Let's start this chat now.
Hi Jared,Love your show, thanks for hosting.Do you think with Felton's fitness issues & Jason Kidd's legal conundrem, Kurt Thomas will see more time at the point this year than he has most of his career? Thanks in advance.
How does Felton and Kidd relate to Thomas? Different positions. Thomas will be serviceable at times; not all the time. His age obviously will limit him. When he does play, he'll be able to hit the 15-foot jumpshot and play tough defense, grab some rebounds. He's a smart veteran who will be a great locker room presence.
So it he Prigioni signing a formality? Are the Knicks just going through a FIBA process in that regard?
Yes, a formality. He addressed the signing with an Argentinian media outlet in a Knicks jersey. We have not spoken to him yet.
Do you think James White is going to be a serviceable back-up to J.R. Smith while Shumpert's out?
Defensively, I hear great things from his agent and some people who've watched him develop overseas. He plays hard and has a high motor. He's versatile and should help the Knicks by being able to defend multiple positions. Don't expect him to score much, but in transition he'll be lethal and he'll put up points here and there off backdoor cuts and offensive rebounds. His unbelievable athleticism will come in handy in many ways.
Forget Lin, is Spike Lee gonna be ok with Fields leaving? :)
I see Spike Lee rocking a Marcus Camby jersey next week, inspiring hope for Knicks fans by representing the team's 1999 run to the NBA Finals.
Hi Jared. I hate all those comments about trading STAT etc. I believe he is still great player and he is definetly a warrior (eye injures, knee injuries all these stuff and he is still here playing BBall). Fans of NYK are unpatience and short-memory. Can you please tell what you honestly think about STAT? I hope you are on my side ;). Adam
Read one of my recent posts on the Knicks blog about his offseason. He's putting in great work. I think he'll have a rebound season.
Gut feeling, who is still around at SG and F/C when the money finally dries up around the league?
The Knicks are obviously weakest at shooting guard with Iman Shumpert out until likely January. Here are some candidates: Ronnie Brewer and Maurice Evans (who have been confirmed as being on the Knicks' radar), Sonny Weems (the Raptors recently withdrew their qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent), Marco Belinelli (but he plays inconsistent defense) and Carlos Delfino (who could be the best option). If you have questions on specific players, let me know. I can tell you that most guys are looking for the bi-annual or mini mid-level exception, before the veteran's minimum, which is what the Knicks only have left. Therefore, a signing may not happening quickly.
How did Jeffries end up in Felton deal? Was there no other options for Knicks or did they need his bird rights to raise salary for Felton?
The Knicks got Camby, so Jeffries became a trading block piece. The Trail Blazers liked him for backup duties -- he's still very serviceable -- and Jeffries liked them. There was mutual interest there.
Are Carlos Delfino or Randy Foye REAL options? Do the Knicks have a chance? Kidd just released statement on Twitter.
Not Randy Foye. His agent told me a few weeks ago that the veteran's minimum is too low for him. Maybe that'll change? We'll see. There's some possibility with Delfino, but I still think the veteran's minimum could be too low for him as well. Melo and Delfino have had some battles. I'm sure Melo would love to have him on his side finally.
What are the status on these players? Raja Bell?Ronnie Brewer?Lou Amundosn?Kenyon Martin?
Bell hasn't had the Knicks on his radar. With Brewer, there is some mutual interest there. I'm not sure about Martin and Amundson. For now, the Knicks' focus appears to be shooting guard.
I think the Knicks should go after Michael Redd. They need a good shooter. What do you think about Redd, Raja Bell or Shannon Brown?
Bell and Brown are highly unlikely. Kedd can shoot, but defense? I think the Knicks would prefer a defensive shooting guard -- with Shumpert out -- and who can also shoot the three.
Is J.R. Smith definitely our starting SG now? Do the Knicks think he is consistent enough to be a starter?
Yes, right now.
Any chance white can start as a d specialist and keep jr coming off the bench to start the seasoN?? worst case senario of course
I don't see James White starting. Whoever else the Knicks acquire at shooting guard, if that happens, would be a more likely candidate to start, and then have Smith off the bench. We'll see.
How many wins you believe the Knicks will get?
45 to 55.
Jared, do you think that Jason Kidd and Raymond Felton would help the way Lin would have?
Absolutely. Veteran experience. Both can shoot the three. They're familiar with Melo, Amare and Tyson. If they stay healthy, they'll be great for the Knicks. Felton has to be in great shape. He already says he's working hard and ready to play now. That's a great sign.
Was there any benefits to the team now that Lin is gone? For example they don't have to worry about the Melo and Lin issue
The benefit is that they have Felton and Kidd. They have the potential to be really good in New York. There's no reason not to think so with what they've done in the past. Felton has to be in shape and Kidd has to be focused on the game. That off-the-court incident worried me for a second. And I do think Prigioni, with his tons of European experience, and his toughness, passing and health, will help, too.
You don't need to reference me, Jared, but here's Kidd's statement: https://twitter.com/RealJasonKidd/statuses/226375939364384768
Thank you. I saw it, too. We worked up a story on it. Check the site.
What is the next move for the Knicks if there is one? And is there a possibility for a sign and trade for Chris Paul in next year's free agency period?
I doubt Chris Paul happens. What trade assets do the Knicks have? This core, including Felton, will be together I envision for at least the next two years. Their focus right now appears to be adding a shooting guard.
Hey Jared, anyone you see the Knicks filling out the rest of the roster with? In particular sg.
See my earlier response to this question. Let me know if you have a question about a specific player. Thanks.
Will Raymond Felton live up to expectations
I just wrote a story on him. Check the Knicks Blog. I do like what I hear from him. He sounds like he's putting in the work now and confident he'll make a difference in New York. You have to be positive about the situation for now.
Why the Knicks let go Lin without even receive a pick? They could match and then trade him in Feb or next season. Still wondering why the let Lin go so easily.
It's a great question. I think it's partially that the backloaded deal made them re-think things last minute, and also that they liked Raymond Felton from the beginning. Keep in mind that he was on the Knicks' radar from the start of free agency. And based on what he did in New York during the 2010-11 season, playing at an All-Star level averaging career-highs in points (17.1) and assists (9.0), the Knicks probably feel he's still young enough (28) to get back to that level.
Can woodson get amare and melo to both maximize their skills on offense at the same time? That was d'antoni's biggest failure.
He asked them to work on certain things this offseason, and they're both putting in the work. More defined roles is key. They can't crowd the court together. Amare working with Hakeem Olajuwon is key because that'll help him play more in the post and allow Tyson to be more of a floater and high pick-and-roller at times. Melo will be Melo in the sense of creating plays and making things happen. Consistent passing and defense are two important development keys for him this next season. Overall, the team needs to develop more chemistry. The shortened season hurt that a bit, plus injuries, etc.
What speed of pace will the Knicks play next season with Felton running the point? And will they hold up against teams like OKC, Clippers, Lakers, and Heat?
Mike Woodson's philosophy is defense leads to great offense. So they'll push when they get steals and see the opportunity. But mostly, they'll be a halfcourt team.
How many good years do you think Kidd, Camby and Thomas have left in them?
Two to three years -- the championship window the Knicks are looking through.
Do you foresee a lineup in which both camby and chandler will be on the floor at the same time?
Absolutely. During games, to end games. A good amount I think. And why not? They're both reigning Defensive Players of the Year. The Knicks can go small or big. Their lineup offers that versatility.
When does amare and tyson's training with olajuwon begin?
Well, just Amare for now. August 5 to 19. Tyson may or may not join. Remember, the Olympic medal games are on August 12. Timing could be tight. We'll see.
Thoughts on Mike Woodson staying on as head coach?
Excellent. He proved himself in those 26 games to end the season. The players really like him, and that's a great start. And he not only coaches defense, but he gets the guys to buy in. That's hard to do, and he does it. Now, it's about developing that offensive chemistry.
It's obviously early, but looking forward what position would yourecommend the nYk draft next year? We have a first correct? Does Denver or Houston have right to switch with us or is that 2 years from now?
Perhaps an athletic three to help Melo a bit more with scoring from the swingman position. You always have to be careful not to burn out your best player as he approaches the age of 30.
Prediction on what Lin will average for points and assists his first year in Houston?
15 points and 7 assists per game. Keep in mind that he'll get plenty of minutes there.
Whats the chance that we pick up Ronnie Brewer?
50/50. He had a down year in Chicago last season, so his market value could be low. But I'm pretty sure his agent, Henry Thomas, who also represents Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, who handles big money, will push for bigger money for Brewer. After all, he is still young and can play. Brewer would be great in New York, though, and he could start at the two -- and allow J.R. Smith to flourish off the bench.
Do you see any possibility of Kidd starting even at his age?
Not with Felton in the mix now. But I can see Felton and Kidd sharing the backcourt together at times, with either running the point. Both are solid 3-point shooters, which Lin is still getting better at.
Hear anything new about Shumpert's rehab, and do athletes come back 100% from those type of injuries?
Prediction on what Felton will average for pts and ast ??
Will Chris Copeland get any burn?
Sorry, some questions posted quickly without my responses. Let me answer those three now. As for Chris Copeland, I like what I'm seeing from him in summer league. He's tough inside, has some nice post moves and he can hit the three. I could see him subbing in for Melo or Amare at times.
Prediction for Felton = 15 points and 8 assists per game. He has a lot of options. Melo of course, Amare posting up or rolling, Tyson rolling or off the lob, Novak and Smith spotting up, etc.
As for Shumpert, I hear he's progressing well. I would say January/February as the likeliest return. He should play half of the season, a good amount of time to get him back into flow and into playoff form. His perimeter defense is critical for the Knicks to make a deep playoff run.
Why did the knicks not have courtney lee on their radar...seems like he would have been a good fit
Because Lee was more expensive than what the Knicks could offer.
Any chance Billy Walker is on the Knicks radar because of his familiarity with the organization? Plays D, can shoot the 3, and would not be a problem when replaced by Shumpert later in the season. Also, would come for cheap.
Haven't heard anything on Bill Walker, so I'm going to say no.
As of right now, with health not being an issue, what lineup will we see to close out games? Kidd, Shump, Melo, Camby, Chandler?
Depends on many factors. Who's healthy, who's playing well in the moment, foul trouble. And why not Felton, or Amare? That's, like I said, why the Knicks' lineup is so unique. The versatility is there. They can go small or big depending on the opponent.
Where do the Knicks rank in the East?
Third or fourth. I think the Knicks can win the Atlantic Division, but the Celtics will be right there. And obviously the Heat aren't going anywhere.
Your thoughts about cooperation between Melo and Felton ?
They can play with each other (pick-and-roll) or off aeach other. Felton can play well off the ball as a knock-down 3-point shooter. Felton doesn't need the ball in his hands as much as Lin to make plays. Felton is a smart point guard who excels in transition and in halfcourt sets. He will give the Knicks different looks offensively, so they won't look stagnant on the court.
what did woodson ask j.r to work on this off season?
Tweeting more. Just kidding. He's been working with Melo's trainer Idan Ravin in Los Angeles. While he's tweeting a lot about his emerging golf game, he's getting after it in the gym and playing a lot of pickup.
If Melo did not act jealous of Linn's contract, would we have matched it?
There's a lot more to it than that. If you recall, Melo had dinner with Lin, Woodson and the coaching staff in Los Angeles. Reports say they were discussing plans for the upcoming season.
Any chance for Knicks to Conference Semifinals?
Yes, especially because I think their potential wins (around 45 to 55) will get them home court.
Knicks last season vs Knicks this season. Which team is better in your opinon ?
This season. Roster upgrades. Full training camp. Same head coach. Stability. Etc.
Why are the lakers in talks with the magic but the Knicks are not? They cant possibly tyson is better, and if you include a third team, they have a lot of assests to give... why not go after dwight?
Amare is seen as non-tradeable because of his contract. And the Knicks are not letting go of Melo. Those are two of the biggest reasons.
Do you think the knicks should have matched for fields or was his jumper so awful the knicks decided not to think twice?
No, it was way too high of an offer sheet. A lot of agents agreed that the Knicks should let him go. Also, they think his game has a short-term ceiling.
Do you think the Knicks would consider trading Shumpert any time in the near future? They've gotten rid of all our other young assets.
No. He's recovering, and he should come back as a stud offensively and defensively. He represents what the Knicks are all about -- defense, toughness and energy.
Guys, thank you for your time. If I missed your question, please hit me up on Twitter @JaredZwerling and I'll be sure to get back to you. Thank you as always for your questions and insights!
What do you think about this team maybe showing some of that "bad boys of the 90's" attitude this year on the court? I dont see Felton, Melo, JR, Amare, Camby, Thomas, or Chandler backing down...All pretty tough guys.
I agree. They not only represent the 90s teams, but Mike Woodson's defensive attitude about the game.
