Appreciate you all for stopping by. Let's get this started.
Who do you think will be the best Longhorn in College Football in 2012?
Jackson Jeffcoat, Carrington Byndom, Alex Okafor, Kenny Vaccaro in that order.
William:What are the chances Texas get's into the Torri Hunter Jr. sweepstakes or are we still waiting to get a better read on RSJ? Also, over the years Texas has been very flexible in the Secondary in Nickle and Dime backages and always had a solid 3rd corner (Cedric Griffin, Ross, Tarell Brown) (Aaron Williams and the Brown Brothers). Who is going to man the position when the Horns go Nickel? Thanks for the feedback and keep up the good work.
There is always a chance that someone like Hunter could get looked at by Texas. But one of the main things that our scouts over at ESPN tell us is to believe the film and not the hype. Obviously, Hunter had a fantastic showing at The Opening. He was lethal in 7on7. But there is a reason that Texas didn't go after him in the first place. Not sure what that reason is at the moment, but will dig into that. As for your second question, I think Duke Thomas could be a guy to keep an eye on. Reportedly had a very impressive spring. You've got to remember that Duke was primarily a QB in HS so for him to make that type of impression at DB so soon after high school speaks to his capabilities. Also, Josh Turner is a name to remember.
How are things looking with Cole Luke? Any plans for a visit, or do we know when he plans to commit? Also, could you realistically see us landing Harris, Luke, Bencoch, Billings, and the Juco DE to wrap things up with this class?
Luke has kept his recruitment pretty quiet but we are working to get more info from him and his camp. I know that Texas sits pretty high on his list and, mistake me if I am wrong, but I believe USC just got another DB commitment yesterday. So that leaves one less spot available for him. Realistically, yeah it is a possibility. But a bit of a stretch. Harris likes Texas a lot and will likely take an official visit this season. He's already familiarized himself with the campus on two other occasions. But Texas really needs to pull out all the stops for him whenever he arrives.
Since caleb is waiting till HC night to commit do you see anyone committing before then? Also, with the commitments of 2014 prospects do you seed this as a time to give in to the monster of sophomore scholarships?
For those that don't know, Caleb Benenoch announced yesterday that he would like to make his decision on homecoming night on 9/28. There's no promise that will happen, that's just when he would like to. I think there could be a commitment before then, definitely. Billings has said that he could make a decision before summers end. As for sophomore schollies, I think it is something that Texas should continue to monitor but I don't think they should give in just yet. If the Alabama's, LSU's, etc. start stealing their targets with more of a bargaining chip because of Texas A&M, then maybe. But not right now.
What's up William!! Just got out of swim practice so I'm insanely energetic. Anyway, Marcell Harris is a must get with the way this disappointing recruiting year has been. If Harris doesn't come to Austin, I'm going to explode.
Eddie, go wash that chlorine off brotha. Harris is a "must get" for several programs. He favors Florida and UT, so Texas has a chance. Will know more about him once he take his official visit during the season.
So is this a fantasy awards watch I'm reading and hearing? B/c I saw that Mike Davis is an award watcher for Biletnikoff? Just curious to know what he's done in his entirety to warrant even making the list for this? Unless it's another guy with the same name and I watch every game I haven't seen anything that leads me to believe that this is even fathomable. Jax Shipley will get it before he does. With that out of the way where is the headway on the next closest commitments?
Josh, you aren't the first one to ask me this question today. Many are surprised that he made the cut. I can't speak for those that make the watch list. Some could argue that Jaxon or even Marquise deserve this recognition over Mike Deezy.
What's Goodwin bringing home?
A few suitcases full of memorabilia and a medal.
has there been any talk about Jalen Overstreet. how will he be used? I mean he was recruited by Harsin so he has to have a plan for him right? Could he be the dark horse in the QB race?
We will know more about the team's plan for JO once fall camp rolls around August 2. He has always been forthcoming about his desire to succeed as a QB. He understands how people view him and carries a bit of a chip on his shoulder that people automatically talk about Connor Brewer before him. I say he will get his chance to impress as a QB in practice but won't see the field unless he is worked into some Wildhorn formation or other special package. But you are right. Harsin went after him for a reason. Only time will tell in this one.
Do you see the Horns pursuing any other defensive backs other than the 3 currently with offers?
Harris, Bell, Collins and Luke are the ones Texas is eying right now. I think Collins favors Texas but he would prefer to play on offense, which I don't think UT will let him do. There is always the chance of someone emerging during the season. But for now I'd say there are the ones that Texas is going with.
With Berg, Williams, and Grey all in the same backfield, who emerges as the best of the bunch?
Tough question. But I'll go with Malcolm Brown if he can stay healthy. Something tells me he will get the most carries, even though Burgeron could steal some of his TDs in short yardage situations. But I think all three of their numbers will be pretty similar. Gray should lead all of them in receiving yards by a wide margin.
Where does Texas appear to be heading with the remainder of the 2013 class, specifically OL, DL, WR, and secondary? Same old names or have some new targets risen?
For now, same ol, same ol. It's been pretty quiet over the last few weeks since the surprise commitment of Geoff Swaim. But that shouldn't remain the case over the next few months. Tori Hunter Jr. could be a name to keep an eye on. We will find out more about his interest in UT. There doesn't seem to be a DT or DE in the state that Texas is clamoring over (aside from Prevot, whose interest in Texas is wishy washy. So it looks like UT will go the JUCO route for DE/DT... at this point anyway.
William, David Ubben keeps on predicting these ridiculous outcomes on the Big 12 next year.... He has TCU and WVU atop and undefeated 6 games in to the year topping even UT!!! who is your early Top 3 of the conference?
Early top three are OU, UT and WVU with TCU, KSU and OSU nipping on their heels. This is going to be one of the more intriguing conferences races in the country. A lot of parity right now. The schedule for Texas is tough but sets up pretty nicely I think. They'll have a taste of a road environment heading into OSU with the Ole Miss game coming on the road the week before. They get WVU at home a week before OU. Baylor and TCU are home, and that thorn-in-their-side KSU won't be seen until the last game of the regular season. So they should have most of their kinks worked out by then.
Should UT fans fear a relapse of the poor talent evaluating by Mack Brown and his staff that has caused the Horns to take a step back nationally after seeing Tyrone Swoopes drop down in the rankings?
I don't believe so. You've got to remember that what Swoopes does best isn't necessarily going to be showcased in camps like these. His dual-threat capabilities are best shown under the lights on Friday nights. So I wouldn't read too much into his drop in ranking. I know he's hungry to prove doubters wrong at the Elite 11 finals, which he left for today. I also think there are some undervalued guys in this class that will make a difference in years to come. Namely, Naashon Hughes, Erik Huhn and Geoff Swaim. They aren't the sexy names at the top of the rankings lists, but there are all quality players that do certain things very, very well.
How will the Longhorns do against Ole Miss and West Virginia?
I've got them winning both of those games. FYI: It was announced yesterday that the Ole Miss game would be an 8:15 p.m. tip.
Come Red River weekend, what will the starting O-line be?
The same as it is for the season opener. From L to R: Hawkins, Hopkins, Espinosa, Walters and Cochran.
If the Horns could have only have one, which defensive lineman would they take? Justin Manning or Torredney Prevot?
Whew, I'll go with Prevot just because I think his upside is bigger than Mannings. Doesn't look like they'll get either of them though.
How close does Wyoming keep it on September 1st?
I think the score will be similar to what it was two years ago when Texas won 34-7.
Which uncommitted recruit would you leastl like to see wearing Crimson and Cream next season?
Well it doesn't matter to me but, for Texas fans, I guess I'd go with Manning. Really good talent.
Am I see the second best athlete in my household if my wife brings home an individual gold medal from London?
Even if she doesn't bring home a gold you are still the second best athlete. Come on man, you know better than to ask silly questions.
When do you expect Mack to name a starting QB?
Fairly early into fall camp just so everyone understands their rolls.
Jalen Overstreet? Hearing anything? Will he see the field next season?
Hey Stephen, answered this question earlier in the chat.
With Jones, Randle, and the Harrison Twins most likely all attending college elswhere. Does Rick Barnes need to land Keith Frazier and Karviar Shepherd to re-establish UT as the dominant program within the state? And put a halt to Baylor's ascension up the totem pole.
No question. Can't remember a year when the in-state talent was as rich with no-brainers as it is in the upcoming class. I wouldn't count out Randle just yet but I do think Frazier and/or Shepherd are high priorities.
How did all these talks about swoopes start, I dont understand? We have commited the best running backs two years in a row to play shouldn't we be focused on running the ball. I already have two quarterbacks on the team who are mobile?
Right but just imagine what this offense could look like with a dual-threat QB. You've got to keep that cupboard stocked at all times. Depth at any position, especially QB is never a bad thing.
how many games do u think msu wins this fall?
I see 9 to 10. Fantastic defense.
What position does Swoopes play -- if after a couple of seasons on campus he is not the QB we had originally thought? WR? LB?
WR but I promise you he stays at QB.
You really think Espinosa will be in the starting O-line come Red River weekend? He has not shown the ability to hold up against a team with a solid defense (see OU and K-State last season). Why isn't the team looking more towards shifting Walters to C?
I do. Don't forget he was just a freshman last season. Cohesiveness across the line has grown this offseason, considerably.
Longhorn more likely to bring home a gold medal, Richards-Ross or Kevin Durant?
KD but I think both will.
Which Texas NBA Team will has the most upside, Rockets or Mavericks?
What, no love for the Spurs!? Come on man. As bleak as the beginning of the offseason looked for the Mavs, they have done a great job of recovering with the addition of Mayo, Brand, Kaman. So I'll go with the Mavs even though we all know the best team in Texas still resides in SA.
I would still Say SA but rockets could get Dwight
Can you let me know if you think Texas or TCU will replace TAMU in the Southwest Classic? Or perhaps even the alma mater of JJ's oil buddy? BYU is not keeping up with tradition.
I can't at this time. But Texas or TCU would obviously draw huge numbers.
I saw the SMU-Texas game on LHN the other day. SMU was the best team money could buy, but man was Eric Dickerson impressive?
That whole team was money, no pun intended, but Dickerson especially. Boy, did he hate Texas though.
How do you see Garrett Gilbert panning out at SMU?
I think he's in line to do very well with the type of offense he'll be orchestrating. And not being in the limelight for the first time in his career could do him some good too. Nice guy, I'm rooting for him to do well.
Will the Texas Showdown still happen every year even though they are in a differant conferance now?
The Lonestar Showdown? No. It'll be a while before that happens again if, dare I say, it ever does.
When will ESPN & UT get the Longhorn Network on major carriers like Direct TV.
No timetable is set but I know all parties involved are working hard to make that happen.
Will Shipley still be returning punts? And who else on kick off returns?
Probably so. DJ Monroe, Daje johnson, Quandre Diggs, M. Thompson are also options.
Which will the Horns have first, another Heisman Trophy, or Nagurski award winner?
Play OU and WVU at home in backk-to-back weeks. One of those teams?
Who does Texas Tech upset in 2012?
Alright folks, that's the end of this weeks chat. We appreciate you all for stopping by and joining in. We'll have plenty of coverage on the Elite 11 later this week on HornsNation.com so be sure to stop by to see how Swoopes does against the best of the best.
