Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:07 PM)

'Sup gang? Sorry I'm a few minutes late - will stay late to make up for it. With the Manifesto out, we'll do more football questions than usual... but as always, all subjects answered

Rick (CA)

Don't say that no one saw Gronkowski coming. I took him because Bill Simmons predicted big things from him because he score lots of TDs in the preseason. Based on that, I'm sure many, many people saw him coming because Bill's got like a billion reading.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:09 PM)

Well, I was on a podcast with Bill and the guy we both were talking up was Hernandez. I think we also both agreed than Gronk was a nice red zone threat.... But if you say that anyone, Bill inculded, saw 18 touchdowns coming, you're insane.... Still have Gronk as my #1 tight end but him and Graham are MUCH closer than folks think. Would not surprise me in the least if Graham is #1 TE next year.

Timmy (CA)

Which has worse reffing, NBA or boxing?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:10 PM)

NBA. Not close.

Hank (CA)

I just read your manifesto. Where's Joe Flacco? He said that he's the best QB in the NFL. Are you calling Joe Flacoo a liar?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:11 PM)

From a fantasy perspective? Yes.

Dave A. (Boston)

Any new Jimmy Grahams this year? Who surprises us most at TE?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

Jared Cook. Kyle Rudolph. Martellus Bennett. Coby Fleener are some late round TE's I like.

Mike (PA)

You're on the clock with the 6th pick in the 1st RD of your fantasy football draft. Calvin Johnson, Brady, Brees, and Mathews are sitting there. TD Pass = 6 Points. Who you taking?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:12 PM)

Brady.

Kris Holm (San Antonio, TX)

Where do you get you Sabermetrics/stats, and is there a website that you would recomend for More advanced stats than is offered on ESPN?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:13 PM)

Fangraphs is very good.

KPaul (Atlanta)

There are too many weapons to choose from in Detroit. Calvin and Matt Staff are obviously stud material. But who can you trust to be a steady performer after that? Best? Leshoure? K. Smith? T. Young? Pettigrew?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:15 PM)

Trust? No one. Pettigrew and Young would be the best bets. Even if they pick a RB (and I'm not convinced they do, even if all are healthy), they won't run ball effectively or consistently.

Chuck (Durango, CO)

Need to drop one: Soriano, Chris Davis, Cespedes.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:16 PM)

Soriano is who I would drop. No upside there.

john (nj)

Football !! After reading the draft manifest I see the goal is to get the top 4 elite qbs..with that being said would you rather Stafford or Ryan Mathews..ppr league and all Td's are 6 points??

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:17 PM)

Srafford. Need to see Mathews play a full season first.

Nick Vogel (West Palm)

Keeper: I got Hultzen, Teheran, and Myers stashed on my bench...who gets called up first and who do you see having the biggest impact this season?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:18 PM)

Hultzen, but I'm rooting for Myers since I own him in a deep AL only...

AJ (Chicago)

Great job on the draft day manifesto. My question is after the 4 sure fire RBs (Foster, McCoy, Rice, MJD) and the 3 sure fire QBs (Rodgers, Brees, and Brady), Are you better off taking a QB (Cam Newton/Matthew Stafford) or a RB (Chris Johnson/Ryan Matthews)? I think the drop off from the Tier 2 backs, someone like CJ2K, to the Tier 3 backs, someone like Fred Jackson, is much steeper than the drop off from a Tier 2 QB, Newton, to a Tier 3 QB, someone like Rivers or Romo.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:20 PM)

Glad you enjoyed. Great question. Personally, I'd go Calvin in that situation. But if he was also off the board, I agree with you. I'd probably go RB and hope one of those QB's (or Vick) fell to me next round

Drew (Bourbonnais)

What do you expect of Doug Martin this year

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:22 PM)

Think he'll be a decent flex guy, but that's about it. Blount isn't going anywhere and Martin hasn't proven anything yet. We have him projected for about 800 yards rushng and I think that's about right...solid flex play

Andrew (WI)

Read the draft day manifesto. A work of literary genius, really. Am I correct in interpreting the difference between last year's philosophy and this year's is: Instead of the "Get a QB/TE early OR wait until the end" philosophy, it's now the "Get a QB/TE early instead of waiting until the end"? Is it a matter of being tougher to find hidden production in the draft, or just that the elite are more elite than usual?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:25 PM)

Even I wouldn't go that far but I'm glad you enjoyed it. You interpret it correctly. In the vein of "What's most likely to happen?" - you are more likely to get elite production from the upper QB/TE guys and find mid tier RB/WR that pop then you are the reverse. Yes, there are exceptions - people who drafted Gronk/Graham late last year or picked up Cam were happy - but that's more the exception than the rule. Again - what's MOST likely to happen.

Ryan (Columbia, SC)

Who's the biggest high risk/high reward player this football season?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:26 PM)

Vick, obvioously.

Fred (California)

Matty's Dating Advice Corner- If you and your fiancee (who weren't together in college) are going to a sporting event with a bunch of your old college friends, and someone's invited an ex-hook up- do you tell your fiancee about it before hand or just hope to get through it all without any awkwardness.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:29 PM)

Tell her about it. You did nothing wrong and my experience is that women, when it comes to group dynamics, more than anything, don't want to be embarrassed. If everyone knows something she doesn't and she finds out, she'll be upset. Give her a heads up but don't make it a big deal. Just a "FYI..."

Jon (Illinois)

In a H2H Keeper would you give up any of these players to acquire Hosmer--Lawrie, Panda, OR Freese? Thx

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:29 PM)

I'd give up Freese. Still like Hosmer longterm more than him...

kevin Helton (fresno)

i agree with the draft day rant got to get a top qb... would you keep gronk in the 14th or foster in the 2nd or lynch in the 6th

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:30 PM)

Gronk. By far the most value...

Joe (FL)

I'm in tears about Tulo news. Since he's out for 8 weeks, should I drop him? And who are some good replacements?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:32 PM)

We discussed on the pod. There's no one really out there. Maybe Everth Cabrera or Ryan Theriot? Cliff Pennington has been playing better recently. It's ugly at SS, though. If you can hold on, I would...

Jeffrey Lieber (Los Angeles)

Do you miss our fantasy football league... even a little?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:35 PM)

Ha! Co-creator of Lost in the house, gang. I miss some of the guys in that league (including you) but nah, not really. I was in too many leagues as is back then, I was going through a divorce, I was trying to launch the TMR site / negotiate with ESPN and still do my Hollywood job - just a tough two years...never got a chance to really get into that league.

Mark (DM - Iowa)

Multi Sport League... give Longoria... get back D. Sproles.... 12 team - Dynasty with bball 5x5 - football ppr

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:36 PM)

That's a rare question. Would not do that deal. Since it's a dynasty.. baseball players have much longer shelf life than football RB's, in general.

Tom (Beaver Falls)

Need Stolen bases in OF, available on waiver wire Crisp, Schaeffer, Maybein. Who do you like?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:37 PM)

Maybin..

Andrew (Chicago)

With Marshall in Chicago now, do you think any other Bear's receivers have any fantasy relevance?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:38 PM)

Not that you could count on to start consistently in a 10 or 12 tm league....

Eric (Cleveland)

Did you enjoy how Lebron's leg hurt in between plays but when he had the ball he was able to make a layup without crying?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:39 PM)

Gonna be really tough to watch him hoist a trophy tonight. Or this weekend.... Amazing player. Can't root for him on any level.

John (Nj)

Hey Matthew do you need a intern for the summer. Would love to help. Anyway that would be possible?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:40 PM)

At the bottom of ESPN.com there is a link for careers/jobs at ESPN. Any open positions we have - including interns - are listed there. Apply there. Unfotuntely, I don't get an intern though I would love one. Thanks for asking.

George (Arizona)

best shot for a bounce back season? JCharles, Vick, Chris Johnson, D. Murray (from injury)

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:41 PM)

In order: Vick, CJ, Charles, Murray.

Dan (TX)

Which denver WR are you taking? Decker the reliable and smart Decker, or the huge and athletic D. Thomas

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:42 PM)

As of right now, I have Thomas ahead of Decker but it's close. That's something you'll really want to watch in pre-season.

Scott (Seattle)

How many of the top 20 picks should be QBs in a 2 QB league? I'm thinking Rivers is 2nd round material with this setup.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:43 PM)

Rivers is close. In that format, definitely top 6 and possibly three more, should be gone by end of 2nd / top of 3rd.

Jake (Ohio)

TMR when are you and the weasel going to start regular Fantasy Football podcasts? Can't wait...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:43 PM)

Just talked with him a little while ago... probably next week we'll do one

Marty (California)

So I just read the manifesto and I noticed that you don't address the possibility of using a tight end in your flex position. Since they're so consistent, is it worth drafting another tight end as a possible flex, and if so who?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:44 PM)

Yes, depending on who you get. Only one of the top five guys.

Justin (Kentucky)

How many people download the baseball podcast on average for a given day? What are the numbers for the football podcast?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:47 PM)

We don't share those numbers publically, but suffice it say many more than actually should.

Pinto (Nyc)

Sale -- ride him or flip him in h2h leagues with month-long playoffs in September?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

Always depends on who you can get, but in general, I'm a believer. I'd ride him.

Alex (Chicago)

What are your thoughts on Brandon Marshall for this year? He was pretty good with Cutler back when.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:48 PM)

Monster year coming.

Timmy Betancourt (Charleston)

Is RA Dickey a sell high if you sell him very high??

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:50 PM)

How high is really high? Has a k/9 of over 9 and inducing GB over 53% of the time. Only other pitcher with a k/9 over 9 and GB% of 53% or better? Zack Greinke. Since start of LAST YEAR, more Quality Starts than Kershaw, Cliff Lee, Hamels, Sabathia....totally legit.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:51 PM)

About to tweet. A's just called up C Derek Norris. AL only play...

Trevis (Vegas)

Cam Newton, should I be confident in a solid season or do I need a quality #2 QB just in case?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:52 PM)

Feel he has better passing numbers, fewer rushing TD's, and is very good, but not as good as last year. I'd feel confident.

Will (The OC)

Any chance you would do the "How Did This Get Made" podcast on Crocodile Dundee in LA? Or are you saving those tales for the book?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:53 PM)

Ha! Paul Scheer and I actually talked about doing it when I did The League.... We've traded emails a few times about it - timing hasn't worked out yet. I'll do that at some point - definitely will happen.

Joe (St. Louis)

Going with your elite QB/TE theme, is the 15th pick too early to grab Graham, knowing he wont be there the next round? Over guys like Mathews or Roddy White?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:55 PM)

Not too early and no issue there. Don't believe Mathews will be there at 15 and I'm fine with taking him over Roddy. Very possible Julio has the better year at WR this season and after you do some mock drafts you'll see... WR is CRAZY DEEP this year.

Perry (New York)

Are you buying brandon moss?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:57 PM)

At some point, you sort of have to, right? Don't like the fact that he's older and we haven't really seen this before BUT he was hitting for power in minors before coming up and it's not like he has a lot of competition for PT. So for now, yes, I believe in the power...

Mike (CA)

You the man, Berry, but there's one part of your manifesto that hit my biggest pet peeve. Saying, "No one saw..." The world's big. Someone somewhere saw everything coming and when you do, that phrase makes you mad. You say no one saw Cam Newton coming, he was the #1 pick in the draft. Say "almost no one" or don't say it at all. It hurts your credibilty. You're cool, though.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:58 PM)

So weird. My biggest pet peeve is someone nitpicking on a turn of phrase in a 10,000 word article. Find me someone who predicted 18 touchdowns for Gronk or Cam Newton being a top five fantasy player overall and I will totally take it back.

Dave (WI)

What do you think of Jermichael finley as your stud TE?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (3:59 PM)

Makes sense in theory - physical talent, great offense... but seems to disappear from the offense at times, very inconsistent, hasn't really put it all together yet... he probably won't be on any of my teams.

Shawn (MO)

Just read that Ellsbury could be in the starting lineup by next weekend......is that possible and should I target him in a trade if possible?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:00 PM)

Yes and yes

Dan (OC via NJ)

Colby Rasmus Legit? btw thanks for the Dickey pick up before everyone

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:01 PM)

Welcome. And yes, we discussed Rasmus earlier this week. Underlying numbers suggest he's not getting lucky - this is legit. Remember, he's just 25

Dave (WI)

how can matty's dating advice corner go on without Beadle, who could possible replace her?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:01 PM)

Excellent question. Definitely miss Beadle. But we did it before without her... Just did one with Vanilla Ice... think I may try to rotate "celebs" in and out of it.

Mark (Alaska)

Does your baseball strategy of "proven player off a bad year" apply to football too? I.E. Chris Johnson.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

Yes, but not in the case of CJ. Among the ideas of that are that a PPOBY will be gotten at a significant discount on drarft day (ie Adam Dunn in baseball)... The problem is CJ isn't going at a discount at all. He's still a first round pick in most mocks I've done/seen....

Alan (Louisiana)

06010 question! You said out of Crisp, Schafer and Maybin you would take Maybin. What about Maybin, Campana or Revere? You are very high on Campana on the podcast!

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:04 PM)

Yeah, I'd take Campana if it was ONLY about speed.

Steve (Colbert)

Is there a fantasy football magazine that you would recommend getting over any other? There are so many to choose from.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:07 PM)

Yes. It's called The internet.Honestly, I don't love magazines because they have to be written well in advance, are out fo date, etc.... ESPN is doing one this year, however, so that'll be my recomendation. In fact, I'm writing a 6 page article for the Mag that I'm writing right now - it's why there is no baseball column this week.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Do you think Harvin gets traded? If he lands in Denver he'd be a top 10 WR...

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:08 PM)

Never say never but no

Chris (Cincy)

I lost Tulo too. Would you keep Plouffe there or trade Jennings and Darvish for Jose Reyes?

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:09 PM)

Keep Plouffe AND do that deal.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Put in order of keeper-ness...Rice, Forte, Graham, Nicks, Roddy...12 team PPR league..thank you

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:10 PM)

Rice, Graham, Forte (worried about hold out), Roddy, Nicks.

Matthew Berry - The Talented Mr. Roto
  (4:11 PM)

Ok gang - that's all I have time for. Thanks for dropping by! Good luck this week - I'll try to answer more on twitter (www.twitter.com/matthewberrytmr) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/matthewjberry)
