Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

Hello all. Welcome to another offseason Hawks chat.I just got done attending the NHL draft in Pitt and the NHLPA meetings in Chicago this week..the hot stove is about to get hotter with free agency starting on sunday. The league just announced the salary cap has gone up to 70 mil so it gives the hawks some more room..they are at about 62 mil in salary right now for 23 players..all of whom finished the season with the team except for carcillo who was hurt...lets get to the chat..fire away!

PapaSchizzle (Da Nort-woods)

Do you see Stan taking a serious run at signing Ryan Suter regardless of if he's been able to move Montador or Hjalmarsson? Or would a trade have to happen before signing RS?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

With the cap up to 70..they could do it...they would still, Im sure, move salary out but they could sign and then trade later...might reduce the leverage if a team knows the hawks HAVE to move a d-man but at least they could do it...so yes

Jim (burbank,il)

Do you see hawks being major players in Suter/Weber signing?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

I wish on Weber but now way...I cant see them doing the offer sheet thing...that stuff is such junk with their gentleman's agreement etc. for offer sheets..Frankly I dont think the hawks would rock the boat that way..Suter is the same as it has been..hes been telling people hes interested due to proximity of home and his uncle playing here ,etc. so yes on him but a lot of moving parts for suter and a lot of teams interested

Jim (burbank,il)

Jess,Do you think Bowman has been told by upper management to shed payroll and lets see what hawks draft picks can do?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

No..now as far as spending to 70 mil or close I have no idea but I have never gotten wind of Wirtz putting the handcuffs on spending more in salary...within reason of course

KC (Park Ridge)

Were you surprised the Hawks signed Carcillo to a 2-year extension in March when they could have waited until now to see how he has progressed from his knee injury?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:08 PM)

I guess a little but they must have had positive signs from the docs etc. What I WAS surprised at was Q's unwavering support of him and his style...I know he wanted a little chaos but a couple of suspensions I thought woiuld be too much but they like him...a lot ...and maybe they'll turn out to be right but round 1 was a loser...he couldnt control himself and it cost him and the team if you buy into them falling in the standings IN PART cause he left the lineup...Im not sure I do but anyway those are the facts...

Mike (Lincoln Park)

I have heard the Nash for Kane rumors and as much as I like Nash I think Kane has a brighter future. Who do you think will have a better next 5 seasons Kane or Nash?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

The rumors were made up. Not true..just people adding 2 + 2...hawks MIGHT kane out and we know NASh does want out so why not star for star...wasnt going to happen...next 5? hmm...call me a dummy or a homer or maybe Im right but Ill go with kane..5 yrs younger too but who knows, Nash on a good team might be a monster still..hes only 28...i mean I should go with the power forward..they play diff games...I still have faith in Kane..maybe misplaced..but I know he loves the game..does he love it enough to REALLY get down to business..we'll see

Mike (Lincoln Park)

As far as lower tier FAs what do you think about Ryan Smyth, Sami Salo & Juri Hudler?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

I like Hudler, not sure how lower tier he is..going to command a big buck..not so high on smyth at his age...or salo...obviously have to have back up plans if things dont happen...they could be I suppose but dont think they are on hawks radar right now

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

Hudler isnt coming..

Eric (Chicago)

Could we not offer something really similar to Pittsburgh for Jordan Staal? Why does the 2nd line center position continue to get ignored?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:14 PM)

I heard there were talks...pitt liked Dylan Olsen and bolland hawks didnt want to budge, offered hammer..maybe they didnt want that much money back..but I think it would not have mattered cause he wasnt going to sign an extension right away...unless it was Carolina...as for 2nd line..stan will say we make too much of a big deal of it..a lot of people in hockey would disagree including me

Andrew S. (Chicago, IL)

Why not just bring up these youngsters like Morin, Olsen, Smith, Pirri and let them play?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

Well, how many roster spots do you want for young guys...right now, shaw kruger hayes all ahead of those guys...olsen right now is up there already..so again, someone loses a job for more young players to make team etc

Don (Columbus, OH)

Do the Hawks have the ability to send Crawford down without clearing waivers or something of that sort? If so, any chance of getting Tim Thomas for a season?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

No on Thomas..here is my edcuated opinion on this ..if thomas had indicated he just wanted out of boston and maybe get an extension for another year or two the hawks would have been interested...but he DOES NOT want to play this year under any circumstances. At least thats how he feels right now..could it change closer to camp? of course but I dont think it will..and craw does have to clear waivers

Mike (Schaumburg)

I saw that Justin Schultz turned down Detroit as they weren't on his 'short list'... do the Hawks have any interest in him and do you think they are on Schultz's list? Can they afford him with our current cap situation?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:18 PM)

Its all about canada it seems for him..and yes hawks could afford but he's going north almost for sure

craig, illinois [via mobile]

I heard that the hawks might make a run at doan. At first I didn't like the idea but now I'm having second thoughts. Stalberg/ kane/ doan would be a nice line. And I also think evander kane with Toews and patty kane would also be nice. I just want your thoughts on that.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:19 PM)

Not sure where you "heard" hawks might make a run at doan...I mean I guess every team "could" make a run at doan but I dont see it happeneing..he prob wants loing term..hawks wont do that..in fact I know he does...again, at least at this moment..I love the guy though so I hope IM wrong and they get him

Pat (Chicago)

We'd all like to see the Hawks make some moves this offseason, but they clearly can't be done without shedding some salary first. While there might be a market for Hammer, what about for Montador? Do they hawks want to move him, if they do, is there even a market for him?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

I dont believe there is a market for him unless hes part of a bigger package...EVERYONE in hockey that I talked with last summer and since has said he's way overpaid..prob by about a mil...the most anyone told me they had him on their board for is 2 mil..hes at 2.7. So doubtful he can be moved with 3 yrs left and missing as much as he did in 2nd half on top of it

David E (Ridgefield, CT)

Which Hawks have stayed and enjoyed the Chicago summer?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:22 PM)

No exactly positive..been back and forth..I know sharp was here after the worlds...ben smith is here..toews was at the meetings this week but he said he's been fishin in canada..more ex-hawks..brouwer, campbell getting married this week..but in general they come and go throughout

rab (chicago)

If you could name one 'star" player that would be most likely to be traded for or sign with the Hawks this season who would it be ?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

Im sure IM missing plenty cause the hawks fly under the radar better than most if not all but Suter would be the guy...there is no doubt he has interest...doesnt mean there isnt more but thats hte biggest name I keep hearing

Joe (Chicago)

With the new salary cap does that mean the hawks have about 8 million to play with and already have an entire team under contract?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:24 PM)

Yes, basically thats right...but a bunch are on two way deals and can be sent to the minors etc.

Mike (Valparaiso, IN) [via mobile]

Is Stan ever going to pull the trigger on a trade? All these second line centers are getting moved at the trade deadline and draft, and the Hawks say things didn't pan out. Stan running out of time in Chicago?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:26 PM)

Its a good question...and it starts with if Bowman is as concerned with 2nd line center as the rest of us and other hockey people as well...I know he'd take a good one but man, it seems like has to fall into his lap...I asked about ribiero as the draft...5 mil for one season, that could work..he wouldnt get specific of course...I think its a fair question about his ability to trade...I hope he would understand that people would question if he can be bold until he really is..so we'll see...Ill answer another questioin and give the other side soon

Tim (Wicker Park)

Assuming trades are made, do you think Olsen is ready to be a regular on the third D pairing? I love his size, but other than that, what are you thoughts on him?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:27 PM)

I think he's ready or near ready...if Leddy can be solid and we can stop thinking of him as really young then its easier to swallow a second young D-man...you just dont want Olsen AND leddy going through growing pains..huge yr for leddy coming up..he started out on fire last year..thats expected...now he has to do it for 82+

Tony Perkis (Fat Camp)

Jesse, I hear there's a lot of teams interested in Steve Ott. Think the hawks are on that list? I believe he has the ability to play center (maybe not for the second line but perhaps). Thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:29 PM)

On this one I have to plead ignorance...I just dont know..maybe hes an under the radar guy they are working on...with the cap rising his 3 mil hit isnt so bad for 2 more years...Im not sure hes the REAL ansswer at 2nd line though..I like him but dont love him...I wouldnt be surprised if Hawks kicked the tires but that might be it

Paul (Shorewood)

There are rumors that Hawks might get Sam Gagner from Oilers for Niklas Hjalmarsson...any truth to that? I like this deal a lot if it goes thru, don't you? Again, IF.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:31 PM)

Dont know about the Gagner part...I can pretty much confirm the EDM part in terms of interest..the latest I heard is 4 teams are interested in hammer...EDM and Colorado are two of them...I dont know the other two..thats the latest..I think he could be traded in an hour or a day or a week but its coming

Mike (Lincoln Park)

How is Hossa... is there a possibility he decides to retire?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:32 PM)

I suppose if he doesnt get all the way back but there has been no indication of him doing anything but progressing..now I havent seen him or seen him work out or skate so until we see him do that..we just go off what we're told..progressing, no reason to believe anything else

Mike (Lincoln Park)

If you were offered Louongo and picks for Crow, Hammer & Monty would you take it?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:34 PM)

Hmmm...I doubt it...he could really be set up to fail here with his history and then you have thay contract...if hes not bad now he could be in a few years so seems like a headache...and heck, Ive seen him up close and personal at his worst too many times to advocate going for him...why take that kind of risk for so long with so much at stake

Mike (Glenview)

Hey Jessie,What role will Andrew Shaw play if any going forward for the Hawks? I liked what I saw from him last season, will he be a fixture on this team?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:35 PM)

I think a big role...He will kill penalties for sure next season..assume he'll be a third line guy but you never know as things progress...but yeah Q loves him so he'll get the ice time

Phil (Chicago)

With the core of this team set up to win now wouldn't it makes more sense to trade some of these young players we seem to be stockpiling to get some depth on this team and go for another cup? or are the Hawks prospects just not that good? I just don't see this team as a contender without some added quality depth

Jesse Rogers
  (2:36 PM)

I would agree..Thats where being bold comes in...Im the one that said throw Saad in for Staal early on in summer so you know how I feel..I think starting with Saad esepcailly hawks prospects are pretty good..certainly no worse than most teams so Im wth you...not just for depth but as aprt of a package for a star even

Feff (MeatLand, ON)

Jesse, are you concerned that if the Hawks don't trade Hjalmarsson at this point, he will be upset or unmotivated knowing the Hawks shopped him around the league?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:37 PM)

You never know...but if it comes to it they can always spint it to him/agent..."Hey tons of teams wanted you and we said no way in the end" etc. etc. Its not like he outright stinks so they can turn it around..I dont think thats an issue

Jim (Wauconda)

Other than purging cap room, which I understand Bowman had to do, what has he done to improve the talent on the Hawks

Jesse Rogers
  (2:40 PM)

Its a good question..he acquired Leddy..thats more talent than the guy that was traded for him (Cam Barker)....he drafted Shaw...shaw seems like a guy that could have played on the cup team if there was an opening no? he drafted Saad..remains to be seen but all indications are this guy is talented..he acquired Oduya...pretty good when compared to others..and in re-signing him with brunette, odonnell etc money thats an improvement..so there are cases but that 2nd line center has eluded him and help on point on pp has as well...remember he re-signed all the stars..just giving ou a fair account not defending him...believe me Ive been a critic too

Steve (New Orleans)

Have you heard anything on the Bobby Ryan front? I think he'd be the best possible addition the team could make this off-season.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:40 PM)

Not happeneing...philly almost for sure

Dan (Northbrook)

With Wideman landing 5m per year (average) what do you think Weber and Suter will get?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:41 PM)

Suter in cap range of 6 mil..Weber in 7 mil or more range...gotta be less than crosby right? :)

Mike (Lincoln Park)

Do you think Stan would rather have Suter or Parise?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:42 PM)

Ill tell you who I would rather have kind of in a vaccumm meaning without really looking at the roster....its Parise...Suter is not a 10 out of 10 of defensean..hes just is of the avail ones...suter is like a 7..weber is a 10...parise is closer to 10 than suter, in my opinion

Tim (La Grange Park)

Stan Bowman seems incapable of making a bold move. If he continues in this direction (which seems likely), he will stay and one of the better coaches in the NHL, Quenneville will probably go unless the Hawks have a terrific season. Your thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:47 PM)

Ok, so here is the other side which defends bowman: take the same team. which they have right now in the sense everyone thats on the roster was there at some point last year...you do subtract odonnell and brunette and lepisto..anyone have a prob with that? Add Shaw, hayes and oduya for a whole season and lets assume Carcillo for a whole season...now it IS NOT out of the realm of possibility special teams would be better JUST BASED ON A NEW YEAR...we know they have the talent for it...NOW ADD the fact that they'll have a new asst coach, a re-energeized and kind of pissed off head coach and special teams could be really "decent" at least..Add that ther is plenty of evidence that 2nd year goaltenders who slump come out of it in their 3rd year AND there is no obvious flaw in crawford i.e he's small like turco..there is the other side of the coin. got it? you cant say its not possible in a reasonable sort of way..only asking ofr special teams to jump 5-1- spots not be the best

Jesse Rogers
  (2:48 PM)

5-10 spots for special teams

Pat (Chicago)

Is there any substance to the rumors of Toews lobbying Doan to join the Hawks? What is the likelihood of the front office coming pursuing let alone signing him?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:49 PM)

That was just fun talk at the NHLPA meetings..toews and doan were together for 3 days...but it wasnt like the 2 went to bowman's office together to hash out a contract

Curt (Chicago)

JR,We still have some holes on this team... still need a big #2 center, and we still need a second big physical defenseman. By signing a full roster early, do you think Stan has given himself a greater ability to make good hockey moves? If the Hawks don't pull the trigger to fill one of those two holes, will we see a new GM soon?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:51 PM)

See my last post...I dont think so...he can claim no team is perfect but the hawks had 101 points without those changes for a full season...I absolutely think he has less on his plate so sure, he can concentrate more on making a great hockey trade

Seve (NY)

Kuc tweeted a picture of your son (I believe) yesterday with JT. Awesome for him. Is he a fan of the Hawks?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:52 PM)

Actually the NHLPA tweeted that out to 100,000 or something then we retweeted it...My son is a fan..he came to the meetings yesterday just to hang out in the background and got to meet toews as he was leaving...was cool...and of course toews made fum of me to him..par for the course..

Charlie (Chicago)

Hey Jesse, can you explain to me how the long-term contracts/cap hit works? Like with the Kovalchuk deal years ago, Crosby, etc. How do teams "beat the cap" by those long-term contracts? I never understood that.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:56 PM)

Its pretty simple...they want to pay these stars as much as they can...but to give a 100 million over 5 years means a 20 mil cap hit...the cap hit is always the avg of the entire contract...he doesnt need more than 100 mil and isnt going to be traded or sign as a free agent so the player doesnt care...they like stability so they spread it out over many years...some might retire before the end of the deal..that reduces the avg cap hit..what the player is actually PAID from year to year can be anything they negotiate..most like more money sooner so thats what the player gets out of it...this yr in partiaulr signing bonuses which come off the total package are going to be big in case of a lockout...I believe they get that bonus within a week of signing the contract..its all designed to lessen the year to year hit

Dan (Northbrook)

Were the meetings in Chicago open to every player? I'm surprised more players don't take a vested in their financial futures...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:57 PM)

yes, open to every player..56 out of 700..I guess that doesnt sound like much..but many are overseas and this isnt like the only meeting so how many voices do you need? this is donald fehr..he knows what hes doing

Paul (Oakville, Canada)

Based on what I'm seeing and hearing...Hawks are not going to upgrade thier goaltending. Huge mistake. Look at Nashville, Pheonix, LA, Vancouver in the west..Crawford can't compete with these elite goalies even if he has a bounce back year...and no matter how great Hawks are up front...Goaltending gets you deep into playoffs and gives you a chance to win the cup. Big mistake in my book. Any rumors on goaltending upgrades, offer sheets, etc...?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:59 PM)

No offer sheets and other than maybe interest in thomas if he wanted to play, nothing else...I disagree with you though..just one yr ago he OUTPLAYED luongo in the playoffs...why cant he get back to that level? again, whats his obvious flaw..looking at glass half full we can say he got paid, got the job full time, played a full season all for the first time last year..now more comfortable...its possible

Paul (Shorewood)

I know everyone keeps saying Michael Frolik won't be traded because no one wants his cap hit. But realistically, is there a chance he will be traded to a team that needs his cap to be above the minimum? Or am I still dreaming..

Jesse Rogers
  (3:01 PM)

I think its possible but not probable unless part of a bigger deal...a team could convince themselves the hawks werent using him correctly or he had a flukish bad yearor they'll look at his years in fla and make a case..it is possible now that the floor is 54 mil which is pretty high

Michael (Milwaukee)

Hypothetically if the Hawks trade Hammer and land Suter, how would you see the defensive pairings shake out?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:02 PM)

Thats a fun and good question...I would love to see keith take a almost dimished role def in terms of minutes and maybe even pairings...seab/suter, keith/oduya or hammer, leddy/hammer or oduya...if monty there he is 7 if olsen then he is 7...something like that but plenty of combos

Jason (chi)

Based on the NHLPA meetings the past couple of days, what is the likelihood of the season starting in October? In your opinion that is.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:04 PM)

Ive always thought it was good cause there is only one big issue...splitting up the pie...cap is in place..guranteed contracts are in place..the meetings this week didnt tell the story either way...at worst I think its a short stoppage if any...maybe im optimistic...no way more than 2 months..

Bob (Highland Park)

What do you think Hayes' role will be this year? Do you think he can be a top six forward?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:06 PM)

I doubt it but you never pigeon hole young players..carcillo is top 6...hossa, toews, kane, sharp, assume stalberg...so hayes starts on the 4th ....BUT can he move up ? for sure..stalberg could struggle we know..and so could carcillo..but right now, big body 4th line if he breaks camp..no sure thing

Jay (W. Dundee)

It's reported Olli Jokinen won't be returning to Calgary. Is he a fit?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:06 PM)

I thought maybe midseason but i dont think he is a fit here now

Pat (Crystal Lake)

I follow anything and everything about the NHL. And everything I read and see never involves the Hawks in any talks. I know we here the Hawks would like this person or that person. But are we dealing with a GM in Bowman who is affraid to make moves, or do teams and agents just not like dealing with him?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:09 PM)

Two things..the hawks keep things VERY quiet..more than most and they ask opposing teams to do the same...however, there might be something to your theory..Bowman is not part of the old boys network even if his dad is...there are some veteran GM's that can work their wat around the legaue--not saying bowman doesnt get a long with them but sometimes easier to deal with people you are more familiar with...of course...chevy, tallon, bergevin out there so thats good too...and the longer he is in the job the better but you may not be wrong..

Mike (Lincoln Park)

In your opinion what would have to happen for Crow not to start next season?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:10 PM)

Something would have to fall into their lap like Thomas wanting back and to be traded here

Ryan (Bartlett)

When do you see the Free Agent signings start to heat up?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:10 PM)

On Sunday..when they are allowed to.

DC (Rochelle)

Do you agree the Hawks really got sucked by San Jose' bid on Hammer causing the Hawks to commit $ there and lose Niemi?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:11 PM)

Bascially yes, They were shocked that happened..and I believe its the last offer sheet in the NHL.. they just dont happen...

Alex (Anaheim)

I know the circus is the reason for Chicago's long road trip each year, but will Black Friday feature Blackhawks at Ducks in perpetuity?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:12 PM)

Only if Circus trip is the same..seems they have a similiar thing every year but at least this years trip is shorter in terms of days etc

Andrew (Chicago)

So a run at Weber may not be the best option as this point. So it comes down to Suter or Garrison. Thing is, don't you think Garrison might be a risk? Could have had a flukey season and even then he doesn't add much size. Just getting the same kind of defensemen we already have with a better shot.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:13 PM)

Yeah, its not JUST suter or garrisson and yeah the latter isnt a sure thing but will cost less too...Again, I;ve heard a few names but not sure which ones are real but I know those 2 are so we'll see but they are diff players and talent levels

Paul (Chicago)

Jesse, will we see any movement by the Hawks prior to July 1 to open up some cap space to make a serious run at Suter and/or another impact player.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:14 PM)

I think they are trying..I thought hammer would be traded before july 1 and he still might but we only have a couple days left..may not matter now that the cap is at 70 mil but its preferable..so again, we'll see..maybe waiting till last min for best deal

Jason (Deerfield)

How does it work for Morrisson being player elected by NHLPA if he become UFA in the next few days??

Jesse Rogers
  (3:15 PM)

I dont think its a big deal..hes still part of the union and obviously isnt retiring...they arent representing their teams just the entire union

joshua (elgin)

I think after this next year either Q or Bowman are gone unless they win the cup. Since Q got his way and more control...my guess Q is done after this year. Agree or disagree?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:16 PM)

Cup or gone might be too strong but yes, it seems this is a make or break year in a lot of ways..but we have to see HOW it plays out before we can make a bold prediciton like that...but a guess would be Q would be the next move , maybe midseason if things go south (again)

Erik (SF, CA)

Jesse, they don't NEED to move anyone right now. Teams can spend up to 10% over cap during the summer, just have to be at/below 70.2 when the season starts.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:18 PM)

No one said they did but what if they want to sign parise and suter and another guy...then they might...but just suter? no...but they will still want to shed and shedding when other teams KNOW you have to means getting less..shedding now means getting more..just look at 2010 for evidence

Jim (New York)

Are you still high on Bolland? We loved him because of his work in the playoffs - specifically the Sedins, but is that still enough worth keeping him? I don't think so.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:20 PM)

Its not a yes or no question....can you max him out in a trade? Then I would...he can be replaced, MIGHT have peaked as a player and has some injury history...thats kind of making a case against...you can be safe to say he's not going to burst into this offensive machine who also plays good defense..but hes still valuable as heck which means he might be as trade bait as well..of course I believe in kruger taking his spot so thats why I say you explore it and I believe they did with staal

Matt (Gurnee)

Should the Hawks go after Jason Garrison? I'm kind of wary of him since he had Brian Campbell setting him up in Florida. We don't have anyone that can do that for him here.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:21 PM)

I like him..sometimes you have to make a leap of faith...hes not going from 700k to 5 mil so should be manageable but he's 2nd or 3rd options

Cody (Coal Valley, IL)

Do you think Bowman isn't as concerned about the second line center because we have guys like pirri and mcneil already in the system and they could be the eventual answer?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:22 PM)

Honestly? I think hes (maybe acting) like he's not concerned with it because he hasnt found one or fixed it so hes focusing elsewhere or trying to get our attention elsewhere..but he does like those guys

Adam (Chicago)

A gentemans agreement between teams not to do offer sheets sounds like collusion. I would think that the NHLPA would look into that.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:22 PM)

I wish they would...why have the rule

Jesse Rogers
  (3:22 PM)

that will come up for sure in CBA I would think

Matt (Lincoln Park)

Name the top three overpaid and underpaid guys on the 'Hawks.

Jesse Rogers
  (3:24 PM)

hmm..Monty, maybe hammer but thats kind of the going rate, was brunette....underpaid gotta be stalberg based on last year, under a mill...I mean for what shaw did, him for sure....and, toews.

Paul (Shorewood)

If Hawks don't want Montador and Frolik's contract, why don't they send them down like Olesz to use that money signing someone else? How does that work?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:26 PM)

They have to clear waivers which means anyone can take them for nothing which you might like as well..but thats paying (again) a lot of money to play in the minors...2.7 plus 2.3...and they are serviceable to some extent...cant bury everyone

Jim (Chicago) [via mobile]

To manage the entire roster, it seems Bowman needs to trade some forward prospects for one quality upgrade. When you start filling out the roster, you've got saad, Ben smith, shaw, Hayes, bollig, Carcillo, and several others fighting for 2-3 spots. What trade would you suggest where we can trade 2-3 prospects for one up and coming player. To me, that's a trade for a guy like Evander Kane. What's your thought??

Jesse Rogers
  (3:28 PM)

thats a tough one...a lot of moving parts...no one says those young guys cant start in minors..there are injuries..maybe saad isnt really ready...hayes gets beat out..who knows...but yes, that would be a nice trade...people are going to ask for --they already have--saad so be ready for a lot of no's unless hes involved

jake (chicago)

I still think there is a power play between Bowman & Q...and Q won this years battle ...so it seems Bowman will just sit back and do very little this off season so Q will fail next year...then Bowman will bring in his own guy and have full control...Tell me Im wrong?

Jesse Rogers
  (3:29 PM)

I have more respect for bowman as a person than that..NOw, he can certainly convince himself and his bosses of the things I said earlier..full seasons for odyua, shaw, etc. rebound for craw and special teams will be better (thats Q's job) and if it fails maybe he will point to Q but I dont think its a plan--at least not by the younger Bowman. :)

Matt (Lincoln Park)

Jesse, this is more of a psychology question. What's your take on Bowman, given his attitudes and demeanor? Do you really think he's afraid to pull a trigger on a big trade, or is he more of a sly, calculating type? If nothing else he's seen a good hockey mind operate pretty much his whole life.
