Chat with Jean-Jacques Taylor

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (12:59 PM)

What's up? After a month of vacation I'm back one day and all Hell breaks loose regarding Dez Bryant. Let's talk about it, and those moves the Mavs made. They're a better team, but fans were promised a Porsche and given an Accord. Nothing wrong with an Accord cause I've had one for 11 years, but it ain't porsche

Steven (DFW)

Why are you such a horrible journalist?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:01 PM)

My dad thinks I'm great and ESPN likes me. So, maybe, it's only your opinion, in which case I wouldn't care all that much. Got it? Be blessed

Bmal DallasNative (Overrated !!)

Do you consider yourself overrated ??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:02 PM)

Nope. Are you overrated?

Deven (New York)

How would you now grade the Mavericks offseason after missing out on their targets?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:05 PM)

I don't grade it based on missing out on their target. the ENTIRE OFFSEASON plan was to get one guy. They failed. They've made a nice recovery but this is a team assembled with parts others teams didn't. That has to make you apprehensive. You just can't assume a bunch of pieces other teams didn't want will fit together and thrive. OKC is better. Lakers are better. Spurs are better. Memphis is better. Clippers are better. Denver is better. Portland and Minnesota will be better. Mavs battling for one of bottom 2 seeds with zero guarantee they will get one. They MAvs haven't had a question about making the playoffs since 1999. If that makes you think this was a good off-season, then so be it

Mark (Tampa)

Would you suggest the Boyz begin a back-up plan for not having Dez on the roster at some point?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:06 PM)

I'm sure they have a backup plan, but he has talent that's difficult to replace. The Cowboys have a backup plant at QB, but it's not nearly as desirable as the top option. That's all I mean

Mark (Tampa)

If none of the young WRs pan out in camp, why not take a flyer on TO w/ a 1yr bare bones deal back loaded w/ behavior incentives...

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:08 PM)

He CAN'T play anymore. He's 37 years old coming off ACL surgery. Besides, there's no way in the world Jason Garrett wants a selfish dude like that in his locker room. TO is done. He's a HOF player in my opinion because for a decade he was among the best in the game. But his time has passed

MFFL KB (AAC)

Dez may be likely out for a few games lets say 4 who do you think will stepp up and be that #2 WR kev o. holmes or what about bringing in someone like braylon edwards get him on the phone now...

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:09 PM)

The Cowboys don't even have a proven No.3 on the roster. No way they have someone capable of replacing Dez and having his impact on the roster. They might have to acquire someone, but let's see how it plays out first.

MFFL KB (AAC)

JJT say we do get cole hammels who would you take in the playoffs as far as the 4 man rotation yu hammels and lewis are gimmies right?? who gets in and whos left out harrison or holland or do you take out lewis???

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:13 PM)

great question. It's too early to say because the staff has been so streaky. Right now, though, Holland would head to the BP because he's done it before and he hasn't been as consistently good as Lewis and Harrison

MFFL KB (AAC)

JJT I know you arent excited about OJ but i do think hes a good addition to a mavs team who doesnt really have alot of playmakers other thans a 7 foot german. Do you think he will come off the bench or start and what you think is his best fit here??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:15 PM)

He's supposed to be the starting two guard. All I'm saying is ask yourself why Memphis didn't offer the third player taken in the 2008 draft a contract, though he averaged 15.2 points in his 4-years there.

jason (new london tx)

well i think getting elton brand and oj mayo were smart moves after the jasons jumped ship, but is chris kaman that much of an upgrade over haywood? will dallas still be able to sign a big name next summer?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:16 PM)

Kaman. Brand. Mayo. They're all solid NBA players. No more, no less. The standard around here is to be among the NBA's elite. This group doesn't do that

Randall (Shreveport)

How many Cowboys will be missing the start of training camp due to injury? How much will this effect the team at the start of the season?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:18 PM)

Jenkins and Sensabaugh among starters and Bernadeau on offense off the top of my head. It's too early to say. We'll know more win camp starts and we can get updated reports

MFFL KB (AAC)

Take out the whole Dez situation right now whos our 3rd WR in your opinion??

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:21 PM)

He ain't on the roster yet. I don't trust any of those guys based on what we know. you shouldn't either. That said, I'm anxious to see Danny Coale and Cole Beasley

MFFL KB (AAC)

Chances of getting Justin Upton on the rangers squad.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:22 PM)

good question. You have to figure out why he lost his power and why he doesn't yank the ball anymore. Is he better than Murphy and the current OF configuration. I'd say 34.6 percent because I'm not sure he's a difference-maker this season

Mike (Dallas)

I just read your article i dont understand your position. were you really predicting title contention in 2010 and 2011? because nobody else was, most ridiculed using the damp trade chip to bring in tyson chandler and looking at that roster person by person on paper its not a whole lot to get excited about. unless you overrate jason kidd and jason terry as most mavs writers/fans do, so again explain why we are so terrible this year when they are probably better than last year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:26 PM)

Let's not be obtuse. Being a contender means when the season begins you're one of the teams in the conversation about whether you could win a title if everything went right. The Mavs, by virtue of winning 50+ games 13 consecutive times, have been contenders every year.

Jason (Dallas)

Once a hater, always a hater. I agree with you this team is going nowhere but you were saying the same thing the year The Mavs won the championship. Stick to playing Madden.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:27 PM)

When you're hating on something, it means you're criticizing something when none is warranted or deserved. You can certainly criticize the Mavs' acquisitions - it's not even that hard considering every piece they've acquired was cast off by its former team. They haven't signed a single player coveted by the masses. And that's OK, but let's call it what it is

Shawn (Uptown)

I know the recent Mavs moves don't excite you but the new youth on the squad gives them a better shot at landing a big fish.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:29 PM)

says who? Youth only matters, if it can play at a high level., Roddy B is young and he doesn't get u excited anymore

Preston (Dallas)

What trade do you think is the most likely to happen for the Rangers? And is OJ Mayo more likely to start or be the sixth man?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:30 PM)

Mayo will start. Can i be honest about the Rangers. I don't like any of the high-profile pieces available except Cole Hamels and I'm to sure I want to pay the cost to rent him for 3 months.

Mike T (Arlington)

Assuming Dez is found guilty + NFL conduct punishment, do you think the front office has to start looking at possible trade combinations to get a WR in here?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:31 PM)

That's a big assumption. I'm not ready to do that yet. I've always thought the were going to add a WR. Nothing has changed

Josh (Lancaster)

How can you honetsly say this team is "average" to "below average"? You compare this team to the Championship team, this team has more depth and give Carlisle a whole training camp and a full season to get his rotations and figure things out, I'll put my money on Carlisle on a FULL SEASON not a shortened season like last season.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:33 PM)

dude, this ain't complicated. Carlisle is a terrific coach, but he couldn't make last season's team avoid getting swept. He needs talent. There's not a player remotely close to being more than pretty good that they just acquired. That sound like average to me. It's not a crime, but it is what it is

MJ (Los Angeles)

What are you thoughts on Costa and the Center position? Will he get his act together (long snapping being the biggest concer) and be an above average center?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

i'd be concerned. He's not powerful enough, based on what we've seen, to handle the position. That's why they signed 2 huge guards, one of whom is hurt

Derrin (Plano, TX)

Is this a make or break year for the troubled Dez Bryant? I know his family structure is not the best. However, do you think the Cowboys will re-evaluate his status with the team if Bryant does not have a healthy and very productive year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:34 PM)

it has been that ways since the season ended. The third year is the year every player need to show what he has

TexasSteveO (Austin)

With what you know is there any chance that there's morre to the story given the history of Dez's mother? I just don't see how the police saw no visable injuries and then 2 days later she is battered.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:36 PM)

once the officers who answered the call filed their report, the detectives took a look at the report the next day and did a follow up interview. They concluded a crime had been committed and a warrant was issued. Let's see how it plays out today.

NYC Cowsheep (New York, NY)

JJT, if we didn't franchise Anthony Spencer (which was a dumb move to begin with, I think Victor Butler could've stepped in), would the Cowboys have enough cap-room to re-sign Laurent Robinson?Considering Dez's legal issue and Miles' hamstring/injury past, Laurent's contract would seem like a bargain right now.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

salary cap is always fluid as Stephen Jones says. I figure they believe it's easier to find a WR than a LB regardless of what you think of Spencer.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

What's up with all the haterade?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:41 PM)

it's the truth - not hate.

Paul (Menifee, CA)

Will the Rangers win it all this year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:42 PM)

Sure they can. Will they? No idea. They haven't played their best baseball since April, but they've had a lot of injuries. Let's see if they take off when Feliz, Ogando, Uehara and Lewis return because their pen should be tremendous

James bond (Dallas)

Why do you report on teams you clearly hate? Have you ever written something positive? Dallas fans deserve better than your awful spew

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:43 PM)

that's such a copout answer. The teams dictate what I write

Max (Dallas)

Hi JJT super happy to have you back. To my question- Dan Graziano made alot of excuses for Dez Bryant about being just 23 years old and although I really like the kid I think people making excuses for him his whole life is the problem and it is not Dallas job to raise him . I hope he gets it together but the only way he will is taking responsibilty for himself and quit acting like a teenager. 23 is old enough to know better . How do you stand on this issue .

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:46 PM)

That's a really tough question because no one handles their problems the same. We're all different. Dez is 23. his mom is 36. You do the math. He found out his mom was a lesbian when he was about 13 and walked in on her. That's about 1 percent of the iceberg. What he has to do is accept the fact he has some issues and get some professional help, so he can work through them. If he doesn't,it's going to be hard for him to succeed. It's more complicated than just saying he should man up

Joseph (Charlottesville, VA)

I understand your thinking about the Mavs' moves to a point. But aren't we better than last year? And if so, why not write this article last year?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:47 PM)

i don't think so. I think it's the same. I was a critic of letting Tyson go and wrote it at the time

Dave (Big D.)

In what order do the major Dallas sports teams (Cowboys, Mavs, Rangers, Stars) win a championship? I'm going with Rangers, Cowboys, Mavs, Stars.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

rangers, cowboys, mavs and stars. Rangers only team in the next 5 years

parker (new london tx)

will this mavs team be a fifty win playoff team?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:48 PM)

nope. I don't see them in playoffs this year.

Garret (Denton)

We couldn't get the big splashes, but the team the Mavericks have now is definitely a lot better. I wish we had the team from the year we won, we could have had caron butler back to add to that lineup. But last season was a slap in the face to Dirk's final years. Although you're right that this new team isn't the best, but i can guarantee you that Mark Cuban didn't plan on winning the championship with the team that he had in 2011. As a fan, I am pretty happy with this new roster. We don't need a huge player to win won. We acquired good players without giving up too much. I mean, Ian Mahinmi for Darren Collison? we obviously got the better end of that deal. The chemistry Kaman already has with Dirk from the German National team, Brand is a starter that we will use as a back up (thats a great commodity). Mayo is young, athletic and has proven he can be a go-to guy. Oh and Dahntay Jones, his attitude will bring a fire. I know I am a little too optimistic, but given our circumstances, you have to admit, the Mavericks' did a great job with recovering and making a BETTER team.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

you're right, you're a little too optimistic. That's your right as a fan. I'm not mad at you

mike (hamburg)

Do you think Mayo can step up his game and (pray!) and become something like a borderline allstar with the mavs. i like the acquisition, you?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:49 PM)

no, no, no. If that were the case, why would Memphis let him go for nothing

CowboyRT (Atlanta, GA)

If Jason Garrett was the head coach instead of Wade Phillips, do we even draft Dez Bryant? Jason Garrett drafts don't appear to be so kind to guys with character risk.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

nope. he doesn't fit "the right kind of guy standard"

DAYLON (DALLAS)

Don't mind the haters JTT, if you don't always have the Mavs and Cowboys winning titles, then they'll hate on you. I've never seen a city where the "homer" in fans is so prevalent that they can't take reality. The Mavs moves were good, not great.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

i thought I wrote that...lol

Joseph (Arlington)

I'm a little confused how you could list all those teams having gotten better. Perry Jones makes OKC that much better? Odom makes the Clips that much better? Memphis hasn't had any activity this summer, nor the Spurs. The only team to clearly have gotten better is the Lakers. Also, just because another team doesn't choose to retain a certain player doesn't qualify that player as damaged goods. There are several reasons players aren't retained and in Brand and Mayo's case it was their teams couldn't afford to retain them.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:50 PM)

they were already better. It was up to the Mavs to close the gap

Tony Romo (Dallas)

Will I ever be able to play golf in peace?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

dude, I hope so

Gary (Fort Wayne)

What's your favorite TV show?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

Law & Order, the first 48 anything on Investigation ID. Notice a trend?

Akash (Dallas)

If the Mavs get Delonte back and other guy who can shoot the ball. The Mavs WILL be a 5th seed.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:51 PM)

whatever....lol

Hugo (Fort Worth)

First T.O., then Pacman Jones, and now Dez Bryant becoming a distraction for the Cowboys. Do you feel Jerry has lost control of his organization?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:52 PM)

no. I wouldn't lump Dez with those 2 just yet

zack (dallas)

the reason Memphis didn't resign OJ is because they already have a more than serviceable 2 guard who fits better with the team since they usually pound the ball inside with Gasol and Randolph. also, they are maxed out in the salary cap and OJ didn't like his role on the team anyway. you really are a dumbass, even casual fans know this type of info.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:53 PM)

Bottom line is they let him go for nothing. That was the point. That Memphis said we'd rather get rid of you than get an asset back.

Gandhi (Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii by way of Las Colinas)

With all the bizarre sports writers taking up golf at ESPN Dallas these days, you need some clubs right? Your getting them from an expert right? From me at OldSchoolCaddie.com?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

i have some heads, I might put on some tees...lol

Bryson (Dallas)

Do you think Dominique Jones and/or Roddy B. will ever get a chance to play significant minutes? With OJ Mayo, VC, Darren Collison in the mix now it doesnt seem like it.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

they've had their chances. Those ships, I think, have sailed

Mike T (Arlington)

Assuming the Rangers do get a starting pitcher (Hamels, Grienke, etc), where does Oswalt and his 6.26 ERA fit in to all this?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:54 PM)

long man in the BP. Not sure if he makes postseason roster

Davy (Texarkana)

Is Calvin Hill working with Dez Bryant? Why do the Cowboys not have a better circle of influence created for Dez. It's not like they couldn't see the potential for this. Eugene Parker/Rosenhaus could have done this for him from finances/marketing/mentors. The Cowboys put that kind of work in with Pacman. Why not here? He needs a bubble around him.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:55 PM)

the Cowboys work with him, but it's his responsibility - not theirs

Joseph (Arlington)

You keep talking about the possibilities of why Memphis didn't offer Mayo a contract or why Brand was amnestied by Philly, but you haven't considered payroll? Memphis already has lots of money going to Conley, Gasol, Randolph, and Gay. Philly wanted to get Young, so they had to amnesty Brand. Sometimes players are let go not because of a lack of talent, but because of money.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

they get let go because teams decide they're not worth the money, which means their performance has not met expectations of the club when they gave them the deals

Omskillet (LA, CA)

JJT are you just mad you didn't post the opus you had written for the Mavs getting D-WILL?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:56 PM)

i was on vacation, so I had no opus prepared....sorry...lol

lopez12 (dallas)

do you really think the mavs are not better the nuggets, timberwolves, suns, grizzlies, blazers, and the jazz

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:57 PM)

the grizzlies were better last year, Denver had essentially the same record and Minneosta and Portland will be better

Joseph (Arlington)

I see you've yet to answer any of my questions regarding how it was probably more of an issue of payroll concerns than lack of talent over why Mayo, Brand, and Collison weren't retained by their teams. Could it be because it weakens your argument? The only player acquired with a strong possibility of flopping is Kaman, but at this point I'd take a cardboard box over Haywood. Watching Haywood play with the ball was like watching a caveman discover fire, perplexed and totally unsure of himself.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:58 PM)

i don't care about your argument. All I know is Memphis kicked him to the curb. If he was ALL OF THAT, they would've kept him. That's all.

Zach (Dallas, TX)

With the Mav's going all in on the the d will and howard and not getting either. It seems crazy to me that they are reseting to go all in again for free agency next year. What do you think is going to happen when/if that doesn't work out?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

they'll add another group of guys on one year deals and MFFLs will think they're going to win a title with them

Shawn (Boone, NC)

What's up JJT? Glad that you had a refreshing vacation. What should I expect from the Boys this year. Will be be a 500 team or better?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (1:59 PM)

8-8 until I get to TC and see more

Tom (Albuquerque)

Have you ever had a player intimidate you during an interview. If so, who and how?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:00 PM)

nope. I'm a grown man. So are they. The last dispute of note I had was with Jay Ratliff a couple of years ago. I'm not hard to find, if someone is looking for me.

Dominique Toney (lewisville)

I dont like the fact that you seem to bash the mavs and cowboys alot but i like how you write and are a good journalist. Now my question is outside of the thunder and lakers the rest of the west is a question mark. Do you think the mavs can get maybe a 6 seed or 7 seed and shock a higher seed in the first round if all our new pieces come together?

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:00 PM)

sure, but I don't think it will happen

Pepe (Plano,TX)

Is there any update on the Mavs signing CJ Miles. He had sushi with Coach Carlisle about a month ago, but we haven't heard anything since

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:01 PM)

he's a Sky High man like myself, so maybe they'll get it done. That said, he'd also fall under the category of guys allowed to leave

Jordan J (Dallas Tx)

Your so dumb you cant tell me the mavericks are not better . They are more explosive more versitile. More dept of the bench and way better bigs. So far Kaman is the best center in mavs history. OJ Mayo is a younger version of JT. Dirk is still dirk he still has his one legged fade away. As long as Carlisle is i trust this team . and cuban and donnie are running thing were always gonna be contender wheter you like it or not your such a hater JJT!

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:02 PM)

Dirk wasn't dirk last year. Why do you think 34 YO Dirk will be better than 33 YO Dirk. He's still fantastic, but we saw the start of the descent last year

Joseph (Arlington)

So then using your logic, Dallas knew something was wrong with Nash and Chandler to let them walk. They knew they weren't worth the money. Nash went on to win MVP the next two years and Chandler DPOY, but by your standards, Dallas was right in that they weren't worth the money.

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:03 PM)

They though Nash would break down eventually and essentially the same as Chandler. It didn't have anything to do with giving them away because they didn't want them

Jean-Jacques Taylor
  (2:03 PM)

I'd love to stay, but I have some other responsibilities today. There's nothing wrong with thoughtful debate. Peace. See you next week
