Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the special Thursday chat. Big weekend coming up with Khan-Garcia on HBO and Chisora-Haye on Epix. And Glen Johnson is back in action to headline tomorrow's ESPN FNF card. Also was a big week with the Martinez-Chavez Jr. press tour going on and the annoucement of Saul Alvarez-Josesito Lopez. So plenty to discuss. Let's get to it.

DR (london)

anything Haye can do on Saturday to redeem himself to you and end the TOE taunting?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

No.

@MrTactic (Halifax, Canada)

Hey Dan, do you think there is any chance of Kelly Pavlik being Lucian Bute's in between fight before rematch with Froch?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I think that is pretty unlikely but would love it if happened.

jose (miami, fl)

hey dan! any final numbers on the Pac-Bradley PPV's?

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

They never made a formal announcement but those in the industry as well as Arum say it was a bit over 900,000.

James (Parts Unknown)

I hear Victor Ortiz's jaw is no longer wired shut. Have you heard about timeframes for him getting back in the ring?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Richard Schaefer and Victor's manager, Rolando Arellano, say he is probably out at least for six months.

Dan (England)

You posted the shortlist for next Wlad opponent - who do you to see him fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

I think if Chisora beats Haye on Saturday the likely fight would be Wlad vs Chisora. If Chisora loses, I'd like to see Wladimir fight Tyson Fury.

Ronak (NY)

Didn't you once say that Chavez Jr vs Martinez would never happen? Really nailed that one, didn't ya?

Dan Rafael
  (12:04 PM)

Well I'm glad I was wrong. Didn't think Top Rank would make the fight and quite happy they did. Credit where credit is due.

JR (Los Angeles)

Will the bad blood between Top Rank and GBP ever go away? There egos are another reason why people believe boxing is going down the toilet. I'm going to have to be channel surfing on Sept 15 to watch boxing. They need to grow up.

Roy (Reno)

Dan, with Ring making the Khan-Garcia fight for the Ring Belt, has it officially joined the ranks of the other alphabet titles?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I think it's a horrible decision and strong disagree with it and the new policy for filling titles. The concept was that a Ring title was supposed to be SPECIAL. Now it's not with the way it is being handled and I do not find it credible anymore.

Jeff (Louisville, Ky)

I really want the Canelo/Lopez fight to be a good one but Canelo just seems so much bigger. Is there going to be a catch weight? Does Lopez have a chance?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

From what I am told it's 1 154-pound max fight. No catch weight. It's a mismatch it seemd to me. I know Lopez will come to fight and give everything he has but it is very hard to see him standing up to a much bigger guy who is as young and fresh as Canelo is.

Alex (London)

How do you see the Haye vs Chisora fight going?Do you see Kell Brook becoming a world champion within the next year? I do!

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

If Haye comes to fight and not run like he did with Wladimir, it will be a good fight. As for Brook, I think he certainly could cherry pick a title at some point in the next year. It's going to be all about getting the right opportunity.

Guillermo Rigondeaux (Miami)

Why is Top Rank scared to put Nonito in with me?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

You're a beast and you mean absolutely nothing to the public and bring zero money to the table, at least for now. You have like 11 pro fights. You're time will come.

Rick (Marina, ca)

Whats up Dan, well so much for GB history announcement, Lopez is going gey smashed, how can he go from 140 to 154, his body doesn't even look like one that can do that

Stronzo (San Jose)

can ESPN force you to cover Canelo/lopez over martinez/Jr on sept 15? who makes that call?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

There's no debate and the answer is obvious.

Marv (Lunch)

Anything in the works for Carlos Molina at 154? I know there's a few Carlos Molina don't want you to mix them up.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Nothing at the moment unfortunately after he was brutally robbed by the referee against Kirkland.

Steveball (Concord, CA)

I saw you mentioned Rigo-Marroquin as possible for Nonito-Arce card. Is Nonito-Arce agreed to & any mention of when and where that would take place?

Dan Rafael
  (12:10 PM)

Nonito-Arce is in the planning stages and likely will be in late October/early November. Top Rank has to get with HBO to hammer out the date, but the fight is likely to happen. As for the venue, could be LA, could be Vegas. Not determined yet. They cant go get a venue until they have a better idea of a specific date from HBO.

Mikey (Levittown, NY)

Do you think HBO was secretly wishing that Keith Thurman got the Canelo fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Guillermo Rigondeaux (Miami )

In order to secure a fight with Nonito, I need my wife to tweet his wife

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

LOL!!! It worked for Vazquez!

Ronak (NY)

Talking to people in the industry, is there a general feeling the Showtime is becomes GBP's personal network?

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Yes, as long as you're in the US.

Rick (Marina, ca)

How about this for double header Donaire vs Arce with Salido vs Garcia undercard, that would a awesome card

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

That is very possible.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

If you missed it, here's my story on Khan being given one of the belts back: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8158391/amir-khan-reinstated-wba-junior-welterweight-champion

JR (Los Angeles)

Will Josesito be allowed to bring a hammer into the ring, as he is being set up to take a beat down. Josesito deserves a shot on a big stage, but he is too small for Canelo.

Aaron (MI)

Your predicton for Khan vs Garcia?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

I think Khan stops Garcia.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, I appreciate your coverage of the HW division. It's still a glamour division in boxing -- as evidenced by the massive crowds the Klitschkos draw. It's a shame more American writers don't devote as much attention.

Dan Rafael
  (12:17 PM)

I have a worldwide audience of readers who enjoy reading about fights other than the ones that take place in the United States. Obviously, most of my writing is geared around those events, but boxing is a world sport and heavyweights are important. So I cover them extensively.

Drew (Houston)

Why will Donaire take the Arce fight? Arce holds no title at 122, it doesn't seem to fit into to Donaire's masterplan. Thanks Dan!

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

Great attraction fight, money to be made and probably exciting. Very simple reason.

Mike (Houston)

Who do you think the next opponent for Donaire should be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I'm fine with Arce. I'd prefer Mares but we know that's not happening.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Is Adrian Broner really the problem?

Dan Rafael
  (12:19 PM)

He will be for Vicente Escobedo.

jackie (spring lake nc)

Any chance you'll give a heads up when olympic boxing is to be shown

Dan Rafael
  (12:20 PM)

I have not seen the full NBC schedule yet but if it's like 2000, 2004 and 2008 there will be EXTENSIVE coverage of the Olympic boxing tournament. In past years, they've had it on during the day on MSNBC or CNBC. You know NBC Sports Net will have tons of Olympics too this year, maybe boxing. I have to hunt down the sked.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

I've seen someone say in boxing forums, on more than one occasion, that Oscar De La Hoya took a dive after that bodyshot by Bernard Hopkins when they fought years ago. Never believed that myself. Was there anyone credible in the media that shared the same sentiment at the time?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

Not that I know of and not for one minute to I believe that. What would have been Oscar's incentive? If he beat BHop and became undisputed middleweight chamoion that would have been MASSIVE. Typical nonsense conspiracy theory.

Dave (Fairfield, CT)

Any word on who will headline FNF on August 17th on ESPN?

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

I think Karim Mayfield in San Francisco.

Chris (Boston)

After watching Javier Fortuna destroy Cristobal Cruz, should he be considered to fight Broner in the next 12 months?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Fortuna is a tremendous prospect. That could be a very interesting fight. But I see them being on different paths right now. I figure Broner by this time next year will be at lightweight anyway.

james (ireland)

do you think chavez will take a drug test this time? i know you say he did but andy lees not convinced!

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Nevada doesn't screw around with its drug testing so I am quite certain he will pee.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Is Yohnny Perez retired?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Yes, he announced that ages ago.

Adam (Los Angeles, CA)

Will gamboa/rios ever happen or is it a pipe dream?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

At this point, forget about it. Ain't happening.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

Any comments after seeing the 2 Days feature on Adrien Broner?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

As usual, a very enjoyable and entertaining 15 minutes from HBO. No hair brushing but I liked it.

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Weights from London: Chisora 247, Haye 210.

James (Parts Unknown)

Are you buying into the rumors that Ricky Hatton is trying to make a comeback?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

That is not true. Bad rumor.

Steveball (Concord, CA)

I know I ask this every week but any info on SHO's 7/28 cofeature/undercard? I know I'll have a great time there but I don't feel Guerrero-Aydin is a stand alone fight...

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

There will be a co-feature but hasnt been formally announced yet. I've heard it probably is Shawn Porter vs Alfonso Gomez.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

I can't wait for the Martinez and Chavez faceoff, with all the trash talking between them.

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

They are filming that I think today or tomorrow in NY.

Ammad (Long Island)

How come Sadam Ali doesn't get any love? He seems like a real up and coming fighter

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

He doesnt fight enough, has fought nobidies and has no promoter.

Jeff (Louisville, Ky)

Super bummed that Pirog is out for Golovkin. Don't know much about Proksa but I'll trust your judgement on it being a good fight. Who could be next for Golovkin if he wins? This guy is dangerous. I see a future of big names ducking him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Proksa is a very good fighter but only one name being mentioned for Golovkin. Proksa just fought last Saturday and regained the Euro middleweight title. If the fight does happen, he is definitely dangerous for Golovkin.

Mat (portland, OR)

Hey Macho Man Dandy Savage what time does the Epix fight start? Going to have to try and stream that bad boy from my buddies wedding.

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

We are on the air at 4:30 pm ET, same as last week. The reason I am chatting today instead of on Friday is because I will be on a train to NY for the telecast during the time I normally chat. Going up a little earlier than usual. Have tix to tomorrow night's Yankees game.

Joe (PA)

Could you see a Chris Arreola vs Tony Thompson fight happening?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

You never know, but who would care right now?

Chris (Detroit)

I can't remember his name, and not like I could spell it if I could, but how high do you see the ceiling for the Polish Heavyweight who just fought on FNF last week? He seems like he hits like a mac truck!

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

Magomed Abdusalamonv (I think I got the spelling right). He was impressive. I've seen a few of his fights and he is certainly a prospect. You dont see a lot of southpaw heavyweights with excellent power. Also, he is Russian not Polish.

Danny (LA)

Dan, I loved the feed this time around online on Epixhd.com no buffering or freezing or blury picture. It was great. you guys are doing an awesome job! Can't wait for this weeks fight!

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

Thanks. Hope we get a good fight this weekend.

Joe (Vancouver)

Good article on Wlad's next oppponent. Who would you choose? I wouldn't mind seeing him in with Mariusz Wach (who is actually a bigger man) or perhaps Dereck Chisora if he beats Haye.

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Wach is just sooooooooooooooooooooooo slow. Bad situation for him.

Charles (DFW)

Going back to the question of the RIng title, isn't it odd the 140 title just happens to be between two GBP fighters when GBP controls the magazine?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

I dont think it was done for that reason. So, yeah, it looks bad but I dont think that's the reason. I just believe the new policy is seriously, seriously flawed and renders the title meaningless.

Anthony (Key West, FL)

Dan what do you think about Kelly Pavliks performance in his last few fight and do you see anything big for him soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

He's looked a little rusty. The first two fights of his recent run were against really weak opponents and he dominated. He blew out Jaco and then beat the crap out of Sigmon. Rosinsky was a much better grade of opponent. Yes, Pavlik won, quite handily, but he looked still a little off. Not sure if it's just him getting back in the groove or the years or hard living have taken their toll.

Anthony (Houston)

Hey is there a reason for the Thursday chat instead of Friday?

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

Yes, I am going to NY tomorrow for Saturday's Epix show and leaving earlier than usual because I have Yankee tickets tomorrow night.

JMack (Toronto)

Why does the EPIX online stream work for US Only... Where's the appreciation for the boxing fans north of the boarder? And was there a build-up show for Haye-Chisora like the Bute-Froch one. I can't remember the name.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

It's geoblocked. Epix owns the North American rights and can't show it outside of the US.

Rick (Marina, Ca)

Whats up with the other Marquez, Rafa, any news.

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Juan Manuel has nothing scheduled right now. I think he still is hoping for another Pacquiao fight in November. Rafael fights Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. on Aug. 4 in Puerto Rico.

Salomón Gaxiola (Mexico)

Happy 50th birthday to Julio Cesar Chavez "El Gran Campeon Mexicano" from the fight freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yes, today is the big day.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Who were you more shocked to see test positive, Peterson or Berto?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Equal. Nothing really shocks me when it comes that sort of thing.

Jesse (El Mirage, AZ)

Dan, is Haye-Chisora a free view on epix's website?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

You can get a free trial to watch the Chisora-Haye fight here: http://epx.ms/dR64ml

Tommy (Detroit)

I have been guilty of making Haye and Chisora jokes but I really think this could be an explosive fight... and am looking forward to some bombs.

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Ditto.

Nick (DE)

Any rumors to what will be under Chavez-Martinez?

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Possibly the Rigondeaux-Marroquin fight I mentioned earliery. Possibly Mike Alvarado in one fight. Lou DiBella also has a spot on the PPV for one of his guys and plans to put on Matthew Macklin, who is always in good fights.

Jeff H (Blaine, MN)

Canelo's title reign and they way he actually got the belt are becoming a joke. When is he gonna fight someone legit?

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

Many people have been asking that. I felt like his fight with Ryan Rhodes was legit. Even Alfonso Gomez wasn't half bad of a matchup. But he is being matched quite softly. The Mosley fight was Mosley in name only.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

If GBP and Top Rank ever do co-promote a fight, will there be a metal fence in between Oscar and Arum?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley! They did have a fence between Chisora and #Toe yesterday.

JD (Oakland, Ca)

if Chavez Jr can get past Sergio, and Andre Ward can get past Dawson, do you see a possible super fight in the making?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

That is cruel and unusual punishment for Chavez.

Michael (OKC)

Any word on who Malignaggi's opponent at Barclays is going to be?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Nothing solid yet.

Chris (Berkeley)

Maybe I'm missing something. But, what's wrong with the Khan fight being for the Ring title? According to their rankings Khan and Garcia are 1-2. Isn't the problem that Garcia is ranked 2?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Yes, that is exactly the problem.

Carlos (Toronto)

Do you take any of that stuff that James Toney says about you personally? Sorry you have to deal with that abuse.

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I take it with a grain of salt from an angry, brain damaged and broke fighter. I am not mad at James. I just feel sorry for him.

Stronzo (San Jose)

whats next for andre direll?

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

Not Adonis Stevenson.

Anthony (Houston)

Next step for Khan, assuming he dispatches of Garcia?

Dan Rafael
  (12:44 PM)

Good question. I think if the Peterson thing is ever resolved he would still like to avenge his loss. But I could also see a legit possibility that he could land a fight with Mayweather at the end of the year if Floyd decides to fight this fall after he gets out of jail.

Mickey (Chicago)

Really psyched to go to FNF tomorrow night, Glen Johnson is always entertaining. What do you make of the main event? Oh, and how badly did Castillo miss weight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

We'll see if Glen can still go against a very untested opponent. Glen had elbow problems and never had surgery. Opted for rehab instead. So who knows? As for Castillo, I spoke to his people earlier today and they swear he was 146 today. We'll see. But as far as Castillo goes, who gives a crap?

clay (chattanooga)

any chance CBS changes their mind and puts Canelo on during the day?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

You never know but I would say 0% chance.

Joydeep (Philippines)

Were you suprised by the video James Toney did in response to the article you wrote on his fight with Adamek?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

No, that's typical James. I'm glad he reads my work.

Anthony (Houston)

I see that Guerrero-Aydin is for an interim 147 title, but has Guerrero ever fought at 147?

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

No, so that's a farce. Heaviest he ever has been was 138 for the Casamayor fight (in which he was dropped). Robert is an excellent talent but this should not be for a title.

Harold (NYC)

Has Showtime decided on Antonio Tarver's future?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

I dont think so specifically, but I am told he has also been benched for the Aug. 11 Cloud-Pascal telecast.

John (San Fran)

Danimal, do you think Golden Boy is just trying to mess with Top Rank by scheduling Canelo on Showtime at the same time Top Rank has a pay per view or is it something else?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Wish I knew.

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Hey Dan - Who is in consideration for Adamek if Toney is out. Jennings maybe? Did Duva finally come to her senses?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

No, not Jennings. Read this and you'll see: http://espn.go.com/blog/dan-rafael/post/_/id/1429/tourney-to-determine-klitschko-foe

Brett (San Diego)

Dan, Does your relationship (or lack thereof) with David Haye have any impact on the formatting plans for Saturdays telecast?

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

None whatsoever.

Jose (Lennox, CA)

What are we freaks supposed to do tomorrow at work at noon (eastern)? I predict a lot of unusual Friday productivity at the work place.

Dai (Panama)

Whats your thoughts on Burns v Mitchell? I thinks its a barnstormer and if Mitchell prepares properly he could win late TKO , much more interesting that those two plums fighting in UK this weekend!

Dan Rafael
  (12:50 PM)

Very, very good fight and a good chance we will have it on Epix.

Joe (Ellsworth AFB)

Speaking of Floyd, Congrats to him on the ESPY last night.

Kevin (Dallas)

Really? GBP put in Joseito with Canelo? C'mon K9 would've been a better more legit fight than this. I guess Oscar couldnt get Fernando Vargas for Canelo

Joe (Atlanta)

Dan I see your mention of Rigondeaux vs Robert Marroquin. Just a year or two ago Marroquin was a prized prospect of TR. Seems like a dangerous fight for him. Have they begun to sour on his potential? Seems like a huge step up for him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

It is a big step up but Marroquin and his team want the fight and Marroquin is a good right-handed puncher. If the fight happens, Rig will obviously be the favorite.

John (Greensboro, NC)

Dan. first off I love reading your stuff. Why is Donaire clearly ducking rigo

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

He is not ducking him. He brings very little to the table right now. The onus is on Rig to make himself into a guy the public clamors to see Donaire fight. Bottom line is Donaire doesnt need Rig whatsoever. He has multiple attractive fights in his future even if he never faces Rig.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

In pro football and baseball you have to be retired for five years before an athlete is eligible for the HOF. How many years does a boxer have to be retired for HOF eligibility?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Also five.

Joe (NJ)

Haha. didn't know Toney did a response video to your article. Just watched it on youtube, and i have no idea what he was saying

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

Cliffs Notes: Apparently I'm fat, better watch my back and he's the best heavyweight in the world.

James (Toney)

What are the odds I understand what Higgs Boson means?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

chris (london)

why is haye-chisora only a 10 rounder?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

No idea. Was originally a 12 and is now a 10.

ralph (CT)

Just looking at JM Marquez's record, besides going up in weight to fight Floyd you can easily argue he's never lost a fight in his entire career.

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Yup.

Mike (Colorado Springs)

Great fight last week for Donaire. He certainly won, but the scorecards were a little wide weren't they?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

A tad.

Horn (Vegas)

I had bacon and eggs for breakfast this morning. #HISTORY

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Obviously. They have matchmakers who know exactly what they are doing with that sort of thing. There's a reason why Bruce Trampler is in the Hall of Fame and Brad "Abdul" Goodman will be someday.

Stronzo (San Jose)

What is going on with The Ring ratings?? How did Danny Garcia end up as # 2 in the 140 division??

Dan Rafael
  (12:57 PM)

I haven't the foggiest idea.

Mickey (Chicago)

Still can't get EPIX on comcast here in Chicago, all the Chicago freaks should call them up and demand it. My free internet trial is over and now I have no way to watch the fight this weekend.

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

Try to get another trial.

Dan (England)

Shame. Chisora is boring, Fury is all over the place!

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

How is Chisora boring? He made a good fight with Klitschko (even if one-sided), he hammered Helenius is a good fight, the Furty fight he lost was a good fight. You're crazy. I think Chisora is consistently one of the most entertaining heavyweights out there.

Tom (Newport Beach)

Dan, based on your own experiences, how much is having a thick skin a prerequisite for doing the job you have?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

A big one.

Roy (Reno)

Was it Oscar who started the CBS rumor?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

It wasnt a rumor. They tried very hard and pressed very hard to have Alvarez on CBS.

Ronak (NY)

Josisto Lopez?!! He's a solid fighter but COMON MAN. hes about twenty pounds lighter than Canel

Garth (Norwalk, CT)

So Goldenboy's historic announcement is that they are giving us a Canelo mismatch on Sept 15th and it will not be on CBS.

Jacob (Clovis, CA)

Dan, you recently wrote an article questioning the wisdom of allowing James Toney to continue fighting. As a professional, you have an obligation to write the truth as you see it, and sometimes that doesn't sit well with the persons you write about. Does itbother you when other people who hold themselves as journalists don't have the stones to say the truth as they see it and instead just simply cozy up to the fighter. It seems to me that those who do that lack credibility.

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

Or that those people never had any in the first place. If I had no credibility some people wouldnt be so up in arms about what I wrote. It's because I do have credibility that when I write something that may touch a nerve some people get all jacked up. I write for myself, for ESPN and for my readers. That is my concern, not what a fighter or promoter thinks.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Surprise Dan. Andre Dirrell backed out fight.

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I find it amusing that the reason given was that there was not enough time to prepare. What has he been doing since December????????????????????

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Is HBO only airing the Khan fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

Correct.

Craig (Cincinnati)

Dan, are you coming into town for the Broner fight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:04 PM)

No sir.

Charles (DFW)

I understand why you say Donaire doesn't need Rigo, I get the economics, and Rigo might never bring the $$$. But Donaire should fight him just to prove he's better. Where is the pride? He can't say he's better because he hasn't proven it.

Dan Rafael
  (1:05 PM)

Donaire has pride, which is why he has faced fighters like Darchinyan in his prime, Montiel, even Vazquez. But it's also business and fighting Rig right now does not make business sense, especially when there are fights for Donaire that ARE appealing AND better in terms of money and exposure.

Bill (Pittsburgh)

Dan, non-boxing question: Is Penn State the worst sports story you've come across since you started covering sports?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

It's pretty bad. What went on there makes boxing look clean.

Randy (Charlotte, NC)

How can SHO and HBO just sit buy and watch EPIX take all these interesting fights -- Froch-Bute, the Klitschkos and the Haye-Chisora war this weekend? Their lack of interest is mind boggling to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Rob (@brewffx) (Halifax, Canada)

Little disappointed you didn't say Dit-toe in reference to the Haye-Chisora question...

Dan Rafael
  (1:07 PM)

Sorry Freak. What was I thinking? #toe

Doug (Lexington)

Chat Guidelines for Newbies:1) Do your homework (i.e. read the blog, twitter feed, etc.);2) Know your fighters and their promoters. Fights often get (or dona??t get) made because of promoter relationships;3) Rude or really ignorant comments could get you banished;4) A particularly funny comment will have Dan asking Shirley to pay you. How much you get paid depends on the number of exclamation points you get; 5) There are a number of sanctioning bodies (all wretched to some degree or other) who offer belts for sale to virtually anyone. I, for example, was crowned the WBC Welterweight I-75 Corridor Champion of the World, for a small sanctioning fee of course; and6) Dona??t forget to attend the annual Labor Day BBQ. Fresh brewed lemonade, PEDs Dispensers feat. Andre Berto and Lamont Peterson, vegan burgers and dogs, and a Jim Lampley impersonation contest.

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Max (Spokane)

What's next for Helenius?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

He's got nothing set now. He is coming off shoulder surgery and out until the fall.

Chuck (St. Louis)

Dan, a lot of credit to HBO for hyping Ward-Dawson like it is a PPV fight with 24/7 etc. We need new faces on there and this is a big, legacy fight for both guys (even if it will be a tactical fight rather than Corrales-Castillo).

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

Agreed.

Max (Spokane)

I'm glad Haye and Chisora are fighting. The heavyweight division would be more exciting if its elite contenders would fight each other rather than facing a Klitschko after fighting nothing but tomato cans.

Stan (madison wi)

what next for adamek ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Sept 8 vs TBA (not Toney).

Jeff (Louisville, Ky)

What's next for Bradley? I think it is a mistake for him to stay at 147. I mean, he was a chiseled specimen on the scales but it was clear very early that he couldn't hurt Pacquiao. I feel like he is in a very strange situation.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Right now, Tim and his family are kicking back on vacation. I think there is a good chance we'll see a rematch with Manny on Nov. 10. So that is obviously Tim's biggest fight.

Charles (DFW)

After Doug, I think Shirley's gone bankrupt.

Tito (San Diego)

Dan, just curious, why the chat today instead of tomorrow?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

Do you people read the transcript of what I have already answered? Banishment?

Dave, NJ [via mobile]

If it's a non title 10 rounder, only the ref scores the fight in Britain?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

No because it's for a WBO regional title.

Roy (Reno)

Khan it seems to me is in the weird position of having no base in the US but only fighting here. He is always in exciting fights and is always willing to challenge himself but it seems he left the UK 2 years too soon. Am I wrong?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

What Amir needs to do is follow the Lennox Lewis road map, which is fight in the US but basically for every 2-3 US fights also go home to fight in the UK.

Paul (Carlsbad)

Who is in more denial toney or the paterno family?

Dan Rafael
  (1:12 PM)

Ouch.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

I hope Martinez-Chavez gets some mainstream news coverage, if Chavez' chin is as good as most people think it could be a serious FOTY candidate

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

I agree. It's a very interesting fight on paper and looks like a good one in the ring. I think it will do very well at the gate and PPV. Tickets went on sale today, by the way.

Charles (DFW)

What's up with Hank Lundy-Beltran? I thought he was in line for a title shot?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Lundy cant just sit and wait so he is staying busy and will be on ESPN2.

Slater (West By God Virginia )

DTM how could sportscenter not show highlights of the klitschko fight. I lost money on a bet with MMA fans about that.

Dan Rafael
  (1:18 PM)

SportsCenter most definitely showed Klitschko-Thompson hili. I saw them several times.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

When Epix approached you to cover their fights, were you hesitant at first being that EPIX was new to the fight game?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Not at all. I had written a story about the network getting into boxing. I was later invited to appear as a guest on their first boxing telecast for a post-fight roundtable. They liked how that went and offered me a gig to be on their broadcast team. I was appreciative that ESPN gave me permission to do it and it's been a very enjoyable experience working with the folks at Epix.

Matt (Preston, UK)

Dan, you asked on your twitter which fight this weekend is getting the most interest over here.... Whats the split on your side of the pond?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

I think they're both getting similar attention.

Leo (Chicago)

As far as you know are the following fighters "officially" retired - Valuev, Chris Byrd, Lamon Brewster?

Dan Rafael
  (1:21 PM)

All three as far as I know.

Jimmy (Charleston, WV)

Doug's chat list was good but how good he forget Joel Julio????

Dan Rafael
  (1:22 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Nick (DE)

I find it quite odd that the week of the Khan-Garcia fight, Ring (owned by GB) suddenly decides to drop all PED positives from their rankings suddenly elevating Khan-Garcia to a bout for the Ring title, smells like the WBC to me

Pistol (Parts Unknown)

I recommend google image searching "Kubrat Pulev girlfriend"... looks like he's got the blonde, Bulgarian Rachel Cordingley by his side

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I now want to see Wladimir fight Pulev next!! And again after that. And then again after that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris O. (The Bing, NY)

I am on my third free trial of Epix.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Typically, how long does it take you to write a blog? a few minutes? an hour?

Dan Rafael
  (1:24 PM)

Toe-tally depends on the topic.

Jason (Philly)

Any chance of Bryant Jennings fighting a legitimate, big named heavyweaith in the future? Seth Mitchell maybe?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

I doubt in his next couple of fights but he should get a chance eventually if he keeps winning.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

When was the last major PPV that was also FOTY or a serious candidate for it? Memories failing me over here

Dan Rafael
  (1:27 PM)

Good question. Going back a while I would say Holyfield-Bowe fights. Maybe Holyfield-Tyson I. Barrera-Morales III is another. Morales-Pacquiao I for sure. Cotto-Margarito I.

Dan Rafael
  (1:29 PM)

By the way, Arum announced during the Martinez-Chavez press tour that there will be a Tecate rebate offered for the PPV.

Jonothan Ratcliffe (Williamsburg, MA)

I heard David Haye's favorite movie character of all-time was Toe-Toe in the Wizard of Oz.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Ahhh, an oldie but a goodie.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Tecate rebates r awesome! Great incentive for ordering the PPV.

Danny (Buffalo (NY))

Wlad wasn't as cautious against Thompson as he normally is. Is this going to be a trend, or was it just because he knew Thompson couldn't hurt him.

Dan Rafael
  (1:31 PM)

Dont know, but you're right -- he went after Thompson more than he has other fighters.

Slater (West By God Virginia)

DTM do you think Chisora could eventually rival Mayorga for craziest weigh ins and post fight interviews? I think Its just a matter of time.

Dan Rafael
  (1:32 PM)

He's getting there, that's for sure.

Mario (Bell Gardens, CA)

Danaconda, Happy Thursday! Let me give two quick shout outs if I may: (1) to my pregnant wife who is giving birth to my first child, a sure-to-be fight freak like her dad; and (2) to Chavez Jr. for actually following through and giving Martinez the fight we all want to see (which I think Chavez Jr. will win by decision after his body shots slow Martinez down in the later rounds).

Brooks (New Hampshire)

Dan - Is there anything in the works for Zab?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

Nothing specific at the moment.

Michael (Cincinnati)

Will Golden Boy announce a Corona rebate for Canelo's sparring session?

Dan Rafael
  (1:34 PM)

LOL. Have not heard anything about that. Corona is a new sponsor with Golden Boy so I'm sure as time goes by we'll see more activations from them for the fights they are involved in.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Do you see EPIX ever having a 24/7 or Fight Camp 360 type of show?

Dan Rafael
  (1:35 PM)

Interesting question. Have not heard anything like that mentioned, although there was a good 30-minute preview show for Bute-Froch that was kind of like Fight Camp.

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

Saw someone mention Sergio answered a few questions in english at 1 of the press tour stops, glad to see he's learning, although I hate to think how big of a star he'd be if he'd learned it earlier in his career

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

Here's my just published Chisora-Haye preview: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8159188/david-haye-dereck-chisora-raise-hopes-brawl

mike (lga )

will seth mitchell be on the canelo show?

Dan Rafael
  (1:37 PM)

I dont think so.

Cesar (Chicago)

I just bought my tickets for tomorrows Friday night fights show but I noticed that doors open at 7pm CST...The televised bouts will start at 9pm CST...my question is, will I be able to watch all the fights including the ones that will not be televised?? There is supposedly a lot of them and I doubt we can see them in 2 hours b4 the actual show starts.. never been to an ESPN fight and I thought you would know.

Dan Rafael
  (1:38 PM)

You should be able to see everything. Get there at 7 if you want to see it all and have a great time.

chris (london)

how do you rank the current brit heavyweights? id go Price, Chisora, Haye, Fury. I was ringside for chisora fury and the result had more to do with Chisora being exhausted and out of shape than Fury being impressive. Price looks like the next World Champ after Wlad retires to me.

Dan Rafael
  (1:41 PM)

Based on POTENTIAL I would rank it Price, Fury, Chisora. We already know what Haye can and can't do.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

If Josesito Lopez's win against Ortiz was his Rocky Moment. Then IF Lopez defeats Canelo will that be his cinderella man moment?

Danny (LA)

Dan, have you been to the Tomas and Mack Center? Is it a good venue to see the Chavez vs Martinez fight? Getting my tickets today.

Dan Rafael
  (1:43 PM)

It IS the venue for the fight. Is it a good venue? I'm not a big fan. I've covered several fights there (Calzaghe-Hopkins, Jones-Ruiz, Maskaev-Rahman 2, Pacquiao-Morales 2 and 3 amon them). But the main thing is not the arena. It's the fight you will see. Have fun.

Dan Rafael
  (1:46 PM)

OK Fight Freaks, thanks for chatting a day early. Hope you enjoy a big weekend of fights as well as all of the blogs, features and news stories from the week on the boxing page. Have a great weekend and let's hope everyone's toes are OK and nobody gets glassed. Talk to you next week. Peace.
