Chat with Farrell Evans

Farrell Evans
  (2:58 PM)

Welcome to my 3pm afternoon chat. Let's get started.

Deetz Hoffman (J Street)

FE, Where does Webb Simpson's US Open win rank among the all time flukiest? I'd have to put it in a close second behind Ogilvy in 06. Your colleague Andy North might belong up there too.

Farrell Evans
  (2:59 PM)

Andy North, a great player and an even better golf analyst, never had a single season like Webb's 2011 when he had 12 top 10s and two wins. Webb's win at Olympic was no fluke.

SenYor (Stees)

I like Webb, he seems like a good guy, but can we at least admit that his US Open win was nearly as lucky as Geoff Ogilvy in '06

Farrell Evans
  (3:01 PM)

No way. Phil lost the '06 U.S. Open. Webb played great on the weekend at Olympic.

Spencer Karney (All Charlotte Hell Night)

FE, Can we admit that Webb Simpson's win was kind of a fluke?

Farrell Evans
  (3:01 PM)

No.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

Hi Farrell! What are your feelings on Hossler and Speith receiving sponsor's exemptions into the tournament this week based on their US open play? Should those exemptions have gone to people that really have a legitimate chance to win?

Farrell Evans
  (3:02 PM)

Tyler,These kinds of publicity stunts happen all the time. These kids are simply being rewarded for the moment. Sure there were a lot of regular tour guys more deserving, but the sponsors can choose a dog to play if they want to.

Spencer Karney (All Charlotte Hell Night)

FE, what are your thoughts on Tiger getting a sponsor's exemption for Amy Balsz....I mean Beau Hossler?

Farrell Evans
  (3:03 PM)

You're funny. Beau had a good week at Olympic. He was the best story, really. So it's good to see him given an opportunity to play on the east coast in a tour event.

Spencer Karney (All Charlotte Hell Night)

FE, Who is the Player of the Year up to this point? Don't say Dufner!!!!!!

Farrell Evans
  (3:03 PM)

You know I'm going to say Dufner!

Spencer Karney (All Charlotte Hell Night)

FE, Who are your favorites at Lytham?

Farrell Evans
  (3:04 PM)

Jason Dufner, Graeme McDowell, Lee Westwood and Tiger Woods.

Spencer Karney (All Charlotte Hell Night)

FE, please give me your prediction for how many wins and majors Tiger finishes the year with. I am saying 5 wins/1 major (Open).

Farrell Evans
  (3:05 PM)

Five is a good bet. And 1 major. I know I have changed my mind on this several times this year, but he's improved with his swing and attitude sufficiently to warrant such a change in my feelings.

Frank Barlow (Atlanta)

FE, Can you describe your relevant experience that led to your hiring as an ESPN.com golf writer?

Farrell Evans
  (3:07 PM)

I played amateur and collegiate golf. I was a golf writer at Sports illustrated for nine years before coming to ESPN. Before SI, I worked at Golf World/Golf Digest publications.

Frank Barlow (Atlanta)

FE, What is your handicap right now? What is your best round?

Farrell Evans
  (3:08 PM)

I have shot a few 68s in my life, playing blue and white tees. Never on a course over 7000 yards.

Ed (Long Island)

The Irish Open has me more intrigued this week than the AT&T, between the field and venue - how about yourself?

Farrell Evans
  (3:09 PM)

Ed,I like both fields. I think it's good to see two really good fields on both sides of the pond in the same week. That's rare.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

Are there any other great country clubs in the same vicinity as Congressional that may be awarded a PGA tour stop. That's one of the richest areas in the country so I know there are some exclusive country clubs in the tri state area that are worthy.

Farrell Evans
  (3:10 PM)

The TPC at Avenel or whatever it's called now is really nice. They played the Kemper there for years.

Nemes (P-Town)

Wozniacki lost today...Rory struggling...I think the end is coming for Wozzilroy. Which one is more likely to win a major?

Farrell Evans
  (3:11 PM)

Wozzilroy got a little ahead of itself. Fame is seductive. But to your question: Rory definitely wins another major first. Wozniacki will never be a dominant player. There is nothing about her game that distinguishes her from the pack.

Nemes (P-Town)

Who is more likely to be a one-time major winner--Bubba Watson or Webb Simpson?

Farrell Evans
  (3:12 PM)

That's a hard one. I will go with Bubba because Webb has some definite mental advantages over him.

Mitch Cumstein (college roommate)

S. Tyler - in re: your question about clubs in the DC area. Check out Rock Creek Golf Club.

B (Oklahoma)

Any idea if the Senior US Open will ever come back to Hutchinson, KS at Prairie Dunes?? Or would they ever be able to hold a PGA event? thanks, love your chats.

Farrell Evans
  (3:12 PM)

Tell me about Prairie Dunes.

harrison (New York)

On The Champions Tour, how likely is it that Fred Couples will walk away with a win this week, and how well will he do at The British Open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

Couples will tell you that he is as good as anybody in the world for 36 holes. But then his back or some pain or some combination of fatigue and pain keeps him from doing much over the weekend. So he could be the first round leader at the British. Then blow up. In the Senior events, he might have 20 birdies over the first two rounds and win by 10. It all depends on his putter and desire.

Jungle Bird (The Forest)

I am going to make another appearance on the PGA Tour this season, what even do you guess Ill be at???????

Farrell Evans
  (3:15 PM)

I don't know.

Ed (Long Island)

As a professional golfer, Andy North was not a great golfer, nice golfer, only had 3 career wins but 2 happened to be the US Open. To me, we kind of overvalue winning a major, there are 4 a year, win one is probably the equivalent to winning the first or second round of the playoffs in another sport.

Farrell Evans
  (3:16 PM)

Yes, Ed, we do put perhaps too much emphasis on the majors. It's just as hard to win Quail Hollow or the Players.

Matt (Houston)

Which good, but not great, player in his late 30s or early 40s will be a great Champions Tour player?

Farrell Evans
  (3:17 PM)

Godo question. Dicky Pride.

Absolutelynocaddiesallowed (Ottawa Ontario)

I'm in an yahoo fantasy golf anti-points league and this week is challenging because it is an invitational so alot of lower-tier players aren't in the field 120. Needless to say I need to pick player that will MISS the cut in order to do well in my league. Who do you think will struggle the most of the these players. Kyle Stanley, Nick Watney,, Yang, Reaviw, Sabbatini, Villegas. Thanks

Farrell Evans
  (3:18 PM)

Kyle Stanley just fired his caddie a few weeks ago. So he's not playing all that well. Don't pick Watney. Yang is a grinder. Villegas has been mediocre all year. Pick him.

S. Tyler (Phoenix)

Thanks Mitch! With all the slow play hoopla going on, do you anticipate the PGA will target the AJGA to bring more awareness to slow play to in order to eliminate it at a younger age. I didn't think Hossler was going to pull the trigger on 18 in the fairway.

Farrell Evans
  (3:20 PM)

As Matt Kuchar said during the Players, a big part of playing on tour is learning how to play slow. Guys are grinding for millions of dollars. And the AJGA is already tough on slow play. But it doesn't matter.

Ed (Long Island)

Haven't seen Stevie Williams win in a while. Nice to have the silence. I guess Lacava is working out just fine. Think Williams is regretting being so outspoken now and losing Tiger's bag?

Farrell Evans
  (3:21 PM)

Steve resents Tiger so much for firing him that he would rather work for the 180th player on tour than loop for his old boss. He has no regrets. Adam Scott is a young player with great earning potential.

C (Michigan)

Can someone explain to me why it is that we are stuck with watching women's tennis all the time? Not that I have anything against the ladies game, but as with the recent French Open coverage, the World #1 Man is playing and they barely give a score update. Let's see the men play a little ESPN!

Farrell Evans
  (3:22 PM)

Remember a few years before Federer nobody wanted to watch the men. Now men's tennis is far more popular than the women's circuit.

Absolutelynocaddiesallowed (Ottawa Ontario)

Any suggestions / advice on how to motivate my 13 yr old daughter to play more competitive golf. SHe says its boring. Being a player myself I can understand how kids can think it is boring.

Farrell Evans
  (3:24 PM)

Your daughter has to want it for herself. You can't make her hit 300 balls a day and spend two hours on the putting green. I will encourage to do what she loves.

Simon (Dearborn)

Did you play junior golf? My son is 10 and just starting tournament play (he can shoot low to mid 80's for 18). What's he in store for? any advice?

Farrell Evans
  (3:26 PM)

A played a lot of junior golf. I would get your son the best lessons that you can afford and do them often. And let him play a lot. But regular lessons with a PGA member is the start. Then if he shows potential, which it sounds like he has, take him down to Florida to see Mike Bender or to the David Leadbetter Academy.

Nemes (P-Town)

A little surprising Kenny Perry doesn't win more often on the Champions Tour? Maybe Vijay Singh wouldn't win the Grand Slam when he is eligible (though sounds like he doesn't want to play that tour anytime soon). How many Senior Majors does Nicklaus have? If Tiger finishes with 14 majors, but then wins 14 Champions Tour majors, does he overtake Jack?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Nicklaus won as many champions tour events as he wanted to. When he went out there around 1990, that tour needed he and Trevino and Palmer to play. It's important and it worked.

PEEN (MICRO)

FE, you hitting the Congo pool this afternoon? Heard there are fine ladies there

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

Congo Pool?

Eric (Detroit)

Do you see a Tour event returning to Michigan to a course other than Oakland Hills? If so, where?

Farrell Evans
  (3:27 PM)

What was the course in Flint where they had the Buick event?

Nemes (P-Town)

Will AK be playing on a medical exemption status for next year? When do his wins come off for his playing status?

Farrell Evans
  (3:28 PM)

I'm not sure if AK has filed his medical but I'm sure he will get some kind of partial medical. But he will need one to play as a full member next year. It's not looking good for him. I hope he gets well.

Nemes (P-Town)

To get more interest, how about combining LPGA and Champions Tour Events, playing together, but with 2 different leaderboards, then crown a champion for each tour for each event?

Farrell Evans
  (3:29 PM)

That's crazy! There is no way in hell that that those old guys are going to share turf with the women. Maybe I'm wrong.

Alex (London)

Who will be the next Englishman to win a major, Rose, Donald, Westwood or the field?

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

Rose.

PEEN (MICRO)

Congressional, come on FE.

Farrell Evans
  (3:30 PM)

I haven't been by the pool at the Congo.

Eric (Detroit)

Warwick Hills for the Buick Open. I will be playing in the AJGA event hosted there in August. Any advice on how to make the next step as a junior player? Going from Mid to low 70s to the upper 60s?

Farrell Evans
  (3:32 PM)

Eric,Have you been up to TreeTops in Gaylord, Michigan? As for your game, keep working hard and make sure that you're practicing the right things. What I mean is at your age you shouldn't be honing swing flaws that you're going to have to change down the line. Find the best teacher in your area and see him often.

B (Oklahoma)

Doubt this makes the chat, but Prairie dunes also hosted the 2002 Women's U.S. Open....and most importantly, Bill Murray comes a couple times a year to play. :)

Simon (Dearborn)

Thanks Farrell - this is all new to me as I am a terrible golfer and did not do it as a youth. I have no idea how often to get lessons (he is with a PGA Pro about every 2-3 weeks during the season) or how much to play. I pretty much let him decide as I want it to remain fun.decide and go with it

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

2-3 weeks sounds fine. Just make sure that he's looking at tape of his swing and becoming a student of the golf swing and all facets of shooting low scores from reading greens to understanding wind directions to pace of play.

Nemes (P-Town)

Who will come back and end up the better player-Paul Casey or AK?

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

Paul Casey.

Nemes (P-Town)

If their careers ended today, who had the better career: Y.E. Yang or K.J. Choi?

Farrell Evans
  (3:34 PM)

K.J. Choi. It's not event close.

Patrick (Philly, PA)

Do you think Rocco Mediate would be a great Champions Tour player? I know his back has pretty much dictated his entire career, but I'd love to see him find further success when he gets there.

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

Rocco is a good player but even on the Champions Tour, you have to be able to hit your ball out there decently. Rocco is not a bomber.

Dan (Mechanicsburg, PA)

You have Mahan winning this week, right? Where do you see Tiger finishing?

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

That was last week I had Mahan winning. I like Dustin this week.

B (Oklahoma)

you put that one in, but not my first bit on the dunes....come on FE. haha. im trying to get KS on the map here!!

Ed (Long Island)

Will we ever the hype/potential of Michelle Wie materialze?

Farrell Evans
  (3:36 PM)

Sorry Ed. It's gone and past.

Ed (Long Island)

Is there any way to really prepare for the British Open? With weather having such a dramatic impact that could cause 4 club swings on shots, seems impossible.

Farrell Evans
  (3:38 PM)

Well, if you have never played off super skinny lies then you better go to your matted range and hang out. Then you could try taking a lot more club and choking down to hit the ball under the wind. That's a start. A

Bill (Scottsdale)

Farrell - Which players on tour have the best mental side of the game? What traits do these players have?

Farrell Evans
  (3:39 PM)

Webb has a great mental game. Jonathan Byrd is another one. So is Matt Kuchar. They are all easy guys. A couple of them are led by their faith.

Eric (Detroit)

Im actually visiting Treetops for the first time next weekend. I play out of Oakland University Golf and Learning Center, which was looked at by the Tour as a possible location. They just built a 3 million dollar clubhouse, and I think Els and Mickelson share the course record at 63. If you are ever in the Metro Detroit Area, I suggest to make a stop at Oakland to play the two courses they have there.

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

Thanks, I will. Have you played Detroit Golf Club.

Shoshana (Boston)

The Fed Ex Cup gives the same number of pts for each full field event. The Ryder Cup gives points for money, (since Colonel had larger purse Zach got more pts for his win than TW for instance). The OWGR awards pts for field strength (sort of). Which way do you think is the best for determining a team? or who qualifies?

Farrell Evans
  (3:40 PM)

I like the strength of field standard.

Absolutelynocaddiesallowed (Ottawa Ontario)

Thoughts on DLIII as a player/coach for the next Ryder Cup

Farrell Evans
  (3:41 PM)

I talked to DL3 today. I really believe he will be a better captain than he was a player because he's learned from his mistakes in six Ryder Cups.

Patrick (Philly, PA)

What's your take on the new Fall Series point allocation, and do you think the green jackets in Georgia will invite winners of those events now?

Shoshana (Boston)

Who do you think Love picks as his final 2 assistants? and as his captains picks?

Farrell Evans
  (3:43 PM)

S.They will be regular tour players who know the guys on the team very intimately. A guy or two like Sergio was two years ago for the Europeans.

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

Not sure why everyone seems to think that Webb Simpsons win was a "fluke". He shot the best score over four days, period. It's not like the other guys were docked strokes for slow play or their clubheads came flying off on a few shots. They simply weren't good enough. I you want to call his win "not exciting" then I may agree. But fluke...no.

Absolutelynocaddiesallowed (Ottawa Ontario)

Did you catch the F*&^ Bomb on live coverage of the Travelers last week. I think it was Brian Harman on the 15th tee ! It was hilarious. Who has the most obscene mouth on the tour ?

Farrell Evans
  (3:45 PM)

Brian is a hoot! Funny guy. Tiger has the meanest cussing on tour. A lot of guys make fun of themselves when they curse on the course. Spencer Levin comes to mind. But Tiger is the all time most profane that I have ever heard.

Eric (Detroit)

I haven't play at Detroit, but I've played the North Course at Oakland Hills and toured the South Course. Unbelievable facility. Also who is in your Top 5 for the Open?

Farrell Evans
  (3:45 PM)

Westwood, Tiger, Diufner, Dustin Johnson, Bubba

Bill (Scottsdale)

Hi, Farrell - Any suggestions on learning golf as an adult? I played baseball through my childhood, but other than a few rounds a year, I've never seriously taken up golf.

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Bill if you live in Scottsdale go see your local PGA professional soon.

Nick (Washington DC)

Farrell, What course should I live within a four hour drive of DC. I have played congressional, I heard links at lighthouse sound is cool, in ocean city? Any thoughts?

Farrell Evans
  (3:46 PM)

Have you played the Langston Golf course in the city?

Shoshana (Boston)

I think the fluke talk is bc Webb sort of came out of no where to have a great yr last year, and then this year had only contended once, and missed the cut at his last two events prior to the US Open. But he's a talented player. That being said I'm not ready to predict a HoF career

Farrell Evans
  (3:48 PM)

No way. No one is saying H of F. But a fluke was Ben Curtis in '03 at the British. Darren Clarke last year at the British.

Eric (Detroit)

Do you like Bubba because of the way he can move the ball into the cross winds?

Farrell Evans
  (3:48 PM)

I like Bubba because he can hit all the shots.

Shoshana (Boston)

Tiger cusses like he learned to play around military guys...oh wait. Perez can be fun :)

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

Yeah, Perez is fun but a clean cusser. Tiger is a spitter.

Nemes (P-Town)

Do caddies get paid anything if their guy doesn't make the cut? Travel, lodging, etc.?

Farrell Evans
  (3:49 PM)

caddies get around $1200 at the start of the week just for showing up.

B (Oklahoma)

"The Dunes" hosted the 2006 Senior U.S. Open. links style course, always windy, tips on a normal day yardage is around 6,600, I know they lengthened it for the Seniors, and would certainly need to for the young guns. Great atmosphere and the city loved having the Open back in '06

Nick (Washington DC )

Are there any Democrats on the PGA TOUR? I heard David Duvall was one?

Farrell Evans
  (3:50 PM)

Not many. I can't think of any right off hand.

Eric (Detroit)

What is the most underrated track on tour?

Farrell Evans
  (3:50 PM)

Copperhead at Innisbrook in Florida.

Ed (Long Island)

We've heard from many players say how thankful they are for Tiger for growing golf and specifically purses. With that being said, I find it odd that the field this week is not that strong, a coupple of weeks past the US Open, time to re-focus for the British - why not a better field?

Farrell Evans
  (3:51 PM)

It's not a bad field. Phil isn't playing and a few others, but Tiger makes it a strong field.

Harrison (New York)

What do you know about this weeks Euro tour event (the Irish Open)?

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

The players love the course and tho sweet is an audition for the club to be considered as an Open Championship venue.

Andrew (WI)

Sorry if I'm repeating anything, but I just entered the chat, read the first couple questions, and need to say something: WEBB SHOT A 136 ON THE WEEKEND AT THE US OPEN. That is not a fluke win by any metric possible.

Farrell Evans
  (3:52 PM)

Bingo!

Bill (Scottsdale)

Reading anything interesting this summer?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

I'm reading the newest installation of Robert Caro's epic study of the life and times of Lyndon Baines Johnson.

B (Oklahoma)

rick reilly a good golfer?

Farrell Evans
  (3:53 PM)

At one point, he was a single digit player. Not sure what he is now.

Mike (Charlotte, NC)

Doesn't the Web.com sponsorship seem questionable? Feels like after Nike and Nationwide that this is a little bit of a let down and the tour could have done better...wouldn't be surprised if they are looking again in two years when it goes out of business

Farrell Evans
  (3:54 PM)

Mike,From what I have read, Web.com has been around for a long time and it's product is in demand.

Shoshana (Boston)

There really aren't any great fields between now and British, a lot of guys use this as a break, bc the schedule from the British through play-offs/RC is so condensed. That being said are you surprised that so many guys are choosing to only play 1x between the opens? I thought with the extra wk this year more would add an extra event (like TW did)

Farrell Evans
  (3:56 PM)

As you know, it's not easy traveling across the pond, as the players like to say. You want to give yourself as much time as possible to adjust to the time change and the golf course. And it's an expensive trip. So you build a week of fun into the trip.

Shoshana (Boston)

So since web.com doesn't care about q school, why are we carrying on with this nonsense? (and no the numbers/analysis don't remotely support the tour's contention that NTW is better for development, and if it were true you wouldn't go to a short series anyways)

Eric (Detroit)

Where do you see Tiger's Next 4 Major wins to tie Jack?

Bill (Scottsdale)

Thanks for the responses, Farrell - I always appreciate your chats and columns.

Andrew (WI)

I think the PGA tour can learn from European football. Every year, the best teams in the 2nd division get the call up and the worst in the 1st division get sent down. Why do we need the bad PGA tour players to go head to head with the good Nationwide players? Make the regular PGA tour season mean something.

Alex (Anaheim)

Should Tiger be the favorite this weekend?

Farrell Evans
  (3:58 PM)

Tiger should be the favorite to win every week he plays, especially now that he's found his game.

Nick (Washington DC)

I cant help but notice Padraig Harrington has a habit of gagging down the stretch in majors wether he wins or loses (2009 PGA, 2012 US OPEN 18th hole) Do you think he will win another major?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Nick, Paddy has three majors and he could have won at Olympic. Sure he can win another one. He's still a young man.

SenYor (Stees)

FE, who will have a better showing this week. Pant Cants or Beau Hoss

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Hossler

King of Concerts (stees)

Would you rather go to a crunchy concert or the Masters?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Masters.

DOWNSTAIRS HOOTS (stees)

FE, Does Beau Hossler make the cut?

Farrell Evans
  (3:59 PM)

Yes.

DOWNSTAIRS HOOTS (stees)

FE, Who is your British Open pick?

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Jason Dufner.

Farrell Evans
  (4:00 PM)

Hey guys my time is up. See you next week. I love rolling with you guys.

Shoshana (Boston)

Next time someone asks if TW should be the favorite. They should have to name who should be the favorite instead (and why). Thanks for the chat. Enjoy my old stomping grounds, and try to keep cool

Farrell Evans
  (4:01 PM)

Peace.
