Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Check out out Turn 4 answers today to these hot questions: Should wins be taken away if a car is found illegal? Is Bruton right about having mandatory cautions. Where is Kenseth headed and can he still win the 2012 title as a lame duck? http://tinyurl.com/dx42ng4

Jamerson (Georgia)

Got a pick to win for this weekend? Or do you think the racing will be too crazy to predict a winner?

Terry Blount
  (2:00 PM)

Always tough to predict a winner at a plate race, but I'll go with Dale Jr.

Andrew (NJ)

What are Paul Menard's chances for a win (or at least top 5) this weekend? He's been 9th, 7th and 6th at Daytona since joining RCR.

Terry Blount
  (2:01 PM)

Better than they are almost anyplace else, but they same is true for almost any driver in a plate race.

Joanne (Ft. Meyers)

Kyle has run no truck races and maybe one or 2 NW races. Will he begin to run those to cement the "total nascar wins" title that seems to be important to him? Running Cup only will not get him there. Thanks.

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Kyle's priority is winning a Cup title, not the meaningless wins total by running up victories in the minors.

Matthew (Columbia, NJ)

Terry: Do you expect several big ones this weekend at Daytona?

Terry Blount
  (2:03 PM)

Not several, but maybe one or two.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

What do you think will be the last Sprint Cup Series Race for Danica Patrick in 2012?

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

I thought it would be Indy. Seemed like a no-brainer. But it's getting a little late to announce that now.

Drew (Indy)

Terry, would you agree that IndyCar fans' and media's desires for Danica, Marco, Graham et al. to become regular winners has caused them to overlook Ryan Hunter-Reay's successes? RHR easily is the best American driver in IndyCar and has been for five years.

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

I don't think they are overlookinmg his success, but yes, they would love to see Marco and Graham win more often because it would bring more attention to the series with their name recognition.

Saul (San Diego)

Give me the Cliff Notes Version of why is Matt Kenneth leaving Roush?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

You mean other than money? He wants a fresh start and JGR is offering a better long-term deal. And Roush still doesn't have full sponsorship for the 17.

Saul (San Diego)

What would happen to Bruton, if Dale Jr is leading with a few laps go and Bruton calls a mandatory Caution.

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

He would need more body guards than he has now.

Dwane (ky)

is matt kenneth reallly going to joe gibbs? or is he going to another team for next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

Over 90 percent likely it's Gibbs.

Dwane (ky)

what is the latest driver moves for next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:10 PM)

We talked abotu this in Turn 4 today. It's a little like asking when Mt. St Helens will blow its top again. But everyone is wondering about Logano. It appears JGR is trying to line up sponsorship to keep him in a fourth car. No one really knows right now, including Joey.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

Is there any truth to rumor that Andretti Autosport coming to Sprint Cup Series in 2013?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

It's possibly. Michael wants to do it if the sponsorship is in place and Dodge is willing to write him and big fat check.

Jamerson (Georgia)

Will Stenhouse be driving #17 in Cup next year, or will they bring back the #6 in Cup?

Terry Blount
  (2:12 PM)

Jack Roush said at Kentucky it probably will be the 17.

Jeff (SC)

I would lower my car once every few races to get the win and be docked 6 points. Winner gets over 40 points. Seems like guys looking to get in chas may wanna give this a try

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

The problem with that theory is the penalty would increase every week because of repeat violations, so it wouldn't work that way.

Saul (San Diego)

Do you think this is the last Hooah year that we will see military sponsorship on the hood of cup cars?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

I think it's still TBA. My opinion is this: As long as the country doesn't have a draft, the military needs to advertise to help recruiting.

Lee (Ohio) [via mobile]

Who gets the 3 in cup Austin or Ty?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Austin

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

Hey Terry, Is possible that Kenseth is taking sponsors with him to JGR?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

Maybe, but he doesn't have a lot to take.

Rob (GA)

how come rcr doesnt switch over to dodge? it would be a real gutsy move but what could hurt given their subpar performance over the last decade and always running second fiddle to hendrick

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Not gonna happen. Richard is Chevy royalty. However, the Chevy team that should switch is Ganassi.

Saul (San Diego)

Your top three picks for the Coke 400?

Terry Blount
  (2:17 PM)

Dale Jr., Edwards and I'll go out on a limb and say Kurt Busch.

James (Milford, CT)

Do you reward E. Sadler with a Sprint ride or move Austin up first?

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

The Dillon boys have those slots wrapped up in the future.

Jay (Ga)

Do you think Roush would sign someone outside of the Roush Family, like a Newman or Vickers if that's who sponsors wanted?

Terry Blount
  (2:19 PM)

Roush tends to stay in the family. Stenhouse goes to the 17 and Bayne probably to the 6 in 2014.

Greg (North Carolina)

Why isn't anybody thinking Kenseth will go to SHR? Newman's on the way out there, right?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Because all the talk in the garage is he already has a deal with JGR.

Dwane (ky)

is jeff burton going to keep his ride for next year? or is going to be with another team next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Looks like Jeff will be back in the 31 next year.

Ty (CA)

Do you think you will see a African American or woman crew chief in the next couple of years?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

I don't know of one on the immediate horizon, but I would love to see it.

Teri (North Hollywood, CA)

Matt is a smart man! I applaud him for stepping outside of his comfort zone for what could be a better opportunity. Is it true that Matt serves as his own agent?

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

Yes he does. Matt is old school and wants to keep it simple. But I'm sure he has attorneys look over all the paperwork.

casper (DC)

how come when i go to races, the merchandise haulers have a different selection of tshirts than what is available on the nascar superstore?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

No clue, but isn't it good to have more variety?

Lee (Ohio) [via mobile]

Please tell me NASCAR would never seriously consider mandatory cautions.

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

Highly unlikely.

Scott (Charlotte)

If you thought Andy Griffith was only a comedic actor rent "Face in a Crowd". Great performance

Terry Blount
  (2:25 PM)

Andy was a true American icon who will be greatly missed.

Teri (North Hollywood, CA)

I'd love to see Matt go on and win the championship for his team and Rousch ... then star in a few Home Depot commercials next year! ;-) Think that might happen?

Terry Blount
  (2:26 PM)

The Home Depot part, yes. The title, I'm not so sure. I'm not convinced they can do as a lame duck, but if anyone can, it's Matt because he is such a focused competitor.

Bobby (New York )

What do you make of Jack's comments saying that he could have focused his efforts differently to keep Matt? If I am Ricky or Trevor it has to make me wonder if my owner if doing everything he can to retain sponsorship.

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Jack never has been the go-to guy on contracts. He focuses on the technical side of things. In a way, that's good because you know your owner is doing everything he can to amke the cars fast.

Chris (Crestview, FL)

Who is sponsoring Stenhouse next year? And who is sponsoring T Bayne in NNS?

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

Still up in the air, although Jack said at Kentucky they are in good shape on the 17.

Mike (Vegas)

Danica Danica Danica...What about Jennifer Joe Cobb? Anychance of her ever getting a ride?

Terry Blount
  (2:29 PM)

Not much. but the woman who deserves a better ride is Johanna Long. She is really talented.

Saul (San Diego)

Is Stenhouse ready for to move up full time Cup Series?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

I believe he is. He's paid his dues and he's a skilled racer. I think he'll do a good job next year, but he won't be Kenseth right off the bat.

Tony (Sacramento)

Roush the owner didn't know? C'mon now, he had to know something otherwise someone else isn't doing their job correctly. Isn't this more about how much Matt was making?

Terry Blount
  (2:32 PM)

Sure that's part of it, but not all of it. However, Stenhouse is making around $250,000. Matt is making more than 20 times that much. Ricky will get a raise, of course, but this move still will save Jack and boatload of money.

jackie (Spring Lake NC)

Is it just me or are there just way to many uncompetitive cars in the Nationwide series

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

There's really only 15 cars that run every event, so yeah.

Ocho Cinco (Chevy Chase, MD)

Is AJ on borrowed time? Replacements?

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

I sense that Dinger is on shaky ground. He needs to pick it up in the second half of the season.

Jay (Ga)

Since BK Racing is sponsored by franchise owners of Burger King, they have sponsorship, does this become appealing to free agents such as Newman, Kurt busch, Vickers, and maybe Logano?

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

No, because it's not a big-money sponsorship even though it's a big-name company. However, some guys wil have to take what they can get. I think Vickers is headed to a fourth car at MWR.

Joe (Troy, NY)

IF (big if) it's JGR that has Kenseth signed to the new deal, why are they waiting to announce?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Because they are trying to work things out with Joey.

Saul (San Diego)

If you were NASCAR king for a day, Where would you build the next race track/its length?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

In the Seattle area and it would be a little less than a mile _ similar to Iowa or Richmond, with about 70,000 seats and luxury suites. And yes, I'm bias since I live here, but I also know it would be a huge success with a July or August event when the weather is awesome.

James (Indy)

Vickers has earned that spot. Which do you think is better for Nascar? The single car guys or the superteams?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

Single car team can't compete anymore. That ship has sailed.

Mark (Maryland)

Happy 4th Terry. Will the new car in 2013 create more side by side racing on the intermediate tracks????

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Happy 4th to you as well Mary. That's the hope. Everyone is waiting to see, and that's what they aren't going hog wild on changes this year. But I don't see it making a dramatic change without other changes to the cars because it's still the COT chassis.

Mack (Ga.)

Allgaier, pretender or contender?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Decent driver, but I don't see him as a title contender.

Jeremy (Port Angeles, WA)

Do you think Ryan Newman will return to Stewart Haas Racing in 2013?

Terry Blount
  (2:42 PM)

If I had to guess today, I'd say no. But that could change if they line up the sponsorship.

CD (Iowa)

Outside of the Dillon boys and Stenhouse, who is the next big time young driver?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

I'd say James Buescher. He raced Legends cars as a kid at TMS and has worked his way up. He's the real deal.

Roscoe (Cali)

Gordon has been my driver from day one. Chances of him making the Chase and what needs to change for him to improve next Year?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

His chances are way less than 50/50 now. He needs to win twice in the next nine races to have any shot. Not impossible, but not easy. That team has had an unsual amount of bad luck. They've run pretty well, although they blew it at Sonoma by running the car out of fuel.

Joe (Troy, NY)

How many wins will get someone the WC spot?

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Three is a guarantee, which is what Brad K is a lock now even if he falls outside the top 10.

Kevin (PA)

I know it is tough to predict, but who will have the best finish this weekend at Daytona of the #39, #31, #27 or the #9?

Terry Blount
  (2:47 PM)

Not exactly the Fantastic Four there, but I'll go with the 27.

Greg (North Carolina)

Do you think NASCAR would be better or worse if each team was limited to fielding one car for the season?

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

Worse because they wouldn't have enough cars. They're aren't 43 owners who have the money needed to race at the Cup level.

Ron (OH)

re: big time young drivers. Ryan Truex has looked very good.

Terry Blount
  (2:48 PM)

I agree Ron. He's a really skilled young racer who just needs more seat time.

Greg (South Bend, IN.)

How can Brad have the three wins, but be tenth in the standings? Are they going to change the points for a win?

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Not after last year when the top two guys tied in points and the champ was determined on wins. I've always felt the winner of a race deserved more points, but that is what's good about the wild card. It rewards winning and protects a guy in Brad's position. However, look how close NASCAR was to a bad situaion last year. Had Carl finished one spot better in any Chase race, he would have won the title without winning a playoff race while Tony won five of them.

jackie (Spring Lake NC)

Any chance of Johanna Long actually getting a better ride for next year

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

I hope so, but it's all about finding a sponsor willing to back her.

Roscoe (Cali)

From Jan 1 2010 until the end of their careers, who will ahve the most wins/championships, Brad or Kahne?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I'll say Brad on that one. Brad is a winner. All he cares about is winning and he's at his best when things get rough. Nothing against Kasey. I think he's finally hitting his stride and Hendrick after a slow start and will continue to improve. Wouldn't shock me a bit to see him win a title in the future.

Pete (MN)

Is there any chance of a Andretti Ganassi combo with Dodge next year?

Terry Blount
  (2:54 PM)

I don't think so. If anything, it might be Andretti and Petty in the Dodge camp.

Rich (CA)

Any chance Chip provides better cars or will McMurray look to leave? He can drive....

Terry Blount
  (2:56 PM)

He can look, but that doesn't mean there's a better place that wants him.

Matt (Virginia)

So Newman might be out at SHR unless sponsorship is found. Who else would they get? No other top 15 driver (besides Kenseth of course) is a free agent.

Terry Blount
  (2:57 PM)

If they don't have the sponsorship, no one. Danica will run full-time in Cup in 2013 with Go-Daddy as the sponsor.

Mike (MN)

Roush supposedly refers to Roush as the "Dark Side." Why?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

You mean he refers to Toyota as the dark side. It's Jack's feeling that Toyota will spend whatever it takes to get quality people from other teams. But it's baloney. They do the same thing the other manufacturers do on hiring. Jack also has a long-running feud with TRD prez Lee White. I joked that Lee should show up in a Darth Vader costume and JGR should change its team name to the Death Star.

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

Gotta run folks. Great chat today. I hope everyone has a wonderful Fourth of July. Be careful with those fireworks. Peace.
