Chat with Jesse Rogers

Jesse Rogers
  (1:02 PM)

Hi all, welcome to another off season blackhawks chat. As the future plays a scrimmage at Johnny's IceHouse we can talk about the present. You have one more chance to watch the prospects tomorrow, btw.10 am scrimmage time....lets get to some questions. Fire away!!

Marc (Chicago)

Do you see the Hawks making a move for Luongo or Doan or are they just content with what they have?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:05 PM)

I have never bought into any of the Luongo talk..Im not convinced he wants to come here nor the Hawks want him or should want him so any chatter you here is just that...cause the Hawks mght have a need and hes out there...never been anything credible to show they have talked seriously about it....as for Doan, I smell something fishy there...too public about mutual interest, etc. Maybe Im just jaded..I heard from the get go, he wanted to stay out west...PHX or L.A or something...and when something is as public as this it usually doesnt go down...there are simply more teams with more money that need him more...BUT you never know..maybe its his dying wish to play for Chi..I dont think so..but maybe...so dont hold your breathe

Zack Wolfe (Joliet)

If the hawks lack of offseason additions hurt them in the season and they end up in another first round loss, will the blame fall more on stan bowman or JQ?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:07 PM)

Great question...all despends how the season goes...cant answer that without seeing how things play out...I'd say JQ is in trouble before Stan...but thats without seeing how things play out but def JQ first up right now

Roy (Berwyn)

I give the Hawks credit for going after the big name free agents, but the bottom line is they didn't get anyone of significance. Yes, Detroit and Nashville are worse off than the Hawks, but if we start the season with this team, tell me what you see are the differences that is going to make this a Stanley Cup contender.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:09 PM)

That arguement is pretty simple...a fresh year and approach (and asst coach) with special teams means better in that area considering the talent they have and a bounce back from crawford PLUS a full year with oduya, shaw, carcillo....not knowing new injuries of course...thats how you do it...its not the biggest of leaps but its big...I know one thing...their PK is going to be better...count on that...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:09 PM)

Jesse Rogers
  (1:10 PM)

Im just telling you the arguement not if I agree with that..will wait till end of offseason for that

Greg (Saal)

Any chance of the Hawks signing Shane Doan or Shea Weber or both?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:11 PM)

No way on Weber..simply wont happen for many reasons though I would love to see an offer sheet jsut to force Nash hand but thats too bold...already wrote about Doan

Greg (Winnetka)

What is the deal with Evander Kane? Also, what happened with Parise that led him away from Chicago?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:12 PM)

Why does everyone keep asking me about Evander Kane..he's property of Winnipeg..he cant go anywhere unless traded...It sound like Parise wanted to go home and play in Minny...pretty obvious

Tim (Libertyville)

Shaw and Saad were pleasant surprises last year. Who are some of the younger guys that you see possibly ending up with the Hawks this year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:13 PM)

None at this prospects camp...The usual suspects have a chance...Ben Smith, Pirri, maybe Beach, havent seen him play in a while...Morin...this is a very young group here...Saad of course has a chance to make the team and prob will after hearing Q talk yesterday

Mike (Tucson)

Gut feeling: Will there be a signing or trade by the Blackhawks before the convention?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:15 PM)

Boy, thats a good question....hmm...Ill go ahead and say yes but very hesitantly..just dont know when things will go down but I could see sometihng by end of this month at least...

Ilija (Phoenix)

Is Hammer still on the trade block? Hearing any rumblings as to where he might go?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:17 PM)

I think things may have changed a bit...not hearing it as heavy as before...there was a deal with Edm that could have been had...not for Gagner or someone like that which Im sure someone made up but for like a draft pick...that might a standing offer from Oilers but now Hawks might keep...cause at this rate no reason no dump salary

John (Vernon Hills)

Hey Jesse, Great work this summer. What are the chances that the Hawks have 3 rookies on the team at the start of the year? i.e. Saad, McNeil, and Hutton.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:17 PM)

None

Ryan (Chicago)

Jesse do you believe their is any chance the Hawks make a run and try to get Rick Nash or Bobby Ryan? I feel that if they want to keep up with LA and Vancouver don't they need more scoring and especially if Hossa doesn't come back to the form last year before the injury

Jesse Rogers
  (1:18 PM)

No. Variety of reasons...Nash will cost you a top guy off your roster now so I think they might feel like its running in place...ryan, prob the same...they dont need more scoring...they need a better PP and better defense

Dino (Chicago)

With prospects like Hayes, Morin, Saad, etc. Will they just be brought up and down all season or used as trade bait?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:19 PM)

There is no one that can tell you that...the answer is both...anyone is always trade bait...and IM sure they'll have to dip into the minors due to injuries or ineffectiveness but there is no either/or...Saad I doubt would be traded unless a blockbuster

Phil (Chicago)

I'm pretty sure E Kane was a restricted free agent as of July 1 jesse.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:22 PM)

He is..but that doesnt mean anyhting...you think the hawks are going to do that to Chevy..they have this silly thing where there are few RFA offers just so teams dont drive up the price for another team..surprised players dont claim colusion...so thats why the hawks arent getting him unless a trade which I have heard nothing about

Mark (Pasadena, CA)

Assuming that the Hawks don't sign Doan or make any major trades and that Hossa is healthy, who joins 19, 88, 81 and 10 as top six forwards? Carcillo (if healthy)? Saad? Stalberg? Will it be constantly changing like last year? If it's any combination of those 3, or even if they do sign Doan, doesn't that mean that either 88 or 10 is playing center?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:24 PM)

yes on carcillo for sure, yes on Saad, yes on Stalberg sometimes...and yes on prob changing..unelss they find 6 that are lights out together...but yes is your answer..

Matt (Kabul)

Hi Jesse. What is Bowman waiting for to pull the trigger on a big deal... Can I expect Evander Kane or Luongo next season? Are Sharp or P Kane on the trading block? Thanks.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:25 PM)

No to everything you just asked

Dan (Northbrook)

What kind of attention will Kane get at the convention? Think he will get bombarded with questions about WI? McD going to protect him?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

He'll be there and yes he will be bombarded and no he wont be protected...Im going to Madison this weekend to investigate so I can ask well informed questions

Jesse Rogers
  (1:26 PM)

Im kidding...I am going to madison...but to do what he was doing...:)

Dan (Northbrook)

Why does Bowman refuse to cut ties with some of the Hawks prosepcts? (IE Beach, Ben Smith, Morin) Seems like they're far from making the roster and could potentially benefit another organization...

Jesse Rogers
  (1:27 PM)

How do you know he "refuses"? Are you in on the trade talks...I have no idea...I know a few things like he refused to trade Saad in a deal for Grossman..prob a smart thing...but other than that we dont know...who says anyone wants Kyle Beach? cmon

Paul (NJ)

How far are the Hawks currently under the cap for next year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:28 PM)

About 8 mil

Matt (Gurnee)

Who is going to be our number two center? Kane is not the answer. I'm hoping for a trade where we could potentially fix the number two center problem. We are not going to go far if Kane is our number two center.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:29 PM)

I think its kruger...usually the coach has final say and if Kruger advances like he should I think Q will see that in training camp and go with him...could be wrong of course but thats my guess..his fall back is kane I guess cause bowman likes it..

NJ Dave [via mobile]

Jesse - of young talent, who is most likely available in a trade for a top 6 forward or top 4 defensemen? Saad, McNeill, Hayes, Olsen, or Shaw...and why?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:31 PM)

Saad is the most sought after...I think the Hawks want to keep Olsen if possible..I heard they didnt want him in a trade for Staal early on this offseason..they wanted hammer there instead but pitt wanted olsen...so I guess that means mcneil or shaw or hayes...but I dont see it happeneing...mcneil maybe in a blockbuster...

Michael (LaSalle, IL)

Which kids have really stood out for you at Prospects Camp? Any pleasant surprises?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:32 PM)

Ill give you better assesment in a blog after tomorrow but no doubt Teravainen has showed his skill.first round pick from this year...I cant say a lot after that, theres a couple more, but I will have more after tomorrow..

anfernee detorres (Wachung Hills, NJ)

With my devils losing Parise, and Nashville losing Suter to the Wild, should the west be wary of the Wild? And where do you rank their team in comparison to the Hawks?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:33 PM)

I think they are comers but 2 people dont make a team...Hawks still better if they get the goaltending...but yeah they will slowly get better as they go along here...have a "core" now

Matt (Gurnee)

Jesse, any progress on Hjalmarsson being dealt? I thought the perfect deal would be Hjalmarsson to Edmonton for Gagner. Gagner would have an elite winger to play with in Kane, Hossa or Sharp

Jesse Rogers
  (1:34 PM)

Would be nice, yeah, but Edm had no interest..I think it was more like for a 2nd or 3rd round pick...not a top 6 type of guy...

mike (Chi)

Hey Jesse, since making a great first impression yesterday at the scrimmage, I was wondering if you could tell me why they want to hold terrvainen (sp?) back? Is it a cap thing? Size? I know hes its just the prospects camp but doesnt that bode well for the kid? Thanks.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:35 PM)

Listen, he's small, he's young, he's NEVER gone up against top guys...I mean anything can happen..he was supposed to be a top 5 pick and if he was we would be more inlcined to say he could make it..but too many things to overcome..I talked to agent yesterday...he needs at least a year...Im not saying he or I know for sure but there is a process for most guys except the elite of the elite

Jason (Palatine)

Hey Jessie, I follow free agency pretty close and a Shane Doan or Rick Nash would be great to get. But do you think of some smaller free agents out there. They need a center, what do you think of Kyle Wellwood or Dominic Moore or at wing, Andrei Kostitsyn?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:37 PM)

I like Wellwood if price is right...the others not so much..I think they feel a smaller name at center isnt going to be better than what they have so why do it...but anyway, I like Wellwood but still dont see it happenieng here

Matt (Gurnee)

I really like Doan. I know we don't have the most money to spend but I think a line of him, Toews and Kane could flourish here. Doan brings tenacity, net presence and is a great physical player. I've seen that you don't think Doan will sign here so my question is two part why do you think Doan will not sign here if he leaves Phoenix?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:38 PM)

I stated before some reasons...I say its PHX then L.A. then its up for grabs so there is a chnace..listen for years Doan was my fav non Hawk, I love the guy...so would be great but just get this feeling it wont happen...hope im wrong

Erik (SF, CA)

This may seem like an overreaction, but how can the Hawks truly think they have what it takes to compete. Forget comparison to the Cup team, this team just doesn't match up well with the likes of the last two Cup winners. They're not physical, they don't have strong goaltending and they aren't difficult to play against. So please explain why the 'we like our team' mantra is the pervasive message of the organization?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:40 PM)

101 points in a season without special teams nor goaltending...thats the glass half full approach...now you HAVE to assume a bounce back for goalie and a little better PP and PK...again, you can disagree but those arent outrageous expectations to believe in..they are not. forget about all the rest..hard ti play against, etc. if the Hawks pp is better OR Craw is better they prob win the series against PHX...dont know about the rest but we can agree on that

Chris (Kansas City)

Jesse, while is obviously Broduer is a great goalie... do you think Stan showed interest in him so that the Devils would have to spend more to resign him? As a result, decreasing the probability of the Devils resigning Parise, which was the Hawks player to go after to begin with.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:41 PM)

Um, no. Dont think the Hawks are that crafty...and that seems far fecthed anyway

Paul (Chicago)

Is it true...Coaches are emphasizing/forcing the D to play it safe...bang the puck off the glass to get it out and not the puck possession game the Hawks won the cup with? The Hawks are not a dump and chase team and forwards like Kane need to have the pass on their sticks. I am concerned that Personal and Coaching are not on the same page.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:43 PM)

Emphasizing it where? Have the Hawks had a prac Im not aware of 3 months before training camp? I hope youre not asking about prospects camp cause Im sure thats an indication of what will happen in sept...not. NO, I can tell you that defense is instructed to get the puck to the forwards ASAP...if there is a change in that we'll see come Sept.

Keith (Naperville)

The Blackhawks as currently structured are not a deep playoff team. The last 2 years have proven that. Why the reluctance by Bowman to shake up it's "core" players?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:44 PM)

His feeling is getting rid of a core guy and what he does just means replacing him and why do that when that just causes instibility and the hawks are still a playoff team and anyone can win, etc, etc, etc.

Matt (Lincoln Park)

Given his injury, can we expect Hossa to contribute next year the same way he did this year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:45 PM)

Have no idea...no one does...

Robert (Chicago)

Jesse, there is a lot of chatter about Hammer+Stalberg in a package deal to MTL for Plekanec. Have you heard about this rumor from any of your sources?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:46 PM)

I have heard so many rumors about the two of them its hard to know which is true..makes you wonder if the Hawks simply put it out there the two are avail and have been fielding calls...sometimes goes down like that...I have not hear that SPECIFIC deal, no. But hammer and stalberg being discussed, yes.

Steve (Bedford Park)

What are your thougths on moving Bolland either to 2nd line center or as part of a trade to aquiring a 2nd line center (ie Getlaf for Bolland, Stalberg, prospect (Beach), and 3rd rounder) and picking up a local like Tim Stapleton to fill in on 3rd or 4th line as center. Kreuger can line or wing line 3.

Jesse Rogers
  (1:47 PM)

I have advocated Bolland in a package for a 2nd line center for a while...then slide Kruger in at 3rd C not wing..I'd have no problem with that..maybe thats what they are exploring...in fact they did explore Bolland for Staal...if I know the Hawks they will do a deal that no one sees coming...if they do one at all

Matt (Lincoln Park)

Let's say the 'Hawks stand pat. Do you imagine another scenario like the 'Hawks CLAIMED last year, where they go into the year with the financial flexibility to make a deadline acquisition if need be?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:48 PM)

That will be thier fall back.."we can always make an in season trade" so, yes.

Chris (Indiana)

This "sophomore slump" excuse is ridiculous if you look at Crawford's career stats. The 2.30 GAA from 2010-11 is pretty easily the best full season of his career. Although he had a sub-par season, his 2.72 GAA looks to be right back around his career averages. I don't understand why the Hawks seem content to hand him another year as a starter?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:52 PM)

Well they obviously are not content since they looked elsewhere but I have no prob not trading for someone else's unproven back up and making him a starter...craw has played 2 seasons...so dont know about all that other stuff...he has no OBVIOUS major flaw..again, you can make the case he can rebound...its a gamble though..hence interest in Brodeur..and I think they would have kicke dthe tires on Thomas if he wasnt sitting out

Alex (Northbrook)

Jesse,If an RFA receives an offer sheet and his current team doesn't match, does the player have to accept the offer sheet or is he allowed to turn it down?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:53 PM)

He has to accept it before his team decides on it..thats how it becomes an offer sheet...its nothing until the player agrees..

Jake Payne (Chicago)

Who is the most sensibly tradable player on the Blackhawks right now?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:54 PM)

Hammer...without a doubt...if we're talking non-core guys..sensible contract, decent enough..teams could use him

Brad (Chicago)

Any chance Hawks sign Alexander Semin?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:54 PM)

NO

Brad HT (Elgin)

What rookies/prospects can we expect to see up in the big club this year?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:55 PM)

Saad..

Dino (Chicago)

The 'Hawks keep saying that they're a destination for FA's and guys want to play here, but aside from Andrew Brunette and Sean O'Donnell, I really don't see that. Am I wrong or is Chicago really not a destination for these guys?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:57 PM)

Its kind of a good question..the salary cap is going to determine what is a good destination as well as where a player (like Parise) wants to play...ALL things being equal, sure, Chicago is still a pretty good place...Now, could we make a case that the front office drama and the Hawks very controlling approach with players turns some off, who knows, maybe...but they have it pretty good in a great city so still a draw but not the ONLY draw.

Patrick (Valparaiso)

Similar to the White Sox, I think the Hawks feel they can improve significantly from within (Kruger, Hammer, Leddy, & Crow) this season. I don't agree but then again, no one saw this coming with the Southside either, thoughts?

Jesse Rogers
  (1:59 PM)

Again, thats the glass half full approach and its not crazy as in need to be committed crazy...having said that they did go after some big names so its not like they recognize they have a perfect team either...you can make the case you are making while at the same time no one is getting past thier prime...

Dave (Addison)

Instead of everyone placing the blame on Bowman for not going after All-Star forwards, why dont we turn the attention to the current roster, and the inability of most of the forwards to place defense? If we keep everyone on the roster, and teach Kane, Hossa, Sharp, etc. to play better in their D zone, wouldnt that help minimize goals given up, and give crawford the help and confidence he needs?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:01 PM)

We dont even have to go that far...just get some diff guys to play PK and go all out...take the same team...put PP and PK dead in the middle...thats 110 point team and dangerous in playoffs because of it..

Robert (San Antonio)

I know nobody likes offer sheets-collusion and all that-but I think the Hawks should thrown the kitchen sink at Weber. 10 yrs 75 mil (or more). If the Preds don't match it Keith and/or Hammer have VERY tradeable contracts. Seabrook and Weber on the same D-pairing...sounds too good to be true (which is why it is)

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

I like it..but they wont...and prob take more for weber to sign it since he's UFA next yr..i mean suter got 13 and 98...weber is twice as good IMO..plus nash would match i think

Sean (Wheaton, IL) [via mobile]

Do you think the hawks will hire Pierre McGuire as there assistant coach if not who else is being considered?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:02 PM)

CAn I quit the beat if they do?

Peter (Ames)

Jesse, in your opinion do you ever see McNeil being a 2nd line center? Also, do you believe the Blackhawks are already lining up the cap for Toews next deal...I feel it will be big.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:03 PM)

No, on the latter question...not sure they're board goes 4 years out in terms of preparing for it...but I know what you mean..and sure, I could see it McNeil being that but still early in his career to know for sure...but they project him in that route

Jake (Libertyville)

You mentioned a couple deals where Staal could have come to Chicago... Can you shed some light on what the deals were and which side couldn't agree? Just interested in what/would it takes for a big time center.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:04 PM)

Well they died once he said no extension..but heard Bolland and Olsen and ??? was a starting point for Pitt....hawks said hammer...thats all I know...again, didnt go far

Jim (burbank,il)

Jess,How would you grade hawks top draft picks in minors?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:06 PM)

Amateur assesment...I like the forwards..if you include Saad...morin, smith, mcneil, etc. other than olsen not sure about the D...clendening looks like a hockey player but ways to go on D it seems...

Max (HP)

what do you think about bowman's inability to improve any position this offseason?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:07 PM)

He wont see it that way..he didnt HAVE to sign Oduya so he will say having him for a full year is an improvement...they re-signed carcillo, so again that was their choice...so they got some guys they wanted...just happened to be their own...if they were never in the Parise sweepstakes we would never be saying "why not". they have stars..they just need them to play like it and fill in around them the right way

Robert (San Antonio)

Jesse, you can't quit the beat! Besides-didn't you tell us all this year you weren't allowed to interview the assistants? Sounds like a dream scenario...not having to listen to him except for 30 seconds every 2nd game at the beginning of the 3rd period...

Jesse Rogers
  (2:08 PM)

HAha. good point. Then we can blame all on him anyway. But they are not hiring Pierre McGuire in any capacity..at least I hope not

Ilija (Phoenix)

Are the Hawks looking at any other goalies after Brodeur went back to NJ? Maybe a trade for Bernier? Or is it Crawford's job for sure next year?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:10 PM)

My opinion? CRawford...I have not heard anything about Bernier and think it would be a mistake...whats he proven..at least Schneider has played in some big games...I know its hard to swallow but barring a proven, better netminder I think they SHOULD give Craw one more chance...

Jim (burbank,il)

Hey Jess,Do you think Bowman is capable of making a good hockey trade? Seems hes more comfortable shedding salary or signing a so called safe FA

Jesse Rogers
  (2:11 PM)

Reamins to be seen but he acquired Leddy for Cam Barker so the answer is really yes, he capable of one..maybe not more than one!

jack (woodridge)

I hear Hossa is worse off than what is being reported. He may not come back next year? What are you hearing?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:12 PM)

Hilarious...so Q just yesterday says hes progressing and he'll be at the convention but you "hear" he might not be back next year...guess Q is lying and they will trot him out there on a stretcher...I have only heard what I have reported..thats why I reported it...lol

Patty (home)

I fear the Chicago Blackhawks organization is no longer perceived by star players as a desired "destination". In your opinion is this an accurate statement.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

Im not sure its that black and white...I know good things were being told to Brodeur but its possible the halo is off some , yes...for a vareity of reasons

Jesse Rogers
  (2:15 PM)

In other words not EVERYONE that has played here may be singing thier praises but not everyone is hammering them either

Scott (Canada)

Do you think if Parise was signed Kane would have been trade bait for a top end defense man?

Jesse Rogers
  (2:17 PM)

Not necessarily but I think more options would have been explored to max out on having all that firepower...was too early to tell and since it didnt happen we wont know..but I think the possibilities would have opened up

Paul (NJ)

Jesse, based on the conference call last week of Parise signed with the Wild I get the feeling Stan is saying 'we will be better because we think our kids - Saad, Shaw, Kruger, Leddy, etc will make us better'? Is that a fair read? For him to say we were a pretty good team last year and we don't need to make moves to win a Cup seems unrealistic to me.

Jesse Rogers
  (2:18 PM)

You just answered your question..they are HOPEFUL those guys will advance but a guy like Parise was a sure thing...so I guess this is Plan B...but Plan A was a grand slam so maybe Plan B is still a HR is their thinking

Jesse Rogers
  (2:21 PM)

Thats it for today...good stuff...dont believe everything thats out there...Hawks do stuff under the radar more than most...I think they are still trying to improve a few areas but think about the Wings or Preds..they have work to do too..I still think Nash is going to SJ and Doan to PHX or L.A...maybe some dominoes fall after that..Luongo to FLA...remains to be seen if Hawks can/want to do someting big...thanks all...follow me on twitter @espnchihawks and look for new blogs tomorrow from prospects camp..bowman will address media..talk soon
