Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:44 AM)

Greetings all, nice to see you. Thanks for coming. Early start and early finish today as life gets in the way a little.

Mason Strange (Fort Worth, Texas)

If you could be the owner of one team in the AFC South which one would you pick?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:44 AM)

Texans I think. Most valuable.

Mason Strange (Fort Worth, Texas)

What would the Texans regular season record look like if T.J. Yates was the starting QB from week 1?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:44 AM)

Not as good as with Matt Schaub.

Mason Strange (Fort Worth, Texas)

Do you go to AFC South training camps?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:45 AM)

I do. Will post soon about my travel schedule. About three days everywhere.

Ben (Houston)

Are you back at work yet? It's hard to tell when you are working or on vacation.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:46 AM)

Not a very discerning reader then. I'm not going to apologize for taking vacation, sorry. Look at the blog this week, it's pretty well populated for a dead week in July.

Mason Strange (Fort Worth, Texas)

Do you think Wade Phillips will have his 2nd year slump he is known for?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:46 AM)

I think the defense is probably not quite as good. But it should still be good.

art (dc)

any thoughts on weber potentially leaving the preds?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:47 AM)

Predators have to match. You can't lose Ryan Suter and Shea Weber for four first-round draft picks. Flyers did the hard work. Now Preds just have to face the realities of doing business and having a star.

Colin (Ft Lauderdale)

How long until gabbert loses starting role

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:48 AM)

If he's really bad and they have faith in Henne, it could happen in a month. But I don't think that is what pans out. I think he'll be at least OK.

Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)

PK, Back to Tight Ends?Taylor Thompson seems to be rounding out nicely. Hasslebeck even mentioned during an interview that the kid can catch! Something we don?t usually see enough of around here. Is it time I move on from Jared Cook? I mean the dude is just not developing enough to trust him on the field?let alone his FisherBuilt hype!!

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:50 AM)

Rounding out nicely? From a rookie minicamp, 10 OTAs and a three-day minicamp, we're declaring he's rounding out nicely? Michael, you're smarter than that. Slow down. Jared Cook is the No. 1 TE. Thompson will contribute.

Jordan (NYC)

I tweeted some extrapolated Kenny Britt stats to you last night. Do you think there's any chance he can stay healthy for a full season and come close to those numbers? 94 receptions, 1700 yards, 19 TDS

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:51 AM)

I doubt we get 16 games of a full-speed, completely healthy Britt. And those expectations are too big for a 16-game season.

150bigdaddy (houston)

i think Tennessee has very dangerous talent on offense. The only thing that may hold this team up is Chris Palmer.I think Munchak will have a big say in how this offense is run as Palmer will constantly try to throw 15-20 yard routes.Palmer phased CJ out of the offense last year 70 less carries than the previous. If they work out the kinks this is a very dangerous team for any team in the NFL.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:52 AM)

Yeah, what was he thinking "phasing out" a guy who was curling up and going to the ground on first contact?

Bud Adams (Ivory Tower)

Should I be in the Hall of Fame?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:52 AM)

Nope.

Julian (Tallahassee, FL)

Paul, I'm a big Jags fan and I think we will surprise a lot of people this season. My concern, however, lays with the rest of the division, particularily Tennessee. I don't know why there are so many who are so down on CJ. Yes, he had a down year comparable to his other seasons, but he still had a respectable yds/carry avg and still scored a reasonable amount of TD's. I honestly believe he returns to game-changing form this year. Tennessee has always caused my ire more than any other team and I don't see them being anything less than respecatable. I love my Jags, but Tennessee keeps me up at nights.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:53 AM)

But you don't spend a lot of time pondering Houston?

Brian (Douglas, GA)

Do you think perception is reality in how the national media and fans of other teams portray Jacksonville?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:53 AM)

Of course not. People don't pay close attention to the Jags and easily move to default storylines that may be outdated or inaccurate. But the team has to earn attention to change perception.

Jordan (Nashville)

Any update on the Locker/Hasselback competition?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:54 AM)

You'd like an update on their vacations?

Fernando (Largo, FL)

THe Titans schedule is pretty difficult to start out the year. What sclae does the NFL use in creating the scedhules see as how NE has one of the easiest. Seems a little backwards to me. The better you are the easier your schedule is??

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:56 AM)

Only two games are based on hos you finished last season. You play teams in your division home and away. You play an AFC division (which rotates), you play an NFC division (which rotates) and you play the team in the other two divisons of your conference who finished in the same spot you did. Also, last year's records as an indicator of this year's schedule difficulty isn't usually an accurate barometer.

Mantaur (Parts Unknown)

Which do you prefer? A crazy weather playoff game or a perfect conditions playoff game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:56 AM)

Crazy weather for sure.

Andre (Houston)

Without Finn at Tennessee, will I ever throw another punch in the NFL?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:56 AM)

Don't you play at Detroit on Thanksgiving?

Patrick (Houston)

Is Darryl Sharpton considered the favorite starter alongside Cushing in the middle? If not, why?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:57 AM)

No, because he's been hurt and they love Bradie James.

Cody Hughes (Lafayette, IN)

Do you think the Colts will keep Dwight Freeney on the roster this year and take the hit against the cap or releasing him and letting Jerry Hughes play OLB opposite Mathis?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:57 AM)

If they were releasing him, they would have done it a long time ago and used the money elsewhere. They don't need/ can't use it now.

Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)

Paul, Are bald people at a higher risk for skin cancer? If so, I?m growing my hair back. You in?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:57 AM)

We wear hats. It's not real complicated.

Seth Thomas (Lewiston, ID)

From what you've observed so far this offseason, how good is Kendall Wright? It sounds like the Titans have a lot of confidence in him.

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:58 AM)

What team isn't expressing great confidence in its first-round pick right now?

Marcel (Texas)

Who are some players The Colts should pursue next Off Season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:58 AM)

I can't answer that at this time.

Brian (In front of a computer screen)

So, can MJD hold out until week 8 (I think) and then return to still get credited with a season toward free-agency?

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:59 AM)

He's got two years left. If he does the minimum to get credit for this season, what's he gained since he'll still be under contract for another season? None of this is about gaining credit toward free agency. He's at a point where if he isn't under contract, he's be unrestricted.

Jonathan (Houston)

I know the Texans usually only keep 5 WRs, which is less than most other teams, since they very rarely run even 3 WR sets. Two questions, any chance they keep 6 WRs this season, and; what position do they stock more than usual of in place of the WRs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:00 PM)

They could keep six, I suppose. Outside linebacker is a position that gets a lot of roster space with the 3-4.

Eugene Monroe (UVA campus)

So I was under the impression I had a breakthrough year last year. Yet I saw an article on ESPN that said I gave up way too many sacks. Then again, Gabbert's pocket presence was rough last year. Give me the truth! I can handle the truth!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

You were better, you improved. You were not elite. Jags expect and need you to emerge as elite.

Michael Roos (Left Tackle, TN)

PK, now you know as well as I that anyone Fisher gets excited about is usually a mediocre to solid ball player with a few great games sprinkled in....i.e. Cortland Finnegan! Now me...I have a good eye and high football IQ. You know I had to help VY with the play calling in the huddle remember?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

Of all the guys you could choose to be in here, as much as I like Roos, I find him an odd selection.

Rob (Indy)

Why does it seem like RG3 is getting more coverage than Luck? Did Indy draft the wrong guy?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

Yes, the verdict on draft picks comes before they play a down, based on the coverage they get! You have nailed it.Skins are in camp, and RG3 has signed. Colts aren't in camp and Luck hasn't. Thus the difference. [After we finished, Luck signed. And got attention.]

Mike (Work)

I've read that the reason there are so many high draft picks unsigned is that teams are trying to insert some language into contracts that the players aren't on board with...what's your take on this? I thought the slotting system was supposed to make things easier...

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

It's early still. It really is.

Blueman (Indy)

More important at Colts camp installing new systems or evaluating players ability to fit in the new systems?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

You have who you have. Additions at this point can't be major ones for 2012. So I say installation.

Carl Carlson (Everywhere)

Paul Kuharsky - you were just named one of the top 100 most important sports talk radio hosts around! What are you going to do next?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

Chat!

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

So far the chat is looking good. The vacation has seemed to resharpen your witty comebacks.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:11 PM)

I've been back for some time.

Scott (Houston)

Other than first rounders, what rookie from each team are you most interested in watching during your stint at each training camp?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

TEN -- Thompson. HOU -- Martin. IND -- Hilton. JAX -- Anger.

Fernando (Largo, FL)

There has been a lot of talk of how the DL coach for the titans will help them pass rush better. Is there any other coach that you could think of that made a big impact like the one the Titans think he will make? I apologize that I cant think of his name.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

He's not the line coach, he's the pass rush coach: Keith Millard. That they need him makes me wonder about the Dline coach, Tracy Rocker. Yes, there are key new assistants all over. I wrote about them this week. Receivers coach Jerry Sullivan in Jacksonville is another example.

Blueman (Indy)

When you go to training camp what are you looking for most? Position battles, overall tone of camp, player developement...?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

Some of everything. Mostly anything off the beaten path.

Shad Khan (My Yacht)

So I saw a report saying I overpaid for the Jags by 30 million. The way I see it there are only 32 folks like me in the world. I'm not sure they understand how lucrative the NFL is. Did I overpay?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

I think anyone buying an NFL team these days overpays.

Jeff (Cleveland)

Who will replace DeMeco Ryans spot on defense for the texans?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

Bradie James.

Ben Bevel (Amarillo, TX)

Who do think think has the upper hand in making the active roster by the end ot the preseason? Beck or Keenum?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

I wouldn't carry a third. If you like Keenum, practice squad him. If you like Beck, he's your third.

Mason Strange (Fort Worth, Texas)

Have you ever tailgated at Reliant Stadium?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

No. I work on Sundays.

Blake (Portland)

The line on the Jags for the superbowl odds is 168-1 and I just put my hundred bucks down yesterday. Those oddsd are some of the best/worst depending on how you look at it out of any NFL team. When i look though i see a possible dominate defense, and if the offense can just catch up halfway anything is possible right. Does the bet get your stamp of approval though for what the payout could be? Low risk high reward, right?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Sure. Go for it. But I don't see their best-case scenario as Super Bowl. It's playoffs.

Brian (tn)

Whats the % chance the titans go to the playoffs in your mind?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

Seventeen.

Rick (Nashville)

I'm going to Vegas with some friends for our fantasy draft and the season opener. Wanna come?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:20 PM)

You get the flight and hotel, I'll get the first round of drinks?

Michael Hickenbottom (San Antonio, TX)

Have you ever been recognized by fans who try to talk to you? Annoying, isn't it?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

People talk to me all the time. If I didn't like it, it would be silly of me to be in this job. Just talked to some guys last night at the fine Gaslight Anthem show here in Nashvegas.

Blaise (FSU)

Paul I'm an fan who enjoys football but can admit I'm naive. What can I hope to hear from jaguars training camp as realistic improvement instead of merely media hype.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

You really fear media hype about the Jaguars? I think you'll be safe.

Gary Kubiak (Houston, Texas)

How likely is it that my team can go 6-0 in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

Highly unlikely. Very hard to win them all or lose them all in a division. Games that look like mismatches often are not because of how well division teams know each other.

Fernando (Largo, FL)

Do you think the Tians will be able to sell all their home games out again this year? Living in Florida Im lucky to catch a few of them. Will teams actually turn to the new 85% capacity to avoid blackouts? I think i read that they have to share revenue with the visiting team if they do, correct?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

Titans didn't lower their blackout number and I am sure they will continue to sell out.

Zach (Tallahassee)

Say Andre Branch crushes all expectations gets 12 sacks this year along with 12 or more from Mincey, and Gabbert plays above average. Do you think the JAGS make playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

I do. But 24 sacks from Branch and Mincey combined is not happening.

Corey (D.C.)

I know its the offseason and every players looks amazing in shorts, but I keep reading how good Dorin Dickerson looks up in Buffalo ( i believe Pitt and NE also gave him a look but passed). My question is, do you think Houston gave up on him too soon since they have a need at WR and he was raw, or was he just not showing any improvement?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

I have no issue with anyone giving up on Dorin Dickerson, even if he pans out going forward.

Blueman (Indy)

More important when going to training camps, GPS in the rental car or knowing the best place to "rehydrate" after long hot summer day?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

I bring my own GPS and know my way around anyway. No time, really, for rehydration. I know people don't want to hear it, but amp trips are a long cry from vacation stops!

Justin Blackmon (Everbank Practice Field)

Let's play floor/ceiling on my career! I see my floor as....Mike Williams (one recently cut from Seattle) and my ceiling as Anquan Boldin. Am I right and what's your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

I like those, Justin. Good work. Need to see you in some games to develop a stronger gut feeling. I think you're going to be good.

Zach (Tallahassee)

Is Mercedes going to live up to his contract and play like an emerging elite tight end like he did two years ago? Or could you see Zach Miller taking over the starting spot if Mercedes does what he did last year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

They won't be benching Lewis, whether he's the 2011 version, the 2012 version or -- most likely -- something in between.

Patrick (Houston)

Chances that the Texans end up with two 1,200 yard rushers this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Very slim. Why would Tate get enough carries to post that yardage?

Ohio University (Ohio)

Any chance Lavon Brazill actually gets to see the field this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:29 PM)

In Indy, everyone has a chance to see the field.

Trip (Jagsonville)

I have heard the Jags may be able to take the tarps off seats for certain games of their choice. Is this true?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:30 PM)

They want to. And they certainly employ people who are capable of physically doing it. The question is what game(s) will they be selling so many tickets to that they need the seats?

Mason Strange (Fort Worth, Texas )

Could Ben Tate be a reliable starter for another team?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

Probably. Also depends which team.

Jason (only Texans fan in Ohio) (Cincinnati)

1-10 scale, what is your confidence level in the Texans recieving corps panning out to be adaquate enough to let the Texans advance deep into the playoffs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

If they are healthy at receiver, it's not a position that's gong to stop them from being good. They need Owen Daniels and Arian Foster healthy and catching passes too.

Blueman (Indy)

With 2 adays being a thing of the past does that mean longer onfield sessions or a lot more time in the filmroom/classroom learning systems?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

They are on the field twice a day still. It's just that one of those is a walk-through.

Erick (Texas)

I read somewhere that the Texans were offered a first round pick from the Bengals for Ben Tate. Obviously turned down. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:35 PM)

I think unless you tell me where you read it and I find that to be credible, I'm not going to give it credence. And that would be a dumb offer by Cincy and a dumb turndown by Houston.

Brandon (San Antonio, TX)

Where do you put the chances that one of the two rookie offensive linemen get the starting job in Houston come September?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Newton isn't a rookie. I won't be surprised if Newton or Brooks win a spot. Just not both.

Michael Fabiano (NFL Fantasy)

Paul, you have the fifth pick of your draft. You use it on....

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

See how I might need to know who the first four were?

John (Indy)

More interesting to watch develop this season: Indy offense or Indy defense?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

How could anyone say defense? With Andrew Luck, it's got to be offense.

Jay ((Knoxville, TN))

Titans open at home with Patriots. Is 59-0 still fresh in their minds or are they a new/different team now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

Ancient history.

Steve (Longview, TX)

The Titans payed a lot to get a very nice outdoor screen, yet, their turf is worse then most Texas High Schools fields. Why not invest in keeping the knees of your players healthy. And not in replays and T-Rac shenanigans.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

What knee injuries were caused by the turf?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

OK folks, I came early as I need to leave early. Thanks for coming. Be well.
