Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Welcome to the fastest hour in golf!He did it again. But with no majors to show for the 3 wins, do you think Tiger is back?

Tommy Gainey (2 GLOVES)

How is it possible for a tour player to shoot an 86 with 6 doubles?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

Go check out Stewart Cink's opening round at TPC Scottsdale this year and he's a major winner. It's golf and when things go bad... they can go BAAAAAD! But a pro will always come back.

Dan (Kansas City)

What's up with Gary Woodland? Do you see him in the WGR top 50 by the end of the year? Will he be at the Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

He was hurt earlier this year and i think he's been playing thru some injuries which is a mistake. He is also working with Butch Harmon now and trying to play a cut which is not what used to play so he having a "growing pain" period in golf right now.

'Son Tils (DC)

Odds that Tiger wins one of the year's 2 remaining majors? I'm going with 2:1

Michael Collins
  (3:05 PM)

It's gotta be higher than that because both the next two majors are gonna depend more on weather and tee times than game. You could be playing your best coming in but if you get the bad end of the draw you're screwed.I'd have Tiger at about 5 or 6/1 until I saw his tee times for the Open.

C-Gives (Auburn)

My Fiance, Cason, and I are big Bo Van Pelt fans. Why can't he seem to close? He's been right there all year.

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Just goes to show how hard it is to win on tour. And how good the courses are they play on. Remember earlier this year when guys were blowing 6 shot leads on Sundays... it's the nature of the game. Don't worry about Bo though... he's got some tough in him.

OOO DOWNSTAIRS HOOTS (LEX)

Guy, How crispy was Tiger's approach on 18 yesterday. The way he walked to the green after he hit it gave me a bit of goosebumps.

Andy (Huntington, WV)

Will Tiger need to hit driver very much at the British?

Ty Schrupp (Coon Rapids, MN)

Chances that Tiger wins the British Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:08 PM)

He could play all four rounds without hitting driver at all and his chances would still be the same.Until we see the weather compared to his tee times I'd say between 5-6/1

Andy (Huntington, WV)

Is it just me, or does Tiger face higher expectations than ever before now? He can't satisfy people, no matter what.

SONS TILS (DC)

MC, will you please tell the Tiger haters who keep using a "weak field" excuse every time he wins to put a sock in it.

Andy (Huntington, WV)

Assuming Woods does break Jack's record, where do you think he does the most damage? Personally, I believe you have to think he'll win AT LEAST one more Green Jacket. I also think he'll get AT LEAST one more jug. He's done a ton of damage at the PGA too, though.

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

I think the majority of his wins will come at the Masters. But I'd say the PGA Champ will have a few venues that may suit him.

mike (Camden, SC )

Do you think tiger cares about winning events like yesterday or just the majors?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

I posed that question to my editor last night and we disagree. I say now, even though Tiger says it's about majors publicly, I think these wins matter.

Stees (DC)

Were you in DC covering this event? if so where were you when the storm hit?

Michael Collins
  (3:12 PM)

No, Farrell was there. I was trying to stay afloat in FL!

Andy (Huntington, WV)

This isn't an original idea or anything, but the comparisons between Tiger and Michael Jordan keep getting more and more striking in my opinion. Tiger seems to relish silencing his critics, just like Jordan. It seems like all the criticism has motivated him, just like Jordan. Further, it seems like he's going to have a great "second act" to his career, just like Jordan.

Michael Collins
  (3:14 PM)

I just hope he doesn't go for that "third act" like Jordan tried in Washington. At least we know Tiger ain't playing baseball, and he's too old to "try out" for the Army Special Forces!

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Will Tiger have to win another major, or a tournament not run by him, or his idols/legends, for the doubters to finally stop hating? Does he take the British Open?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Won't matter. Those that hate him, hate him no matter what he does. It's a little creepy how irrational hatred can make people.

SONS TILS (DC)

are there any vids out there of your stand up?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Nope, made sure of that a long time ago!

Shoshana (Boston)

People feeling real smart right about now, Joe Lacava. Not so much, maybe Stevie. Bet Adam starts getting wake-up calls

Michael Collins
  (3:17 PM)

But who knows if Stevie and Tiger would've stayed together if Tiger would've won.

jack columbus [via mobile]

Would you rather battle de jonge on sunday or trevino? jack would win at least 30 majors today (thats not a fantasy he has 19 runnerups against far better players)

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

I'd take this tour overall against any past tour era you want to go head to head against.

TO (Chicago)

Tiger is such a perfectionist. And now you can see the fruits of his labor as his ball striking is superb. However, outside of around 2000, why does he have such a hard time driving the golf ball? There are a lot of guys that average farther off the tee but also hit more fairways.

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

He's actually been hitting it the best he's hit it off the tee in years, it's just the past couple weeks he sprayed it a bit, but he's not having those 40 yard misses off the tee like we used to see and that's a good thing.

Pat (tampa)

straight up do you think tiger will win a major this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

The British will be a better chance than Kiawah. I'll say no he doesn't win a major this year.

DW (Richmond, VA)

When will DJ hold things together for for consecutive rounds?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

there's 138 guys trying to figure that out every week too. And people are surprised when they find out golfer have sports psychologists!

Brian (Sacramento, CA)

Must Tiger win either the British Open or the PGA Championship this year for Player of the Year honors and to silence the critics that he is back or would winning 5 or 6 PGA Tour events be sufficient?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

If he's the only guy to win three tourneys, wins the money title and finishes top five in FedEx... I'd say he's a pretty strong lock even without a major

DW (Richmond, VA)

Also, what happened to Sergio Garcia not playing in the Greenbrier this week? He was listed in the field and then it was updated to not include him.

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

I never saw Sergio in the original field list and the updated list doesn't have him scratched off, they don't even have him on. Will have to dig. Email later and remind me.

wale from chicago [via mobile]

hey mike do you see any changes the way tiger interract with the field between old tiger and this media proclaim new tiger , its seems to me hes more cracking jokes and talking much

Michael Collins
  (3:27 PM)

Tiger is the same fun guy with the players he's always been. He does do more with the fans now than he did before and that's a good thing to see.

terry (bahamas)

whats tiger chances at the greenbrier

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Very good, but he's gonna have to play conservative for the first two rounds.

Jeff (Hoboken, NJ)

Michael, what part of the pros' games will be tested the most at this British Open venue? Will Lytham yield double digits under par?

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

Ball striking with the irons.

Andy (Huntington, WV)

Doesn't Tiger play a pretty soft ball compared to other big hitters and he can still blow it 340 when he wants to? I don't buy all the "smarter/craftier/lost a gear" angles when it comes to Tiger. I actually think he's hitting it longer now than he has in 5-6 years. He hit a 198 yard 9 iron yesturday!!!

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

Well the 9 iron was hooded and hooked... but Tiger does have an extra gear he can go to but he's trying to control the ball instead of overpower it. I don't think his golf balls are a higher spin rate than say the Titleist Pro V1

Scott (Dayton, OH)

When will you stop picking Luke Donald to win every major?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

There have been two majors, I picked him to win one. When will you stop saying things that make you look dumber than me?

Ari (Dracut) [via mobile]

Kiawah is going to play at 7800 yards..does that give longer or more accurate drivers of the golf ball an advantage?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Big time, but if it's playing really firm, than shorter guys can hang too

Shoshana (Boston)

You covering Greenbreir? And do you have a place to stay? Heard there were some logistical issues

Michael Collins
  (3:37 PM)

I am not going, but finding housing there has been a nightmare since the tournament first started, volunteers are having to stay an hour away in VA.

Pat (tampa)

who do you think will win a major first, fowler or westwood?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Fowler.

Bob (Seattle)

Would an average PGA tour golfer rather play in a "Tiger crowd" with 10K+ or in a "Bo Van Pelt" crowd of, say, 3.

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

Tiger crowd. Most guys feed of the energy.

jack [via mobile]

Tws best 4 opponents won only 12 majors jacks won 30! proof he had tougher opponents! would mj rather battle kobe and scotty or a bunch of College all americans?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

Which tells me instead of having to beat 6 guys, nowadays you have to beat 140. You just made the argument against yourself... NICE!!

TO (Chicago)

I can't remember which commentator said it, but it basically boiled down to saying Van Pelt will not try to hole his shot from right off the fringe. Instead, he'll just try to cozy it up there to make sure he gets 2nd all his own to get the bigger check. Van Pelt knocked it by quite a bit as it looked like he tried to hole it (not to mention he had a pretty good lead on 2nd place). Do these guys think that way a lot of the time? I'm sure a journeyman does but would think the majority don't.

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

Van Pelt was trying to make. In his situation and knowing Bo, he wanted to win, he figures he can make plenty enough over the year to keep his card. But there are some guys who would've played for second.

Mo (VA)

Do you think the level of conditioning that players go through these days helped them fight through the extreme temps and humidity this past week?

Michael Collins
  (3:43 PM)

Big time, and now guys are taking electrlytes in pill and powder form to help stay hydrated and not drinking soda or iced tea like back in the day.

Shoshana (Boston)

Next step for Tiger is consistency. Hasn't had back to back top 10's on PGA Tour since '09. Think that would be a good result for him this week

Benjamin (New York)

Tiger's win yesterday was very important for the majors, as he solidified the short game that abandoned him when his ball striking was a bit off on the weekend at Olympic. Even with his new efficient swing, he'll never hit the ball pure all four days (no one does), so he needs the short game to fall back on. He did that this week, where his ball striking was actually subpar for him.

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Saturday... 25 putts was huge.

Son Tils (DC)

jack columbus - the fact that fewer guys won all the majors means that the field was weaker back then. you are so dumb.

jack [via mobile]

De jonge? van pelt? couldnt play nationwide in jacks day

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

Look there's nothing anyone can say that would convince you even though Nicklaus himself has said the fields now are stronger than when he played. Let it go dude. You'll never relive your high school glory days, you're just gonna have to move on. Sorry.

Pat (tampa)

since tiger donated his winnings to charity yesterday does joe lacava still get paid?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

where did you see that Tiger donated all his winnings to charity? And Joe would still get his cut.

Eric (Cleveland, OH)

Realistically how long does Anthony Kim have to get back from health issues and retain his card? I assume he has some type of medical exemption at least for the time being, but what is his overall time frame to being a productive and card carrying PGA tour member?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

he can take as long as he wants as long as a doctor says he is not ready to compete. Hank Kuehne is playing on a medical exemption from YEARS ago.

Son Tils (DC)

jack - stop with the revisionist history. jack beat his share of no namers in his day as well. the runner-up at the 1963 pga was dave ragan.......

timmy (SLC)

How much is Lacava making from these victories? Hes got to be loving this.

Michael Collins
  (3:52 PM)

don't know for sure but standard is ten percent... that's just over $110,000 for last week.

Shoshana (Boston)

Tiger always donates all his winning's to charities at events that benefit his foundation, has for years (and yes did it for ATT this year too)

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Thank you for the heads up.

paul (dyt)

tiger mentioned in his press conference last night that he was giving his earnings to his charity

Pat (tampa)

because it was tiger's event he said in his press conference that he always donates his winnings that week to the community. I was thinking joe would still get paid but was not sure. Thanks Michael

John S (Naples)

Tiger always donates his winnings at this tournament to his Foundation.

TWdamu (New York)

Rickie Fowler finally had a taste of Tiger at the Memorial. McIlroy learned that his game was smoke and mirrors when he played with TW at Abu Dhabi. These "young guns" are now learning to appreciate all that TW is.

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

Well don't forget Rory did fight off a Tiger charge at Honda, but I see where you're going. And yeah maybe with one more win, Tiger can put some fear in these youngsters too. But...

Andrew (WI)

I think the 2nd-through-10th best players in a 1960's field may be stronger than a 2nd-through-10th best in 2012, but the 11-through-100 of the 2012 field is so ridiculously deeper than in the 60's. It makes today's fields the tougher fields.

Cody (Nebraska) [via mobile]

Nice call on the tiger win last week! What do you think of tigers driving game as I late?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Thanks. His driving could be a little better but right now it's good enough.

Mike (AZ)

Rory- O/U 6 Majors?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Right now... under

Alex (London)

Hi Michael. Love your stuff! Who's the next English player to win a major? Donald, Westwood, Rose or the field?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

Field. And thank you

paul (dyt)

you mentioned guys taking electroylytes in pill/powder form, do you recommend any in particular?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

When I'm caddying or doing play by play I use HyLytes.

Steve (Mars)

Rory has 3 career PGA wins, Tiger has 3 in his last 7 starts.I hope people on the Rory bandwagon can cool it for a while now.

Shoshana (Boston)

What are the keys to success at Greenbreir?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Patience and Fairways.

Mike (AZ)

Tiger- O/U caddies for rest of career - 1.5? Swing coaches- 1.5?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Under on both

Nick (Ob)

Electrolytes? Pickle juice all the way.

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

You must've played football!

Matthew (Glen Allen, VA)

For those making arguments that competition is easier now, you are totally off base/ have never played high level competitive golf. There are so many good players out there now with much greater tournament experience. Example, see the AJGA, PJGT, IJGT, and a litany of other junior tours (not to mention high school and college golf). Better prepared players with better equipment, and with better coaching equates to stronger fields.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

HOLY COW!!! You guys are awesome today!! That was WAY too fast.Next Monday, same bat time, same bat channel!Email me ESPNCaddie@gmail.com@ESPNCaddie on twitterI will write back. Thanks everyone!
