Chat with David Schoenfield

David Schoenfield
  (1:06 PM)

Let's play three ...

Rick (DC)

Dave, does the trade for Anibal and Infante shore up the Tigers enough to put them in the driver's seat for a deep October run?

David Schoenfield
  (1:08 PM)

It helps, but not sure it makes Detroit the AL favorite. Infante is certainly an improvement at 2B, but he has a .681 OPS since April. Sanchez has a career 5.00 ERA in 12 starts against the AL. They should help, but they don't push the Tigers over the top by themselves.

Aaron new orleans [via mobile]

Do you think turner deal for marlins like smoltz deal for braves

David Schoenfield
  (1:09 PM)

Am I projecting Turner to be a future Hall of Famer? Umm ... no. I have serious doubts about Turner's ability to develop into anything more than back-end starter.

Z (Baltimore)

What kind of moves(if any) do you think the Orioles will make this week?

David Schoenfield
  (1:10 PM)

Maybe they'll look to add a guy like Kevin Millwood, but I don't think you'll see a big move. O's just aren't that good, they're not going to catch the Yankees, so why mortgage good prospects for an unlikely playoff pursuit?

David (CT)

What do you think about the Yankees trade for Ichiro and do you see the Yankees maybe making a move for a starting pitcher, or bullpen pitcher or backup catcher or backup infielder between now and next Tuesday?

David Schoenfield
  (1:11 PM)

With Gardner out and Swisher battling an injury, they needed defensive help in the outfield. You can't run Raul Ibanez out to left field in a playoff game. Ichiro can still play solid D. We'll see if there's anything left in the bat. I think they'll add another reliever, yes.

Tarek (NYC)

We got your boy Dave, can't wait till he hit .280 with a 310 OBP for us!

David Schoenfield
  (1:11 PM)

Hey, that's unfair! He's hitting .297 with a .314 OBP on the road!

Greg (NY)

Dodgers need to solve 3B. Hanley Ramirez would look rather good in Dodger Blue. Whats going on with Hanley talks?

David Schoenfield
  (1:12 PM)

Teams are certainly asking about Hanley, Josh Johnson, Carlos Lee, Ricky Nolasco. Are the Marlins in full dump mode? We'll see ...

Marty (Fairfield, CT)

Questioning the value of a player sounds like a condemnation of a skill-set. Would you value Papelbon higher if he were used in higher leveraged situations? If you would, then it's not a question of the player's 'value', but rather a question of managerial strategy.

David Schoenfield
  (1:13 PM)

In his case, it's both. Yes, not used optimally, but he hasn't pitched well when the games have been tightest. Four appearances in tie games, he's allowed runs in all four games, for example.

Kris G (Indy)

What is the likelihood that the Twins move Liriano at the trade deadline? As a fan, I would like to see them get something for him, but I also realize there is a ton of risk due to his inconsistency.

David Schoenfield
  (1:14 PM)

I think he'll be traded, but his value took a big hit with last night's poor performance (7 runs, I believe). Some team will take a chance -- and he'd make a great lefty killer out of the pen -- but don't expect an A prospect in return.

Sean (Phoenix)

As a Mariners fan, how do you feel with Ichiro being traded for prospects? His exit seems graceful, but I'm not a Mariners fan.

David Schoenfield
  (1:16 PM)

Marginal prospects, at that. It was time to move on, so good move by the Mariners so they don't have to spend all offseason worrying about the pressures to sign him or how much to pay him and so on. It was a nice run, but not sad to see him leave.

Stephen (Blacksburg, VA)

If other teams had known that Turner and a good catching prospect were available for a decent utility player and an innings eater, how many other teams would have been in on a deal.

David Schoenfield
  (1:18 PM)

Well, I doubt the Tigers took the only offer they got. Honestly, I'm not sure how high teams are on Turner. Minor league numbers this year are pretty mediocre.

Mike Olt (Texas)

I wanna be a Ranger but i feel like im going to get dealt.. Any ideas on where that may be?

David Schoenfield
  (1:19 PM)

No idea, but I agree ... good chance you'll be in a new uniform on Aug. 1. And I believe a new team will be very happy to get you. I see All-Star appearances in your future.

Matt (LA)

Don't the Pirates have to make a move soon? Last year at this time (and also after Meals-gate), the team seemed to get apprehensive waiting for help. By the time NH pulled the trigger, the season was effectively lost. Time to move?

David Schoenfield
  (1:20 PM)

Last year's team wasn't that good. This year's team is better. Would love to see Justin Upton ... and, yes, I'd include Jameson Taillon in a trade, if Arizona wants another pitching prospect (which may not be the case). How often do you get the chance to pick up a guy like Upton?

Stephen (Blacksburg, VA)

Selling the future of Delgado for the 35 year old present of Dempster. Short-sighted or appropriately aggressive? Could they have gotten something better for Delgado?

David Schoenfield
  (1:22 PM)

Not official yet ... I think it's worth the risk. The Braves are probably the contender with the biggest gap between their bottom starters and a trade acquisition. Plus, they can still catch the Nationals, so going all-out to win the division is worth the risk of Delgado becoming more than a 3 or 4.

Mike(San Diego) [via mobile]

As a Cardinals fan, I vote against the Pirates having Justin Upton and Andrew McCutchen in the same lineup for the near future.

WyattBurp (Detroit, MI)

Cubbies. They're still trying to hawk Dempster. I think all their problems start with Soriano. Are they ignoring the source of their problems?

David Schoenfield
  (1:23 PM)

Well, they'd LIKE to deal Soriano ...

Clay (Charlotte)

9-0 come back by the Barves, best game of the season so far?

David Schoenfield
  (1:24 PM)

Hmm, good question ... what about that extra-inning game that Chipper won against the Phillies? He said that was maybe the best game he ever played in.

David Schoenfield
  (1:25 PM)

This one: Braves 15, Phillies 13 in 11 innings: http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/ATL/ATL201205020.shtml

Rick (DC)

Are the Red Sox done? For that matter, will the Yankees be the only playoff team from the AL East?

David Schoenfield
  (1:26 PM)

4 out of the wild card, so .. no. But, yes, definitely possible AL East only gets one team. Angels take one wild card, and A's/Tigers/White Sox take the other. I can definitely see that happening, especially the advantage the Tigers/White Sox will get from playing Cle, KC and Min.

Rich (Solvay, Ny)

Dave,Do you see either Shields or Lester returning to what they once were as SPs soon if ever?

David Schoenfield
  (1:29 PM)

I can't figure Lester out. The stuff looks OK, SO/BB ratio is fine, he's just lost command of his fastball and maybe his cutter isn't cut as good. Less optimistic about Shields ... 2011 looks more like a career season to me. Good pitcher, probably not a great one like he was last year.

erich (sf)

What do think of B Posey's year? I can't believe he has come back that strong. Can you?

David Schoenfield
  (1:29 PM)

Great to see, especially since you really had no idea what he could do. Looks again like one of the best players in the game.

Matt (Chickasha)

Do the Rangers get a rent-a-pitcher without giving up one of their 3 best prospects?

David Schoenfield
  (1:30 PM)

They won't trade Profar. Readers: If you're the Rangers, do you trade Olt for a rent-a-pitcher?

David T (El Paso)

Finish this sentence...The Texas Rangers acquire ___________ to help booster the rotation?

David Schoenfield
  (1:31 PM)

Does Scott Feldman count? I'll say Hamels if the Phillies don't sign him.

David Schoenfield
  (1:33 PM)

It's also possible the Rangers don't make a move. Is a playoff rotation of Darvish, Harrison, Holland and Lewis/Oswalt good enough to win? I believe so. Which is I think they either go Hamels or nobody.

Bob (San Francisco)

Any chance the Giants will get a closer?

David Schoenfield
  (1:34 PM)

Yeah, for blown saves this month for Casilla. Not sure there is a good one out there. Am I missing somebody?

WyattBurp (Detroit, MI)

More Sweatsox. Ventura is a 1st year manager. Sale, their ace, hasn't started a full season. Peavy, their #2, is healthy for the first time in 4 years: Why would anyone pick them to finish 1st?

David Schoenfield
  (1:35 PM)

Because, right now, they've scored more runs and allowed fewer than the Tigers?

Patrick (Chicago)

Broxton?

David Schoenfield
  (1:36 PM)

Ugh ... 24/14 SO/BB ratio .. hardly dominant.

Heath (Dallas)

Because of back-to-back WS defeats, the Rangers will feel the pressure to bring in a top-of-the-rotation guy, believing the lack of one is why the lost last year. Not saying it's true, but belive it will happen.

Eric (Chicago)

The Rangers need to trade for a SP - Greinke, Garza, Hamels (if not re-signed)...I'm not a Rangers fan but do enjoy watching them. I will say that if they go in the post season relying on Darvish, they are in trouble. Lewis is out for the year and Oswalt is a shell of his former self. They can't rely on Feliz, Ogando or even Martin Perez. They need something to happen in the next week or they'll have to try and out hit everyone, which is possible, but good pitching dominates good hitting in the playoffs.

David Schoenfield
  (1:38 PM)

I think my take is I'm not sure Garza and Greinke are that much of an upgrade over what they have. Now that depends on what they have to surrender in a trade. Hamels is worth Olt. Not sure Garza or Greinke (I'd label him just as unpredictable in a postseason as Darvish) are. But Hamels .. yes. He obviously becomes your No. 1.

Stephane (Philly)

Should the Phillies trade Hunter Pence? If so, what kind of package could he get? Could he get Tallion and Marte from Pittsburgh?

David Schoenfield
  (1:39 PM)

He's overrated, his fielding this year (as you probably now) has been erratic. I don't think the Pirates would give up both of those guys. Plus, not sure if the Pirates and Phillies have much of a trade history (even though they're in different divisions).

Jay (Chicago)

When Andy Dirks returns, if he can find his form before he was injured, should Delmon Young be restricted to a platoon role playing against lefties and pinch-hitting? His OPS is 150 points lower against righties and is just awful defensively.

David Schoenfield
  (1:40 PM)

Yes. Vastly overrated player.

Patrick (Chicago)

Jay (Chicago): I think a better question is: Should Delmon Young be played at all?

Tim (Cincinnati)

Hunter Pence would look good in the REDS lineup!

Gil (Los Angeles )

Tallion and Marte for a guy with a sub 800 OPS? Is that for real?

Alex (OH)

Any truth to the rumor the Reds turned down Ondrusek for Victorino? I would do that in a heartbeat if I am the Reds.

David Schoenfield
  (1:42 PM)

No idea. Maybe they want to ride out Drew Stubbs, who probably has a little more range than Victorino.

Ryan (Indy)

What are your thoughts on Tommy Hanson? I expected him to be on his way to being an elite starter by now, but he seems to be regressing. Do you think he's hurt, unlucky or were my expectations too high to begin with?

David Schoenfield
  (1:43 PM)

I had big expectations as well. Could be the various ailments have just ate away at him. I would suggest he could work a little on conditioning as well. Doesn't seem to be in great shape to me.

Ryan W (Pittsburgh)

With the extra wild card spot, more teams are in contention, but the wild card spots arent nearly as valuable since it only guarantees you a one game playoff. Does that mean teams like the pirates and rays are likely to stand pat or do little while teams with true WS aspirations (Tigers, Rangers, etc) will make the big moves at the deadline?

David Schoenfield
  (1:45 PM)

Right. There is much more incentive for a first-place team to make a deal to solidify its hold on first place. Basically, a wild card is less than half as valuable as a year ago. Not only the play-in game, but you may have to burn your best pitcher in that game. WC contenders have to really weigh how much you want to give up for a rental.

Dwane (ky)

what do the cards need to get besides pitching?

David Schoenfield
  (1:46 PM)

More pitching? Their lineup is fine. Surprised we're not hearing more about them in trade rumors. They have major league depth and farm system guys to deal from.

Frails (Scottsdale)

Why do I keep hearing Hanley to the Red Sox? He can't pitch!!

Elliott (Chicago)

The Cubs threw out an OF of Shawon Dunston Jr., Trevor Gretzky and Alberto Almora in a rookie league game...go Cubs go!

Jason (St Louis)

Do you think Ichiro will go back to Japan next year?

David Schoenfield
  (1:47 PM)

I think he wants 3,000 hits. I think somebody would sign him -- good defender, maybe he'll hit better away from Death Valley Safeco. Giants?

Jay (Chicago)

Where do you rank Sanchez among the rest of the Tigers' rotation?

David Schoenfield
  (1:48 PM)

Depending on good Scherzer or bad Scherzer, I guess for a playoff series I'd go Verlander, Fister, Scherzer, Sanchez.

Latos-Intolerant (Boston)

Standard 5 x 5 league, please rank for ROS - CJ Wilson, Cueto, Shields, Lincecum, Gallardo

David Schoenfield
  (1:49 PM)

Nice name! I'm not a fantasy guy, but I guess I'd go Wilson, Cueto, Gallardo, Shields, Lincecum.

Paul (Massachusetts)

Trade J. Johnson for J. Lester straight up? Who wins?

David Schoenfield
  (1:50 PM)

Lester signed through 2014 (team option), makes a little less. Hmm ... that's a good one. I guess if I'm Boston I'd make that trade.

c (orlando)

anyone else agreeing that rays should have gotten alonso for shields when they could have this winter?

David Schoenfield
  (1:51 PM)

What? Alonso has four home runs.

Mike (Tacoma)

Was there a hidden reason Farquhar was included in the Ichiro trade? He's been picked up on waivers twice this year by teams picking after the Mariners passed on him. Why the window-dressing for a guy the Mariners passed on when he was a free selection?

David Schoenfield
  (1:52 PM)

I don't think so. Just an arm to appear like you got something for Ichiro.

Mike (Reno)

I don't think they have the prospects, but what about potentially Hanley to the Giants? They could move Panda to first and have Ramirez play third. It's not like he's lighting the world on fire, but his numbers sure are better than anyone else they can run out there now (Belt, Arias, Huff, etc...)

Patrick (Chicago)

Do you have to burn your best pitcher in the WC game? Let's just assume that using your best pitcher gives you a roughly 50% chance of winning that game, but then lowers your chance of winning the next series to 35%. Thus, you would have a 17.5% chance of making it to the LCS. And after the LCS, let's assume the choice does not affect percentages. On the flip side, let's say that using a lesser pitcher lowers your cahnce of winning the wild card game to 40%, but leaves your chance at winning the next series at roughly 50%, giving you a 20% chance of reaching the LCS. It would seem the goal isn't just to advance one round, but to put the highest probability on winning the WS, no?

David Schoenfield
  (1:54 PM)

I don't actually disagree with your suggestion. But I guarantee that NO manager would skip his "ace" (if he has a clear one) in a one-game situation. Say the Tigers win the wild card. Imagine if Jim Leyland started Doug Fister ...

Jason (St Louis)

I laughed out loud at Johnson for Lester. I wouldn't trade Kyle Lohse for Lester.

Mitch (NJ)

***NEWS ALERT*** The Mets just signed relief pitchers Neil Allen, Jesse Orosco and Turk Wendell to contracts. To be inserted onto major league roster immediately.

Jared (Las Vegas)

Where does Wandy fit? Will he get traded?

David Schoenfield
  (1:55 PM)

I think his ERA is over 5.00 over his past 10 starts or so. Not sure he goes anywhere.

Chris (Nashville)

What kind of return can us Royals fans expect from Broxton and Frenchy or some of our other MLB players?

David Schoenfield
  (1:56 PM)

Frenchy is horrible. Broxton's ERA is nice but underlying numbers not THAT impressive. Not much in return for either guy.

John (Toronto)

Do you think positioning is part of a fielder's skill? Or coach's decision

David Schoenfield
  (1:58 PM)

Both. Ripken used to talk about reading the catcher's signs and location to anticipate where the ball would be hit. I'm sure some infielders are better at that than others. Some outfielders will study hit charts more than others and shade a little bit, even without a coach's direction.

Bill (Baltimore)

I'm aware the Orioles record doesn't represent as bad as they've played, but wouldn't it help their perception (both to fans and prospective free agents) if they can finish over .500 and make a push for the wild card? I'm not saying give up Bundy or Machado, but there's a lot of opportunity to bring someone in that would improve the team (definitely not Millwood btw).

David Schoenfield
  (2:00 PM)

But if not a low-cost guy like Millwood (who would be an improvement over what the O's have), who? I wouldn't trade Schoop, for example, but if you want to acquire somebody who can actually, he would be next in line after Bundy/Machado.

TiM (Pittsburgh)

It seems the past couple months, scouts have been down on Starling Marte. I mean his AAA stats are a little lower than his previous years in the minors, but he's been the same player (high K's) good average, plus defense. Am I missing something on why teams wouldn't want him?

David Schoenfield
  (2:01 PM)

I think mostly concerns about his OBP ability since he's not a big power guy.

David Schoenfield
  (2:02 PM)

D-backs president has apparently just said Upton won't be traded.

Stephane (Philly)

Completely insane hypothetical, no way it would ever happen, BUT: Hamels, Howard, and Dom Brown to Baltimore for Machado and Bundy. Assuming Hamels re-signs in Baltimore, who says no?

David Schoenfield
  (2:03 PM)

So you just proposed an insane hypothetical that will never happen but want an answer anyway? Answer is easy: Orioles say no. Nobody wants Ryan Howard's contract.

Ben (Charlotte)

how big is the swapping of compensation picks in the Marlins/Tigers deal? seems to be overlooked, but in most other sports moving from the late second to late first round is significant ...

David Schoenfield
  (2:04 PM)

Minor. By the of the first round, you're getting into "very low percentage this guy ever develops into a major league regular" territory.

Ike (PA)

You'd be able to trade Jason Bay for: a) bag of balls, b) couple of fungoes, c) yesterday's hot dogs, d) punch in the face?

David Schoenfield
  (2:04 PM)

(e) none of the above

Bob (Pittsburgh)

What in your opinion what be the best trade for the Pittsburgh Pirates comes time for the deadline?

David Schoenfield
  (2:07 PM)

How about a shortstop? Stephen Drew? Maybe Carlos Lee from the Marlins since he wouldn't cost much?

Mike (Tacoma)

At least we didn't bring Jon Lester home as a pretend compensation for Ichiro.

David Schoenfield
  (2:07 PM)

Wow, people are down on Lester ... I think he'll get straigtened out. I mean, it may be in 2013, but ...

Cody (Cleveland)

Do you think the Indians will be buyers or sellers at the deadline?

David Schoenfield
  (2:08 PM)

Not sure they have anything worth selling or the goods to buy.

Patrick (Chicago)

Aren't the D-Backs killing any chance they have to sign Upton when he becomes a free agent by playing this silly, "he hasn't lived up to expectations, let's trade him" game??

David Schoenfield
  (2:08 PM)

At this point, seems like they'll have to trade him in the offseason. Just a weird cloud to have hovering over your "franchise" player.

Rick (DC)

Dave, as for Leyland starting Fister in a one-game WC game, we Tiger fans still remember in anger when JL did not start Kenny Rogers in Game 5 of the 2006 WS!!!

David Schoenfield
  (2:10 PM)

Well, that was a different scenario, no? You still had to win three games and Rogers would only start once anyway. I can see the thinking: Get to Game 6 and worry then.

Nick (MI)

Will we be seeing Victor Martinez play this season?

David Schoenfield
  (2:11 PM)

Last I read there is some small chance he could come back in September.

Tarek (NYC)

If Trout if your favorite player to watch right now, who would be #2?My Answer would me Mccutchen.

David Schoenfield
  (2:13 PM)

Hard to disagree with that. I'm a big Joey Votto fan. Ryan Braun. Mark Trumbo is fun because you never know when he'll hit one 450 feet. Cano. Miguel Cabrera. Buster Posey. Chone Figgins.

Matt (Boise)

On a chat last week with Karabell he said he would take Phillips over Kipnis. You agree?

David Schoenfield
  (2:14 PM)

Right now? Seems pretty even. Kipnis has slowed of late it seems, so maybe slight edge to Phillips.

Mitch (NJ)

Wouldn't Dan Murphy to the Pirates for a minor league bat and arm make some sense? Mets want Valdespin to get some playing time anyway.

David Schoenfield
  (2:15 PM)

Sure, that's reasonable. Play Murphy at first base. No power, but Pirates could use somebody who can get on base.

Jim (Massachusetts)

In an A.L. only deep league. I have the first waiver pick. Should I spend it on Anibal Sanchez or gamble that Hamels or Greinke might come to the A.L.?

David Schoenfield
  (2:15 PM)

Ha ... I'd gamble. I don't think Sanchez is going to tear up the AL.

John (Pittsburgh)

Do you think the Pirates could make a move for Hanley Ramirez, or a corner outfielder like Willingham or Victorino? Which one of those deals do you think would be most likely?

David Schoenfield
  (2:16 PM)

Victorino

Drew (Las Vegas)

what do the mariners need to be contenders again? and is there farm system as good as people say?

David Schoenfield
  (2:17 PM)

Do I have room for 2,000 words? They need a first baseman, a couple outfielders, 3 or 4 starting pitchers ...

Steve (Garden City, LI)

Jason Bay for Jon Lester: who regurgitates first?

David Schoenfield
  (2:18 PM)

C'mon, people ... Jon Lester is nowhere near as bad as Jason Bay.

Jon (Bozeman, MT)

Let's assume that Hamels gets traded to Rangers and Dempster to Dodgers. Will Garza, Greinke, and Shields get traded and, if so, where?

David Schoenfield
  (2:19 PM)

Garza -- Braves. Greinke -- Angels. Shields -- stays put.

Tarek (NYC)

Now Jason Bay for Frenchy is a fair trade.

Emil (Kingston PA)

Dave, do you really think the Pirates will finish above 3rd? When it's all said and done I say the Reds and Cardinals sit on top of them.

David Schoenfield
  (2:20 PM)

If I had to predict, yes, I'd say the Pirates finish third. Cardinals probably have the most TALENT in the league. Not saying it will come together, but seems like they have a run in them at some point.

Tim (OC)

You see the Angels making a big move? I hear them kicking tires on all the available SP's out there.

David Schoenfield
  (2:21 PM)

With the way Ervin Santana has been pitching, I wouldn't be surprised. Haren looked OK in his start the other night, but you have to be concerned about his back.

john (san diego)

Is timmy back?

David Schoenfield
  (2:22 PM)

Not betting just yet. Two good starts, one of those against the Astros. Let's wait ...

Jorge (Fort Worth)

Hamels for Olt and Scheppers, who says no first?

David Schoenfield
  (2:22 PM)

Not sure either team does.

Matt (Boise)

How long will it take the Phils to come back to being a power in the NL? With so much salary tied up to Howard/Papelbon/Halladay/Lee they can't spend there way out and Law doesn't seem to high on thier farm system...

David Schoenfield
  (2:24 PM)

Why couldn't they contend next year? They could still replace the Hamels/Victorino salaries. You'd still have Halladay and Lee. Even without Utley and Howard most of the year they're seventh in the NL in runs.

Josh (NJ)

Ichiro to the Yankees, Infante to the Tigers...If the Phillies are sellers, didn't they just miss opportunities to dump Victorino and Polly?

David Schoenfield
  (2:26 PM)

Well, Ichiro didn't cost the Yankees anything. Phillies presumably will get a decent prospect if they trade Victorino.

Marty (Fairfield, CT)

Wild prediction of the day: Mets release Bay. Pirates sign him. He hits .280 with a .340 obp.

Davis (Central PA)

Dave, this may be crazy, but would the Rangers ever consider trading Andrus with Profar waiting in the wings? Pirates could certainly use an upgrade at SS

David Schoenfield
  (2:27 PM)

Not this year. I don't think you'd risk playing a 19-year-old SS on a World Series contending team.

Chris (Ann Arbor)

Why don't the Pirates just call up Marte and play him--see if he adds anything?

David Schoenfield
  (2:28 PM)

At this point, you do start to wonder.

Jason (St Louis)

If Hamels is worth that would Grienke also fetch Olt and Scheppers? If so the Brewers should be jumping on that deal first.

David Schoenfield
  (2:29 PM)

I believe Hamels is worth more than Greinke. Fair or not, there are going to be questions about Greinke's makeup.

Jeremiah (Washington)

Come on, Matt from Boise has gone twice now. What do the Giants do at the deadline to help pull away from the Dodgers?

David Schoenfield
  (2:31 PM)

Not sure the Giants will do much. They'll look to add a bullpen arm, especially in light of Casilla's struggles, but I think their lineup is set. Really, they just need Lincecum to improve.

Chris (KC)

How is Frenchy for Bay fair? Bay is owed about $20 million through 2013, plus there's a vesting option and $3 million buyout. Frenchy only owed about $9 million.

Paul (reference desk at the library)

Any thoughts on McAllister of Cleveland? For real?

David Schoenfield
  (2:33 PM)

I believe he's legit. Throws strikes. Decent stuff. Heck, probably Cleveland's best starter right now.

Eric (Harrisonburg, VA)

I would think that the Rangers would at least have to seriously pursue J. Upton for Andrus and a pitcher (Perez?,) and perhaps a solid third piece. Yes, Profar is young, but how many time can you get an Upton, and still free up the logjam at SS?

David Schoenfield
  (2:33 PM)

Yes, I can that discussion taking place in the offseason. D-backs just said Upton is staying put rest of the season.

MW (GB, WI)

Is Ryan Braun's career destined to go just like Robin Yount's career? Both were young phenoms who turned it on in their mid-late 20's, got to the playoffs a few times (and lost to the Cardinals in one of those playoffs) and then (gulp) spent the next 10 years as the star of a mediocre team that slowly sank into irrelevancy. Yes, I'm bitter.

Tarek (NYC)

Chris (KC) I meant talent wise but you are Correct. Frenchy is way more contract friendly.

David (Cincinnati)

Ok, I give up....changing names doesn't work on you haha. I'll get a response if I act like a Pirates fan though.....what should the Bucs do at the deadline-GO REDS!

David Schoenfield
  (2:36 PM)

A lot of questions today! Sorry, can't get to all of them. Reds ... I'm not sure. They're kind of like the Giants in that they're pretty set if far from perfect (Stubbs). They could use a left-handed bat for the outfield and to balance out the lineup, but is one out there?

Jonah (Altoona)

What are the best leadoff options available in a trade scenario? I think Pirates leadoff men have 3rd worst OBP in the majors

David Schoenfield
  (2:37 PM)

That's the problem. Not many bats out there. Even Victorino has just a .316 OBP this year.

Sean (Portsmouth, NH)

Forget short-term acquisitions. What do the Red Sox need to do long-term to right the ship? And getting healthy is not enough of an answer because last year we saw a healthy Crawford, Lackey, Dice-K.

David Schoenfield
  (2:39 PM)

Biggest offseason issue will be trying to figure out what they have in Beckett/Lester/Buchholz/Doubront and whether that rotation is good enough.

kc (oakland)

Billy Beane gonna make a move? What kind of package would it take to get a Rollins/Hanley?

David Schoenfield
  (2:39 PM)

A's are always going to hamstrung by money. Don't expect a big move.

Matt (Boston)

If the Red Sox do decide to sell, what could they get back for a guy like Cody Ross?

David Schoenfield
  (2:41 PM)

Red Sox are only 4 out of the wild card. Don't see them selling.

JR (SF)

Giants interest in Pence, Hanley, or Victorino... real or speculative?

David Schoenfield
  (2:42 PM)

Maybe Victorino. Don't think Pence fits in their "good OF defense" plan. Hanley would be the most expensive. Not sure they have the prospects to swing that one, unless Marlins like Gary Brown.

Stephane (Philly)

I could see the A's making a move for Victorino since they have a quality farm system and he's only a rental.

Sean (Portsmouth, NH)

We may not know day-to-day what the Sox have in Beckett/Lester/Buchholz/Doubront, but I think we know what it averages to across a full season, and it's not enough. How do the Sox start over?

David Schoenfield
  (2:47 PM)

Well, the Sox don't "start over" do they? Most of their players aren't tradeable due to contract size. Are you that worried about money that you let Ortiz walk after the season? No, and that just opens a big hole at DH. Trade Ellsbury? Maybe, but with his health history, what does he bring? Not a No. 1. The Sox are pretty much who they are, no? Gonzalez, Pedroia, Crawford, Ortiz, Ellsbury, Salty, Middlebrooks ... they'll all be back next year.

Lookmaan (San Francisco)

Thoughts on Brandon Belt? Does he look like a AAAA player, or just a temporary struggle period?

David Schoenfield
  (2:48 PM)

Still only has 400 MLB at-bats. Tough park to hit in. Power a disappointment, but not ready to call him a 4-A player yet.

Ian (OK)

Span's a pretty good leadoff hitter, on pace for a 4.5-5.0 WAR season (after putting up a 2.5 WAR season in 70 games last year). He seems a good fit for Cincy or Pitt.

David Schoenfield
  (2:49 PM)

Ah, yes, forgot about Span. Having a much better season than Victorino. Good defender as well.

Adam (Indianapolis)

Chances the Reds pursue Choo from the Indians? If not Choo, how likely is there for a Victorino trade?

David Schoenfield
  (2:51 PM)

Haven't heard Choo's name being out there. Very underrated player. He'd be expensive.

Aaron (Tampa) [via mobile]

Does the Tigers trade for Sanchez give them the best 1-5 rotation in the American league? If not how would you rank the top 5 rotations in the American league?

David Schoenfield
  (2:54 PM)

Top 5 in ERA right now: A's, Rays, Yankees, Angels, Rangers. Factoring in parks, I'd argue the Yankees and Rangers have the best rotations. Put the Texas pitchers in Oakland and they'd have a better ERA than the A's rotation. Anyway, Tigers are seventh and, no, don't think Sanchez puts them in the top five. Although if you factor in Detroit's lousy defense ... maybe.

David Schoenfield
  (2:54 PM)

Basically, too close too call with all those with a more rigorous look.

jim (Woburn)

From bowden on twitter, "Marlins knee deep in trade discussions could make another blockbuster in next 24 hours". any comments, speculations?

David Schoenfield
  (2:55 PM)

I think more likely Josh Johnson gets traded than Hanley.

Alex (OH)

Is Anibal Sanchez all of a sudden Justin Verlander 2.0? Geez Tigers fans are ridiculous.

David Schoenfield
  (2:55 PM)

I'll repeat: Career 5.00 ERA against AL. Has spent his career in good pitching parks. I'm skeptical.

JJ (Eburg)

Could you see the Giants giving up Crawford and Belt to get Hanley's bat at SS?

David Schoenfield
  (2:57 PM)

Why would they Marlins make that trade? They already have a shortstop and Belt hasn't proven anything. Plus ... they really need to move Morrison to first base, not acquire another first baseman.

Travis (Pittsburgh)

Rumor in Cleveland is that they are willing to move both Perez and Choo. Would love to see Choo to the Pirates. I think that would give Pittsburgh the best outfield in baseball..

David Schoenfield
  (2:58 PM)

I love Choo. Gets on base, solid right fielder, has some pop. Again, he wouldn't be cheap.

David Schoenfield
  (2:58 PM)

OK, a few more ...

Todd (Boston)

should Boston attempt to trade for king felix?

David Schoenfield
  (3:01 PM)

I guess that's what I'm getting at -- they don't have a CC, Verlander or Weaver. But ... umm, what are you talking about to get King Felix? Middlebrooks, Bogarts, Doubront and ???

Rob (Washington, DC)

Do you think the A's will trade away new found Ace Dan Straily for some 3B help?

David Schoenfield
  (3:01 PM)

Hanley!

David (Corona)

Did the Angels get the best reliever available this year in Frieri?

David Schoenfield
  (3:02 PM)

Probably. Those walks a little scary though ...

Disgruntled reader (East Texas) [via mobile]

What do u have to do to get a question answered around here???? King Felix trade possibilities? Are the rangers a possible destination? Olt, perez, and buckel for felix hernandez???

David Schoenfield
  (3:03 PM)

Can't trade Felix in the division! Throw in Profar though ...

Tarek (NYC)

Aren't you looking forward to Ichrio winning WS MVP for the Yanks? :)

Chris (KC)

What is Boston going to trade for Felix? No premium prospects. M's aren't going to take a poopoo platter.

Steve (CA)

What do you see the Giants doing? There was a rummer they have interest in Chris Perez, any truth to that? What about a hitter or two?

David Schoenfield
  (3:04 PM)

If Cleveland sells, yes, Perez makes sense. Casilla with four blown saves this month.

Aaron (Tampa) [via mobile]

Having Verlander better than any other teams ace is a good start with a hat tip to David Price and Jared Weaver, but with Fister finally healthy and Scherzer and Porcello both pitching much better than their era suggests per xfip. I think they can match up with any team in the playoffs.

Berto (NYC)

With Ion Desmond Injured Should Nationals Look At Hanley?

David Schoenfield
  (3:05 PM)

Espinosa can handle SS (played there in minors). Again, another intra-division trade. Unlikely.

JEFF R. (BRONX!)

THE YANKEES SHOULDN'T HAVE GOT ICHIRO THEY SHOULD JUST HAVE TRADED GARY SANCHEZ AND BANUELOS FOR MIKE TROUT. EVER SINCE GEORGE DIED (RIP) THIS TEAM IS IN THE CRAPPER!!!

David Schoenfield
  (3:07 PM)

And there we go! A fitting conclusion to our two-hour chat. Thanks, everyone ... one more week of insane trade rumors and crazy made-up deals!
