Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

WHEW! I missed you guys/girls. Ready for a fast hour?! Me too!

Ken (MD)

I'm going to the AT&T National on Friday. I've seen Tiger play before in person, so I don't plan to stick with him too much. Any other players you know of that would be fun to follow for a few holes? Thanks!

Michael Collins
  (3:02 PM)

Gotta follow Garrigus. Gotta follow Mahan. Then watch Perez and Piercy, cause if they have a couple bad holes you'll get to hear some language and see some fireworks!

Alex (Anaheim)

Who's the best pro you've ever seen at escaping sand traps?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

In person... Daniel Chopra, I used to call him Houdini.

bennett (tallahassee)

who is your pick to win the at&t national

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

Tiger

Paul (Portland, OR)

WOO-HOO! I broke 100 for the first time yesterday! Sorry to shout. The frightening thing is, I shot so well on the front 9, I could have broke 90, but my psyche reminded myself that I don't normally play that well, and I stumbled all over the back 9. Funny how the mind works in sports...

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

CONGRATS!!!! The trick is... don't add up your score after nine holes. My best friend broke 90 two weeks after breaking 100 because of this tip from a pro I got a LONG time ago. I still don't.

Mike (Great White North)

Love your work, Michael! Hey, how nervous do touring pros get during their round. I know being in contention is one thing, but do some of the guys get jumpy, like amatuers, for certain shots/conditions, etc?? I know I DO!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

Thanks Mike. Yeah, some pros get nervous grinding to make the cut. I had one pro that was nervous on a Friday cause he was trying to make his 150th cut, took him three tries cause he couldn't stop thinking about it.

Jeff (Queens)

Can you please list your five best golfers ever not including guys that played before the era of Snead, Hogan and Nelson?

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Nicklaus, Tiger, Hogan, Player, Palmer, Snead

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Maybe switch out Palmer for Nelson and put Palmer after Snead

John (Charlottesville, VA)

Temperatures are supposed to hover around 100 F for much of the tournament. To what extent will the heat play a factor this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

Big time if temps hang there. It's not a "hard" course walk but it ain't easy either. Guys are gonna have to take electrolytes and stay hydrated. The first sign of dehydration for a golfer is bad decision making so if player and caddie are dry they'll miss the cut.

Todd (Wichita)

Have you seen the video of the streaker in Wichita yet, Gore's quote was "now it is a real tournament"

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

Nah, I just got the note on twitter right before I started the chat so I'll check it out when we're done

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

Hey Andrew from Chatanooga, now I'm not gonna answer you just outta spite.

JR (Chicago)

I love Olympic as a U.S. Open course and think the USGA should have one there every 10 years, not every 14. However, the only real complaint that I have from the entire week was the pin position on 18 on Sunday. If they put that thing in the back left, the ending (from Harrington to Thompson to McDowell and Furyk) would have been way more entertaining.

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

That course was SO awesome. I loved everything about it, even the Sunday pin position. But I see what you're saying.

Kent (Indianapolis)

Buddy just checked Pebble off his bucket list. If you had only one more round to play, where would it be?

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

Don't know. Honestly. There are so many places I wanna play and haven't yet.

Shoshana (Boston)

(note my list of most important golfers would be diff than list of best, and would certainly include palmer and player)

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

send your list again... sorry

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

that's 140 times you've sent it and it's still coming. C'mon man. I don't wanna have to block your computer. You've been here before. Etiquette, show some

Nate (Los Angeles)

Who do you think the next break out star is on the European Tour? I know, strange question, but I enjoy watching it Saturday and Sunday mornings. I saw either Colsaerts or Oleson.

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Got to see Nicholas Colsaerts game up close at Olympic, the guy is solid. I still don't see the next "one" yet though.

Shoshana (Boston)

I was saying I could make a case for Phil over Palmer and certainly Player

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

Phil over Pamler maybe but Player has all four major trophies. No chance Phil's better

Liam (Huddersfield UK)

I know Tiger swaps a five wood and a two iron, do you know if he has ever tried a hybrid?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

he talked about messing with one for a little bit and his 2/3 iron is a driving iron with a thick back, but I'vve never seen him use one in competition

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

He can play that course without ever hitting driver and that may be his best option.

Nate (Los Angeles)

Michael, I'm a 5 handicapper and I swear I could finish par-bogey or bogey-par on those last two holes when I know that I have a two shot lead. Hit an anti-right shot on 17 (who cares what club, either) and then at least get your putt to the hole on 18. I love Hoffman but geeeshh!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:24 PM)

His wife tweeted me today. I said, "I've been on vacation. What I miss?" She said, "Heartbreak."Nuff said.

Tim (SF)

I sure didnt think -14 was gonna be good'nuff yesterday. Leishman put 62 on it, but with CHoff getting to -16 with 5 to go, I kinda feel like it was a gift. Question is, as it was Leishman's first victory, are we the fans the only one's that care when a player backs into a victory....do the player's ever feel that way? or is a W a W no matter how you get it?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

First one... you don't care. Easier when you back in but a 62 is a 62 on Sunday no matter what. For the fans it's disappointing, for the player it is like getting a gift but that also means you kept your head down while everyone else blew themselves up.

TyWebb (Caddyshack at Bushwood)

What holes are the toughest this week at the AT&T? any pivotal holes to note?

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

check out my "Holes to Watch" video blog. It'll be posted tomorrow

Eddie (Philly)

I'm headed to Bethesda this Sunday for my first-ever PGA event. Any spectator tips?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

hang out at 16! especially on Sunday

Shoshana (Boston)

Olympic seemed like a fun course, but it didn't seem to really reward ball striking, as much as scrambling bc nobody could hit a bunch of fairways or greens

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

US Opens are all like that, either impossible to hit fairways or green that won't hold a shot from the fairways

Anonymous (Charlotte, NC)

Realistically, how many times do you think Tiger will win this golf season. I really think you are the bomb, Michael!

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

I predicted 4 earlier this year and I'm still comfy with that.

Ed (Long Island)

Now with Westwood coming stateside next year, is that a big blow for the European Tourn now that Westwood, McIlroy and Donald all will be based here?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Nah, cause they're all still gonna do time over there. It was Donald winning both money titles living here that set them up to know it could be done. He should get alot more credit for that feat than he's getting

Andrew (Chattanooga )

Where can Tiger have a better chance at winning PGA CHamp or Brit open

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Both the same, they're both gonna be decided by wind and then your tee times Thursday and Friday

Tim (SF)

Gotta put this one in print too...Was Rick Reilly standing on a step ladder on the roof of O-Club for your wrap-up piece? or were you on your knees? ;-)

Tim (SF)

Another "access" question for you. While I was working the USOpen, we saw they had all the Tour vans there of course, grinding, tweaking, whatevering the players wanted...you ever get to head into the Tour van and have them customize a set of Collins' grinds for you? or get yourself a new R11s driver maybe?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

haven't got irons... but I've had some clubs made for me by some very good friends. And Reilly and I were BOTH standing on boxes if you can believe that!!

Tom (L.A.)

Going back to Furyk on 16 on Sunday and his comment that you can't prepare for moving up 100 yds - I understand and I don't at the same time. What would your advice have been? Seems to me if he would have been more comfortable hitting driver, he still should have hit it.

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

And even at 580 it was a three shot hole for him. So, on one hand no you can't practice for that, but on the other hand, you never played a 580 dogleg left par five before? C'MON MAN

Shoshana (Boston)

Tiger prob doesn't need to hit driver all that often at Lytham, but he's actually been hitting it well when he chooses to pull it. Can't really work around the wedge/chipping issues though. Hard to make a lot of birdies, or save par when you're constantly looking at 30ft putts

Andrew (WI)

After seeing Bubba adopt a kid and get him the week of the Masters, and Webb skipping the British for his kid....apparently the secret to winning majors is timing your wife's pregnancy. Pro tip to golfers: We're 9 months out from the 2013 Masters in 2 weeks.

Michael Collins
  (3:39 PM)

I did a video today about Webb skipping the British Open. Why do y'all think Bubba got killed for taking time off after Zurich and no one is saying anything about Webb skipping the British?

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey Michael, My daughter and I love your work! She is a big Rickie fan for obvious reasons and I am a Bubba fan. Good to see Bubba back in contention again. I thought he was done for the year with being on cloud nine after the baby and the green jacket. And rightfully so! Your thoughts on Bubba for the rest of the year?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

I expect at least one more win from Bubba by years end and I think he may contend at the PGA Champ or Tour Champ. And thank you

Andrew (WI)

Gotta give you props, I expected you to withdraw from this chat in the first round due to exhaustion from vacationing. Kudos for vacationing properly.

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

NICE!! I am exhausted after my vacation but I owe it to the sponsors... hahaha

Paul Peach (Solsberry, IN)

Any truth to the rumor that Jim Furyk mistakenly took 4-Hour Energy prior to the final round of the US Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

funny

Geoff (DC)

Does Westwood win the US Open if not for the tree?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

don't know for sure if he would've won but I bet he'd have been there going into 17th.

Justin (Indianapolis)

Will Marc Leishman be a one-hot wonder or do you see mulitple wins in his career (or even this season)?

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

I think he get a few more wins in his career, but getting more than one a year... don't see that

Nate (Los Angeles)

Best course in Los Angeles, Riviera or LACC north? And will either host a U.S. Open in the next 25 years?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

Riviera, but it just doesn't have the infrastructure to hold a major anymore.

El Bori (Tampa, FL)

Duane Ford says that Tiger Woods gave the field a Golf Lesson over the weekend at Olympic.....

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

Golf lesson on how to what?

Andrew (Chattanooga )

Whos your favorite golfer to watch?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

Bubba, Tiger, Phil, Garrigus. Then Luke Donald

AwesomeSauce10 (Seattle, WA)

Michael.. have you ever looked at or played Chambers Bay in WA? Thoughts on 2015 Open being there?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

Never been but the pictures look amazing and friends that have been out that way say the area is very pretty

Shoshana (Boston)

There are 14 Americans right now in the owgr top 25, none name Furyk (who I think makes the team) vs 8 Europeans. Not that it will be easy, but got to think DL3 is a happy captain right now

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

Gotta be careful of overconfidence this early though

Tim (SF)

Paddy Harrington is rounding into form...could be a (not-so) sneaky pick at the Open Championship no? It's good to see him playing well again.

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Just haven't seen him close. And he's had some horrific weekends too.

Bob (Boston, MA)

Bubba is not playing again until the British Open. It seems that he really does not take golf that seriously. Play 3 tourneys and take 10 weeks off between the Masters and British. Thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

I honestly don't have a problem with it. I didn't when Tiger did it so I'd be a hypocrite to chastise Bubba for it.

Greg (Nashville)

I have loved the west coast US Open's the last few years. Aside from Pebble, Olympic and Torrey, are there any courses in the Pacific or even Mountain time zones that could host an Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Too many to name

Ken (Moseley, VA)

Michael...will you be at Congressional? Best way to get around for the day and see lots of good action? What do you think about Mahan, Moore, Reavie, Cantlay for fantasy this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:57 PM)

I won't be there this week. Been there many times though. Hang by two green, you can see a bunch of stuff close by.

Kenneth (Huntsville, AL)

Speaking of Bubba's schedule, what is the minimum events to keep his card? I don't have a problem at all with what he is doing. One of the perks of the job, but is he going to have to play every week this fall?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

15 to stay a Tour member. And he's already got 12 starts. See how spoiled we are?! haha

Shoshana (Boston)

To Eddie: Bring lots of water and sun tun lotion!

Chad (Dayton, OH)

Michael, it seems that almost every week on tour, at least a few of the big guns show up, unlike in the past where you had all the big names skipping a ton of tournaments. Do you think this is a product of the fact that there is so much depth on tour? Or is it more that there really is a push to play a variety of so-called "lesser tournaments" like Hartford, the Honda, etc.?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

It's depth and some of the big names like different styles of courses. So we see great golf all over all year. It's great if you are really into the game

Nick (Washington DC)

Michael whats your favorite post round meal?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Chipotle

Andrew (Chattanooga )

What golf tournament is the best to attend (lets say money isnt an issue)?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

The Masters

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

Man that was quick!! As usual. But it's ok... Same bat time, same bat channel next Monday!ESPNCaddie@gmail.com@ESPNCaddie on twitterPlay well this week!
