the best defensive player I've covered. No one even close. Some might argue Lawrence Taylor was more dominant during his time.
With the exception of Vincent Jacksons 9 week holdout, how many players really miss regular season games because of contract disputes? Something tells me we shouldnt be worried about Wallace/Rice/etc.
Patriots guard Logan Mankins also missed games to protest being a restricted free agent in 2010. I wouldn't be worried about Rice or Wallace missing games. Wallace should be there when camp begins and Rice will likely be there a few weeks before the regular season begins.
Hey Jamison keep up the great work. With the lack of speed and quality receivers does it make sense for the browns to at least reach out about Percy harvin since he is requesting a trade?
As Adam Schefter pointed out, the Vikings need receivers. They're not trading him. He's not coming to Cleveland.
Percy Harvin's chances of being traded to Cincinnati?
As Adam Schefter pointed out, the Vikings need receivers. They're not trading him. He's not coming to Cincinnati.
I will return to the field. Don't worry, I'll be splendid.
The Achilles injury has affected your ability to spell your own name.
Who do you see stepping up to fill Phil Taylor's shoes on the Brown's DL?
It's still a competition between Paxson, Hughes and Winn. Paxson was running with the first team during the two days of minicamp that I attended.
Hey Jamison, Do you think Marvin Lewis' contract extension is something that Mike Brown is delaying or maybe Marvin himself is holding off to see how things go with the supposed new changes in management philosophy?
My feeling on the situation is Brown has approached Lewis a few times about a contract extension. He wants to get it done. Lewis, though, gains more leverage if the Bengals get to the playoffs again.
Assuming they go deep into the preseason, which holdout could prove more detremental to their teams season, Mike Wallace or Ray Rice?
Rice. He's the centerpiece of their offense. Roethlisberger is the centerpiece of the Steelers offense.
How will the Steelers get under the cap for next season? if they are projected $10mil over with three recievers to sign who are they going to let go?
Let's at least start the 2012 season before we start talking about cap cuts for next offseason.
Might 9-7 for the Ravens even be pushing it? With the injuries, distractions, questions at LB and OL I'm very concerned about this team actually. A lot of negatives. I think this team misses the playoffs what say you?
I have the Ravens at 9-7 and see them in the playoff hunt. I agree that there are a lot of concerns with this team right now. The success of the team will depend heavily on Harbaugh coaching them up.
Hey Jamison, why no Postcard/report from Ravens mini camp last Thursday?
I will be posting some of my impressions from their camp over the next month. Suggs' talk to the media dominated by time that day.
when the ravens only win 4 games whos first to go harbaugh or ozzie? go jags!!
Since the Ravens are the only team to win a playoff game the past four seasons, Harbaugh and Newsome aren't going anywhere.
Did Eric Steinbach ever sign with another squad? If not, is Cleveland even interested in bringing him back at a renegotiated salary?
Steinbach remains a free agent. I thought the Ravens might have been interested. Don't be surprised if Chicago calls him. But there still must be issues with his back if no team has signed him yet.
I understand that everyone is waiting on Luck and RG3 to sign, but what are the chances that TRich will sign before them just to get it over with. I also am not understanding the hold up with Weeden as he was the 22nd pick, not in the top 10.
In previous years, draft picks didn't sign before July 4. So, there is plenty of time. There won't be any holdouts.
If Blaine Gabbert were my quarterback, i wouldn't be throwing any stone's.
Will Trent Richardson be effected by the amazing defesenes in the AFC North with arguable the best defensive divsion ?
Playing in this division will make it tougher on Richardson. But he's still a strong candidate to be NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
If I am wrong call me out but I see Wallace getting big money before this season and Brown gets a lower than first round tender next offseason.
I see the Steelers franchising Wallace next year and using a first-round tender on Brown.
Are you taking another vacation next week? You're due.
I will be off next week but I return the first week of July.
Why don't you go drink some Iron City, you Steeler loving freak!
I thought I was considered a Ravens homer. This is very confusing.
With the RB situation in Pittsburgh being what it is...do you expect a good season from Redman seeing as how Mendenhall will more than likely start on the pup? Meaning do you see a 1,000+ yard season for Redman this year behind an improved O-line and possible more Run Heavy oriented O?
Redman should be good for 1,000 yards rushing and about eight touchdowns.
Do you really only see the Browns winning 4 this coming season? With Ward returning to an already good defense, and adding TRich and a good RT, how do you not see at least 6-7 wins. I understand that the schedule is going to be difficult, but they were in almost every game last season.
Browns have the toughest schedule of any non-playoff team from last year. That's why I have them at four wins. Look at their wins from last year. All of the margins were very close. So you could argue that they should have won more games. Others can say they could have lost more.
Are you sick of all the various fans being critical of your "loyalty" or lack of it? I think you tell it like it is and I would be tired of hearing over and over how bad a job you are doing when you are doing quite well running this AFC North blog.
It is what it is. It's narrow-minded if you think I favor a team. I get paid to have an opinion. Shockingly, fans love the opinion when it's positive and hate it when it's negative. If you want everything to be positive, that's what team sites are for.
Will Andy Dalton lead his Bengals to the top of the divsion?
He's the key to it. If he struggles, the Bengals will have a tough time getting back to the playoffs.
Baltimore a top 10 defense?
That's to be determined. I would like to see a few games under the new defensive coordinator before giving out a prediction.
what does the DB situation look like for the Bengals? are they going to keep just 4 S and 6 CBs in order to keep everyone?
I think that will be the breakdown. The Bengals did a good job of adding depth at corner. Their safeties are unproven but there is talent there.
Why does Mike Wallace think he deserves the same kind of money that Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald make? He had a good season, but don't you also think that teams that play the Steelers a lot are learning how to shut him down? If a contract agreement is reached and he plays what kind of season do you expect out of him as well?
I don't think Arians made good adjustments when teams started shifting their coverages. What I like about Haley is that he gets the ball to his receivers quickly and lets them make plays. Look for Wallace to run more routes than just the go route. He should have a really good year. Wallace is still the No. 1 receiver.
What order will the AFCN RB's be in for yards this season?
Rice, Richardson, Green-Ellis, Redman.
Do you think the the Ravens improved secondary will give the depleted Ravens pass rushers time to get to the quarterback this year?
You can have the best secondary in the world, but defensive backs can't cover forever. That's why Suggs was so important last season. Most of his sacks came when the Ravens didn't blitz. Now, the Ravens are going to have to blitz more to generate more of a pass rush. The secondary can't allow receivers to get behind the defense.
Do you see Woodley and Harrison combining for 20+ sacks this season? And will Timmons rebound?
Woodley and Harrison should combine for at least 20. They combined for 18 last year and they weren't on the field together for most of the year. And Timmons will have a better year this season because he won't have to shift from outside to inside and back outside. He's a better inside backer.
Do you think Big Ben is the most underrated QB in the league? He always get critized yet hardly praised, the only thing he ever gets credit for is his scrambling ability but no one talks about how excellent he is from the pocket.
I would say he's underrated, especially for a QB who has won multiple Super Bowls. But I wouldn't say he was the most underrated. He's top 5 right now in my book.
I understand your point with even the wins being close. If Taylor had not gotten hurt, would this have changed your opinion on the subject. I would also like to say that to everyone that calls you biased, I would have to disagree. Keep up the great reporting!!!
The Taylor injury did factor into it. There is a big step down to whoever replaces him. And everyone knows the trouble the Browns had in stopping the run last season. Thanks for the kind words. Much appreciated.
How many sacks each for kruger and upshaw?
If they combine for over 15, that's a huge plus for the Ravens.
Are the Ravens still a Super Bowl favorite with Suggs out?
I would say contender, not favorite.
What percent chance you give the Bengals to win their first playoff game in forever this year?
The Bengals have set themselves up to have a good window to accomplish that over the next few years.
Browns another top 10 Defense without Taylor?
Not sure. I didn't like the fact they failed to upgrade at OLB. I don't understand why Fujita is still starting.
If the young corners step up big and Harrison and Woodley stay healthy, with an improved offense, how dangerous will the Steelers be this year?
My standard line is this: If Ben Roethlisberger is healthy and the Steelers have a top 5 defense, Pittsburgh has to be considered the AFC North favorite every year.
Werte the Ravens ever considered a favorite with Suggs?
The Ravens were within a dropped pass of getting to the Super Bowl last season. So, with Suggs, most would consider the Ravens among the Super Bowl favorites. Only a biased fan would think otherwise.
Do you see the Steelers bringing in another kicker to Camp? I don't think Suisam is the answer. His range is just to limited
The Steelers worked out Dave Rayner and didn't immediately sign him. I'm surprised that the Steelers didn't upgrade at kicker. I'm not sold on Suisham either.
Thanks for all the good questions. Just a reminder, I will be off next week. But we will resume the chat sometime in the first week of July. We usually meet on Wednesdays, but July 4th falls on that day. So, I will keep you posted on when the chat will happen. Have a great rest of the week.
