Chat with Dan Graziano

Dan Graziano
  (12:00 PM)

Hello, and welcome to the chat. I am your host, Dan. Please ask your questions.

Marques (Los Angeles) [via mobile]

Hey Dan love the work you do on the blog. Do you think the Eagles will make a late dip into free agency and grab a wide receiver like Plaxico Burress?

Dan Graziano
  (12:01 PM)

I haven't heard anything to indicate that, Marques, but it remains possible, and that's a place he's said he'd like to play. There's no rush on Plaxico, because there appears to be no demand for his services. So if he's someone they like, perhaps they're waiting to evaluate the guys on their own roster first before deciding whether to take a shot.

D-waz (Valdosta, GA)

As you say the Giants are a meritocracy... and in your comments on Wilson and Randle, you discuss how they may be behind other candidates. But that didn't stop Victor Cruz from overtaking those others as those in front faltered and/or got injured. I don't think either will set the world afire like Cruz. But don't you think they can match what the Giants' lost, either singly or with those around them?

Dan Graziano
  (12:03 PM)

Cruz's case actually proves my point. He clearly outplayed Barden and Jernigan and even Manningham to secure his starting job. As for whether the Giants can make up for what they lost with their rookies/unproven guys at RB and WR, sure they CAN. But until we see them do it, it remains a question mark, not a certainty.

Stephane (Philly)

Doesn't it seem to you that the Eagles are overvalued again coming into the season? They've got the second-highest odds to win the NFC according to Vegas. I watched this team every game last year. I don't see it. What am I missing?

Dan Graziano
  (12:05 PM)

Well, yes. They do look the best on paper, again. And it's more or less the same group that flopped in spite of that last year. But I think the sense is that (a) many of their losses were very close and (b) there's reason to think they'll play better this year, given all of the changes they made last year and the likelihood that everyone's more comfortable now. But yes, your point is well taken. Last year's disappointment must factor into predictions regarding the Eagles. It's possible the group just doesn't have what it takes.

TimVB (Arlington, VA)

Do you see any of the Redskin's receivers being viable fantasy starters?

Dan Graziano
  (12:06 PM)

Absolutely. Garcon and Moss should be on rosters, for sure. And if you count Fred Davis, he should be among the top fantasy TEs.

alex,new york [via mobile]

I know you'll feel like saying..who cares...but isn't eli totally underrated???I mean brees and rodgers thrive in their respective systems...but besides brady isn't eli the only other real clutch quarterback in the nfl right now? And not only that...if u take every aspect of the game into account...who is better??

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

No, the guys you'd take ahead of him from a tools/numbers standpoint are guys like Stafford and Rivers and maybe Romo, but you're right. None of those guys has demonstrated Eli's ability to win the huge games, over and over again. So yeah, you'd take him. I think his brother's the answer to your question, though, about who's better other than Brady, Rodgers and Brees.

Dan (Washington, DC)

Dear God. What the hell is with Giants fans and their "Giants are so disrespected!" Eli is so underrated!" Seriously. Grow up!

Dan Graziano
  (12:08 PM)

Sorry. Posted that by accident. (Or did I?)

Chris (Miami)

Hey Dan just curious, how many questions do you get per minute? And do you actually read all the questions or do you skip some?

Dan Graziano
  (12:09 PM)

Can't read them all. I skim. Per-minute average varies by time of year. This time of year is very slow. Yours is No. 81. So, what? 8.1 per minute so far?

Lou (Irving, TX)

Do you think that the Giants would ever run a defensive scheme with 5 down lineman for even more pressure on the QB with the talent they have in the defensive line?

Dan Graziano
  (12:09 PM)

Yes, I think this is something Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin have envisioned in their dreams.

Charle (Waterloo)

Like you said there is not a line in front of Plaxico's door but doesn't a big outside receiver (Austin to slot) make sense for Dallas? Especially because of the trouble they have had gettinig it in the end zone from point blank.

Dan Graziano
  (12:10 PM)

Plax in Dallas would shock me. They're trying to stay away from potential problem cases.

Asher (McLean)

Do you think the NFC East is the toughest division anymore? If not what division?

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

So cyclical. The AFC North had three playoff teams last year. The NFC South had three 10-win teams two years ago. Round and round it goes.

Demetrius (Landover, Md)

Saying as though we haven't heard much from/or about Roy Helu's progression so far this offseason. when you were at Redskins camp a couple of weeks ago how did youthink he looked in positional drills, though I know he was held out of full team drills? And do you think he would be a late round steal on some fantasy teams?

Dan Graziano
  (12:11 PM)

Yeah, Helu belongs on your fantasy bench, in case he emerges as a regular starter sometime during the season and you can trade him after his first big game.

Jay (Philly)

Who are you taking above Shady? MJD? Arian? RayRiceoftheRavensfromRutgers? All of them?

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

I think Foster and Rice are the only ones who I'd take ahead of McCoy, and I don't know that I wouldn't take McCoy first. That seems to be this year's clear top three.

Erik (Illinois)

10 minutes in. First Cowboys question answered? Whats going on? I mean this is "America's Team" we're talking about!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:12 PM)

Can only take the questions I get, Erik.

Hodor (Winterfell)

Hodor.

Chris (Miami)

Most reliable fantasy QB in the NFC east for the entire season? (Including week 17, of course)

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

Reliable, the answer is Manning. Can't count on Vick and Romo to play all 16, right?

Steve (San Diego)

Hi Dan, this will be the 3rd year in the 3-4 defense but the secondary might be weaker. Do you think the Redskins defense will be better or worse than last year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

I think they take a step back on defense. Secondary is a major concern.

Jeff (NJ)

So Nicks says that he will be good to go for training camp. Do you think he is pushing it a bit? I really hope he doesn't push himself too hard an get hurt again closer to the season.

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

It sounds as though he's pushing it, and I don't know why he would. The team will pull back on the reins, though.

Mark (Oregon)

How will the Skins secondary be weaker this year? the only guys they lost are guys that didn't play...

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Didn't say weaker. Said "major concern."

DLloyd (NoVA)

Ok, off topic, but hold on just a minute on MJD. He's incredibly consistent and was the only bright spot on the Jaguars, ending the season at the top of the yards heap by quite a bit. He's now got Blackmon and Robinson to keep some defenders away from him, and yet he's not in your top 3? How?

Dan Graziano
  (12:17 PM)

Well, because I like those other three guys better. If I had the fourth pick, I'd feel fine about taking MJD. But holdout concerns, wear and tear, etc. Somebody's got to be fourth in that group.

Luigi (Brooklyn)

With the loss of Jason Peters, how do you think that will effect the Eagles running game?

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

Significantly. 20 touchdowns again for McCoy would be a surprise, given what I believe was Peters' contribution to the 2011 cause. McCoy's still great enough on his own to put up numbers, but things will have to chance in terms of scheme. They ran to Peters' side a lot last year.

steve (australia)

Who in the East will have the best fantasy defense this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

Did you know that not one NFC East team returned a punt or a kick for a touchdown last year? That affects the value of the fantasy D/STs in the division. But I think the answer to your question is Eagles, by a nose over the Giants.

Mark (Oregon)

Why the comment then that they Skins would take a step back. They gain Jarvis on the D-line, another year of experience for the young LBs, and can potentially upgrade at safety. I'm not saying they've solved their problems in the secondary, but it seems like they should be at least the same, if not better this year...

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

I am familiar with Washington's roster. What do you want me to say? I think that, unless they get to the QB, they're going to be easy to throw on.

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

One man's opinion.

Mark (Bellefonte, PA)

If not one team returned a punt or kick for a touchdown, then that doesn't affect their relative value to each other.

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Touche

Brian (48th and Madison)

With Wilson are the giants able to run an offense similar to the saints with Darren sproles or do they lack the TE to make it possible

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

Well, they obviously don't have anything at TE that's close to what the Saints have. But almost no one does. As for the Wilson-Sproles comparison... sheesh. Can we see the kid play first? Sproles has been a productive NFL back for years. That's a pretty difficult thing to become, even for a first-round pick.

Stephane (Philly)

I think that Andy Reid has far too much power in the Eagles' organization, especially for a coach who hasn't been able to win big games and for someone who has made some puzzling personnel decisions in the past. Agree?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

By and large, no, I do not agree with my readers on Andy Reid. The team is good every year. The team is in contention every year. The team is in the playoffs almost every year. There are a lot of fan bases that would happily trade you their problems.

Sagar (NYC)

Who has the best recieving corps in the division? Bryant/Austin/Witten , Nicks/Cruz/Bennett, Jackson/Maclin/Celek, Moss/Garcon/Lewis?

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

When you include the tight ends, the Cowboys come out ahead.

Nick (Vermont)

Do you think the scheme that was run in Chicago didn't suit Meriweather as well as the one in DC will?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

That is what Mike Shanahan believes. He knows more about it than I do. I think Meriweather is an OK player and will play OK. They can't use him as a deep-coverage center fielder type.

Michael (Mt. Airy, MD)

Do you think people will be making too much of the RG3 vs. Luck preseason game when it happens?

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

Yes.

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

But I may be one of those people!

Hanson (DC)

Garcon had a large amount of his catches in the 4th quarter.Clutch or just garbage time stats?

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

Hard to call it "clutch," since the Colts weren't competitive in most of their games. I don't know on Garcon. I think he has the talent to be a No. 1. And he's young enough to grow and develop with Griffin. In theory, he's a good guy for them to have signed. Now, we need to see what he is in reality.

Asher (McLean)

Whats up with RG3's contract?

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

I donno.

Josh (Louisville)

Garcon is overrated. Manning made him look good.

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Actually, he had his best year with Painter and Orlovsky and that crew chucking it to him, so...

Jauncen (Jauncenville)

True or False: Atogwe will supplant Coleman as starter at some point this season.

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Gonna say false. But Jarrett might.

Steve (New York)

Joe Horn? Are you kiidding me?!!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

Huh?

Nick (Vermont)

Do you think Raheem Morris is the Redskins' DC in 2013?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

No.

Will (Fort Myers)

How much flack have you gotten over the June predictions?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

Hahahahahahaha

Corey (Philadelphia)

Garcon spent his time in Indy catching "perfect" passes and usually not against the other teams top CB(s). Do you think its likely that he regresses when teams put their top talent on him and his QB is no longer throwing indefensible passes?

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

Again, I just must have missed all the perfect, indefensible passes Curtis Painter was throwing last year. Gotta go back and watch more film...

Stephane (Philly)

The NFL is a "what have you done for me lately?" league, and Reid hasn't won a playoff game since 2008

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

And before last year, neither had Tom Coughlin or Eli Manning. Look, I can't make people think the way I do, and that's not my goal. But you come here asking for my opinion, and I offer it. I think fans are, by their nature, irrational about their teams. And I think Eagles fans are irrational about Andy Reid.

Derek (Austin)

Realistically, what do you think Fred Davis' season could look like? He was on pace for 1,000 yds REC last yr. More value with RGIII ?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

No, I think about the same, but that value is very high. He's legit.

MIKE (DELAWARE)

Do you think Vick had a hard time identifying blitz' last year and having Kelce make the calls this year will help the line and buy Vick time in the pocket?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

I think one of Vick's issues as a QB is that he doesn't read the field as well as some of the other top QBs do. And I think taking the responsibility for the protection calls away from him should help, yes, as it gives him one less thing to concentrate on.

Chris (Miami)

This is a VERY optimistic view on things but do you see Niles Paul being as good as Shannon Sharpe?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

I mean come on.

Brick (San Diego)

LOUD NOISES!!!

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

Did you use a trident?

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

I think the NFCE has the highest number of 'No. 2 WRs' that may outproduce the suposed team 'No. 1 WR'...who's most likely? Dez, DJax, Moss or Cruz?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

Dez.

Asher (McLean)

Which training camp are you most interested in attending?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

Cowboys. They have In-n-Out Burger out there.

Joe (New Jersey)

Have you ever cut a chat short because you couldn't deal with the terrible questions anymore? If not, this could be your first time...

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

This is pretty bad, isn't it?

P (NJ)

Do you think Cruz can/will maintain being a top 10 receiver this season? If so, what about Nicks? There wasn't a game last season where they BOTH posted top 10 WR quality stats, do you think that will change?

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

I think Cruz is for real, if that's your question. I think Nicks is better, and will end up being more consistent. But I think they're both high-end guys, and if one is getting more attention, the other will have the better game. This is the way they and the Giants like it. Helps that neither guy has any ego at all about how much he gets the ball.

Stephane (Philly )

This is also a dead period in the NFL, it's pretty boring so I feel like picking fights with you because you don't agree with my amateur opinion about Andy Reid.

Dan Graziano
  (12:36 PM)

No sweat. Happy to help.

MD (MD)

We can all agree that the Eagles look best on paper, but that defense outside the D-Line looked sort of lost. Wasn't there a point in which they were allowing around 5 YPC up the gut?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Oh yeah. Definitely needs to get stronger up the middle. But you see, they traded for a middle linebacker and traded up to draft a defensive tackle. They addressed their weaknesses, another reason why people are willing to give them another chance.

Ivan (Texas)

Hey I know this is out of your NFC East comfort zone but what's your opinion on the Pro Bowl? I'm ready for them to just shut that down.

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

I wouldn't miss it.

Dan Graziano Jr. (Memphis)

Do you think this is a make or break season for the Eagles, before they bust the team up, as a Giants fan i hope so.

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

Yes, I think it's an important year for a lot of people there, from a job-security standpoint. I do.

Ted (Dallas)

I think Tony Romo of today is eerily similar to Kenny Anderson (QB Cin.) of the 70's. Agree?

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

You must be older than I am.

Matthew (North Carolina)

Do you think Stephane hates Andy Reid more than you hate June predictions?

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

Not possible.

Justin (South Jersey)

Eagles fans that hate Andy Reid should put themselves in Redskins fans shoes. Then rethink about about having a coach that always gives your team a chance to win. Would they rather have 10 Different guys like skins did?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

Submitted without comment.

Ted (Dallas)

Dude, I'm 36.

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

That's not older than me. Regardless, Kenny Anderson is out of my comfort zone in terms of historical comparisons.

Scott (Giant's Country)

Who does Osi play for next year, assuming he stays healthy?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

Anyone he wants to play for, if he stays healthy.

Asher (McLean)

Which NFC EAST coach is in the hot seat?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

The redhead in green.

Chris (Miami)

MLB question, Where do you stand on HOFers using PED's?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

As a baseball Hall of Fame voter, I have declined to vote for eligible players I believe (or even strongly suspect) to have used them. That's me and my one vote.

Josh (Louisville)

Redhead = Jason Garret?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

Does he wear green?

Nick (Vermont)

NFL question, What did you think of Eli Manning's Top 100 ranking?

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

I didn't spend much time thinking about it.

Hog.Brew (Austin)

Chris Neild

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Is this that game where now I have to say a Redskins player whose first name begins with "N?" Niles Paul.

Charle (Waterloo)

Why isn't JG on the Hot Seat in Dallas... My niece yelled "what are you doing?" at the TV last year when he froze Bailey against the Cardinals.

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

Well, the snappy answer is "because your niece isn't the owner of the Cowboys." The man who is really likes Garrett and wants to give him a chance to be great at the job. That includes lots of time and patience.

John (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

I see your Niles Paul and raise you Pierre Garcon

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

Looks like you win.

Roger Goodell (Overlooking my Minions)

The more I make a mess of everything, am I shortening my tenure as Commish?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

The more money you make for your 32 employers, the longer that tenure gets.

Dan (Boring, MD)

Are you going to be stopping by tailgates again this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

I tried that, but it didn't work. Problem is, you guys know what I look like and I don't know what you look like, and when I went out there, no one came up and said hi. (Okay, one person did in Washington.) So if we do that again, it's kind of on you guys to let me know when I've found you.

William (Queens!)

Hey Dan, I was curious about Nicks wanting to return so soon from the injury when he clearly isn't fighting for a job...YET. Do you think it has to do with his contract coming up in a year, and him trying to fight the "injury-prone" label? Or maybe Cruz's upcoming payday is weighing on him after the year he had?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

It could be the injury-prone thing, yeah. I'm sure he doesn't want to risk missing any games. My thing is, I think rushing back is the surer way to bring that risk into play.

Stephane (Philly )

Do you know where you're going Week 1 yet?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

Well, I know I'll be here for Cowboys-Giants on that Wednesday night. That Sunday, it's either Eagles in Cleveland or Redskins in New Orleans. I know which one I'd pick if it were totally up to me...

Ian (Atl, Ga)

So you have a baseball HOF vote. Do you currently cover baseball as well as NFC East? Any current chats, blogs for baseball?? Or is your vote still current from a time you covered baseball in the past?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

It's that last thing you said. I have been strictly NFC East since May of 2011.

Erik (IL)

It's not totally up to you where you go?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

No. It's a communal effort. I have editors and we talk about the best way to make sure we get to where we need to be and get as many games staffed as possible. As I've explained many times, my role on Sunday when I go to games is as part of ESPN.com's Sunday game coverage. I use the access that grants me for blog content, but it's not as simple as me deciding where I want to go and going. Not my money, after all.

Mike S (Ocean CIty, MD)

My guess is that you will want to go to New Orleans to see the start of RGII career.

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

You may be psychic. Of course, I imagine we'll have lots and lots of people there. Saints have been just a teensy bit of an offseason story, ya know...

Nick (Vermont)

Can you end the chat today with a Ron Burgundy type sign off?

Dan Graziano
  (12:51 PM)

Heh heh. That could go either way, couldn't it?

Ray Finkle (Miami)

Does Desean Jackson have a year were he is a significant factor again, now that his contract situation is settled, or have teams figured out how to take him out of games? He is nasty when he has the ball in his hands, but getting it there is the issue.

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

I think he is what he is. He's not going to catch 75, 80 balls. He's going to break some big plays. He's going to be a decoy a lot of the time that holds those safeties back and forces Vick to throw underneath. I don't think there's anything coming from Jackson that we haven't already seen.

Will (Fort Myers)

I think a healthy Maclin helps DeSean out

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

I agree. I think Jackson will play better than he did last year. I just don't see him making some kind of big career jump to a traditional No. 1 wide receiver. I think he is what he is, and if he's not going to return punts anymore, he won't be as valuable in the future as he was in the past.

Please Answer my question (Schriever AFB)

I've posted a question in every chat you've had and not one answer:Who leads the Redskins in Receiving/Rushing/TD's

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

Moss/Griffin/Davis

Bo (Philly)

d jackson is ranked in the low 70's in fantasy draft board. is he a viable starting fantasy reciver this year

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

He's just tough in fantasy, because he can win you a week by himself or he can drop a really low number in an important spot, and you never know from week to week which it'll be. I tend to stay away.

Adam (Ridgefield, NJ)

Dan -- You need a WR on your fantasy team and can choose between Maclin and Dez. Who do you draft?

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

TOUGH call!!! A year ago, Maclin was the easy answer. I think I'd still go with Maclin.

Sean (Az)

what?!?!? griffin leads the redskins in rushing. that sounds kind of crazy unless you think that running back by committee is going to rule all year in DC

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

That was my thinking, yes.

Deon Grant (Splooz York City)

This chat is moving too fast....OW MY KNEE. THE PAIN!!!...*looks around*...whew. Now that things are more my speed, if you had to pick a team that "improved" the most this offseason, who is it?

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

In this division? Washington.

Matt (Washington Township, NJ)

Are there any teams you specifically stay away from when drafting your fantasy team?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

No. That's foolish. I like playing in leagues where people have such irrational biases. Makes them easy to take advantage of in trades.

Hanson (DC)

Worst uniforms in the division? Eagles in a landslide.

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

Yeah, probly. Depends where you come down on the cultural appropriateness of the Redskins' unis, I guess.

Matthew (DC)

Still, even with running by committee, aren't you expecting the rushing attempts per game by the running backs to increase next season?

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Maybe. I don't know. Who's your pick to lead the Redskins in rush yards?

Mike (New Lisbon)

Eagles n Texans in superbowl, your thoughts not a prediction.

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

You will see people pick that, yes. Both will be among the favorites when prediction time rolls around, I believe.

Chris (Miami)

Hightower if healthy, if not, then Helu

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

I agree. But Hightower isn't healthy, and they don't like Helu as a full-time guy. So I said Griffin. I thought it'd be thought-provoking.

Adam (Ridgefield, NJ)

"No. That's foolish...." Really? I disagree. You're feeling pretty good if you spend a mid draft pick a Redskin's RB?

Dan Graziano
  (1:02 PM)

But that wasn't the question. The question was whether there is a specific team or teams whose players I would never draft.

Derek (Austin)

How is the Giants defense rated so low for fantasy, with such dynamic playmakers? I feel like they could be a sneaky play this yr.

Dan Graziano
  (1:03 PM)

Only five NFL teams gave up more yards in 2011. Yeah, you go for sacks and turnovers when drafting a fantasy defense, but one that gives up 376 yards per game isn't going to be one of the elites.

Jevon (McIntosh)

Should the Redskins just go get a Vet RB right now?

Dan Graziano
  (1:04 PM)

Now? No. Everyone's on vacation.

Nick (Vermont)

Can you do an interview with Ryan Kerrigan next time you're in Ashburn?

Dan Graziano
  (1:04 PM)

Done.

Sean (Az)

what do you think Dan, plus or minus 4,000 yards passing for griffin this year?

Dan Graziano
  (1:04 PM)

Stop it.

Sonny (Other side of the tracks)

What have you heard or what do you think about possible Giants sleeper Ramses Barden ? What went wrong with him, I know he had injuries, but even when healthy he didn't play, and he's had good practises. Whats the deal with him, and what do you see happening with him ?

Dan Graziano
  (1:05 PM)

Hasn't been healthy. Showed some things last year in the New England game. They like his talent, need to see it translate on the field. He'll get his shot.

Nick (Vermont)

Thank You.

Dan Graziano
  (1:05 PM)

Not sure what this is in reference to, but you're welcome. See you all tomorrow in the VIDEO MAILBAG CHAT!!!
