Chat with Eric Karabell

Eric Karabell
  (10:54 AM)

Hello all and welcome to the latest fantasy sports chat session! I am Eric. Thanks for showing up! Rescheduled from Independence Day let's start early and get things started... As always if I don't get to your question I am on Twitter @karabellespn so feel free to find me there! OK, let's go!

Reader (ESPN.com)

Crawford's nearing a return (he says as he jinxs him; my bad). With Pedroia's status, do you believe he'll be put near the top of the order (more run and sb opportunities)? Or are we looking at another lost year with him in the 6-spot? Thanks

Eric Karabell
  (10:56 AM)

I don't really buy the notion that Crawford would steal significantly more bases because of lineup slot... but I also think Pedroia will play through the injury. I don't have a ton of confidence in Crawford, to be honest. I believe in Ellsbury, though.

Brett (Cary, N.C.)

Hey EK! In a 12 team mixed league with SO's and K/9 - would you rather hang on to Trevor Bauer or Andrew Cashner? Upside or injury?

Eric Karabell
  (10:57 AM)

I doubt either Bauer or Cashner help fantasy owners in July. Bauer would be headed back to the minors with another tough outing, and there's little reason to believe it won't be tough, while Cashner is probably out the rest of the month with his DL stint. It's hard to trust Cashner being durable enough to help anyone. I'd hang on to Bauer, though, for this season.

Mikey (Austin, TX)

Thoughts on Ryan Zimmerman ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (10:58 AM)

Obviously he's been terrific in the past week or so, or since the cortisone shot in his ailing shoulder, but what happens when the shoulder hurts again? It's been hurting for years, probably. I'd try to sell high. Not to be negative, but I think it's clear Zimmerman's shoulder is an issue. When healthy, as in the past week, he's been different.

Henry (NYC)

Will Jason Bay be useful in NL only in the second half?

Eric Karabell
  (10:59 AM)

I suppose anything is possible, but I wouldn't attach too many hopes to Bay. Again, durability is an issue. And it's not like he's Ryan Braun when healthy.

Carlos Lee (Milwaukee)

Does my fantasy value increase since I have been traded to Miami?

Eric Karabell
  (10:59 AM)

I blogged about this today and my gut tells me's 36 and not hitting home runs, and I don't see how either is solved in Miami. Better lineup? Astros have scored a lot more runs than Marlins. Own Lee in standard leagues but there's little upside.

Tyler (Chicago)

What are your thoughts on Morse ROS? I had him in my DL slot for 2 months...gave him an audition on my club for 3 weeks, cut him, and now hate myself...

Eric Karabell
  (11:00 AM)

I still don't see how he can hit .300 again, but there's no worry about the power. Totally legit.

Jason (NY)

Is Anthony Rizzo a good option at 1B ROS or is it still too early to tell?

Eric Karabell
  (11:01 AM)

Depends how deep the league is... in a 10-teamer I don't think I'd use the word "good" but obviously there is upside. Can't really judge in one week.

Jeff (Chicago)

Football.....what do you expect stats wise from B. Marshall this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:02 AM)

Probably close to 90 receptions, 1,200 yards and 6 or 7 touchdowns... borderline top 10 WR. I find myself liking Marshall more than I expected I would. Very consistent producer.

Parker (GA)

I recently received an offer of trout for my Agonz and Kipnis. While i declined this without a second thought, it hda me thinking- Just how valuable is trout, and is he worth moving top 10-15 overall talent in a keep 3 league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:03 AM)

I agree that would be a lot to give up, but it had me thinking for sure. I don't think Kipnis can keep up his pace, so that's an issue. Is Trout a top 10 guy now? Yeah, I think he is. If Kipnis doesn't hit/run and Gonzalez's power is gone, you would have wanted to make the deal.

Doug (Long Island)

Hey EK, any thoughts on Rizzo? Has his performance so far changed your expectations?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

No. It's a week. It's not like I hated the guy... just need to see more.

Chris (NY)

Quick football question - in a league where we start 2 QBs, would you take Brady and/or Brees over Foster, Rice, and McCoy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:04 AM)

No, I would not. You still need at least 2/3 running backs to start each week, right? I would gently move the QBs up my draft sheet, but my top 3 would remain RBs.

Chris Tillman (Baltimore)

Am I going to continue being a beast in the second half?

Eric Karabell
  (11:05 AM)

He made one start and it was in Seattle. I'd need to see more. I still have memories of his plus-5 ERA for each of the past three seasons...

Judd (DSM)

my ERA got destroyed this weekend, Worley, Lincecum, A Sanchez and Bumgarner. Is Bumgarner the only trusted guy for now?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

Absolutely. The Lincecum pounding was predictable... look at the Dodgers lineup he shut down in his previous start. Awful. Worley is somewhat reliable. Not much you can do if you have Lincecum... can't really trade him and can't drop him.

Jeff S. (Vermont)

Ervin Santana is an enigma, does the roulette continue with him, or can he become stable enough to touch in any league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:06 AM)

I've had enough. Not the same guy as last year, and again unusable away from home.

Jordan (Delaware)

I dropped Haren after his most recent disaster....good move?

Eric Karabell
  (11:07 AM)

Not really. Hopefully he gets a short DL stint soon to help his back and returns to be a top-20 starting pitcher. I'm not betting against that.

David (Littleton)

Do you like Fiers or Hughes better for the rest of this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Fiers seems to be fooling hitters with delivery, not stuff. I'd go with Hughes, which is telling since I'm not a big fan of anyone allowing so many home runs. But he will win.

Aroldis Chapman (Cincy)

What's my outlook for the second half? Regression? More blown saves? Or solid?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

Top 10 closer, massive upside for strikeouts. But don't even look at blown saves... meaningless stat. Overall should give good innings.

Matt (Dallas)

Do you think Cashner is worth stashing for the fantasy playoffs?

Eric Karabell
  (11:08 AM)

In a 10-team league, probably not. No idea if he'll be healthy ever.

Mike (Houston)

Altuve/Jennings for Uggla.....which would you prefer needs aside?

Eric Karabell
  (11:09 AM)

The Altuve/Jennings side... Uggla is terrific for power, but those younger guys are legit and can run.

El Guapo (Santa Polco)

Hey EK, what are your thoughts on Zobrist ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

Never a worry. Taking his walks, has power and speed and 2B eligibility... lot of people dropped him needlessly. Won't hit .300, but is safe.

Brian (NY)

Any update on Brett Anderson's return? Think he'll be useful right away?

Eric Karabell
  (11:10 AM)

From Tommy John surgery, useful right away? Have to say no. Nice future if he can stay healthy, but more of a wild card add this year.

RJ (NJ)

Who becomes closer for SD if Street is traded, Thayer or Gregerson?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

Thayer has "experience" so I'd guess him, but the Padres could give a look to Boxberger at some point, though his current numbers hardly warrant it. I'd say Thayer gets the saves the final two months... they HAVE to deal Street. Makes no sense for a last place team and they were given a gift of All-Star status to prop up leverage for an average pitcher. Do it!

Chris Perez (Cleveland)

Do you think I'll get traded?

Eric Karabell
  (11:12 AM)

No way. Indians are still in the race...and he's a "closer" even though he's not close to the best reliever on the team. But I doubt the team realizes it.

Dave (Denver)

Is what we are seeing from Cuddyer likely to be what we get for the rest of the year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:13 AM)

Power at home, merely average on the road? Yep, that's this Rockie.

Donald (Chicago, IL)

Give: Trout/Rizzo, Get: Prince/Jered Weaver... I sort of have to do this, right?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

If you need pitching, it certainly makes sense, yes. Trout is awesome but there's a price for everyone, and this is nice.

Andy (In)

16-team league. Does Adam Lind have value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:14 AM)

Just about everyone has value in that deep a league. I think Lind has power and can hit RHP. But I don't think he'll play every day or hit for average. Anyone that hits 20-homers has value... Lind, Ibanez, Arencibia...

Todd (Philly)

Berkman or Craig for ROS stats - per your gut feeling? I have both and I am not necessarily moving either, but I may need to trade one for pitching...

Eric Karabell
  (11:15 AM)

Can't believe I have to pick Craig, but man that guy can hit and I'm sure the Cardinals will get him at-bats. With Berkman... no guarantees.

Logan (NY)

Rollins or Ian Desmond ROS

Eric Karabell
  (11:17 AM)

Nothing fluky about Desmond. He isn't running (or walking) much but I don't see ton of upside with Rollins, either.

George (Stamford)

Is Ruggiano legit? I have him, Lee, AND Bonafacio and I hate having 3 guys from the same team. What does your crystal ball tell you for their value?

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

I wouldn't worry about having 3 Marlins... it's not football where a team can be shut out one Sunday and ruin a fantasy owner. Lee is probably overrated, but ownable. Ruggiano has had a nice run here, and now he's playing against RHP, which is nice. But can't call him a reasonable own yet. And Bonifacio might still win the SB crown despite missing 2 months...says a lot.

Kyle (Houston)

Roy Oswalt or Doug Fister ROS? Currently have Oswalt. Fister is on waivers.

Eric Karabell
  (11:18 AM)

Both are a mess right now. I'd take Oswalt but he has to improve. Fister is hurt.

Hank (Arlene)

Is the extreme heat in the midwest something to watch out for? I know it will bring down some numbers if it stays this hot but who are some guys to really worry about?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

I don't really buy that as an excuse. It's hot everywhere... we've studied Rangers players in the past and found there's no correlation with performance and heat. Affects the other team, too. I think in general ALL players get tired, it's a long season. I get tired. Mostly catchers and pitchers that haven't done it before, but even Ryan Braun gets tired by September.

MIke (Minneapolis, MN)

Jesus Montero's been brutal. Should I remain patient or drop him for Alex Aliva or J.P. Arencibia, who both just became available?

Eric Karabell
  (11:20 AM)

I'd take Avila there. I wonder if the Mariners send Montero down to see if he can learn how to take a walk (and work on the D).

jeff (bartlett)

if gardner comes back in the next 3 weeks, what do you see ROS from him?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

No reason to think his career numbers can't be reached... can steal 10 bases a month if he wants to.

Alex Smith (San Francisco)

Will I have a record setting season this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:21 AM)

In a good way? I think Smith is what he is, and it's not special for fantasy.

Chris (Boston)

ROS at catcher: AJ, Grandal, Perez, Arencibia?

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

Pierzynski doesn't seem fluky to me. Can't explain the power, but good for him. Sometimes catchers just develop the power late. AJ over Perez, then Arencibia and really we cannot get too excited about Grandal yet, despite his four homers in a week.

Josh Collmenter (ARI)

Am I a good spot start tomorrow against the Dodgers?

Eric Karabell
  (11:23 AM)

It's the Dodgers, so ... man, can't believe I am saying yes. But look at that lineup... not even a Triple-A lineup.

JJ (Boston)

Man, can't seem to get an answer today. Is Berkman or Kuble a better option than Desmond Jennings ROY?

Eric Karabell
  (11:24 AM)

Power for speed. I still like Jennings, personally. But Kubel is hitting for power and at this point would take him over Berkman.

Fernando Tatis (St Louis)

Trade ? = Would you give up Rizzo/Shields for CLee in a H2H League going forward?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Nah, I like James Shields. Not as much as Lee, but people think Lee has been awesome this season and been unlucky to not win and that's not the case. He's blown like 5 leads since June. Good K guy, but so is Shields.

Robert (Baltimore)

How can Jim Leyland keeping running Raburn out in the lineup? .176 are you serious?

Eric Karabell
  (11:25 AM)

Loyal to a fault... but also, who else does he have? I mean, we all love to rip the managers, Dusty for his ridiculous 1-2 lineup choices and Charlie M for his setup men, but who ELSE do they have? Gotta blame the GMs, no?

Daniel (NY)

What do you make of Travis Wood's recent good run... would you start him against the Mets? Mets feel like a good matchup, but they keep burning me.

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

I would start Travis against most any team right now. He seems back to 2010 status.

Ben (Plymouth)

Does Will Myers make a fantasy impact in 2012?

Eric Karabell
  (11:26 AM)

Probably not anywhere close to what people think. He's a rookie. Will have to make adjustments. And no guarantee he gets the call or when he does he plays.

Andy (Syracuse, NY)

I just picked up Youkilis off waivers from a tired owner....thoughts on him ROS?

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

While he's healthy he will hit. The problem is the durability.

Jack (Saint Paul)

Is Liriano in the circle of trust yet? I like the fact that he could be traded to an NL team, but he's burned me before. I'd have to drop either Worley or Masterson to pick him up...

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

I absolutely do not trust Liriano. Sorry.

Ted (Odessa, TX)

What do you think about spending $80 of a $200 budget on Rice and Mccoy in a ten team league?

Eric Karabell
  (11:27 AM)

I would do that in a second.

Johnnie Blaze (NYC)

Is Chris Young (AZ) droppable at this point?

Eric Karabell
  (11:28 AM)

Incredible. When Young returned from injury and was hitting like .400 I blogged that he'd drop 150 batting average points and got so much anger in return... and now people want to drop him. Yep, he is. But only if you have someone better. Still a 20-20 guy that hits .250. That didn't change one week into April... amazing.

Kelly (Indy)

Do you think Aceves holds on to the closing job in Boston?

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

If you're asking me to trust Andrew Bailey will be healthy the final 3 months, then yes, I say Aceves saves roughly 30 games this year.

Michael Trout (anaheim)

will i ever have a slump this season?

Eric Karabell
  (11:29 AM)

Ha! Hard to believe but yes, you will. Everyone will!

Randy Johnson (Seattle)

Does Chris Sale remind you of a younger version of myself in terms of stature & overall stuff?

Eric Karabell
  (11:30 AM)

No, there's never been anyone like Randy. I still worry a bit about Sale's durability, but he's obviously a terrific talent.

Ben (Plymouth)

Does Gyorko make any kind of impact this year?

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

There is a gigantic difference between hitting at Triple-A and hitting in San Diego. I think the guy can hit but ... Petco is a pitcher's park. Gyorko at second base...wow.

Travis (Nashville)

How big of an upgrade is Gallardo over J Zimmermann for this year? Thinking of making a trade...

Eric Karabell
  (11:31 AM)

Is it an upgrade? I don't see it that way!

chris (nyc)

Are we seeing the real Ian Kennedy?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

He's better than this, but last year was too outstanding to repeat.

RJ (Motown)

If Placido Polanco was traded to the Tigers would he have more value in that lineup?

Eric Karabell
  (11:32 AM)

No. Lineups don't matter! Please!

Steve (philly)

Fantasy football keeper...would you trade a 5th round pick to have j. graham as a 9th rd keeper this year and moving forward? 12 team non ppr

Eric Karabell
  (11:33 AM)

Sure. Lot of people think he's the top tight end and it's tough to argue. That's not too expensive.

David (DC)

Is Plouffe enrolled in the Bautista school of hitting?

Eric Karabell
  (11:34 AM)

I called it in December that Plouffe was the next Mike Morse... feeling good about that. But no, he's not Bautista. And Plouffe shouldn't hit for average.

Mr.InNeedofHelp (In traffic)

Eric, really need your help with this one. As an owner of both Chris Sale and Stephen Strasburg, I am concerned about the innings cap. Should I be shopping them? Everyone knows about the possible cap. Assuming their value is probably at its peak, what type of arms should I target in a trade?

Eric Karabell
  (11:35 AM)

People make WAY too much about this... enjoy the next 2-plus months from Strasburg and Sale. If they're shut down in mid-September, so be it. Take the stats for now... don't trade them for less than value. And just wisely play the waiver wire in September. Or maybe you'll have such a big lead in pitching stats...

Eric Karabell
  (11:36 AM)

OK, apologies but that is all the time I have for today. Thanks for showing up and hope you enjoyed the 4th... Hope I got to your question and have a great day! Adios...
