Well I made it! I haven't seen one piece of the course yet, flight problems (wasn't planning on going to Amsterdam for 5 hours) but I'm here and now paranoid to eat a burger. But I got y'all and that is what makes this the fastest hour in golf!!! Let's go...
What weather conditions are in store for The Open this week? Will we see mother nature beat up the world's best?
With the weather a huge factor, what tee time would you prefer in Round 1 (early or later)? When is the weather most a factor?
The weather forecast looks bad for the whole week, but it seems like very late in the afternoon and evening there's a break so the guys with the REALLY late tee times may have the advantage.
How penalizing are the British Open bunkers for the average tour pro?
Well there are 205 verified bunkers on this course alone, and many of them are what we would consider "pot" bunkers which means not much more than a wedge out. I'd say a course like this the bunkers are much more penal than what the guys on the PGA Tour see. But that's what they originally were supposed to be... penalizing.
Hello Michael. Safe travels this week. A missed cut for DD this week, but a real good performance nonetheless. Tee to green was best all year. Putting did let him down, but he was right at the cut line. I have a good feeling that the clock is going to roll back this week and DD will be playing the weekend. Your thoughts? Have you caught up to him to chat with him and get the latest? Thanks.
Well he wasn't crazy about the Greenbrier and that's the last time we text back and forth, but he did show a bunch of improvement in his ball striking at John Deere. 30-31 putts though, he's gonna have to get a bit better on the greens but here he can be aggressive and that will help him.
What in the world was Johnson's rationale behind taking driver AGAIN on the 2nd playoff hole after going in the bunker on the 1st playoff hole? Was his 3-wood broken?!?! Would his usual caddie have told him to pull his head out? I was glad that he pulled it off but next time don't make it so hard.
Don't know that Zach was comfortable hitting a cut 3 wood and he might be too far back, still after the first driver...
That was a crazy finish yesterday. Do you think it was the weirdest end to a tournament so far this year?
I still think Kyle Stanley's finish at Torrey Pines was crazier.
Hey Michael. Which hole do you think will play the hardest at this open championship and what do you think tiger will finish by sunday afternoon
15 played the hardest in 2001 and I expect it to be up there again this year.
How do you think Sergio will react to being paired with Tiger? Will it help or hinder him this week?
I think it'll help him. He'll stay lose, if he plays like a guy that doesn't think he can win (and he's said that recently) he might just mess around and be in the top 30 come the weekend.
Mike I'll be at Copper Face Jack tonight I'll buy you pint- I'm putting money on Zach Johnson do you think his game on track to win here?
Coming off his win last week at the John Deere, that's a BAD omen... save your money, you can buy me another pint!
how much will tiger have to use his driver this week?
Maybe twice a round, but no more than 5 or 6 times. It will all depend on how hard the wind blows and even then he can hit that 3 wood stinger so low it may be a better choice.
I dont know what it is, but I want to think Ben Curtis will be a major threat at the British. He has played well this year and is currently 3rd in driving accuracy, 6th in GIR, 1st in scambling from 30+ yards, 3rd in total putting and 2nd in 3 putt avoidance..These are all stats that are important at the British Open, plus he has won before. What do you think?
I think you've done your homework! And being a guy who is a past champion of the event and a winner this year bodes well for him.
Michael do you think 1 number could be a pivotal hole on Saturday and Sunday?
BIG time! Gonna be key to get no worse then a par to start your round off on the weekend and if you can get a birdie and make guys here the roar... puts more pressure on them to try and get one too.
What are your expectations for Rory Mcilory. He really got lucky at congressional. That was not a us open course. It had no rough. I don't think he will ever win a British open. What do u think Michael. Rory is overrated
No way I'd say the guy is overrated. I'll just say that after the US Open win we may have put too high expectations on the guy. Everyone is looking for the next Tiger and for a blink the media thought he was it. He will win an Open Championship and definitely will contend for a Masters. But I just don't know where his game is this week, and that's a problem.
So what did u do for 5 hrs in amsterDAM
Had a starbucks, found out the Gold Starbucks card doesn't work internationally, stared out at airplanes, read, people watched, and got 30 free on the internet cause I was too cheap to pay for it!
lefty has a chance to the open?
Yeah, after the comeback he made last week in Scotland, his game seems to have turned a corner in a good way.
What does Tiger have to do to win the Open this weekend? Like the keys to victory. Will you pick him to win?
He has to make the big 7-10 par saving putts. He has a great chance to win but... I have a feeling about Lee Westwood.
In one of your columns you mentioned that you were nervous about the UK food. If you had to take one with you to the UK would it be Micky Don Dons, Chipotle, or Scrubway?
Chipotle, by far!
What are the temps suppose to be for the Open?
Mid 50's and rainy. Beach weather if you're from here! haha
How much heavier is the golf bag to carry this week with extra towels, clothes, etc...due to unpreditable weather?
It's when it stops raining and you put the wet rain suit and wet umbrella back in the bag that it gets HEAVY. Puts an extra 5-7 lbs on it but feels like 20!
The UK food is underrated. Pub Grub is very good, it's just not gourmet. Have some Fish and Chips, Shepard's Pie and wash down with a pint. And enjoy
I'm a big fan of fish and chips and here up north it's supposed to be "spot on".
Better chance of an American or International player winning this week?
International. That's because they play in these conditions with slower greens more often.
What about BUBBAS chances!!!! BUBBA!! BUBBA!!
It's hard to say with Bubba. He can run hot and cold and when he gets down on himself it can go bad fast. I still think though if he gets off to a good start and is in the top 20 on day one he'll make a run at it.
What do you think will be the winning score?
If you were going to point to key for the week (other than putting well) what would it be?
definitely iron play, a bunch of bunker have been added around the greens so GIR's will be a big factor for the guy who wins
Not sure I agree with the international reasoning. Who's a better links player than Tom Watson? Tiger, Jack all have done well. Rory has stated he doesn't like links golf. I think that is the general perception that internationals should be favorites since they play in it more often, not sure the facts bear that out. Even last year, Darren Clarke won it, Phil and DJ come in 2nd - majority of Top 10 I believe were Americans.
we talking about winners or guys who finish second."If you ain't first, you're last" - Rickie Bobby's daddy.I should have never gone to that NASCAR race. ;)
What are Nick Watney's chances for this week? He's not a big links lover but he's been playing good golf lately...
I don't see him lighting it up this week. Making the cut would be a good thing for him.
Segio will fare better than top 30. Check his results for the OPen. he has a better than average throughout his career.
MC for Luke Donald? Short n crooked + foul weather = quick trip back to Chicago?
Nah, I see him making the cut and finishing inside the top 50.
What do you think of Jim Fuyrk's chances?
He's a guy that might be a force to reckon with if he can putt.
Better chance to win this week Phil or Luke Donald?
Do you think Daly will make the cut this weekend?
I gotta think so cause of how he's been going the past few weeks even though he missed the cut last week, he's been hitting it pretty solid
Better chance of getting their first major this week: Luke, Westwood, or Adam Scott?
Michael, dont be afraid of the English cuisine. That's the wonder of visiting a new country to experience the full gambit. seriously the food is good as long as you stay away from the kidney pie; as in USA you would stay away from chitlins unless you are from the South
Hey Michael, Good to meet you this weekend at the tournament in Gainesville. Why does Lee Westwood continue to get so much love from the media when he continues to fall short in all of the majors?
Because he is so brutally honest about his performances and how he feels about where he will stand in the game if he never wins one. Makes people want him to win even more.
have u got phil on twitter yet?
haha, not yet!
you gonna get to touch the claret jug before they pass it out again on Sunday? Clarke tweeted a pic of him returning it today...just saying you may want to grab that puppy and head to the nearest Pub quick.
If I grab it, it's going on Ebay for a short sale!
What kind of burger are you going for? Chances of Rickie Fowler this week?
No burgers this week. Sticking with seafood. Fowler will have a good week but I don't see a win here.
young guy who deserves more attention going into the tournament = Rickie Fowler. Good ball flight for the conditions; has all the shots; recent/brief track record of success in The Open (especially in bad conditions last year). Wouldn't be bad to see bright orange bring it home on a cool, dreary day in England.
Would be cool, but I just don't see him winning here. I think a course like St. Andrews fits him a bit better.
higher finish rory or phil?
Have u had a chance to talk to tiger yet. Do you think you can get an autograph of him?
Haven't talked to him and never asked him for an autograph, never would.
Tried to send this one earlier on the mobile (sorry if you already got it)...you think JMSingh has an Open chance? bogey free -5 in heavy winds yesterday up north looked awfully good. and he can flat putt.
He did, but that swing... and the Open... there's a reason he's never won a major, that swing breaks down too easy during the BIG ones.
how about this question...higer finish...Potter Jr. or Matteson? (how happy are those guys?)
Both of them MC
Do you like the new qualifying prcoess for the pga tour
Best chance to win out of Phil, Tiger, Furyk, Donald, Westwood, Stricker?
Westwood, Tiger, Phil, Donald, Furyk, Stricker... in that order
Come one Mike...Lee Westwood to win? He has game but he doesnt have the "it"...it would be great to see him win a Major but I just dont see it happening...I believe he will be close in "many" majors but will never win...always the bridesmaid but never the bride...that sounded weird!
C'Mon Steve... if I told you Ben Curtis had "it" the year he won you would have called me... well I can't even say it here.
do you think paddy will win another major
Nope. He's doing too much fiddling with his swing.
You really like phil huh. But why, he has never played well in links and last week's 64 was a fluke. What do you think?
64-68 weekend, that's no fluke. 64-74... then I'd say you have a point.
hello :) do you think tiger has enough gas in the tank to win 4 more majors to pass or beat jacks record ?
Oh yeah. He's gotta stay healthy though.
6 people in the media center it's WAY too quiet creeping me out
Will David Duval make the cut?
When it's all said and done for Mcilroy how many majors will he have?
How about a Big Easy win this year?! Gotta be pullin for Ernie!
would love to see Els make a run, but like most of the over 40 crew... putting is a big factor
Best chance - Phil, McDowell, McIlroy, Fuyrk, Dufner, Fowler
Phil, Fowler, McDowell, Dufner, Furyk, McIlroy
Does Martin Kaymer have a realistic shot at winning the Open?
He might be one of those, "oh yeah I forgot about him", but if he's within 5 of the lead on Saturday, watch out. He reminds me a bit of Goosen back in the day.
wats ur twitter
How strange would it be for Phil to win an Open with all of his close calls in the US Open?
That would be crazy
With the crazy weather, does it lend to a greater/lesser chance of someone running away from the field for victory?
no, I think it makes it almost impossible for someone to go out and lap the field.
