Chat with Jake Trotter

Jake Trotter
  (4:01 PM)

Keep sending in your questions. We'll get rolling in a sec.

Jon Sanders - El Paso. Tx [via mobile]

How is it possible for a player from West Virginia, in pre season, be voted to be the MVP in the Big Twelve?

Jake Trotter
  (4:02 PM)

Geno Smith had a monster season, and a monster finish in the Orange Bowl. Landry didn't have a strong finish, especially statistically. Boils down to that.

Billy Joe Bob (Enid )

Who are the 2012 class members that are not on campus? When can we expect the rest of the class?

Jake Trotter
  (4:03 PM)

Bester in on campus, but hasn't been cleared yet. Gardner is finishing up classes. Latu, doesn't sound promising. Simon still has some work to do, as well. I think that's it.

Evan Williams (Alberta )

Who is the WR most likely to start along side Kenny Stills and Trey Metoyer?

Jake Trotter
  (4:04 PM)

Sterling Shepard.

Trent (Oklahoma City, Ok)

Jake, Is there any chance that any of the receivers that were suspended might rejoin the team at some point? And given that situation and the influx of newcomers at the position, how do you see the catch tally being divvied up?

Jake Trotter
  (4:05 PM)

Very possible, but I don't see any of the three catching a pass this season. Stills and Metoyer will comprise the majority of catches. After that, who knows?

Ryan (Norman)

What do you think will be the Sooners biggest weakness this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:06 PM)

I really don't see any weaknesses, but it will be interesting to see if this d-line with Frank Alexander and Ronnell Lewis can get pressure on the QB.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

What is your reaction to the "unprecedented" sanctions Mark Emmert leveled Penn State with today?

Jake Trotter
  (4:07 PM)

I felt it was warranted. And in many ways, these sanctions are worse than the death penalty. Penn State may never get off the mat from these.

ouflyer (Bentonville, AR)

Did you get any news on Metoyer and his status wearing the boot?

Jake Trotter
  (4:08 PM)

Yeah, minor foot injury. Not a big deal. They just wanted to get it taken care of before two-a-days. He should be 100 percent for practice.

Ryan (Dallas )

When talking about our DEs, Bob Stoops made no mention of Nathan Hughes or Chaz Green. What can we infer from this omission?

Jake Trotter
  (4:08 PM)

That they probably won't play a lot.

Tyler (OKC)

what was your opinion about all the mascot running around the hotel today during media day

Jake Trotter
  (4:09 PM)

I thought it was fun. The Mountaineer was the star of the show. He got all the cheerleaders to sing "Country Roads." And when Bob Stoops was coming up the escalator, the Mountaineer said, "Hey, Oklahoma. See you Nov. 17." The Mountaineer actually sat at our table for awhile during lunch, and is a really good kid.

Blaine (Norman)

Whats the reasons behind Durron Neal not doing much this summer that you said?

Jake Trotter
  (4:10 PM)

He's had some knee issues, apparently.

Mike (Stroud, Ok.)

Other than Landry Jones, what other player needs to give it their all for OU to win the BigXII and play in NC game?

Jake Trotter
  (4:12 PM)

Not sure that's the right way to word the question. What about, other than Landry, who is most critical to this team? I might say Tony Jefferson. The whole defense will revolve around what Tony does at safety.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Who will backup R.J.Washington and David King at DE?

Jake Trotter
  (4:12 PM)

Chuka Ndulue will be the third DE. After that, maybe Nelson.

Billy Joe Bob (Enid )

How are the rbs looking? What will the rotation look like? How will the carries be divided

Jake Trotter
  (4:14 PM)

Well, Dom Whaley has been cleared. Landry said today he expects Whaley to be full go on the first day of pads. Whaley should get 50 percent of the work. I think they want to get FB Trey Millard more touches, maybe 8-10 a game. I could see the rest of the backs, Clay, Finch, Damien Williams getting between 3-7 touches a game, on average.

Crabman (MD)

Is there anyone on the Penn State roster worth poaching?

Jake Trotter
  (4:15 PM)

I was actually going through their lineup this morning to see if there were any fits. I don't know enough about Penn State to answer this intelligently. But they're heavy on LBs. OU could use a LB.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

How much of an impact do you think Michigan transfer Daryl Stonum will have in Waco?

Jake Trotter
  (4:16 PM)

No idea.

tyler (ttown)

does greg bryant stay commited? alot of tweets has people worried

Jake Trotter
  (4:16 PM)

I think he sticks with OU. If he doesn't, the Sooners still have Ford, Alex Ross going forward. Sooners will be fine at RB.

Jim Slemaker (Los Angeles)

I understand Stoops was asked about the Kenny Stills in dress photo. How'd that go over in the media room?

Jake Trotter
  (4:17 PM)

About like you'd expect.

Derrin (Plano, TX)

How pivotal is landing Beau Sandland after Hunter Henry's commitment to Arkansas? The Sooners have not had a playmaker at TE since Jermaine Gresham was healthy.

Jake Trotter
  (4:18 PM)

It's important. Henry was going Arkansas all the way, so that wasn't a surprise to anyone. Sandland would help, but I like Taylor McNamara as a prospect, too.

Ronnie (Dallas )

Demontre Hurst- All Big 12 team.....T or F?

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

Quandre Diggs, Carrington Byndom, Broderick Brown, Justin Gilbert, Aaron Colvin -- this league is stacked at CB. Hurst is as good as any of those guys. But I don't know if the media recognizes it, underscored by the preseason team. So I'll go with "F."

Scott (OKC)

Any news on Gary Simon? Is he still not through the clearinghouse?

Jake Trotter
  (4:20 PM)

No news. No.

Josh (right here)

So no word on whether Gardner completed his summer corses? Is it official Latu won't be a sooner?

Jake Trotter
  (4:21 PM)

Gardner should be finishing up this week. As of today, he has not qualified though, according to Stoops. It's not official on Latu, but it doesn't sound promising.

Trent (Blanchard)

Which player from last years roster do you see making the biggest jump in production this season on both sides of the ball?

Jake Trotter
  (4:23 PM)

I could see Brennan Clay becoming a bigger factor on the offense. They trust him. He doesn't have Finch's explosion, but he's sound across the board. Defensively, RJ Washington is the one to watch. He could/should finish out as the team's sack leader.

BKB (Austin)

Biggest surprise regarding OU revealed at media day?

Jake Trotter
  (4:24 PM)

That Whitney Hand can cook. Landry spoke very glowingly of her culinary acumen.

Tony Sloan Andre (South Beach)

Damien Williams going to make a significant impact this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

Significant? I doubt it. Whaley is the No. 1 back, and should be. But Williams can make a substantive impact. Sometimes I'm wary of penciling in JUCO transfers as instant impact guys. So many times, they fizzle out. But Williams is talented, and the backfield is better with him, than without.

Brian (Alabama)

Does the Oklahoma football team "haze" the incoming freshman during fall camp?

Jake Trotter
  (4:26 PM)

Not that I know of.

Kevin (Reno, NV)

Will Gabe Lynn have any impact in Sooner uniform? Or will the former 5-star prospect only be using up a scholarship during his career in Norman?

Jake Trotter
  (4:27 PM)

Right now, I'd say Lynn is the third safety, behind two guys that might be gone in 2013. So no, Lynn's days are not done, and I think the Mike Stoops change of scenery could do wonders for him and his confidence.

Kim Kardashian (LA)

Do you think this Tony Jefferson is obessed with me? I hear he's a football plyr, I like football plyrs, even though I'm with kayne.

Jake Trotter
  (4:28 PM)

Since he tweets about you every other hour, I'd say yes.

Ryan (Dallas )

Should our LB be an area of concern? Tom Wort seems a little prone to injury, while Corey Nelson and Joe Ibiloye don't have a lot of experience, especially in this new defense.

Jake Trotter
  (4:29 PM)

Area on concern? No. But will it be the strength of the team? Probably not. Wort is injury prone, but Jaydan Bird has proven to be a reliable backup. I don't think Corey Nelson is the player he was getting hyped as two springs ago, but he can still be a very effective Big 12 LB.

Corey (NYC)

Jake: Is the Notre Dame visit to Norman this year starting to excite Sooner fans? I know Notre Dame isn't quite what they used to be, but they are still the biggest name in College Football? Your thoughts?

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

I can't speak for Sooner fans, but I'm pumped for the matchup. Anytime you play Notre Dame, it's exciting. Throw in OU's tradition with the Irish, and the fact Notre Dame hasn't been to Norman since the '60s, and I think everyone recognizes it's a premier matchup.

Derek Lamb (Oklahoma City)

any news on Jalen Saunders?

Jake Trotter
  (4:30 PM)

Nope. Stoops said today he still hasn't heard from the NCAA.

Dero (New York, NY)

I think this team is good enough to win the Big 12, however I don't think they are mature enough to win it this year. What's your take?

Jake Trotter
  (4:32 PM)

You mean win it all? To me, OU is at the top of second tier after the likes of USC, LSU, Oregon, Alabama, and capable of playing its way to the title game. OU may not be mature in some areas like WR, but they have the most experienced QB in CFB, veteran offensive and defensive lines, and guys like Tony Jefferson, Kenny Stills, Demontre Hurst, Tom Wort who are three-year starters.

M. Smith (OK)

As close as it is to football season beginning, are there many schools that would have scholarships still available to offer to the Penn St players if they wanted to transfer

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

Sure. If OU is unable to get all of its JUCOs in, it might have a spot available for a Penn State transfer.

R. Taylor (Tulsa)

Are the old rumors on Fl State possibly coming into the Big 12 dead

Jake Trotter
  (4:33 PM)

Not dead. But postponed for now.

TD (Norman)

Where do see osu finishing in the Big XII this year? Waht do you make of some people predicting they will go as high as 9-3 with a true frosh at qb?

Jake Trotter
  (4:35 PM)

I'm higher on OSU than some of my colleagues. The schedule works in their favor, with WV, TCU, Texas and Tech all having to go to Stillwater. The defense should also be the best OSU's had since maybe 1997. I would not be shocked at all if OSU went 9-3, even with a freshman QB.

Lydell Carr (Enid, OK)

Am I the greatest wishbone fullback in OU history?

Jake Trotter
  (4:36 PM)

I think so.

Clint (Texas)

What are your thoughts on the Penn state penalties plus how long do you think they wil recover from a football stand point and do you think it's worse or same as the death penalty? Any word if stoops is recruiting Penn state plyrs?

Jake Trotter
  (4:38 PM)

I thought they were justified, considering the egregious offenses committed by the PSU administration. I'm not sure they ever recover from this. To me, these sanctions are just as bad as the death penalty, and maybe worse. Stoops didn't talk about Penn State players, but I'm sure it's something they will take a look at.

John (Texas)

Who on the schedule will be the toughest obstacle? Any why would a program like OU play in El Paso?

Jake Trotter
  (4:40 PM)

West Virginia on the road. OU is going to El Paso, because its schedule got screwed up with the latest round of conference realignment. TCU went from being a non-conference game to a conference game, leaving OU with a hole to fill, and not much time to fill it.

Dave (Tulsa)

Who will be our third Linebacker after Nelson and Wort? And which of the younger linebackers do you see making an impact this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:41 PM)

Ibiloye will be the nickelback. Jaydan Bird will be Wort's backup. Frank Shannon and Aaron Williams will battle for time after that.

Tylor (Edmond)

Every season there seems to be that one road game that OU loses it's swagger and the game. Does Mike Stoops fix this? What game has the most potential for that this season?

Jake Trotter
  (4:42 PM)

Texas Tech on the road. OU always plays bad in Lubbock, and that game is the week before Texas. Plus, Tech knows it can beat the Sooners.

Beej (Norman)

How does Whaley look really? Will he be the impact player we are use to seeing?

Jake Trotter
  (4:43 PM)

We'll find out the first week of practice when he's cutting in pads, and taking hits to the ankle. But by all accounts, he looks tremendous.

DTG (Tulsa)

What may be something small that Bob Stoops said that might be more telling down the road? Don't know if I worded that right but what I mean is, did Bob say something that didn't mean much now that might mean more later?

Jake Trotter
  (4:45 PM)

The most interesting thing Stoops said today was "our defense hasn't been quite as strong as what we've been used to in our first 10, 12 years" when asked about what Mike Stoops brings to the table. An admission that the defense will be better with Mike running it?

Kris (Des Moines)

Media day is more important to A) The Fans or B) the media? Point being fans who actually follow their teams hears nothing new from coaches or players that haven't heard before, and its a good excuse for fish wraps to fill out an expense report..

Jake Trotter
  (4:46 PM)

I'm not exactly sure, but did you just take a shot at me?

Jeri (Dallas)

Were you surprised Cody Thomas didn't make the Elite 11 QB roster? What was the issue?

Jake Trotter
  (4:47 PM)

No, not surprised. I think part of Cody's issue is that he also plays baseball. Those other guys are devoting 100 percent of their time to QBing. Thomas is splitting that between football and baseball.

Steve (Texas)

I meant to ask this earlier this was when the playoff concept was revealed Mack Brown said something along the lines it's unfair to the fans there's not more marquee matchups in non conference now I'm going to assume he's talking about other programs since his doesn't schedule those outside of the home and home he did with Ohio state and please don't say he played a ucla and byu

Jake Trotter
  (4:48 PM)

No doubt, Texas' schedule has been weak in the non-conference. They've tried to improve that, adding Notre Dame, BYU. But Stoops has schedule a much tougher non-Big 12 slate than Mack over the years.

Derek (Norman)

What would be your projected Depth Chart on D as of right now?

Jake Trotter
  (4:50 PM)

The whole depth chart?? DE: King, RJ/Chuka, Nelson; DT: McFarland, Walker/McGee, Phillips; NB Ibiloye/Lynn; MLB Wort/Bird; WLB Nelson/Shannon, Franklin; CB Hurst, Colvin/Powell, Harris; S Jefferson, Harris/Lynn

Beej (Norman)

With the prevelance of social media, how does a program like OU educate their players about the risk factors that exist? Are there monitors or some sort of check and balance in place for social media?

Jake Trotter
  (4:51 PM)

Compliance monitors all social media of its athletes, which is an enormous task. What Stoops tells his players is, treat Twitter and Facebook like you would a press conference. If you wouldn't say something in a press conference, you shouldn't be tweeting it.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Will Jordan Wade or Phillips emerge for OU this season and give the Sooners a big body to clog the middle and stop the run?

Jake Trotter
  (4:51 PM)

Wade is probably still a year way. But Phillips could really help, and is a potential future star.

Michael, Long Beach, CA [via mobile]

If Gardner is cleared is he a true difference maker?

Jake Trotter
  (4:53 PM)

Yeah, I think so. As Merv Johnson pointed out a couple of weeks ago, nobody in California JUCO could cover Gardner, and there a ton of big-time athletes in California JUCO.

Kris (Des Moines)

Present company excluded. JT you are the best...

Boones (Houston)

With the lack of DE depth, what is up with Geneo Grissom moving to DE? He was receiving high praise as a true freshman before getting hurt...

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

Thanks, Kris --- it was actually Grissom's suggestion to be moved to TE. Not sure what prompted it, but he didn't want to play d-end anymore. He obviously has a ton of athletic ability, but it may be awhile before we see him make an impact at a position he has almost no experience at.

Kris (Des Moines)

You know who else split time between sports?? Sammy B. Give me the athlete that has room to grow over the lifetime QB that may have peaked as a HS Junior...

Jake Trotter
  (4:55 PM)

Exactly.

Josh (right here)

Do you see that hurting Cody in the future? OU's standards are HUGE when it comes to the QB's, and every thing else for that matter. Will he be able to keep up being a two sport QB?

Jake Trotter
  (4:56 PM)

Not necessarily. Others have succeeded at it before him. But as Archie Bradley once put it, it would take tremendous discipline and work ethic to pull it off. The last to try it, Brandon Jones, eventually had to pull the plug on baseball.

Tony (Richmond, CA)

Are you surprised Jamarkus McFarland made the preseason All Big 12 list?

Jake Trotter
  (4:56 PM)

Not a great year in the Big 12 for defensive linemen.

Michael, Long Beach, CA [via mobile]

Any rebuttal regarding Ubben's critique of your proposed trades with the Horns?

Jake Trotter
  (4:57 PM)

Ubben criticizing my trades only validated them more.

peter (buffalo, new york)

who do u think oklahoma will most likely to lose to this year?

Jake Trotter
  (4:58 PM)

Ranking OU's toughest games: 1) at West Virginia, 2) Texas, 3) at TCU, 4) at Texas Tech 5) OSU/K-State at home (toss up).

Beej (Norman)

Do you see the Bell "Dozer" package still being utilized as much this year? I know it is effective but doesn't it become predictable and counter productive to Landry's game? (in the context of not being able to finish drives)

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

I actually asked Stoops about this today. As long as it's effective, it will continue to be a significant part of the offense.

peter (buffalo, new york)

what about notre dame?

Jake Trotter
  (4:59 PM)

Was doing Big 12 only... yeah, Notre Dame would be tied for fifth there with OSU and K-State.

Jake Trotter
  (5:00 PM)

Guys, that's all the time we have for the chat today. Thanks for all the questions... we'll do it again next Monday, same time, same place. Less than two weeks to the first day of practice. Everyone have a great week.
