Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (11:55 AM)

Boy, just when you think things are going smoothly . . we'll get underway in about five minutes

Chuck (Long Island)

I know its early but since Stewartis CC'S personally catcher would he still catch him in the playoffs?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:00 PM)

Hey, Chuck. Let's see if CC makes it to the playoffs first. and lately, Girardi has been talking about getting CC and Russell back together soon, probably for precisely the purpose you mention

Matt (Boston)

Do you think Corey Wade's recent problems will get him sent to AAA when Joba and Aardsma return? Thank you.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:01 PM)

It's possible. Then again, wade might straighten himself out over the next month and go back to being a reliable part of the bullpen

Mike (Detroit)

Do you think Curtis deserves to be an allstar this year?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

excellent question. The only offensive category in which he leads CFs is HRs. His BA is the lowest, his Ks the highest. I think he is good in the field. But if I were choosing the All-Star starters, I;d probably go Adam Jones , with Mike Trout as the backup

Dave (Bronx)

I think the Yankees should keep Wise on the roster even when Gardner comes back.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:03 PM)

I think they might, but it depends on what pitching moves they might need to make and who they can afford to move when -- and if -- gardner comes back

Henry (Atlanta)

Do you think the "hitting with runners in scoring position issue" is overblown?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:05 PM)

yes and I have written it many times. in a game like Friday night;s loss to the Mets, it seems really important, but in the next two wins, it didn;t seem to matter at all. and they beat the nationals twice while going a combined 2-30 w/RISP. It's one of those stats that is easy to quote, easier to misunderstand and way too easy to use as a crutch

Mike (NJ)

"The general rule of thumb is, if things seem too good to be true, they usually are."You're right Wallace, SOME fans are pessimistic. So this, by definition, is pandering to them. Simple question - you feel good about yourself with stuff like this?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:05 PM)

should I feel bad about being right? Hadn;t thought of that one

Brian (Astoria, NY)

Do you think there will be any changes to the rotation after the trade deadline? Also, do you think Girardi will stick with DeWayne Wise at Left Field and Ibanez at DH?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:07 PM)

before the CC injury i would have said no. Now, depending on the severity, Cashman might be shopping for a starter in a couple of weeks. As for Wise, once Gardner comes back he is probabl a luxury the Yankees will not longer be able to carry on the roster

Mike (NJ)

Are we feeling a little defensive about our ill-timed "Is This As Good as they Yankees are" and "Worried about CC?" panders?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:08 PM)

um, no. Unlike you, I put my name to my opinions before things happen, not after. and I get well-paid for it. And once this chat is over, i;m headed to the beach. So i;d say I;m feeling pretty good right now

Frank (Yonkers)

Wally, I know things are going well and that the Yanks could win as currently constructed. But for playoff baseball I think they're light at the top end of the rotation, specifically a 1a or 2 to slot with CC. We know Cashman was hoping one (or more) of the high end arms would turn into a top of the rotation pitcher, but so far none has. Some we know it's not going to happen - Joba, Hughes (only diehards with rose colored glasses still think Hughes will make the jump to the top of the rotation), Brackman, Betances - and the rest of the hopefuls list are injured - Pineda, Banellos...?. Pettitte and Koroda are at best stop gap top of rotation pitchers. What do you see Cashman doing? Keeping on with stop gaps? Midseason trade? High end free agent?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:09 PM)

Frank, you raise some excellent questions and I think the CC injury, without even knowing the extent of it, changes the equation somewhat. At 9 am this morning I did not think Cashman would be in the market for a high-end starter. Now I think he might be

John (East Elmhurst, NY)

When are Banuelos and Campos coming back? The issues with their elbows are not supposed to be serious by why is it taking so long? Worried!

Wallace Matthews
  (12:11 PM)

Without having any real details on either of their injuries -- quite honestly, neither seemed likely to wind up in the bronx before september, if then -- just understand that the Yankees, like all organizations, routinely downplay the severity of injuries. Eduardo Nunez went out with a minor thumb injury. Hasn;t played in a month. Same goes for Brett Gardner, who had a slight muscle strain. Won;t see him for at least three more weeks. I'm not telling you to worry, just saying when the team says something's not serious, take it with a grain of salt

Carl (Everywhere, US)

What do you think Cashman is considering for trades before the deadline with CC heading to the DL and Garner already there?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

Just a couple of days ago I asked Cashman that question and he responded, "How the hell am I supposed to know what my needs will be a month from now?" well, he knows now. I also asked him what caliber or player he might look at. This is what he said: "im interested in anything that is good and comes for free."Lotsa luck

Alex (Anaheim)

Do you expect Sabathia to just miss the 2 starts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

I'm sorry alex but I don;t know the severity of the injury. all i can tell you is, look at the list of yankees on the DL and tell me how many returned right at the end of 15 days

Chives (NYC)

CC is only going to miss two start right is that certain? He's going to be back right after all star break?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:14 PM)

See previous answer

Corey (Long Island)

Who is going to get the start now that CC is on the DL? Garcia or AAA player?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:14 PM)

Yankees say garcia goes friday. no announcement for anything after that yet

Eric (NY)

With CC headed to the DL one wonders if Cashman needs to make a move. With Javy Vasquez, Roger Clemens, and Ron Villone available who do you think he signs?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:15 PM)

I would say Clemens now that he has been vindicated and his good name has been cleared

Tito (Queens)

Haven't they learned from Garcia's 5 plus runs per game? Why can't they give Phelps a shot? I guess since they are in first place Joe wants to give up a game.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

I believe Joe and Cashman trust Freddy more than Phelps at this point becuase of his experience. Plus, they sent Phelps down to stretch him out and get his pitch count back up again; maybe he;s not quite ready. In any event, Girardi and the yankees don;t just give up games. Freddy might be a one shot and they're hoping for the best from him

Adam Lavian (New York)

hey wallace, about the yankees rotation... I think in the playoffs it will be CC, pettite, then nova. But after that i am not sure whether it would be Kuroda or Hughes. I'm leaning toward kuroda, but Hughes start last night made me think about that even more. Who do u think should be the yanks 4th starter?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:19 PM)

I think it's too early to say with less than half the season gone, but it's a nuce problem to have, wouldn't you agree? Right now, i don;t think there's a bad choice either way. a lot will depend on the matchups and how many pitchers Girardi and cashman think they need for the first round, and also if they need ot burn a pitcher just to get there in the event they have to play the one-game pla in, which on June 27, 2012 seems unlikely

Jason (Queens)

Always great chatting with you, are the Yanks going to make any chances to solidfy their bench and long man? Wade was embrassing last night? and Wise is good for now, but cant be trusted in the Playoffs

Wallace Matthews
  (12:21 PM)

thanks, jason. I think the bench has actually been an asset of this team and certainly an upgrade from last year. besides, as we have seen, Girardi rarely goes to the bench in playoff games and this lineup almosts never requires a pinch-hitter except in some late-inning left-righty switches. As for Wade, give him time to work his way through this. he was pretty good last year and for the first six weeks of this year

Mark (Belmont, NC)

Why won't Notebook Joe bat Grandy Man in the 5th or 6th spot? A-Rod is no longer a major power source and he could hit 2nd.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:23 PM)

I've asked this question many times myself, and the best info I can glean from his answers is that he doesn;t want to stack his lefties in the middle of the order because of possible late-game lefty relievers coming in and neutralizing them, which I think is illogicial since cano hits everyone, Tex and swisher are switchhitters and Grandy has gotten much better against lefties. I agree that Granderson;s power is wasted in the 2 hole

Travis (Dixfield, Maine)

Still heard nothing about Joba from this blog or ESPN, but other outlets are reporting that he threw a BP the other day and could be in the minors in 2-3 weeks. Any info on this?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:24 PM)

It was in our Yankees blog last night. Thank you for reading

RJ (Brooklyn)

what do we know about CC's injury?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

Only that it is a strained left adductor, which is the muscle on th einside of the thigh up by the groin. And as we saw with andy Pettite two years ago, groin strains can take time to heal

Tracy (CT)

I fail to see what Wise did wrong. Its not like players have never folled umps before on short hops in the outfield, or by not touching a base on a double play. If An Indians player had done the same thing, their fans would cheer.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

I don;t think anyone accused Wise of doing anything wrong. It's the umpire who screwed up. all he had to do was ask to see the ball in the glove, and there is no controversy

James (BX)

Ken Rosenthal says if Grineke doesnt sign extension, he's likely to be moved, what do you think it would cost the Yanks? Chances he is Burnett Vol 2? (great stuff, cant handle NY)

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

The Yankees have shied away from greinke becuse of his anxiety issues. Not sure if crisis mode with CC injury changes their thinking on that

AZ (Astoria, NY)

Who is the most likely Yankees pitcher to get traded at the deadline?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

I would think Freddy, but he needs a good outing or two before anyone would be interested, I think

george (long island)

Wally, what do you make of Soriano's resurgence since Mo went down. Should we worry he will opt out of his contract at the end of the year. Would be great if he doesnt and we make him full time closer after Mo (probably) retires after 2013.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:28 PM)

Well, that's why Boras wrote the contract tha way, but its highly unlikely he will be able to get more than the $13.5M the yankees owe him from anyone else. (I think that's the right figure)

Kevin (Brooklyn)

With CC moving to the DL do you see Garcia getting a spot start or the Yankees bringing up someone?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

Yankees have said Freddy goes on friday. No plans beyond that yet

Starting Freddy looks like it will be a disaster considering he's basically been a mop-up man or in when the Yankees are in the middle of blowing out the opposition. Is he really the best option they have for Friday night?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

Best option = Only option

Matt (DC)

Wallace who do you think will be the starting catcher next season?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:30 PM)

excellent question. Looks like Russell Martin should have taken that three-year deal the Yankees were talking about in spring training, doesn;t it? I know who it won;t be: Cervelli

Wallace Matthews
  (12:31 PM)

Thanks guys, a lot of great questions today. I enjoyed it. I;m headed to the beach now. see you next week. we'll do it on July 4 from tampa
