Hello everyone, let's get started
Will Tre Madden move back to linebacker next season since we have 2 backs plus nelson aghlor?
No. Lane Kiffin said he will stay at running back when he returns.
Do you think USC can get Jalen Ramsey, Chris Hawkins, and Priest Willis?
I think there is more of a shot at Jalen Ramsey than most people are aware of. There is talk of him making another visit to USC with his parents, so shortly after he visited a few weeks ago. That happened recently with Ty Isaac and USC fans know how that one turned out. Hawkins, of course, is already a commit. Not sure at this point on Willis' eventual destination but right now the Trojans are certainly on his short list.
What are USC chances with Nico Falah? Is he big enough to play offensive tackle?
Very good. He is favoring the local schools and the Trojan coaches have made clear he's a top priority for them. He's 6-4, 275, the recent tackle commits have been a little bigger but he's got the size to do it if needed.
Hi Gary, I wanted to know what Hutchings decision is coming down to? Is it coming down to which position he's being recruited to play, playing atmosphere, does he want out of California? It just seemed like USC was a lock with him and all of the sudden it's become 50/50.
I think it comes down to his comfort level. He was more comfortable on his Washington visit than he thought he would be and now he needs to judge how he feels at USC, especially his on-field relationship with new linebacker coach Scottie Hazelton.
what postion will leonard williams start off at?
Leonard will likely start off at the 3-technique defensive tackle spot behind George Uko.
What position is USC recruiting Kenny Bigelow?
Bigelow is also scheduled to be at the three-technique defensive tackle spot.
When do you think that USC will be the National Champions in College Football?
Who's the next must get for USC for the class of 2013 now that Su'a cravens is on board and do you think if Kenny Bigelow and Max Browne were committed to an SEC school you think they'll be rank higher in the ESPN 150.
I think the secondary guys are really important. This is a great year for DB's and the Trojans need to load up, they are off to a great start with Cravens and Hawkins but there are still plenty of top targets such as Redfield, Ramsey, Willis, Johnson, Hargreaves, etc.
i have two questions what is usc status with the robinson twins from san diego? and with impending sanctions for oregon will that make usc the favorite for vanderdoes?
USC is on the short list for the Robinson twins and the Trojans have offered in both football and basketball. It's hard to speculate on the Oregon penalties and any impact on Vanderdoes because there's no guarantee the penalties will be handed down in this recruiting cycle. Trojan fans know better than anyone that the NCAA can take their time.
Can USC overcome depth issues by signing players to Academic Scholarships and then have them walk on?
The Trojans will do that this year with several walk-on candidates. Cornerback Ryan Dillard is already taking part in workouts, he had other offers but elected to walk-on at USC with the help of academic scholarships. There aren't a huge pool of players who can qualify academically and be good enough to help but the coaches will be in search of them.
Hi Garry. Thus far who, of the incoming recruits, looks the best on offense and defense respectively, so far this summer?
We haven't really seen too many because most are waiting to be cleared by taking their physical. The thought is we should see them on Friday, at least that is what we heard for Agholor.
I haven't followed recruiting as heavily until about 2 years ago, but does it seem like more recruits are committing early? Especially one the west coast. Isn't it like half of the top 30 have already given a verbal commitment?
Yes, the recruiting calendar seems to be moving up earlier and earlier. The coaches aren't big fans of it because they are forced to make decisions on offers before they get a chance to fully evaluate a player in his senior year. For the players, they are often making decisions before the benefit of an official visit. Don't be surprised if the official visits are allowed to take place earlier to help combat this.
Hey old friend! Gary - pretty stoked about this upcoming season and I am even comparing our offense to the 2004 juggernaut. I think the O line is comparable. I think the 2012 version of WR's is way ahead suprisingly though I gotta give Reggie and Lendale props for being better in the backfield. But Barkley, sheesh, Leinart is not even in his class. What are your thoughts in comparing the two?
Good to hear from you. I'm not ready to say that Leinart isn't in Barkley's class, after all, Matt had a Heisman Trophy and a national title in his back pocket as he headed into his senior year. Barkley can't claim those yet. Any way you look at it, the Trojans (and the Mater Dei Monarchs) were fortunate to have both.
Hey everyone, we're going to go a little longer with this chat since I got kicked off my internet in the middle of this session. Just an FYI.
Any chance Gary of the Trojans offering a second QB, the Stanton kid?
I wouldn't rule out a 2nd offer but so far we haven't seen any indication of the coaches talking to other QB's. Kiffin likes to carry 4 quarterbacks at a time so it would make sense since, as of right now, they would only have three on the roster in 2013.
Will Max Browne redshirt or compete next year for the starting QB job? Will the lure of playing with Browne bring another top reciever this year and who is most likely to sign?
Max will come in next spring with every intention of competing for the job. If he doesn't get it, there is a chance he will redshirt. I definitely see a third receiver in this class, it could be someone like Sebastian Larue, Demorea Stringfellow or Tyree Robinson.
Why does USC keep Nortre Dame on the schedule? It is not like they are recruiting South Bend or any other Indiana locations. Why not pick up a team from the SEC each year for the recruiting as well as competition?
In my opinion, it's the greatest traditional rivalry in college sports. I don't think either side has any thought of ending it. But you are correct, not a lot of recruiting advantage to be gained for the Trojans by targeting Northwest Indiana prospects.
If you had to choose right now who would you take, Kessler or Wittek?
It's still very close, let's be clear about that. If I absolutely had to choose though, I would go with Wittek.
Hi Garry. How effective will CLK be in striking a balance between getting top-tier recruits to stay true to their verbal committments while continuing to give "contingency" offers should some ultimately decide to decommit? Is there a strategy in place? At what point does USC forego offering additional prospects with the hope that existing commits dont change their mind?
The ability to strike that balance is key to being an effective college coach with recruiting. I happen to think Kiffin knows how to play that game as well as any coach out there and you can be sure he has a plan of how to handle it. Kiffin is a very detailed planner.
Hey Gary, what seems to be the condition of Robert Woods? Is his ankle still swelling? And does George Farmer look like he may get some more playing time this season? Or make a bigger impact than last year?
Woods has yet to be cleared with his ankle, the hope is still to get him back by the middle to end of July and then to be able to go in fall camp. Farmer was out there yesterday doing light work in the throwing session, if he's healthy I don't think there's any question he would be the leading candidate for the #3 spot.
Hi Gary, Who is Jalen Ramsey--how big is he?
He's 6-0, 185 and a corner from Tennessee. A very good athlete, ranked in the ESPN 150. He made an unofficial trip to USC recently and could be coming back with his parents for another look. He has other offers from schools like Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee.
Which Trojan newcomer/new starter should fans be most excited to watch this season? Is anyone capable of having a Marqise Lee/Dion Bailey impact?
Nelson Agholor fits that bill the best. A very dynamic player with the kind of attitude that the coaches love. He'll be at running back to start fall camp but he can also line up at receiver if needed.
The 2013 commit list is heavy with offensive skill recruits right now, with the issues we have at DT, and O line and the apparent weak Ca class, who are the top OOS priorities and what are our chances with each? thanks!
D-line will be a huge priority with the remaining spots in this class, I also think we will see several more DB commits. Demarcus Walker is a d-lineman who has expressed a lot of interest while Jalen Ramsey and Priest Willis are two DB names to remember.
What's the latest on Christian Thomas? Is he healthy and ready to go? USC is loaded at TE. Do you think this will work to their benefit down the road given the lingering issue with Woods ankle?
I was hoping to get an update from Christian at the throwing session yesterday but I didn't see him there. I think he's a real weapon if healthy. It's not like SC is hurting at TE though, Junior Pomee is one of the more impressive looking physical guys out there.
Garry, outside of Oregon which game worries you most for 2012? The Utah game sticks out for me. I hate those Thursday night contests!
I'll go with Washington. It's the 4th road trip of 5 games at the start of the season, it's a game in a stadium the players have never played in before, the Huskies are looking for revenge and they have a quarterback who is good enough to pull it off.
How will Nelson Agholor be used this season? Position? A lot or a little?
Nelson will be used at running back at first and I think he will get used quite a bit. A real explosive athlete with the ability to break a big play at any time.
How does Nelson Agholor look in trowing sessions?
Nelson hasn't taken his physical yet so we haven't seen him out there. He arrived in town over the weekend and is scheduled to be part of the session on Friday.
When does the incoming class of 2012 arrive on campus and when can they start to participate with the team in workouts?
They are trickling in right now. By next week, we should see the majority of them taking part in workouts.
Hey, Garry, thanks for the chat. Gut feeling on where Hutchings lands July 1?
I still think Hutchings ends up a Trojan. He's been a USC fan for a long time and Kiffin and company will know how to close when they get him on campus next week.
In the (unlikely) case that Hutchings announces for Washington, who are the backup plans for our 1-2 Lbers?
There was a recent offer made to Tyrell Robinson as an OLB/DE and I see him (and his brother) as real options for the Trojans.
Why do I have the hunch that J. Davis is a better RB than T.Issac? Tall RB are rarely successful..I have the hunch hell be another Anthony Barr (Ucla) tall an athletic but not really a good RB what do u think??
There are plenty of people who like Davis more. I think Isaac is legit but Davis seems like a pure running back and I can totally understand why you would think he's going to be better. Trojans are fortunate to have both.
Should Trojans fans be concerned about Hutchings setting his announcement so quickly after Darrell Daniels commitment to UDUB? Is this an ominous sign that Tosh Lupoi is once again working his mojo with the Bay Area recruits?
Lupoi certainly worked his magic to help Washington get in the picture as much as they are but USC fans should feel good about the fact that the Trojans will get the last shot before he makes his announcement. He'll be at the Rising Stars camp next week and then announce a few days later.
How do you see Kiffin trying to keep his offensive players happy when there's only one football and you have players wanting there touches like Woods,Lee,Farmer,Aghlor, etc. with so much talent??
It's a good issue to worry about. I think we saw signs at the end of last year that Kiffin will know how to get huge numbers for his guys, that's not something he seems to struggle with. The players have supreme confidence in him right now at the controls of the offensive plan.
What are the chances that Blackwell (or Flournoy) can beat out Farmer for #3 WR?
It all depends on Farmer's health. If he's healthy, I think he's the guy. If he's not 100%, there will be an opening for either Flournoy or Blackwell. I still think Blackwell offers a real nice big play option.
Hey Garry, Do you think Steven Mitchell is another Jordan Payton who down the line will commit somewhere else or sc will go with another high profile receiver?
Not at all. I know Steven Mitchell has long coveted the SC offer and I don't see him wavering on this one.
When do you think Max Redfield will make his decision?
Max says he wants to wait until the Under Armour game to make his announcement. I put it at 50-50 that he waits that long.
Garry,When do you think that Nicoh Falah will announce and is USC that team?
He says he will announce in July. Right now I think he picks USC over UCLA.
How is Tre Madden recovering?
It's still very early in the recovery process but so far, so good. It's still a crushing blow to realize how good that position switch was looking, he really would have brought a unique presence to the backfield this year.
Were do you envision Su'a Cravens position of play. Will he be a safety or OLB? Also Im excitied to see Charles Burke after redshirting, how is the kid looking? Will he play this year?
I'm going to guess safety but I'm not ruling out OLB at all because of his potential for growing out of the secondary. I just think his ball skills fit so well at safety but the SC coaches made a successful switch with Bailey under similar circumstances.
Thanks everyone for coming, sorry for the glitch midway through when I lost internet access. See you next week.
