Fantasy Sports with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (3:01 PM)

Hello to all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session. I am Eric and we've got lots to discuss today. Assuming mostly baseball, but if you've got a football question, what with the fine ESPN Draft Kit having launched, go for it! Thanks for showing up and let's get started...

Alex (Anaheim)

Rickie Weeks homered today, is he coming around a bit?

Eric Karabell
  (3:03 PM)

I can't really go there based on just one home run today. I would have dropped Weeks a month ago. He is hitting .244 in June, but it's not really getting so much better that he needs to be trusted.

Miles (Charlotte)

Would you accept Gardner for Bauer right now?

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Yes, I would. I think Bauer will be terrific in time, but to rely on him this season, I just can't do it. There are so many good pitchers this season... and really, not a lot of base stealers. I mean, Tony Campana is tied for the MLB lead in steals, and he isn't playing anymore. And nobody is on pace for 60 steals. Gardner is a difference maker.

Rob (Frankfort, IL)

ETA for Danny Hultzen???

Eric Karabell
  (3:04 PM)

Not sure he's making his Mariners debut anytime soon. Why would they do that? I'll say September. By the way, Hultzen facing Jamie Moyer in Triple-A tomorrow! Talk about an age and experience difference!

Dr. James Andrews Receptionist (Alabama)

Am I expecting a call from Daniel Hudson to schedule a Tommy John? Would you drop him for Burnett, Quintana, Hughes, or Morales?

Eric Karabell
  (3:05 PM)

Definitely for Burnett... no question. And for Hughes now. I really don't expect Hudson to pitch anytime soon...hoping it's not a major surgery.

BOBBY (Hill)

Who do you like ROS? Stubbs, Cody Ross, or Pagan?

Eric Karabell
  (3:06 PM)

Like all three, actually. In order it would be Stubbs, Pagan and then Ross. The first two fellas run. Stubbs runs a lot...70 steals and 37 home runs the past two seasons. So he won't win a batting title... very productive.

Steve (IL)

Addison Reed....woof.

john (on fire in CO)

Which side do you like Ek? Rizzo/Kershaw or Ortiz/Capuano? Thanks!

Eric Karabell
  (3:07 PM)

Saves are saves. He doesn't pitch enough to alter your fantasy team's ERA and WHIP. And really, Reed is good...not many bad outings.

Eric Karabell
  (3:08 PM)

And the Ortiz/Capuano side of that trade... Capuano is not bad, despite his detractors.

Mitch (New York)

Drop Ichiro?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

I am no longer expecting Ichiro to hit .300 or steal 30 bases. If you can add someone better, go for it. This is not simply a tough start for Suzuki... he's apparently old now.

Jeff (ABQ)

Keeper league and I'm so far out its laughable. Took over a team that has essentially no 2nd baseman. Best prospect/injured to pick up for next year?

Eric Karabell
  (3:09 PM)

Well, no idea who is out there, but see if Jedd Gyorko is. Could be Padres starter there soon, and he can certainly hit.

Phil (Miami)

ROS: Hosmer or Rizzo?

Eric Karabell
  (3:10 PM)

Hosmer, definitely. I like Rizzo but the overall love and expectations for the kid are just way out of control.

Trevor Bauer (Heading to the Mound)

What is my trade value right now? What level hitter or pitcher should I command?

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

I will say that it's a great time to move this guy BEFORE he actually pitches... value is SO high right now and if he goes like 5 innings and allows 3 runs Thursday, then it's like taking a new car off the lot... value drops. Bauer isn't Strasburg. And I can't possibly imagine what someone in your league would give for him...shoot high and work backward.

bill (james)

what do you think of this perez kid for texas that just called up? worth a shot without dropping anyone

Eric Karabell
  (3:11 PM)

Sure, but I doubt he's still in the majors after the All-Star break.

Chris (Cincy)

Didn't Trout and Harper have a lot of love and expectations?

Eric Karabell
  (3:12 PM)

Those guys are special. They're different. What Trout is doing... harkens back to the days of Griffey being that young. Just doesn't happen every 20 years or so.

Tony Campana (Stuck on the bench)

Am I ever gonna get back on the field? I'm a decent fielder, my speed distracts the pitchers, and I can hit ok...don't the Cubs want to win? Do I even have a chance at 50 SB?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

There's the rub... Cubs not really trying to win now. Trying to build and nobody would say Tony is a building block. He's just a fast guy that can run. Of course, David DeJesus isn't a building block either! I know you and all of us want Campana to play and yes, he could steal 50 quite easily if he played regularly... but I think Theo and the Cubs are smarter than that. They can play DeJesus and use as trade bait... and then Brett Jackson comes up...

BT (Chicago)

You know how you said a month ago that Rollins looked done? How does he look now? Sell or hold Rollins?

Eric Karabell
  (3:14 PM)

I looks reborn now. I don't think anyone expected he'd hit what, 7 home runs in a month. Apparently the birth of his child changed everything. He did look done... and now he does not. I'm pleased about that. I'd hold.

Andrew (Atlanta)

Rios is dare i say....quietly relevant? You buy him as a top 25 OF the rest of the way?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Borderline top 25... good player, can hit for power and run and be streaky.

Michael (Milwaukee)

Did everyone forget Trout had a pretty bad year last season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:15 PM)

Yes, I think we all disregarded it. The way he's playing now he's a real-life MVP candidate. Not joking, either.

Jim (Braintree, MA)

Yo EK what are you thoughts on selling high on McCutchen? Feel like the avg has to come down and counting stats already hurt by the fact he plays for Pit.

Eric Karabell
  (3:16 PM)

Nah, monster player capable of 30/30 someday. Why does the average have to come down? It's half a season in that brutal lineup... more proof that lineup protection could not mean less. He's doing this with the likes of Garrett Jones and Casey McGehee protecting him! It doesn't matter!

TJ (SF)

Harper or Middlebrooks for ROS? Or are they comparable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

No, not even close. Middlebrooks has legit power but does not walk, and he's going to drop 50 points in batting average. Harper is patient, can hit for average and does steal bases. And has power.

Andrew (Atlanta)

Bruce or Trumbo ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:17 PM)

Bruce, but I absolutely believe and have written prior that this new Trumbo is legit. But some batting average regression likely.

Greg (St. Louis)

What happened to Andy Pettitte today he only made it through 4.

Eric Karabell
  (3:18 PM)

Took a grounder off his shin... didn't appear too serious.

Brad (New York,NY)

Trade Cody Ross for Lance Lynn?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

In general I'd say no, actually... I like Lynn but it's so easy to find decent pitching in standard leagues... and Ross should hit 20 home runs. Power is much more in demand.

Mark (NY)

Eric, Worley or Bauer for ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:19 PM)

Ugh. Have to say Worley. More proven at this level... Bauer has monster upside, but is no sure thing initially.

Pedro (Pittsburgh)

Rank the following: Flacco, Carson, Josh Freeman

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

Football!!! I personally have Freeman bouncing back some, so it's him then Flacco and I just can't trust Palmer.

Kevin (CA)

Wil myers relevant this season?

Eric Karabell
  (3:20 PM)

In about 3 weeks, yes.

Victor (California)

Andrew Cashner worth the add if you need strikeouts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:21 PM)

Sure, but have doubts he can stay healthy as a starter. It's nice he's in San Diego!

chris (Pingree Grove IL)

Was offered Howard/Asdrubal for Kipnis/Plouffe do I take it, Cano is my starting 2B.

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

The fact you have Cano is irrelevant, no? You could always play Kipnis at DH, no? Yeah, I'd do that anyway.

El Guapo (Santa Polco)

Ok, so I get that Rizzo is a bit over-hyped, but what about in Keeper leagues? Would you rather have him or a guy like Matt Harrison on your roster in a shallow keeper?

Eric Karabell
  (3:22 PM)

The hitter, almost always the hitter. I see Rizzo being statistically like Freddie Freeman in a year or so.

Sophia (AR)

Would you deal Miggy for Votto straight up in a dynasty league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:23 PM)

I rank Cabrera a bit better, but each is a first-rounder. Third base is tougher to get than first base.

Jule (Atlanta, GA)

Will Cody Ross still have a place to play when Crawford and Ellsbury return?

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

The way he is hitting yes, right field. Perhaps in a Sweeney or Nava platoon.

Dan (CA)

ROS Cashner or Cobb? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (3:25 PM)

Cobb. We have no idea how many starts Cashner can make. He's a bit risky.

David (Cottage Grove)

With the 15th pick the 76ers select...

Eric Karabell
  (3:26 PM)

Hopefully one of the 6-11 power forwards... Moultrie, Terrence or Perry Jones. Big needs there.

JOhnny (Ak)

Was offered King Felix for McCutchen? Keep my hitter in a year of deep pitching, right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Definitely keep your hitter, no matter the year. And Felix worries me some... he's not the next Lincecum, as some believe, but still, not top 10.

Bob (Seattle)

FOOTBALL! Regardless of round, who are you keeping - McFadden or J. Graham?

Eric Karabell
  (3:27 PM)

Likely McFadden. Running backs don't drive the bus the way they used to, but McFadden's potential is top 5.

Will (The OC)

Welcome back Utley! Not to my team of course, but a good guy returns. Anyway, please rank Stubbs, Ross, Carlos Lee, Blanco.

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

Yes, welcome back Chase. Phillies and fantasy needs you! And I think he'll be good... even averaging ONLY 109 games the past two seasons with the exact same condition he has now, totaled 27 homers and 27 steals. I'd rank Stubb, Lee, Ross and Blanco.

Chris (Cincy)

Do you think Jermaine Gresham has a breakout year? He will be the #2 target behind AJ Green.

Eric Karabell
  (3:29 PM)

I don't assume he's the No. 2 target... I do like Gresham, but not in my top 12 tight ends.

Chris Carr (Campbell, SC)

What does it take to get a little Carlos Ruiz love around these parts? What he is doing is simply amazing.

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

It is hard to believe his offensive breakout, but it appears legit.

Bill (Kentucky)

Felix for Lawrie in a keeper league, which side do you want?

Eric Karabell
  (3:30 PM)

Lawrie, definitely. There are a million pitchers out there...

Ron (North Philly)

More FOOTBALL!!! I only get to keep two out of: Charles, Forte, Andre Johnson, Gronk, Nicks, Peyton. Who you keeping?

Eric Karabell
  (3:31 PM)

That's pretty good there... I'd rule out Peyton immediately. And probably Nicks. Charles and Forte no sure things... but I would keep them. Andre J is no sure thing anymore, too. And Gronk's TDs have to drop some.

Ramsey (Los Angeles)

Dice-K is looking like a relatively decent pitcher. Are you picking him up or passing?

Eric Karabell
  (3:33 PM)

He has looked good, but when the WHIP rises... it won't be pretty. Career WHIP is 1.38. Current WHIP is 1.13. Be concerned.

Andrew (Washington)

Ike Davis seems to have figured something out, top 15 1B ROW?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Power looks better of late, but still making a lot of outs. Top 15 this year? I'll say no, but still a bright future.

Christian (Jax)

Sell high on Papi? Unsustainable?

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

Why is that not sustainable? Looks fine to me.

The Rick (The Bronx)

What are your thoughts on spending $160 of my $200 budget on Brady, Rodgers, Rice and Foster? I would still have 6 roster spots to fill and a bench.

Eric Karabell
  (3:34 PM)

All or nothing... seems ok until one of your top 4 gets hurt. And when they do, it's over.

Jacoby Ellsbury (Rehab)

I am starting rehab today, would you trade for me? Accept an offer of elsbury, morse and jj for trumbo, laroche and westbrook?

Eric Karabell
  (3:35 PM)

Absolutely. Ellsbury is going to rock the rest of the way.

Chris (SD)

Football! Keeping AJohnson, Rice, and McCoy. Marshall in the 3rd or VJax in the 9th? PPR.

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

That's nice... normally the difference in rounds would be enough there to go Jackson, but Marshall is better and your big 4 would be in place, and you'd have 2 earlier picks for a QB, flex... sure!

BORG (COMO)

Marmol is available on the waiver wire. Should I drop Marshall for him?

Eric Karabell
  (3:36 PM)

If you need every last save, yes. Just don't watch Marmol pitch... it's just too painful.

Chris (Cincy)

Matt Moore.......grrrrrr

Eric Karabell
  (3:37 PM)

I concur, grrrrr. Chris Sale is having the season we thought Moore would have. Still a potential monster at any time, but not today.

Eric Karabell
  (3:38 PM)

Breaking news: Pettitte broke his leg today. Out six weeks. What a shame. Was pitching well... drop him in fantasy.

Seth (NY)

A-Gon ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

I think Adrian Gonzalez will get better, certainly over what he's done so far.

nando (boston)

I was offered Konerko and RA Dickey for Trumbo and De Aza, do I take it?

Eric Karabell
  (3:39 PM)

Yeah, obviously.

robbie (norristown, pa)

Aoki -- please discuss.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

Looks legit to me... some speed. More power than expected. Not a fluke at all and will keep playing.

James (Portland)

What do you think about dealing Holliday for Allen Craig and Peavy? I need pitching help after losing Morrow and Beachy.

Eric Karabell
  (3:40 PM)

I think if you want to move Holliday that you can do better.

Jared (Waco)

Better DL stash between 2 rehabbers...Crawford or Howard?

Eric Karabell
  (3:41 PM)

Crawford there. I do not have high expectations for Howard.

Eric (Cool-name-town)

Utley, Yunel Escobar, Neil Walker, and Jhonny Peralta - drop 1.

Eric Karabell
  (3:42 PM)

Walker doesn't seem special to me... or Peralta. I'd cut 'em both! But Peralta first.

will (west philly)

is either bowe for $22 or garcon for $7 worth keeping in a 12 team league $200 budget

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Garcon is a reasonable price... Bowe is expensive there.

Eric (Oxford, MA)

Best 2 ROS - Morse, Hart, Goldschmidt, Rizzo

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

Morse and Hart.

Matty (ATL)

Josh Reddick have any trade value left? Ride him out til Bonifacio returns?

Eric Karabell
  (3:43 PM)

He's a bit like LaHair... should hit enough home runs to matter, but the batting average is going down.

Brad (Hot Springs)

Is it just me or does 1b not seem as solid as it usually is?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

No position is anymore... expect starting pitching and perhaps catching.

Riv34 (Huntington Beach)

Was offered Granderson for my Chris Sale in 6x6 H2H league, thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Gotta do that.

Andrew (Atlanta)

concerned with Cliff Lee?

Eric Karabell
  (3:44 PM)

Nope. I don't look at wins the way 90 percent of the media does. Tells us nothing about performance.

Randi (San diego)

Eric, start McDonald tonight against your hot Phillie bats?

Eric Karabell
  (3:46 PM)

Yeah, I think McDonald has earned that. Terrific season. And I am also enjoying people ripping the Phillies offense... since May 1 the Phillies have scored the most runs in the NL. Trends matter more than season totals.. That said, a top pitcher doesn't get sat.

The Prez (White House)

My White Sox undressed the Red Sox don't ya think?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

I don't see how the Red Sox got anything of value... but to them moving Youk was more important. If it works for them, so be it.

Yogi (Las Cruces, NM)

Alex Gordon or Ben Revere ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:47 PM)

All Revere can do is hit singles and steal bases. Gordon can do more things.

James McDonald (Pittsburg)

Am I a legit top 20 SP for the next few seasons?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

I didn't say that. No.

Doug (MT)

Bench Zimmerman tonight at Coors?

Eric Karabell
  (3:48 PM)

No. Never bench Jordan Zimmm...

Steve (IL)

What are your expectations for Berkman when he comes back? I've stashed him only because I feel like so few potential impact bats become available mid-season. Thoughts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Agreed. I think he can hit falling out of bed in the morning, and there just aren't a lot of hitters like him.

Ricky Romero (Toronto)

Is my start today (3.0+ IP, 9 R (8 ER), 7 H, 6 BB, 1 SO; 90 PC 48 ST) an outlier or am I going downhill for a bit?

Eric Karabell
  (3:49 PM)

Just a bad day.

Scott (Northglenn, CO)

Better chance of ending up the #1 QB this year - Cam or Vick?

Eric Karabell
  (3:51 PM)

Vick. But I doubt either guy is top 3. Questions about being top 5.

Jonathon Niese (New York)

I am having a solid season. When do I start getting some hype and love from the experts?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Was on my preseason sleeper list. Doing pretty much what I expected, though with higher K rate.

Scott (Denver, CO)

Ian Kennedy for Mark Trumbo, which side do you like better?

Eric Karabell
  (3:52 PM)

Depends some on need, but as we've established here, the hitter. Trumbo is legit.

Doug (MT)

Seems like Romero has a lot of bad days...

Eric Karabell
  (3:53 PM)

Higher ERA and WHIP than normal and lower K rate, but still... pretty reliable guy the past few seasons.

Alex (Chicago)

Never quite understood why a fantasy GM wants their player to get love and hype, unless they're looking to deal them...right?

Eric Karabell
  (3:54 PM)

I suppose... it's like they want to be praised for their picks.

Brian (Boston)

AL Only keeper league, trying to win the here and now. Martin Perez worth a grab over Diamond or Matusz?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Yes, but again, might not be up for long this season.

Kyle (California)

FOOTBALL!!!! Slotted for the number 6 pick in my draft, assuming Rodgers, Brady, Rice, Foster are gone...who you taking?

Eric Karabell
  (3:55 PM)

Well, McCoy and Jones-Drew are pretty obvious there.

danny (ronkonkoma ny)

any chance the yankees go after either dempster or garza from the cubs with pettitte and cc headed to the dl in the same day?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Always a chance... but the Sabathia thing is minor. It's two starts and he's back after the break. David Phelps can make 2 starts and the Yankees are fine. I'd be surprised if the Yankees panic here.

Mitch (NJ)

baseball is so boring when Matt Kemp isnt playing

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

I disagree! I can be interested in any game, even Padres-Astros. Kip Wells!

Chang (Work)

Deal A-Rod and Sale for Lawrie in a keeper league?

Eric Karabell
  (3:56 PM)

Absolutely.

Matt (MPLS)

Speakng of Jones Drew.....Are you comfortable taking him that high? I get he had a great year, but so many injury questions prior to last year.....

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Only other running back I can make a case for over him in the No. 4 RB spot is Ryan Mathews. Sure, I have concerns... I have concerns about every RB though.

Tom (PA)

PPR League..Antonio Brown , Jordy Nelson, Dez Bryant....gotta drop one. Who packs?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Brown goes. Even in a PPR there.

Steve (Work)

You all in on Trent Richardson in a keeper league? Max bid with a $200 budget?

Eric Karabell
  (3:57 PM)

Didn't make my top 10 running backs... I dunno, $30?

Alex (Chicago)

BASEBALL!! Jeter or Plouffe ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Now that's just ridiculous!

Brad (AR)

EK, is there one guy in baseball that you are looking at right now and saying, "Man, this is a great time to buy low on that guy?"

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Cliff Lee! And probably Utley, too.

Brian (St Paul)

Where you takin' Adrian Peterson?

Eric Karabell
  (3:58 PM)

Prob second round.

Riv34 (Huntington Beach)

Yanks get Greinke now

Eric Karabell
  (3:59 PM)

Doubtful.

Eric Karabell
  (4:00 PM)

Well folks, that's about all the time I have been given for today. I thank you for checking in and asking questions or just reading what's going on. It's fantasy sports, it should be fun. And to me it is! So have a great day and best of luck with your teams, real and fantasy! Adios!
