Chatting in two minutes ... here we go!
How can we possibly get o.j mayo? Can it be done?
First, we have to see how the Knicks are going to acquire Jason Kidd -- an outright signing or via a sign-and-trade. That will be a better indication of what kind of money the Knicks have. O.J. Mayo is a $5 million level player, so I'm not sure he'll accept a mid-level deal. The Knicks may have to engage in a sign-and-trade, and would that include Shumpert? Shumpert was likely going to be included in the sign-and-trade for Nash. Also, the Knicks have to decide what they're going to do about J.R. Smith. If they let him walk, they'll have more money for a guy like Mayo. We'll see what happens.
I know that Stoudemire is a tirless workout warrior and I don't doubt his dedication one bit, but it seems his biggest weakness are his hands. Seems to miss a lot of hot passes and rebounds careen off his fingers, etc. He needs some drills for that. What do you think? Fair asessment?
Yes, you're a bit right about that. He has smaller hands than most bigs and he plays better when he catches the ball in isolation when he has more time to control the ball. The plan is that he'll be working with Hakeem Olajuwon in August, by the way. Maybe that will help some more.
Don't the Knicks have to re-sign Jared Jeffries, if only to be the guy to take charges from LeBron (if they'd ever call one)? Championship or not he wasn't hitting many clutch J's in the finals, etc.
They don't have to, but it's likely they will. The Knicks supported Jeffries going to Germany to get that unique knee therapy and now Jeffries says he's feeling much better. At the veteran's minimum, he'd be great to have coming off the bench. Kenyon Martin is a possibility. Maybe even Elton Brand if he clears the amnesty wires, but I doubt he'll be available. However, someone who works closely with him said he would be open to the veteran's minimum. Keep in mind he'll still make money from his Sixers deal.
Jared, who do you see the Knicks filling out the rest of their roster with. What are the key names a Knick fan might be seeing in the future?
Well, most of the roster will be pretty locked up: Amare, Carmelo, Tyson, Lin, Smith, Kidd, Novak, Jeffries and White. The Knicks will match Lin, no doubt about that to me and many others I've spoken with. Douglas, Jordan and Harrellson are all trade bait for now, and out of those three, Douglas will likely not be back. If Jeffries re-signs, the Knicks focus has to be on locking up a third-string point guard and another shooting guard.
A backup PF/C better than Jared Jeffries is an important position that I don't hear much about the Knicks addressing, Do they have any players in mind that can be an insurance policy for Amare?
Agreed. I've written a lot about Jeffries' significance to this team. Letting him go would be foolish. But Jeffries told me he's testing the market and weighing offers. He could get paid more than the veteran's minimum, and if he comes back to New York next season, he'll be making a financial sacrifice. But that's the kind of guy he is. He's humble. He realizes that $1.4 million is still great money, and he enjoys playing for the Knicks and loves New York City. The Knicks need him for defensive support behind Tyson and especially Amare.
Hi Jared-thanks for the chat - breaks up the day perfectly! Can you tell us what the deal with Jerome Jordan's development to date? I know he was raw when drafted, but what kind of progress has he made? Where is he relative to where he needs to be to get regular burn on this team? Or is something else keeping him from getting time?
In practice, he always looks good. Blocks shots. Hits threes. I haven't heard how his development is going this summer. I'll let you know how he looks next week when I'm in Vegas for the Summer League. But don't be surprised if he's traded soon. The Knicks are focused on winning now. If they can land a veteran big or shooting guard, they'll gladly trade Jordan. They're not in waiting mode.
Have you heard of any names of guys who will be on Knicks Summer League Roster?
Final roster coming Monday. As of now, Toney Douglas, Jerome Jordan, Josh Harrellson, Chris Copeland and Chris Smith, J.R.'s younger brother. Douglas wasn't asked to play, but he wanted to.
what are the chances to pick up Camby? It's well publicized he wants to start, but won't for a contender. A Bench of Kidd, Camby, Novak, JR is very, vey enticing
Because Camby will probably be too expensive -- and as you mentioned, his priority is to start, which his agent told me directly -- I think the Knicks' priority should be re-signing Jeffries and then doing a sign-and-trade or using their mid-level exception to grab a solid shooting guard. O.J. Mayo or Randy Foye? Courtney Lee or Sonny Weems at the lower financial level? Those are some of the names out there. The Knicks should also use a veteran's minimum to lock up a third-string point guard. Mike Bibby? Mike James? John Lucas III? Keyon Dooling? Those are some possibilities.
Is there anything going on with Pablo Prigioni? Might be a nice third-string point guard.
Or him as a third-string point guard.
Was the Jason Kidd move a sign and trade?
Not confirmed yet. I spoke with Marc Stein, who broke the story, and he's not sure when that'll be confirmed. It could be an outright signing or a sign-and-trade.
Who do You see the Knicks getting as a 3rd string PG and SG to replace Landry Fields?
Let's see what happens first. I spoke with someone close to Landry and he said that Landry still loves the Knicks and New York and he'll be watching closely to see if the Knicks will match. Lin and Fields have talked about playing together again, but the money the Raptors were offering Fields was just too much to pass up. If he stays with Toronto, I'm sure he'll be happy, but I think he'll be happier if he's back in New York playing with Lin, who's a near-lock to return.
How much Salary can Knicks add before Dolan says NO more?
Well, the real issue will be matching Jeremy Lin's back-loaded contract. That will give the Knicks luxury tax ramifications in 2014 and 2015, when you also consider Amare, Tyson and Carmelo's contracts. But owner James Dolan won't worry about that. Also, Lin is a unique player on and off the court. I'd be shocked if the Knicks don't match.
Have you talked to Landry Fields about his offer sheet? Does he realize it's a little exorbitant?
I have not spoken with him directly. But it's free agency. Many contracts are too much.
Lin doesn't fit the offense why would New York match?
I disagree. He proved in New York in those 25 games or so that he can push the ball and make plays in the halfcourt offense. You want a point guard who can operate in both systems, and Lin can do that.
How critical is this year for Melo? If the Knicks are one and done in the playoffs, will it be time to say the Melo trade was a mistake and trade him?
Very critical. I'll say this now: He needs to have the best complete season of his career. Not just scoring, but consistent defense and bringing more of a floor vision. He's already dedicated himself to training this summer, dropping 12 pounds. So I like what I see from him so far. I think he really respects Mike Woodson and that coach-player relationship should positively impact the entire team.
Am I crazy or is JR Smith wildly underpaid? This guy is better than guys like Jamal Crawford and Landry Fields and Nick Young, yet he makes less than half of what they make. Wouldn't it be wise for him to leave? I can see DAL making an offer.
While Smith is streaky, when the Knicks are healthy and he's not asked to do too much, I think Smith will find his way as a 3-point shooter and perimeter defender. While he's not on Shumpert's level, he improved defensively under Woodson. He always played hard towards the end of the season. I'll always remember how physical he was with LeBron James during the first round of the playoffs. Smith's intensity increased under Woodson. He just needs to work on his shot selection and driving to the basket more instead of relying on fallaway jumpers. But, like I said, with a healthy and deep roster around him, I think he can flourish more with defined roles. There's no questioning his 3-point shot; one of the best in the game. If he came back, he'd be a luxury to the Knicks.
Any word on Danny Green? He would be an AWESOME fit as the starting two guard while J.R. Smith and Kidd come off the bench.
I would say he's off the Knicks' radar. A pay day is coming for Green, probably similar to what Fields got if I had to guess.
How is Kidd and Woodson going to work out together? The did have a brush up during a Hawks game a few years back.
Baron Davis and Woodson got along really well. Also, Woodson got along fine with Mike Bibby. Woodson respects the elder point guards a lot. I see Kidd and Woodson getting along just fine. Kidd didn't sign with the Knicks expecting to be in first command. He understands it could be Lin's team and Kidd will do what's necessary. I think Woodson commands the respect of players well. He's a player's coach; that's his strength.
If Toney Douglas isn't in the Jason Kidd trade where else could he be sent to and what could the knicks get for him?
Either a big man or shooting guard -- two needs on the team. But Douglas won't be the only one included. Jordan and Harrellson would likely be shipped out too because the Knicks would look to land a legit player.
Do you think JR Smith is underpaid compared to what other guys like the ones I mentioned are making?
I would say he is. His numbers and abilities would put him in the $5 million range.
HOW CLOSE WERE WE REALLY TO GETTING NASH? WAS HE JUST PLAYING US THE WHOLE TIME?
I think it was close between the Knicks and Suns, but I don't think it was as close between the Knicks and Steve Nash. He really made it seem like his kids were a priority, being close to them, so why would he come all the way to New York?
HOW BUSY HAS YOUR WEEK BEEN? LOL
haha VERY! And it will continue ...
Players coach? Really? Living in ATL, he berated the Hawks' players every chance he got. I hope Woodson learned from his time as the Hawks coach.
Most of the Knicks player this past year said they were drawn to Woodson's ability to mesh with them.
Are the Knicks management team at all worried about the buzz Brooklyn is creating? NY is a Knicks town, but Brooklyn seems to be getting all the buzz.
Maybe if Dwight Howard comes to the Nets. The Knicks are still on top, especially if they retain Lin, which is almost a near guarantee.
Wouldn't Nate Robinson be perfect as a combo guard off the bench with this group? He could be a 3rd PG, and SG insurance.
Robinson wants to play, so you can forget third-string point guard. He developed well last season in Golden State. I don't see him at shooting guard on the Knicks.
What do you like more.. Lin/Kidd with Shumpert or Nash/Lin but without shumpert? I rather the first one, i think shumpert have a lot of potential and NYK did right to keep him.
Lin, Kidd and Shumpert for sure. You can't replace Shumpert's perimeter defense -- needed for a deep playoff run. He's also going to develop well on offense.
Jared - what determines whether the Kidd signing is an outright signing or a sign 'n trade? And who decides, why would each side want one vs the other, etc.? I'm just naive to the process
The GMs involved, like anything else.
Any chance the Knicks make a run at Elton Brand?
I doubt he clears the amnesty wires. A team under the salary cap, which is allowed to sign him, will likely pick him up.
If lin does'nt return who starts at point?
Kidd. But expect Lin back.
On the really off chance Knicks don't match Lin's offer, how much cap $pace would they have left in that scenario to sign a PG?
Enough cap space. But for the price of a starting point guard, they might be looking at the same financial situation like with Lin.
Wouldn't it be smarter for the Knicks just to let Jeremy Lin sign elsewhere and just bring in Felton to help Kidd? They would save a ton of money and still be able to help the team out cap wise over the next few years.. Your thoughts please.
It's a good question. But I think Lin is a talent you don't want to pass on. Look at the offer sheet Daryl Morey is waving in front of Lin in Houston. You have to go with Lin and Kidd.
With Steve Nash not landing to New York, and Jeremy Lin finding other crazy deals in other cities for example Houston. What are the other options do New York have to bring a Point Guard. And also as you know Landry Fields New York starting Shooting Guard verbally agreed a 3 year 20 million dollar offer with the Raptors, and also our secondary Shooting Guard J.R. Smith who announced that he doesn't want to come back to New York. What other options is NY looking to sign as a Shooting Guard. And are the Knicks still looking to trade Amar'e Stoudemire or are they waiting till they sign all there pieces to create the team and see if they should trade him then?
Point guards for third-string duties: John Lucas III, Mike James, Keyon Dooling and maybe even Mike Bibby. Shooting guards: O.J. Mayo, Randy Foye, Courtney Lee and Sonny Seems are some of the names. The Knicks will not trade Amare. If there was any speculation to that, I think it would've come out already with now a week into free agency.
What are you expecting to happen with Lin?
The Knicks match.
Jared, assuming the Knicks match the Lin offer, will they have enough caproom to retain Shump beyond his rookie contract?
Great question. He's signed through next season. At that point, Shumpert could be a hot commodity. Let's first see how he rebounds from his injury.
Jared, with Kidd on board and NYK looking for a SG who can knock 3's, and likely signing a big men (could be our Jeffries), do you think that our roster, healthy, it's set to beat the Celtics and the Heat and ready for a championship contention?
I don't think anyone in the East will be on the Heat's level next season or the one after that. But I envision the Knicks being a third, fourth seed (at least) next season, hosting home court and getting to the semifinals. At that point, hopefully health and chemistry is clicking.
Jared, Do you think Woodson considers using Amare on the bench at all this year and playing Melo more at the PF like last year? Lin-Kidd-JR-Melo-Chandler
I think Amare starts at the four, but I don't think who starts is the most important thing. Woodson will use Melo at the four and there will be different lineups throughout. With Melo, the Knicks have the ability to play small (like LeBron at the four in Miami), so I don't think any one lineup is set.
I realize it's Woodson now, but was Phil Jackson ever really a legitimate chance?
Any update on Novak's contract? You mentioned Woodson respects elder PGs; how does he see Lin?
Who shouldn't respect what Lin did over 25 games, coming off the bench, one day away from getting cut before his breakthrough game? Woodson is going to give him the reins to start in training camp, and we'll see what happens. There's no update on Novak's contract, but he has many offers. I think Novak will wait to see what Lin does.
assuming the knicks get lin and smith back, where do you rank them in the east power rankings. behind miami and boston, who else.
Third or fourth yes. With the talent they have, definitely. With the right coaching from Woodson, they'll definitely be right there.
Do you see any surprises coming from Grunwald
Final question ... I don't think so because the Knicks don't have a lot of trade bait, they can't amnesty anyone and they don't have a lot of salary cap room.
Guys, thanks for your questions. Some different scenarios can play out; nothing's set yet. As we've seen already with this free agency, some surprises can happen. If you need to reach me, hit me on Twitter @JaredZwerling ... I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.
