Chat with Wally Matthews

Wallace Matthews
  (11:55 AM)

Good morning everyone and welcome to this week's live chat, coming to from the pressbox at Yankee Steambath, uh, Stadium. We'll get started in a couple of minutes

Eric (Boston)

If Soriano opts out after this season, do the Yankees bring him back?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:01 PM)

Good question, tough answer. For one thing, opting out is risky for Sori; the Yankees owe him $14M. How many other teams will give him more? Would he give up some dollars in exchange for more years? and for the yankees, I think a lot of it depends on how/if Mariano comes back. If there's any doubt about his ability, they might be tempted to re-sign Sori to a longer term deal

Jim (New York)

Do you think Derek Jeter can get 4,500 hits? How long will he play? Five more seasons?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:02 PM)

is this a serious question? Jeter needs 800 hits to reach 4,000, which means 200 a year through his 42nd birthday. So, in a word, no

Jeremy (NY)

please tell me the yanks aren't going to overpay for victorino!

Wallace Matthews
  (12:03 PM)

i doubt the Yankees will overpay for anyone at this point. Why should they? they're 22 games over .500. if something good falls into their laps, they'll take it, but I don;t see them giving up much of anything at this point

Jeremy (NY)

any chance the knicks get involved in the upton trade talks?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:03 PM)

yes. he will be the starting point guard next year

Eric (NY, NY)

While CC looked great last night and Nova/Hughes and to some extent Kuroda/Garcia have looked pretty good lately would the Yankees even consider a move for a starter or is LF/bench/speed more where they should target help? Buying from real strength always a good thing.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:05 PM)

As Cashman said to me last week, "I'm interested in anything that's good and free" Not too many quality SPs fit that criteria. If anything, I could see a backup OF, preferably a CF, with speed, now that Gardner's return is officially in serious doubt. But I would not expect any blockbuster moves, for the reason you mentioned. The Yankees are dealing from strength

Jeremy (NY)

how close is aardsma to returning?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:06 PM)

not as close as he appeared to be a couple of weeks ago, before he had his setback. Now, I'm sure Joba will be back first

Nikhil (Boston)

Thoughts on how Kuroda settles down today? Fly ball pitcher, best TOR batters against him (historically) are Vizquel (not a HR threat) and Kelly Johnson (15-20 HR guy)? 3-0 in day games, 6-3 at home with a 2.58, I think he throws a gem today

Wallace Matthews
  (12:06 PM)

Kuroda had a terrible time with this lineup in May at the Dome, but is a different pitcher now than he was then. I expect him to handle the Joey Bats-less Jays pretty handily today

abe (monsey, new york)

i believe the stats show clearly that alex rodriguez is much more productive wehn he is the DH. Will we see more Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix at 3b as the season goes on and even into the playoffs because the Yankees are a better team that way/

Wallace Matthews
  (12:10 PM)

This season, you;re absolutely right -- .344 as DH, .243 as 3B, about same HR frequency -- and I think the plan is to give him as many DH days as possible. But you must admit, he is also an outstanding third baseman and if they could, the Yankees would like him on the field as many times as his 37-year-old body will allow him to

Jake (New York)

Do you think the yankees should be searching for a pitcher? Yes, their rotation has been solid, but outside of CC and Pettite I really don't trust any of them come playoff time.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:12 PM)

Not necessarily. With CC appearing to be back from the groin injury and Pettitte seemingly progressing well, i think the rotation is good enuf to get them by for the next month or so. Playoff time is another story, but remember,, last year's team wasn't done in by pitching in october, but by the lack of timely hitting

Oliver (New York, NY)

Do you see the yankees making any moves in LF now that it appears Gardner is out for the year? Victorino? Upton? Stick with Raul and Andruw? (who dont get me wrong have been outstanding this year)

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

I asked Girardi this last night and he said he is comfortable with Jones/Ibanez in left and Wise as the backup CF. Of course, if a player like Victorino or Upton became available at a reasonable cost, I think cashman would go for it, but if the price is too high, I think the Yankees feel it would be safe to take a pass

Mike Tyson (Las Vegas)

Who was a better champ? Me or Ali?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:13 PM)

I love ya, bro, but Ali would have beaten you at the press conference

theboogeydown (out east)

With Swisher's contract coming to an end and a perceived unwillingness by most to not give him a fatter one, any chance we unload him for a greater need (better question if Gardner's return was imminent)

Wallace Matthews
  (12:14 PM)

i think you answered your own question. Swisher would have been a lot more expendable if Gardner was coming back. I think Swish is here for the duration now

Dan (NJ)

Time to play oddsmaker: If the Yankees acquire one player at deadline, who will it be?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:15 PM)

I'll take a stab: Victorino

Oliver (New York, NY)

Do you think A rod is turning things around? Hes hit some balls extremely hard recently and it looks like he might be getting in one of those grooves

Wallace Matthews
  (12:16 PM)

He hit several balls hard last night, including a rocket right at the centerfielder in the third inning. But it's still mystifying why a guy who is supposedly healthy this year is having so much trouble putting the ball over the fence in a HR-happy park like the one he plays in. So before I predict an A-Rod hot streak, I need to see a little more

Albert (Brooklyn)

Wally,do you think the Yankees will go after a left fielder now that Brett Gardner is out for a longer than we thought?or are they happy with Andruw Jones and Raul Ibanez who can't field so well but can hit?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:17 PM)

they say no, and Girardi said last night he was happy with Jones and Ibanez, which of course is easy to say when one guy hits a grand slam on Monday and the other hits a 3-run bomb on Tuesday

Oliver (New York, NY)

What are the chances we see Mo this season? I put it at about 40%. I think hes really serious about doing it

Wallace Matthews
  (12:19 PM)

i would say zero. Mo is an optimistic guy with a lot of faith, but even the yankees seem to be treating it as wishful thinking

Fred (Tampa)

Thanks for your time Wally. Only mid-July but what do you think the Yankees do about RE & C next year. Don't see Cash bring back Swisher except for 1 or 2 yr for not much more than he's now making. The way Martin is hitting he won't have much leverage. Maybe he could revert back to last year's contract of $5ish million for a year possibly two. Anyway Nunez is a candidate for RE. He appears he can hit albeit not for a RE power numbers.

Wallace Matthews
  (12:20 PM)

You're very welcome. It seems like Martin should have jumped at whatever deal he and the Yankees were discussing in spring training. And I don;t think Swisher will be a yankee next year. as for Nunez, whatever he did to his thumb in AAA has taken forever to heal, and his defensive liabilities seem not to be limited to the infield. I think a new RF will be on the post-season shopping list

Joe (New York)

If Joba & Aardsama comes back do u see them trading a reliever

Wallace Matthews
  (12:21 PM)

it's possible because if there's one area where they have a surlus, it's in the bullpen. I would think Logan, Eppley and Rapada would have some value to someone

Oliver (New York, NY)

Do you expect Pettitte to be back the first week in September? Allowing him to get a few start before the playoffs begin?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:22 PM)

tough to say exactly but he seemed to be walking fine in the clubhouse this morning, albeit with his lower leg tightly wrapped.

Irving (wyoming)

What the hell do the yankees do with Arod going forward?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:22 PM)

swallow hard and cut him a big check twice a month for the next five years. Thanks, Hank!

Fred Katz (Madison, WI)

Better rivalry: Yankees-Red Sox or Feinsand-Carig?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:23 PM)

feinsand-carig is more competitive

Bob (NY)

Why do these fans and commenters believe that some scrap heap pick up or an outside SP will be better than Kuroda/Nova/Hughes in the playoffs?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:23 PM)

because they're never satisfied

Will (New York)

Hey Wally, I can't believe the Yanks are going to try to get the payroll down to 189 by i believe 2014. Why, I know it won't likely impact resigning Granderson and Cano. But i would love for them to sign Hamels this offseason. It actually makes me think did this impact them not going harder after Chapman, Darvish, and Cespedas. Boy if atleast one or two of those guys wow. I just don't get it ?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:24 PM)

because George III was willing to win at any cost and Prince Hal is not. simple. the old man was a fan and the kid is a business man. And $189 million spent correctly should be enough to buy anyone a winner

Joe (New York)

What position do u think yanks need to adress the most

Wallace Matthews
  (12:25 PM)

i think they could use a backup outfielder, preferably one who can play CF, and preferably one with some speed, because right now they don;t have any. a-Rod leads the team with 10 SBs. Think about that for a moment

Bob (NY)

I know he is sitting today, so it's probably not the best day to ask, but is there any concern of Granderson getting worn out starting in CF everyday? What about Cano at 2B with ARod/Jeter getting a lot of DH starts?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:26 PM)

they say no, but how could there not be? Both he and Cano play just about every day because there are no viable backups to them, and it could be a problem down the road

Ed (McLean, VA)

Do you think we will ever again see Eduardo Nunez in The Bronx? What would you see as being his ceiling?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:27 PM)

maybe, because cashman and Girardi seem to love his bat and legs. But I think he's a bench player at best because of his defensive shortcomings and sometime lack of instinct/smarts on the basepaths

Mike (West Babylon)

T or F. The heir apparent to Jeter at SS is currently in the Yankee system?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:28 PM)

they thought it was Nunez. So F

Zach (NYC)

What do you think is a likely timetable on seeing joba throw for the big league yankees?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

under the rules, he has to be promoted to the big leagues by august 10 --30 days after start of rehab assignment -- or assigned to a minro league club., so that';s your timetable

Phil (NJ)

hi wally, i wanted to talk about swish. i think his a free agent after this season (correct me if i'm wrong please) and i love him, his great with the glove and bat, and a real nice, funny clubhouse guy that every team would like to have. but assuming he'll command more money as a free agent and assuming the yanks wouldn't be able to sign him up, is it possible the yanks trade him to at least get something in return?

Wallace Matthews
  (12:29 PM)

you;re correct, Phil, he is a FA after this season and yeah, he would have been great trade bait if gardner had not gone down and stayed down. Now, I think they need to hold onto him for the remainder of the season

Wallace Matthews
  (12:30 PM)

Thanks for all the great questions, everyone. We'll do this again next week. Game coming up in a halfhour. Enjoy
