Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (1:59 PM)

Wow. Been more than two weeks since I've been on here. Glad to get back. Missed chatting it up with you guys. A lot has happened. Let's get going.

Christian (Richmond, VA)

Does the #11 NWS car exist without Brian Scott and his family's support?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Good question. Was at the Big Money Legends event on Tuesday night and his name came up in the discussion of how it takes money to make it in NASCAR these days. My guess on Scott is no.

Spencer (Indy)

Any news on an andretti nascar team for next year?

David Newton
  (2:02 PM)

Nothing yet, but that it hasn't gone away means it's still a possibility. My Silly Season update is here if you haven't read it. http://es.pn/RkIdhy

Dave (WI)

Where's the petition to sign to get Austin in the 3 car in cup? Great to see it back in victory lane!

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

Let's start one here. If you want to see Austin Dillon drive the 3 in Cup, just give your name in the comment section here at the end of the chat.

Roscoe (Chino, CA)

Do you see Kyle and Kurt working together fri night to finish 1-2 in the NW race?

David Newton
  (2:03 PM)

You're thinking bad there. Got any proof.

Marion (sc)

David, any news on Dodge for 2013 ?

David Newton
  (2:04 PM)

Just that no major team has stepped forward. Later it goes the more I believe they will disappear for a year or so.

Toni (NY)

What baffles me is how a driver like Kenseth has a hard time getting sponsorship when there are cars out there mired in the bottom twenty with full sponsorship. Why would any sponsor want to pay for a sponsorship to a car that has no chance of winning or getting media exposure except for the 30 seconds when that car typically hits the wall or blows an engine?

David Newton
  (2:07 PM)

First, there aren't that many in the bottom twenty that are fully sponsored. Looks may be deceiving in some cases. But it is baffling that Roush Fenway hasn't been able to get Kenseth a full sponsor. It wasn't that long ago that RFR had more sponsors than any team in the garage.

Daryl (Iowa)

Wouldn't the 47 be in play as an available ride on 2013? not great, but has been fully funded. I can't see Labonte back.

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Yes, it should be. I like Labonte, but his time has come and gone.

Bill (CA)

Do you think Kenseth has informed Roush of where he will be driving next year. Jack has insinuated the "dark side" meaning Toyota. So its JGR or MWR and did Jack break his word of silence with Matt by dropping that hint?

David Newton
  (2:08 PM)

Pretty sure. Dark side might be a good hint. Jack has a history of bashing Toyota as you know. And it is JGR.

derek dothan alabama [via mobile]

Hey newt,I really believe the should take the win away if a car fails inspection. Its really not fair to the cars that pass inspection. the time that sticks out in my mind was when richard petty had to many cubic inches. At least have a guide line on certain infractions. Your thought

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

I hear ya, but what if something during the race caused the car to be off? It happens. You can't make it that black and white. Plus, in the early days one of France's big things was to make sure fans knew who won when they left the track. How would you feel to see the outcome changed after you got home and had spent hundreds to attend the race.

Brian (Glade Valley,NC)

Heard on Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain Sunday night that either Petty or Dodge had an announcement coming at Daytona.Have heard nothing else about this since then.Any news or insight?

David Newton
  (2:10 PM)

Nothing coming at Daytona. Here's all the latest I know. http://es.pn/RkIdhy

Brian (Glade Valley,NC)

Heard a rumor ot two about Newman possibly going back to Penske.Any news on that and did he leave on good terms originally?

David Newton
  (2:11 PM)

He did leave on good terms, and I guess that would be a possibility. I am thinking Penske will take care of Sam Hornish Jr. before Newman, though.

cody (corbin,ky [via mobile]

I know this maybe a while down the road but who do you see stepping into the 24 after gordon retires and what do you think his chances are of getting into the chase he has some really good tracks coming up for him?

David Newton
  (2:12 PM)

Interesting. Maybe Mr. H can lure Brad K back. He said when Brad left the door would be open. Really hard to tell. Chase Elliott might be a good pick, though. By the time Gordon steps down in about four years Chase should be ready. Bill tells me he's more talented than he was at that age.

becca (corbin ky) [via mobile]

How do you think the bristol race will go this august?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

Not quite as crazy as the old days. They eliminated the third lane up at the top. but there remains two lanes. Still, it will be tighter and make passing tougher in the corner, so you should see more slam bang than this past race.

Zach (Indiana)

Does AJ Allmendinger return to Penske Racing next year? He is starting to turn his season around, do you agree?

David Newton
  (2:13 PM)

If you saw this http://es.pn/RkIdhy you'll see I don't think AJ returns. I'm betting on Sam Hornish Jr. in the 22.

Fred ( Al ) [via mobile]

So what's the hold up on JGR & Kenseth ? And do you think he'll be driving the 20 ? And DO you think Jimmy Fenning will go with him ?

David Newton
  (2:14 PM)

Again the long answer is in here http://es.pn/RkIdhy. The short answer is JGR wants to re-sign Logano first and lock down all the sponsor deals for 2013 before announcing its entire lineup. Still details.. As for Fennig, he's not sure what he will do now.

Andrew Conlon-Riser (Oakland, NJ)

What current non-chase driver will get a win next? Where will it be?

David Newton
  (2:15 PM)

Jeff Gordon. Daytona on Saturday. If I'm wrong, he'll win at New Hampshire.

Ronnie ( tx ) [via mobile]

What do you see the rest of the year holding for Brad K, does he have a shot to win it all?

David Newton
  (2:16 PM)

Indeed he does. One of the most talented driver out there. He could win anothe race or two before the Chase. What he needs to work on to win a title is consistency. Can't win a title without that if you look at the average finish for the Chase winner.

Crystal (Ball)

Joe Gibbs Racing 2013 Lineup #11 Denny Hamlin/FedEx #18 Joey Logano/M&Ms #20 Matt Kenseth/Home Depot #54 Kyle Busch/Monster Energy

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Now that is intriguing. I like it. Have been thinking Monster might follow Kurt somewhere, but Kyle makes more sense since he has the deal. Love the paint scheme.

Antonio N. San Francisco, CA. [via mobile]

Do you believe Sonoma should get a 2nd date, so one race can be in the chase on a Saturday night? I do love my June date, but a road course should be in the chase, plus wherever you sit u can see practically the entire track! I'd support two events there Bruton! I took some friends this year and they are hooked! Sonoma is my Daytona!!!

David Newton
  (2:17 PM)

Not a second date. Not at all. If they add a road course to the Chase I want to see Montreal.

Aaron Denver [via mobile]

Will Tony E. Jr. get and Crew C. Job in Cup again

David Newton
  (2:18 PM)

Only if JR Motorsports goes to Cup.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hi Newt, what's up with all of Penske's love for Hornish? I understand he's made some noise in open wheel, but he hasn't really done much in stock cars. What am I missing?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

He's fourth in the NW series now and looking very good. And he had moments in stock cars. Just needed some breeding in a lower series. As for his love for Hornish, the driver did a lot for him in IndyCar.

Andy (MI)

Any word on sponsorship for Stenhouse next year?

David Newton
  (2:20 PM)

Sure he'll probably pick up some of the sponsorship they had for Kenseth with Best Buy, etc.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, just got done mowing the lawn and it is HOT in Orlando, no humidity though. I saw you were in the hospital, hope you are OK and what happened? Also, sense Stenhouse to the 17 does that mean RFR stays at 3 until 2014 when they move Bayne up or do they make a run at someone else and you see the same sponsors on the 17 next year as this year? Thanks again David, glad you are back buddy!

David Newton
  (2:23 PM)

Well, had a little heart issue. Two of my three major arteries were blocked 90 percent. Had that taken care of and then a relapse that put me back in. All appears good now. Actually wrote a column from the hospital two weeks ago. Better than eating the food. As for RFR, the only way they go to four cars if it sponsorship steps up. I mean full for both cars. Roush won't run a fourth car all season without it.

Jesse James mn [via mobile]

Happy 4th!! Come on Gordon u can do it

David Newton
  (2:24 PM)

He's my pick

Fred ( Al ) [via mobile]

Why didn't Edwards go to JGR. RFR is very inconsistent

David Newton
  (2:25 PM)

Ford stepped up big time. Haven't you noticed him in some of the commercials, like the ones they ran during American Idol. Roush stepped up, too. And in the end, I think he felt maybe the grass wasn't greener. JGR has been inconsistent as well.

Joe (Washington)

There is a limit on the number of cars a team can own. Do you think there should be a limit on the number of racetracks that a group can own?

David Newton
  (2:26 PM)

Four. Used to be five. As far as track ownership, not concerned with how many one group owns. More concerns with relationship between the governing body and ISC that is close.

Roscoe (Cali)

Does my driver Kyle get into the top ten? hehe

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

Gonna be tough at this point. He's about a race back.

John (PA)

David, will Penske spin off his engine operation to Dodge or will he merge it into Roush-Yates?

David Newton
  (2:27 PM)

I believe Penske will build Dodge engines and sell them to teams, then use RFR engines for its cars.

Lee (Ohio) [via mobile]

Is Kenseth to JGR a foregone conclusion? The longer longer it takes to make an announcement the more i think its possibly another team. The last time I seen a consensus like this a certain 3rd generation driver was leaving his father's team to join RCR...

David Newton
  (2:28 PM)

No, it's pretty much a done deal. Read here and it'll give you a better idea. http://es.pn/RkIdhy

Jay (GA)

Bass Pro Shops works alot with Tony Stewart, do you see them as a possible sponsor replacement for Newman as SHR since Ryan is an avid outdoorsmen

David Newton
  (2:29 PM)

Not so much. While the ERG folks tell me they feel good about Bass Pro coming back to McMurray, I wouldn't be surprised to see them go to Austin Dillon for his entry into Cup.

@rowdybrad182 (De)

David why dont i get any replys on my tweets to you anymore

David Newton
  (2:30 PM)

Didn't know I wasn't. Ask me later today and I'll try. But I've been out for a few weeks.

Neal (Denver, CO)

Alright Newt - what is it about Danica Patrick that causes people to completely ignore reality? She's not a terrible driver but her talent-to-hype ratio is way out of whack. Right now it appears she'll be the exact same thing in stock cars that she was in IndyCar - a mid-pack driver who doesn't tear up equipment but doesn't contend for the win much (if at all).

David Newton
  (2:31 PM)

That she is the first woman to have a realistic chance of making it fulltime to Cup is waht excites people.

@rowdybrad182 (De)

Could we see kurt on a big team next season and whats your opinion on daytona ending the season id love it and throw a road course in there to

David Newton
  (2:32 PM)

Big? Doubtul. The only big team I could see come into play might be RCR. But I think we're a ways from that.

@rowdybrad182 (De)

vickers to mwr 55 next season what u think

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Martin has a contract to drive it part-time again. Not saying he wouldn't step aside, but deals are deals.

derek dothan alabama [via mobile]

Me again, I hope mat goes to rcr just. To hear all the dis belief from everyone. Unless you know more than just speculation!!

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

Not happening. Sorry.

Ryan (Chicago)

If JGR can't get sponsorship for Logano in Cup, would Joey be wiser to race for the NW championship instead of joining a poorly funded Cup team?

David Newton
  (2:33 PM)

If that means staying at JGR, yes.

David (MO)

You guys speculated Edwards to JGR was a done deal and were wrong. What makes you so sure Kenseth is going to JGR?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

Never said it was a done deal to JGR. And Edwards never said he was leaving and had a deal done. What makes me sure? I listen when people talk.

Cole Trickle (Kansas) [via mobile]

Your Darkhorse for Daytona?

David Newton
  (2:35 PM)

I'll stick with my regular, Joey Logano. Or Kurt Busch.

Saul (San Diego)

If MK joins JGR, what is the future of J Logano?

Fred (Alabama)

Whats the hold up on Kenseth JGR ? what # do you think he'll be driving and will Jimmy Fenning follow him to JGR

David Newton
  (2:36 PM)

JGR wants to sign Logano before announcing anything. Could be fulltime in 20. Could be parttime in 20 and fulltime in NW. Here's all I know. http://es.pn/RkIdhy

Jobi (NY)

Do you really think that Allmendinger and Almirola will be looking for rides for next year

David Newton
  (2:37 PM)

I really do. There are better drivers that would give the sponsors more.

Kyle (MA)

Hey David, there's an angle to Kenseth leaving I haven't heard much about: Do you anticipate any reluctance on Ford/RFR's part going forward with sharing information/technology/team meetings with a driver departing for a rival manufacturer and team?

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Not really. Roush and Ford have more respect for Kenseth than most.

Jay (GA)

Why did JGR put Bowyer in the 20 instead of one of its other drivers like Ryan Truex or Michael McDowell? I like Bowyer, but I think someone else should get the chance

David Newton
  (2:38 PM)

Big race and Toyota wants big names with a better chance to win behind the wheel.

dillonbros fan (nc)

could we see austin in cup full time next season or the year after in the 3 car and his brother on rcr as well in the 33

David Newton
  (2:40 PM)

I am guessing Austin will drive part-time in Cup next year, then fulltime in 2014. But if he wins the NW title he could make the jump fulltime if sponsors are with him. As for the 33 and Ty, that is at least three or four years off.

Yadier (MO)

If Matt joins Gibbs and Gibbs retain Logano, does that give Gibbs the best driver stable?

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Would be difficult to say otherwise. Hendrick I believe is first, but when you put Matt into the equation that changes fast.

k (nc)

is chase the future of hendrick motorsports

David Newton
  (2:41 PM)

Could be. The kid has talent.

Dee (Vegas)

How much is Shell/Pennzoil kicking themselves for requesting a Champion (Kurt Busch) to be in their car last year rather than just letting Keselowski be their driver? 6 wins since that time. Plus, who knows if Kurt's antics are as closely scrutinized if Miller was still his sponsor? The poem 'two roads diverged' comes to mind.

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

First, I like Brad K with Miller. The sponsor lets him be himself more than most. Not sure if Kurt with what he did would have survived with any sponsor. Pretty sure Miller had a say in getting Brad K over Kurt, too.

stump (MO)

With all the hype that Logano had, who would have thought that Keslowski would have been the better sign coming out of their class?

David Newton
  (2:43 PM)

The problem here is Logano got thrown into the Cup mix a year or two earlier than he should have been. Keselowski had more seasoning.

jgfan24 (md)

when gordon retires will hendrick retire the number 24 and let jeff buy into half the company and make it hendrickgordon motorsports being he half owns jimmies car

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

Jeff already has part ownership of the 48. Don't see the 24 being retired. Hendrick will just try to build on the legacy with another driver.

Marion (sc)

will petty be back with ford or is he working on another manufact. ?

David Newton
  (2:44 PM)

He told me his first option is to be back with Ford.

Kyle (MA)

Any rumblings concerning a possible move from multiple NNS and truck series sponsorships to full-time cup for Dollar General? The one missing puzzle piece for a fantastic expansion for JGR is a 4th sponsor. Makes a lot of sense when you connect the dots...

David Newton
  (2:45 PM)

Think I suggested that in my column today. http://es.pn/RkIdhy. You know what they say about great minds. Or even average minds in my case.

Dee (Vegas)

Why put Clint Bowyer in the 20 JGR Nationwide car at Daytona? Was Ryan Truex not available or was the likely a sponsor decision?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Again, a big race with big dollars.

Zach cross (Church HIll)

Is Clint Bowyer going to do anymore Nationwide Races with JGR or is this a one race deal for Daytona?

David Newton
  (2:46 PM)

Special situation. Never know what else comes up.

kyle b fan (fl)

i heard rumor of kb and gibbs parting way if so can we see him bring up kbm and hire his brother to drive and he drive as well kyle could put up with his brothers bs

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

Hadn't heart that, but it would be interesting. And it could become a power team fast with good equipment.

Eric (Virginia)

How much of Penske's success this year is a result of them being with Dodge? Would a team that moved to Dodge, say EGR, be successful, or are Penske's results this year based on the team and drivers?

David Newton
  (2:47 PM)

EGR doesn't have the engine department or the quality of drivers that Penske has. Make that driver. I will put Juan and Jamie above AJ.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Will Kenseth's departure mean anything for the 16 or 99 team overall? Should Biffle be concerned about his status with Roush? Should Edwards?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Biffle is good. No real concern. Roush has a history of bringing young drivers up and turning them into top drivers.

Kyle (MA)

Along the lines of Toni in NY's question: Not all cup programs cost the same to run and driver salary is a big part of that. Some of those "fully sponsored" teams you are seeing mid pack in the standings probably don't require the financial commitment to a cup champion level driver salary like Kenseth commands. Big names on the best teams also require the most $ to run, correct?

David Newton
  (2:49 PM)

Exactly. Thanks.

Dee (Vegas)

If I was Kurt Busch, I would be talking to every sponsor available, including 1 race deals to try and get in the 39 car for next year. But, do drivers even have the time to court 10 to 20 sponsors for 1 or 2 race deals? The logistics of having so many different sponsors (and keeping them happy) has got to be near impossible.

David Newton
  (2:50 PM)

Sure Newman would be trying to do the same.

Ryan (Chicago)

I just can't see Hornish being competitive in Cup. That would seem like a bad move to me.

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Look at his numbers in NW this year.

Stevietimes (chicago)

whoyagot" at the Firecracker 400!!!!

David Newton
  (2:51 PM)

Gordon.

Matt (Chicago)

If you had to guess with 9 races left, who are the two wild cards this season?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Logano and Kyle Busch.

Lee (Ohio) [via mobile]

Any rule changes for Daytona this week?

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

Haven't heard any, but it's early.

Jay (Ga)

Do you think Marcos Ambrose can sneak into the Chase, he'll probably win Watkins Glen, and he's been real consistent the last four races

David Newton
  (2:52 PM)

He needed to win at Sonoma to have a really good chance.

Kenny Reidsuille NC [via mobile]

Hey Dauid I thought Ragan would have done better n the 22 than AJ since he did prove he could win I think the kids got some talent but got passed up from getting a big time ride. Your thoughts David ?

David Newton
  (2:53 PM)

I am with you. I wasn't a big fan of the AJ move.

Kyle (Boston)

Great to have you back David, wondering if you have any additional info or insight into the recent news that Denny Hamlin is skipping the NNS race with a sore back and is also not practicing his Cup car today? No big deal and just precautionary since practice and car setup matters little at Daytona, or is this something more serious?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Thanks, Great to be back. No real news on Hamlin. Maybe he got sunburn on the Fourth. He does like to play basketball, too. Remember the knee?

Saul (San Diego)

The #5 KK, makes the chase? Yes or No?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

Gonna be close. Catching Brad K for the win last week would have been a huge help.

Eric (DC)

Any concerns about the track at Daytona post-jet dryer incident?

David Newton
  (2:54 PM)

None. May be hotter there than it was in February with the fiery jet dryer.

Shane (PA)

I think your comparing apples to oranges with AJ's stats in Cup, and Sam's stats in the Nationwide series. I just think it's way too early to pull the plug on AJ. Especially after how much Roger sought AJ out to be the "anti-Kurt Busch" for his team.

David Newton
  (2:55 PM)

Maybe apples to oranges, but if it comes down to just two cars I don't see Roger keeping AJ and not giving Sam a chance.

Fred ( Al ) [via mobile]

So if Kenseth didn't Sign with JGR. Would we be talking about Kurt Bush to JGR ? I think so since home Depot wants a winner

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Think Kurt's suspension might have sped up talks with Kenseth.

Lee (Ohio) [via mobile]

With the proposed F1 race in NYC next year will that make NASCAR step up its efforts for a race in NYC?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Doubtful.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Is Carl going to make the chase?

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Hate to say it, but I don't think so.

Bubba (SC)

Logano over Kahne for a wild card??????LMMFAO

David Newton
  (2:56 PM)

Talk to me after 26 races.

Kyle (MA)

With as much criticism as Joey Logano recieves you'd think he is an abject failure. But the kid is 22, an age where we should be comparing him more to Stenhouse, Bayne, Dillon. Those are his contemporaries, only circumstances have forced him to have three, full cup campaigns under his belt instead. He could be driving another 20 yrs, has a bright future and an asset that JGR has invested lots in, I can't see them letting him go can you?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Thank you.

Saul (San Diego)

Should the point system be twicked?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

Tweeked, yes. 5 points for a win.

Bowtie51 (MD)

What do you think about Kurt running for a Nationwide championship and winning next year in Kyles car and maybe some select races in Cup...for whomever, then coming back to cup the following year and whooping some serious ass?

David Newton
  (2:57 PM)

He's too good to be fulltime in NW.

Jay (GA)

Why do you love Logano so much?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

Don't. Just think he gets a bad rap and he's only 22.

Brian (Seattle)

Looking like it is going to take 2 wins to sucure a wild car, who do you see filling the final 2 spots?

David Newton
  (2:58 PM)

As I said earlier, Kyle Busch and Logano.

Neal (Denver, CO)

To your point about people rooting for Danica because she's got a good shot at being full-time in Cup - She's getting so much of the spotlight that Johanna Long is an afterthought. I've personally been more impressed by what Johanna's done driving for an underfunded team than I am with Danica's results in much better equipment.

David Newton
  (2:59 PM)

Long deserves more, but having the reputation from IndyCar and a big-time sponsor puts the spotlight on Danica. Unfair? Maybe. but that's the world we live in.

Ken (Tempe)

Is Nascar concerned about the declining attendance at some of the tracks? Seems like we are seeing more and more empty seats....

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

They're concerned anytime numbers dip. One reason we're seeing changes in the cars is to make the racing better and get fans back.

Brian (Glade Valley,NC)

Do you see Harvick ever leaving RCR?Everyone knows both Grandsons are coming to Cup eventually.

David Newton
  (3:00 PM)

Will never say never after this Kenseth deal, but I don't see him leaving.

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

That's it for me folks. Good to be back and see what's on your minds. Thanks for all the questions. As always, follow me on twitter at Dnewtonespn and ask away there. Have a good rest of the Fourth of July week holiday.
