Wow. What a crazy week it has been so far, from the AJ news to penalties for Smoke and Dillon. Lots to talk about, so let's get right to it. Fire away. And by the way, I turned on auto update, thank you.
It seems like most of the writers on here think that Kurts best bet for a competitive ride next year is to team up with Kyle and bring KBM to the cup level. Assuming Kenseth goes to Gibbs and Joey stays on board, It would be impossible for KBM to come to cup because of the 4 team rule. Has everyone forgotten about when the rumor was that Jr. would move his team up to cup for Danica and nascar said it violated the 4 team max?
Not sure that is what most writers think. I haven't ruled out RCR or RPM, and the potential Andretti team is a potential landing spot. Too early to predict.
Newt, i was absolulty shocked about the aj drug scandal. Im not buyin tho. i mite be nieve about these kinds of situations as i still stand behind jermey mayfield as well. But i dont think any driver currently driving would do this. NONE OF THEM
You probably donn't think baseball players do steroids, either. Don't be too naieve. But I was shocked as well. Think we all are in situations like this.
David, hope you are feeling well today. Wanted to get your thoughts on what could happen next in Silly Season? Think Newman would be a good fit at RCR, Logano at Penske maybe with a 3rd car, Dodge's plans for next year, Kenseth's deal, etcThanks for the chats David and answering our questions!
I am. Can't wait to get back to the track this weekendn for the first time in a month. As for Silly season, you're right Newman would be a good fit at RCR and Logano at Penske. This may help JGR step it up to re-sign Logano to full Cup deal instead of maybe a partial one with full NW. They have invested a lot in the driver and don't want to lose him. Still no word on Dodge. Andretti may be best hope.
Hi Newt. What's your favorite current regular paint scheme and why doesn't Heinz pony up and sponsor a ketchup themed 57 car?
Current favorite is the grayish, siliverish Diet Dew car Dale Jr. drives from time to time. Heinz 57 would be awesome. Used to put it on everything as a kid.
Will the 39 be around next year? And if it is and Newman isn't in the car, who is?
I'd say 50-50, maybe 40-60. Stewart wants to keep Newman if sponsorship is found. Hearing nothing good on that yet.
Finch told Urt he needs to stop wrecking cars. That continues to be a problem. Will his NW win cancell out some of those wrecks and give him new life?
Think he meant don't overdrive them to the point of wrecking. What happened last week doesn't count. And yes, although the money wasn't great, winning the NW race was great for team spirit.
Hi Newt! Quick question. Bowyer/Edwards/Truex/Kahne/ - in or out of Chase??? Thanks!
Truex and Bowyer in. Other two out.
Hey David - Clint has had top 10 cars wrecked the last two weeks due to circumstances outside of his control. You think he'll put that behind him and contend for the win this weekend (and Chase down the road)? Who are you picking to win?
He's pretty good at New Hampshire. I've got Gordon to win. Thought it might be last week, but feel pretty good about it happening this week. Almost like I felt when Dale Jr. won at Michigan.
Newt, what are your thoughts on red flagging races under 10 laps? In my opinion, it would make for more exciting finishes. More strategy would be implemented, pit vs. stay out, old tires vs. new tires, and more laps to race than just parading around until a GWC.
I hear ya, but it also would take some of the fuel strategy that crew chiefs work on out of the equation. I'm OK with red flagging if the situation warrants it, but not just to manipulate a good finish. Would you give an NFL team trying to make a comeback an extra timeout?
The 88 has run every single lap this season--which is an amazing testament to driver and team. Has any team ever run every lap of a season?
There's a Dale Jr. question. Thought you guys had forgotten him. As for the question, yes, there have been drivers that have done that in the past. Can't name one off the top of my head, but if you go to racing reference you can look.
I believe this is Junior's best season--even better than 04 due to the fact that the 88 is good every week at every track. Will we see this from here on out in years to come with Junior and Letarte?
Now two in a row....Agree, being good at all kinds of tracks does make Dale Jr. a bigger threat than ever. Hard to say if it's a long-term deal. The new car in 2013 could change things.
with the aj thing. i think that if an A test comes up positive i believe nascar should automatically test the B sample before coming out with suspensions or anything like that. i know there is a saftey concern with that but in aj's case he had made it through the weekend up to that point
So had Mayfield at Richmond when he tested positive.
Will Newman be in the 39 next year? If not...who will be in it?
Odds getting longer on that. If they can't get sponsorship for Newman, it will be hard to get it for practically any other driver. Could just see Stewart and Patrick at SHR.
The Cup race as Daytona was a snooze fest for the most part...I wish Nascar would quit making changes and just leave it alone...give these guys a chance to adapt to a certain style and it will get good again. On the other hand the Nationwide race was awesome!!! Guys could actually drive up through and challenge....in Cup the Fords clearly have an advantage
I have to admit, I wasn't in favor of two-car dancing until Saturday night. After watching the Cup race after the NW race I was in favor of bringing it back. That wasn't really pack racing because the outside line couldn't move to the front.
Many media members left Junior's career for dead less than 2 years ago. Fast cars and Letarte have obviously been part of the solution, but do you see differences in Junior the driver from years past?
I do. He's more confident and open about everything. Confidence can go a long way in sports.
when do you think RPM makes a decision on there manufacturer for 2013 ? The King still says Toyota is an option, hope its there they switch to.
By the end of the summer because they have to start preparing for next year. And if RPM leaves Ford, that likely means finding a new home. Doubt Roush will want the shop on his property as it is now.
I am confused on whether Jr. finished on the lead lap or not last week. I know up until Daytona, he was the only driver to complete every lap. With the wreck, I just assumed he would have gotten a DNF. But my son saw somewhere that he was listed as finishing 8 seconds behind the leader. So does he still hold that record this year or not?
Just double checked for you. Dale Jr. did finish on the lead lap.
The Monster car Kyle drove at Daytona was awesome.
Yep,like that paint scheme a lot. Wish it were in Cup.
WHY DOES NASCAR FIL TO ADMIT THAT THERE IS AN ATTENDENCE PROBLEM? THE TURNOUT FOE THE COKE 400 WAS AWFUL. ALSO, I JUST RECENTLY FOUND OUT THAT DAYTONA USA HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR A YR & A 1/2 BUT DAYTONA STILL KEEPS THE WINNER'S CAR..... WHY?
First, they've closed the back stretch seats for a few years. The front looked pretty solid to me. NASCAR knows there are problems, but there are attendance problems in every sport. NASCAR, however, appears to be getting a bigger hit than most because it requires a weekend instead of a day commitment for many fans.
If newman is not retained by SHR, is the #39 team shut down or will it be run on a if we have sponsorship basis? and if newman is gone, who do you believe is in the 39 come 2013?
If sponsorship isn't there, shut down. Might see some of that crew go to Patrick's car.
Hi Newt, any news if Joey is close to signing back with JGR and potential sponsors.
Nothing lately, but will check at the track this weekend. Been kind of involved in Allmendinger news.
Mr. Newton! How can we get involved in the "Turn 4" columns (I noticed you've had some fans chime in the past few weeks)?
I'll ask and post an answer later in the chat. Honestly don't know. Imagine send them to my boss. We're also planning to launch something new in the next week or two that will be like Your Turn or Turn 5 just for the fans.
Which story has affected YOU more: AJ Allmendinger's positive drug test, or Hope Solo's?
Allmendinger's by far. But where there is Hope there is ... well just go on our raceday live chat and you'll see her pop up.
will Kurt Busch sign with RPM if there still in the Ford camp in 2013 ?
Wouldn't rule it out, but all depends on sponsorship. If he had one that would stick with him at RPM they'd make the move in a heartbeat.
If A.J.'s suspension is upheld, who do you think will have his ride for the rest of the season? Do you think it should go to a Cup driver who is looking for a ride, or should Penske stick with Hornish Jr.?
Hornish Jr. And I believe he'll be the front-runner for the 22 in 2013, although if his NW sponsors are willing to follow him to Cup Penske would look for somebody else to fill the 22, like Logano or Newman, maybe even a Vickers.
If Dinger's B sample is positive do you think that Dinger is done in Nascar?
Hi Newt, are drivers tested during the off season? Would they have to worry if things got out of hand with drugs in Vegas during Champion's week? Also, what if AJ took something that wasn't illegal in the eyes of the government? Does that give him a better chance of staying with Penske or continuing to race once he goes through rehab (assuming he's guilty)?
If it is illegal in the eyes of NASCAR's liste of banned substances it is illegal. No excuse. Drivers I don't believe are testedin the offseason, but they are tested in the preseason and right up to the final race.
The King says Toyota Racing is still an option in 2013, are the chances good the King goes to Toyota ?
King will say Volkswagen remains an option until he has no options.
Feet to the fire, who is your title pick as of today. I've just got a feeling that Jr. pulls it off this year.
Jimmie Johnson. Sorry. I picked Kyle Busch before the season, but JJ looks awfully strong to me.
Why won't Nascar give teams more latitude with bodies and gear rations at the plate tracks? That will creat more variation between cars and allow guys to pass more--while bringing the crew chiefs back into the equation.
I'd like to see that, too. But NASCAR likes to keep a tight grip to keep the field level.
At this point in the season, are Kenseth, Earnhardt, Biffle and Johnson going to go for wins instead of points? Are ANY of those guys going to be disappointed when the chase starts and they have to climb upward again?
No, they won't be disappointed. And I believe they go for wins most weeks.
So will Jimmy Fenning follow Matt Kenseth to JGR ? and what car do you think MK will Drive . . . also WHos in the 22 next year
Wouldn't surprise me, but still too early to tell. I don't see Matt in the 20 if Logano is re-signed. Not sure what number he'll have. As for 22, I'd go with Sam Hornish Jr.
Hi Newt - hope you are feeling better! Also "shocked" about AJ, but as you said, who knows. Seems thought AJ is getting a ton of support from Mike Shank and the Penske camp. Do they know something we don't?
I am. Thanks. Was shocked as well. And the support is not unusual, but it's too early to read too much into that.
Will Keselowski and Smoke both be in the top ten (as opposed to a WC Spot) and if they do, is it going to take two wins for the WC Spot?
I don't see either falling out of the top 10. Still think one of the wild card spots will need two wins and the other will be one.
Is the 16 team frustrated with running near the front all night until the last lap crash, or are they enthused with a good performance all night?
Not frustrated. That happened in a plate race. Can't let one race get you down.
Why wont Nascar reveal the drug he tested positive for wouldnt his fellow drivers want to know ?
Most sports don't reveal the drug. Don't blame them. Too many legal implications. Plus, you don't want to toss the name out before the B sample comes in. You don't want to label the driver.
Back to the Turn 4 questions, if you want to get involved send a letter or email to my editor, K. Lee Davis.
Sorry I slowed down. Had an interview with a top Penske official that just called. Had to do some multi-tasking.
My son and I are headed to Loudon for our first race. Any tips? Must eat foods? Must see venues?
Wrong person to ask about must-eat foods since I have been cut off due to recent heart issues, but there are a few places near the track where you can get some good seafood. Go for the lobster. I usually stay in Concord or Manchester, and there's a great Mexican place in an old jail in Concord. Try candlepin bowling if you've never done that. Hope that helps. I'll be there too.
will Marcos Ambrose leave Petty if they leave Ford ? if so, where do you see Marcos going ? and who replaces him at Petty in 2013 ?
Think Marcos is safe. Can't say the same thing about Almirola. I believe he's gone.
Folks keep talking about Kurt getting a top level ride next year. Impossible. Seriously impossible. NASCAR's sponsor driven business model won't allow it. He can't even attract a small dollar sponsor for Finch, how could he possibly attract a HUGE dollar sponsor for a good team. Sponsors don't care if you win races. They care about image. Period. Kurt will spend the rest of his career fading away in 3rd rate cars for that reason.
The organization would have to help with the big-name sponsor, convince them that Kurt has changed. I agree they care about image. They also care about winning. It's still too early to give up on a talent like Kurt.
Did anybody else feel like the 7 car (Nationwide) got a little antsy just prior to her wreck? She was weaving in and out like she was in an Indy car again. Maybe she was struggling to control, but it seemed an awful lot like she forgot how to drive NASCAR for a minute...and paid for it.
Not necessarily her. There were a lot of antsy people late in the race going for positions. What happened to her was just unfortunate. Bad luck.
Can Tony Stewart roll into the Chase with 5 wins?
Well, he's great at Indy, Pocono, Richmond ... sure.
Heinz had a car early in the 90's. I think Jimmy Spencer drove it and yes it was #57
Hi Newt:How do you think the #48 team will do on Sunday? Thanks!
New Hampshire is a great track for JJ. Hard to pick a top 5 without including him in it.
I have to ask. Since you are picking Gordon to win this week, Do you think he has a shot at making the Chase?
I do. He'll need two wins to get there, but if he can get one win and stay in the top 10 the remaining races he might have a chance to move into contention for a one-win wild card spot.
is the dinger done
Hate to speculate, but it doesn't look good.
I think Taylor (VA) was asking what you thought about red flagging a race if a caution comes out with less than 10 to go, right? Sucks to have a crash with 9 to go, and then they run 9 caution laps and only 2 green to end the race. I like the idea.
I agree, but that all figures inot fuel mileage strategy.
Good afternoon,Can you explian the infraction for Smoke and Dillon...what exactly was loos and what was the gain??Thnaks!
There was an open cooling hose in the cockpit. I'm not an engineer, but would suspect it had something to do with keeping the engine cooler since that was a major concern at Daytona.
Nascar should hire me I know exactly how to solve the daytona and dega packages. NO tandem drafting, cars can air draft and minor contact is allowed as long as it does not exced 1 second and the body styles remain the same as all the other tracks and penaltys for staying hook to one anothers bumper will result in a stop an go penalty for both offenders. Thoughts? this wil solve cooling, excessive crashes and bring back the highline that couldnt go at daytona. See Mr France and Mr helton should hire me i am a pragmatic thinker could help them avoid all this hastle.
Uh, what's your day job?
Newt - Never mind on my original question...appears AJ tested for a stimulant and his camp is collecting OTC meds and other meds to see what may have caused this slightly above tolerance. Per AJ camp being posted on twitter from all sorts of reporters.
Yes, saw that too while I was chatting. At this point I don't know enough to comment. Remember, Jeremy Mayfield insisted his was a combination of Claritan D and Adderall.
Pure driving ability ....who is the best free agent on the market right now?
Kurt Busch. No question.
And that's because Matt Kenseth has a deal.
If Newman changes teams, any way the #39 could go with him?
My guess is the 39 points would go to Patrick to guarantee her in the first five races if she's not guaranteed already with what the 10 car has done.
Whats the difference between an A sample and B? Like number 1 and 2? I am confused
They take one sample and then split it into A and B. Two samples from one sample.
I know it's early to judge, but AJ has a fairly recent DUI, and now a failed drug test. He's not accomplished enough as a driver to overcome that and retain sponsors in this environment. I suspect that he's done in NASCAR.
You're not alone in your thoughts.
I would not mind a halftime in NASCAR if they did it like soccer and have all the commercials at halftime. I know never happen.
I've proposed that before as well. Could be cool. Make it more like two heat races.
Is there anyway you can get me a hot pass for bristol this august? or phx in november? It would be really cool, id owe ya lunch?
No promises, but can see.
Do you think Jeremy Mayfield really has someone lined up that wants to put him in a Cup car? I find that a little hard to believe considering everything that's happened the last 3 years... seems like there would be quite a few talented drivers in Cup & Nationwide that would be more attractive to a new owner
He says so. But even if he does, he'd have to get through legal issues and then go through NASCAR's road to recovery. Lot to overcome.
Just wondering why we don't see water sponsors, like Arrowhead, Dannon, Desani, Evian, etc. in Nascar?
Desani is part of Coke. Aquafina is part of Pepsi.
David, can we go back to the 48's crash at Daytona for a second? He was hit from behind, but he was still in the groove when he was slowing down to hit pit road. Shouldn't he have ducked below the yellow line to slow down? Where are the guys behind him supposed to go? Interested in your opinion.
Johnson was slowing down to go to pit road. Johnson said he motioned with his hands he was going to pit, but somebody didn't get the message and ran all over him. He was trying to keep as much speed as possible until the last second before pitting to keep positions. He did all he should have done.
Green-white-checker at daytona and talledega? It takes a lap to get up to speed. Not sure it works all that great on those tracks
Was thinking the same thing. Maybe they should make it green-green-white-checkered on plate tracks.
In honor of the WSOP, who is the best poker player in NASCAR?
New energy drink that AJ just signed as a sponsor called "Fuel in a bottle" could be the culprit. This new drink has caused other people (not in NASCAR) to fail drug tests already.
You're not the first to suggest that, but would hope and think that NASCAR and the lab ruled that out before the suspension.
I say Mayfield will return to Cup with Ray Evernham and Rusty Wallace as co-owners
I say you need to be tested.
I read your article about Mayfield saying that a wealthy businessman would help bring him back to NASCAR. Is that even a remote possibility?
Just curious if your Dr. recommended taking Co-Q10 or Red Yeast Rice. It's good for the heart... helps breakdown cholesterol.
No, but my wife just read that and will add it to the menu. I'm off cheeseburgers and paradise.
Junior was quoted last weekend as saying his New Hampshire car is a rocket. Do you think he could pull off a win this weekend? There are some guys that are consistantly very good there that he would have to beat.
He's been fast everywhere this year, so no reason to think this will be an exception.
Will we ever see IRL cars at Daytona or Dega? If not, Why?
No. Too fast. Somebody would be killed.
Any rumors on what joeys sponsor could be
None yet, but I wouldn't rule out Dollar General or GameStop.
What NW drivers you think are underrated?
Allgaier, Hornish to name a few.
That's it for me folks. Thanks for all the questions. Looking forward to keeping you informed from the track this weekend. As usual, follow me on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn.
