Hey everyone! Just finished the podcast-good one! Download it. I am up in Bristol today doing this chat from one of Jay's computers...a little out of my element!
Your thoughts on Trent Richardson's potential?
Love the guy. Total package. True Bell Cow RB. Stud. Can be the best RB in football very soon.
I have Greg Little and Randall Cobb on my Dynasty fantasy team. Who will be more valuable to me come 2014, assuming I retian both until then?
Tough one. Very high on both guys for Dynasty. Cobb could be in a fantastic situation and I expect him to emerge very soon. I just traded for Little actually-I think it is unfair to judge him just on his rookie season-the guy came to UNC as a RB, didn't play his senior season and didn't have mini camps!
If you had to choose one for a team, who would you take Revis or Polumalu in their primes?
Revis. Both are Hall of Famers and huge difference makers, but Revis eliminates the O's best WR. Gotta love that.
Better year, Peyton or Rivers?
Rivers. Safer. And contrary to popular thought, he didn't have such a terrible season last year-esp late. And if Gates is actually healthy....
There has been a lot of talk about Reiff in Detroit and if/when he will start. How do you see that playing out? Does he take the LT position and push Backus inside or to RT or does he ride the bench or some other scenario?
Good question. I tend to think DET will find a starting spot for him ASAP. Either Tackle spots would work. Maybe Backus moves to OG. Should be Backus' heir apparent either way. Interesting where they all line up, but I bet he starts.
Hey Matt! Love your stuff and huge Football today fan! My question is: Do you think Seattle will now look at signing a free agent like Cedric benson or Ryan Grant? Thanks
Benson makes sense I suppose-grinder type RB semi in the Lynch mold. I think SEA wants to give a big RB a ton of carries and control the tempo of the game. Benson could be an option in that regard as a fall back plan.
Hey Matt...As a Pats fan is there any reason I shouldn't think Wes Welker is as good as gone after this season?
We just discussed that heavily on podcast-check it out. But I tend to think he stays-best for both parties. Could also Franchise him for 11 million or so after this year-and why not assuming they are still a huge contender
Does it make me a homer to think Jared Gaither may be an upgrade over McNeill. Big Mac was excellent his first couple of years, but wasn't the same player the latter years here in SD.
Gaither at his best is a def upgrade over McNeal...he can be great...but WILDLY inconsistent
Do the Forte and Rice deals make it more likely MJD holds out into the season? When does this end?
MJD has a contract though-those two didn't. I wouldn't give MJD a deal if I were JAX right now.
Do the bills make the playoffs with the new and improved defense?
I like NE to win the division and will pick the Bills 2nd. Not sure who I will pick yet for Wild Cards, but will certainly strongly consider BUFF for one of those spots.
Will they be featuring Tannehill's wife on Hard Knocks?
Ryan Tannehill's first start is ?????
Week 12 or so. Let him sit a bit. Eventually when it is obvious that MIA isn't going to the postseason, get his feet wet. Much like Locker last year.
Who do you like better this year for fantasy: a disgruntled Mike Wallace or Antonio Brown?
That is a coin flip. I bet Brown has more catches. But Wallace's catches are for big yards and TDs.
I'm thinking that cam will regress, what say you?
Sorta. If you are talking Fantasy, yes, because he won't have that crazy number of rushing TDs. But I think he will improve as a QB and as a passer.
Higher ceiling Locker or Tannehill?
Good question, but Locker. Dude is just dripping with ability. But Locker's erratic accuracy is an issue for me. Will that ever be corrected? I have some doubts
Who do you think will emerge as the Raiders No. 1 receiver this year?
Moore, but DHB has improved and is a legit starting WR. Just think Moore can be great.
do you think ed reed will realize that he and his family will be able to scrape by on his $7.2mm salary and report to the ravens camp?
That seems very odd to me. Still a great player, but obviously declining. His body is really beat up. Just play for 7.2!
Is this the best Bears offense (paper) that we've seen in almost 20 years?
Perhaps and the scheme change will help a ton, but they still don't have good players on the OL.
Who has more left in the tank: Ray Lewis or Ed Reed?
Reed, because he plays a less physical position further away from the LOS...would doubt that 2012 is both players' final season though
Biggest rookie WR impact in 2012?
Really don't like this Rook WR class...no one really coming to mind as a big impact guy. I guess I would pick Blackmon (boring), but really excited about it.
Is Brandon Lloyd primed for a 1000 yd season this year?
Oh yeah...big year coming for Lloyd
Brandon Marshall stats this yr?
90ish for 1250 and 8 TDs
Feelings on Josh Freeman this year? He has some new toys, I just hope he can take that step forward.
I felt like Freeman really tried to do too much last year and his mechanics were also a problem. He needs to really get back to basics and I think Schiano recognizes that. Freeman's stats might not be huge ni 2012, but I think it will be a very good and instrumental season in his career.
Lions make the playoffs this year?
Leaning towards predicting the NFC North as: 1. GBAY 2. CHI 3. DET 4. MINN...in which case, I tend to think they don't.
Give me a sleeper fantasy tight end. I'm thinking Coby Fleener.
Jared Cook, esp with Britt's latest injury situation
What does Carolina do with the Linebackers? Does Beason move to the outside and Luke take inside or vice versa?
I wrote an article on the NFC South blog about this last week. I bet Luke is the MLB with Beason on the outside. Anderson/Davis as SLB
Locking up Tyvon Branch long-term seems like a good move by the Raiders. While he really improved in 2011 (especially in coverage) do you expect an even bigger leap in Dennis Allen's revamped defense?
Yes, real good move. Much better coverage player than most big SS types and did well vs. the top TEs. Really good player.
Will Santonio Holmes produce like he's capable this year?
Not sold that the Jets have enough weapons to deflect a ton of attention away from Holmes and I hate their QB situation. Would LOVE to see Holmes in a better situation.
Looking forward to Ponder having a good year (full offseason, improved offensive line). Will he be even more effective in the red zone with Rudolph, Carlson and now Rhett Ellison who all have terrific hands?
Very much agree. I am a Ponder believer here. Simpson also was a real nice addition.
Do you see RG3 targeting Fred Davis a lot as he gets acclimated to the NFL? And does that result in a big Fanatsy year for Davis?
Huge F Davis guy here for FF...Shanny knows how to use athletic TEs and Davis is WASH's best weapon overall.
Who is the starting running back for the Patriots this year? (not that it matters)
It doesn't matter, but I think Ridley ends up as the BJGE, but with much more ability. I also like Vereeen though and I bet he does some really impressive things in 2012
Most football folks seem to think one of the QBs will take it, but isn't it more likely someone like Richardson or Blackmon gets OROY?
The obvious choices for me for OROY are Richardson, RG3 & Luck. Martin would be 4th on that list. Torn between those top three, as all should see a ton of snaps.
You going to do a top DBs in 2015 article? If not who you got off the top of your head?
No, those are done. Eric Berry and Earl Thomas come to mind for sure at Safety. Patrick Peterson would most likely be my top CB....gonna be a stud.
You think Jerry Reese extends K. Phillips during the season? NYG can NOT afford to lose him.
I just wonder what the team docs have to say about that
Matt, Who has a better FF year Stafford or Rodgers..? I say Stafford, with 5060 Yards and 45 TDs and Rodgers 4850 and 42 TDs.. you agree or what...
Wouldn't pick anyone over Rodgers-and I love Stafford. Plus, Rodgers gets a lot of rushing yards. He is a machine
Matt, everytime I hear anyone talk about Even Royster, he is labeled as "just a guy", lacking the skill set to be a starter. However, in the final 2 games of last yr he had 245 yds rushing with a 6.3 avg, along with 7 catches for 67 yards. He has ideal size, and oh by the way is Penn State's all time leading rusher. Lastly, his size and combine results mirror Mark Ingram almost identically. What is your take on him?
He is growing on me for sure and I do think he fits Shanny's system quite well. No nonsense runner who lacks special skills.
How do you think the Steelers' RB situation will play out this year? Is Redman the man all season long, or will Mendy make a triumpant return and Dwyer make a push?
Hearing REALLY good things about Dwyer...Rainey will be a factor here and there too
Is the linebacker posiiton becoming overrated (4-3 defense)?? Alot of these guys get subbed for on passing downs and the are not playmaker types (ints sacks)
Sorta. If you notice in this past draft, a lot of athletic lighter 4-3 OLB types went higher in the draft that usual. Nickel LB is now almost on par with Nickel CB. Specialty players. I think the big heavy MLB types of the past are the ones becoming dinosaurs, but the athletic fast-flowing LBs are becoming more in demand, as they might be a semi-answer for the Graham/Gronks of the NFL
More likely to be starting at the end of the year: Ryan Williams in Zona or Ronnie Hillman in Denver?
I bet both are starting by end of the year. I trust Williams more in protection, which is obviously crucial-esp in Denver with the protection of Manning.
Is the Pats offensive line a potential weakness? I love Solder, but is he ready to handle the blind side full time?
Maybe. Rarely do rookie OTs shine, so Solder's rookie season was good enough in my book. The guy I really like for that group is Cannon at OG.
Hi Matt, I'm a little concerned about the Giants OL. Do you think Dave Diehl can be effective at guard or RT? Are his best years behing him? I kinda want to see Mitch Petrus get the not at OG.
You should be REALLY concerned with the Giants' OL! ...and it was bad last year as well. I think Snee rebounds. I prefer Diehl at OG. One guy-like my Cannon comment-who I like a lot as a starting OT is Brewer.
how good can Bryan Bulaga be?
OL Talk! Was MUCH better in year 2 than year 1. Can be one of the best RTs in football-but the RT position is very weak around the NFL right now.
Who will help the Packers defense more, Nick Perry or Jerel Worthy?
Betting that both players more or less are just 3rd down defenders as rookies and I will go with Perry to make more of an impact in that capacity right away.
Matty..... great insurance policy in signing big Max. Now when does the Wallace got his $$$ so we can focus on Stairway to Seven?
Yeah, can't argue with bringing back Starks-must be healthy. That OL should be very good. As for Wallace, he will be in. Not going to leave 4 million on the table.
Is Perry miscast as a 3-4 OLB?
I worry about him playing in reverse, but I bet they more or less just rush him off the edge as specialty player.
Stairway to Seven! Ed should copyright that!!!
That has been out there a while! ...but it is great stuff
Does R. Bush keep up the hot hand or do they make it more of a committee in MIA?
Betting this staff would prefer a bigger RB (like R Grant type), but I bet Bush's reception numbers improve...someone has to catch the ball for the Phins!
The franchise tag was invented for players like Kenny Phillips, the Giants will franchise him until his knee goes
Could be an option. There is a Safety shortage around the NFL right now and they are very much in demand. But the Franchise Tag was actually developed for guys like Drew Brees!
End of the season, who is Seattle's starting QB? Flynn or Wilson?
Wilson will be their QB of the future-and maybe a very good one. But when does he take over? Tough call obviously, as I think SEA will have an Elite D, so their season should be competitive until the end.
(12), Over/under sacks for Von Miller?
Miller is my DMVP pick this year for his overall game, but I will still take the OVER
Who loses their spot as last year's starter first: Blount, Wells, or McGahee?
Blount...Martin should be opening day starter
Continuing the OL talk, I love the Seahawks OL on paper, only problem is they always have multiple guys hurt. How good can their line be if healthy? Good enough to let Zach Miller...oh I dont know....actually go catch the ball?
I love Okung, but he MUST stay healthy. The rest of the OL outside of center gives me a little pause, esp w Carpenter's injury situation. Betting the TEs are bloacking more than you would like Corey
Since you know more about Joe Philbin, the Green Bay WCO, and the Dolphins' personnel than I do--what do you expect from Miami's offense this year?
Major work in progress. I like the OL quite a bit now though if Long is healthy. Bring Tannehill along slowly. But they just don't have the WRs to really run this scheme yet.
Better future... Julio Jones or AJ Green?
Green. Green has a better future than any NFL WR besides Calvin J
Who do you think will lead the AFC East in sacks? Wake? Mario? Someone else?
Hmmm...picking Miller as DMVP, but Wake isn't a bad call. Maybe Hali. Give me Hali.
I have no idea what to make of the SF offense. They brought in a lot of speed, but ran a slow power game last year. Where do you see this O going?
I think they realize that it is very tough ton win the NFL with such a running/heavy personnel O. Harbaugh's roots are a power running game, but I bet we see more spread and a lot of rotation amongst the O skill players. Need to create explosive playes...so they added explosive players. Smart.
Conspiracey alert TE becoming focus of offense is only because they are cheaper than WR
Not for long. TEs being featured because some are uncoverable.
Best defense in the AFC West?
Who is going to be the Bengals #2 WR, with no #2 can't the teams just duble or even triple team AJ Green?
That is a worry for sure. Hearing good things about Tate though. But I bet Gresham steps up big this year.
Is James Harrison still an effective enough player to justify his idiocy and price tag?
I certainly believe so...no one is excited about playing against that guy
Matt, do you think the Vikings' opening day starting WR's are Harvin and Simpson?
Eventually-when Simpson returns from his suspension. In the meantime, prob Jenkins-blah. But I like some of their younger guys for down the road.
Don't forget Shipley!
No doubt. He will be very Dalton-friendly
Since you're at the ESPN offices today--no tunes for you?
No tunes. Not on my laptop/keyboard. Actually dressed kinda nice. WAY out of my element!
More rushing yards Forte or A.D. and More Total yards Forte or A.D.
Peterson? I doubt he plays at the beginning of the season. Actually, I really hope Minny doesn't rush him back too soon since they are not yet a contender. Forte.
how many catches for Welker? 110+??
Guess I would take the UNDER on 110, just since there is another mouth to feed. But I am guessing that it is Hernandez's target numbers that suffer most with Lloyd on board.
Do you think Urlacher plays above average for another 2-3 years? He doesn't seem to be slowing down much.
Just talked about that on ESPN Chicago two nights ago. He is playing well. Remember-amazingly-he was a Safety in college and returned kickoffs! Anyways, I think 2 or 3 years is fair to expect from Urlacher.
Are we forgetting Sanu?
Good pick, but tough to put a lot of eggs in that basket right now for me in Year 1
Matt, what should we expect from J Charles after his injury? 1400 total yards and 8 tds too much?
That seems right if he is the same player as before the injury, but I want to see him first in the preseason before signing off on that one.
What are you doing up in Bristol?
Chatting with you
Folks, I need to run. Have a packed schedule of meetings up here today. Should be fun. But for now, I need to hit that caf! See ya next week and drop me a line on Twitter @WilliamsonNFL
