Chat with Paul Kuharsky

Paul Kuharsky
  (11:58 AM)

Greetings people. I appreciate you stopping by and hope we can entertain and inform. It's the goal anyway. Then, lunch!

JayKay (Houston)

What are the chances MJD misses actual games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:01 PM)

Very small. One missed game would cost him nearly $262,000.

Kenny Britt (Chllin w/ a Fattie)

PK my man, what is wrong with me? If my body isn?t broken then my head is. Always one or the other ya know! Will I ever learn? Am I capable of learning? Can I ever be a 100% contributor to the Titans? Help me PK, you?re my only hope!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:02 PM)

If I am your only hope, you're in worse shape than we all fear.

Justin (Nashville)

Many people believe Titans will lean Towards Hasselbeck because of tough start to year. However all 4 teams New England, San Diego, Detriot and Houston had top offenses and not top defense (besides Houston). If Locker is most explosive seems to me he would give them best chance to beat these offenses not a steady veteran. Your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:04 PM)

Pats will do funky stuff and be complicated on defense. SD is 3-4 that gives Titans trouble. Detroit has a defensive coach who knows Titans and has some serious rushers and Houston swarms. Still, if Locker is ready, they shouldn't let the opposition dictate their decision.

Kid Cody (Sacramento,CA)

Do the Colts have a power back on the team to take pressure off Andrew Luck?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:05 PM)

They have three backs out of which they hope they can either find a lead guy or form a committee -- Donald Brown, Delone Carter and Vick Ballard.

Shane (in the kitchen)

Is Taylor Thompson purely a developmental guy or do you see him having the ability to make it on the field this season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:06 PM)

He'll be on the field this season, at least in a narrow role.

Kevin (Jax)

What is the schedule for the first day teams report to camp, I assume the first day is not on field work, but what does day 1 consist of?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:07 PM)

Typically players report the day before practices start. They usually have a meal and a meeting or meetings.

Kevin (Jax)

What veteran RB's are still out there in FA? Benson, Addai? Any solid ones you know of? I say the Jags bring in one to workout with the team and send thier own message to MJD!

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:08 PM)

Why can't people just allow for the idea that Rashad Jennings, who was hurt last year, is a capable fill-in? Why would those guys sign, knowing that when MJD re-emerges, their opportunity disappears?

Shane (Houston)

John McClain thinks Joe Flacco is better than Matt Schaub because he has won in the playoffs, do you agree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:09 PM)

No. I think Flacco can be better. But I think he's generally overrated.

MJD (Outer Space)

Why aren't the Jags restructuring my contract? Hech, I lead the league in rushing last year and my last deal I signed I didn't get what I deserved.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:10 PM)

Why did you sign it, then? A $9 million bonus and $17 million guaranteed ain't bad, Chief.

Alex M. (Nashville TN)

If Akeem Ayers can be a consistent threat rushing the passer, along with improvement from Derrick Morgan, is that enough to make the pass rush effective, or will we need to bring exotic blitzes to force pressure?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:12 PM)

More effective. Effective enough in every matchup? Hard to say yes. I don't envision exotic blitzing. I envision some Sundays with insufficient rush.

Bunny (IN)

At training camp do you mix with the fans or do you stick more to the media areas?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:13 PM)

Wherever I get the best vantage point is where I go. At Colts, that might be with the fans. But I'm just on the other side of a fence or rope. I chat with fans if they say hi.

Mike Thomas (Jags camp)

Man PK, last year I thought I was in-line for 1000 yards easy considering. Turns out I'm not as good as I thought. What's my future look like now that the Jags have 2 new weapons and dislike my work ethic?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:14 PM)

Your work ethic will improve, and as the No. 3 you should be better. It's the right role for you. Don't look at is as a demotion. Look at it as the ideal opportunity.

Kris (Lubbock)

If MJD holds out all season, do the Jags win more than 4 games?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:15 PM)

The Jaguars won a whopping five games WITH him last year.

CaliColtsFan (Los Angeles, CA)

Hey PK, with the Colts having so much cap space next off season and if Luck stays healthy, do u think it's a strong possibility that the Colts could be back on top of the AFC South by Luck's 3rd season?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:16 PM)

Realistic chance. But he has to progress, Chuck Pagano and Ryan Grigson have to prove to be the right choices, and they have to spend that money on the right guys.

Hampton (Jax)

Maurice is going to turn off a lot of fans if he decides to waste $900,000 to not show up to training camp.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

The fines sound like a big deal. Inevitably, they get washed away once a team and a guy come to some sort of understanding.

Justin (Nashville)

How much do you think Kenny Britt actually contributes to the Titans this year with health and possible suspension?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:17 PM)

I'd guess he plays 12 games and has some biggies.

Jersey Jones (Ewr)

Afternoon PK. Titans first offensive snap of the season, 3wr singleback set or standard 2back set? Can't wait for the season to start.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:18 PM)

I'd love three-wide, I'd guess two-tight.

Michael (Tallahassee)

If Jones Drew is traded, what kind of compensation can we get for him? Are RB even that valuable to a team anymore?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

Who's in the market for a productive but disgruntled and pricey back?

Jason (Indianapolis)

Do you think Andrew Luck can be productive with the patchwork O-line?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:19 PM)

I do. I also think he'll have a good clock in his head about getting the ball out.

Professor (J-School)

Some reporters were given exclusive access to Saints bounty evidence which didn't seem as "compelling" as they described it. Have you ever felt pressured to report a certain way in exchange for access and do you feel this is common in sports journalism?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:21 PM)

I never worry about how or what I report having a bearing on access. And I can't remember ever losing access long-term as a result of something I reported. Maybe a GM stopped answering calls for a time or something like that.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Based on your experience, does the player have more leverage when asking for a contract negotiation if he is disgruntled and in camp as opposed to disgruntled and absent?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

He's got no real leverage here either way, but can convince himself that his absence is his one chip.

Paul (Indy)

Jerry Hughes has been a bust so far for the Colts. What are his chances to turn this around with the defensive scheme switch to a 3-4?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:22 PM)

He's got a fresh start now. Seems suited to be an OLB in this scheme. We'll soon see.

Midge (Indy)

Will you have a chance to sit down with Grigson while you're here? Or have you already interviewed him?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:23 PM)

I had a long phone chat with him for a column during the offseason. Certainly hope to get some time with him at camp.

Kurtis, TX [via mobile]

Are the Texans the 2nd best team in AFC?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:24 PM)

I don't think so. If right side of the line and receiver depth proves solid, than maybe.

Stu (VA)

I do not want the Titans to trade Britt by any means, he's a stud. Hypothetically, what would his value be? A late first from a top tier team, or am I crazy to think he's that valuable right now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:25 PM)

He's facing a suspension and he's not healthy. I don't see teams looking to trade for that. It would be another thing if you were trading for a healthy Britt you knew would be on the field Day One.

Brett (Shreveport)

I don't think it will matter a whole lot one way or the other if MJD shows for JAX, if the passing game doesn't pick up, they won't win anymore games than last year no matter how productive MJD is and I can't see him being any better than he was last year

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:26 PM)

Which is why they need to reach a deal with Justin Blackmon and get him in.

Midge (Indy)

So will you be following the Olympics? What's your favorite Olympic event?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:27 PM)

Won't watch as much because I'll be on camp tour. Hope to follow U.S. women soccer closely. Good start yesterday, but defense is a little scary. Like water polo.

Nick Gerz (Jacksonville)

Who else is ahead of Houston (besides NE), and don't tell me Baltimore.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

No,. I don't like the Ravens. Steelers. Broncos possibly.

Kyle (Indy)

Who is the best safety in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:28 PM)

Antoine Bethea.

Justin (Nashville)

Do you think Kendall Wright has more receiving yards than Kenny Britt this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

I do not. Traditionally, young WRs don't come in and light it up -- though I know A.J. Green and Julio Jones were good last year. I think people are getting a little carried away with Wright expectations.

Trip (Jagsonville, FL)

Thoughts on Khan putting in his 2 cents about MJD with the media?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:31 PM)

As I wrote, I have no issue with anything he said.

Fred (Jax)

Saw you liked Wilco on your twitter feed you shamelessly self promoted last week. Favorite song?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:32 PM)

I prefer Son Volt, but I really prefer Uncle Tupelo before they split. They should have held that together. Wilco: I like "You Never Know."

Awayne (Indy)

Other than injuries what is the biggest thing that may hold the Texans out of the SB picture?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

Right side of OL.

Midge (Indy)

are we too optimistic that Donny Avery will be impactful WR this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:33 PM)

Yes. In Tennessee last year, when there could have been opportunity, he did nothing.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Mascot expose! That is what we need from your camp tour.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:34 PM)

I know they will join your campaign. At least in Jacksonville and Nashville.

Kyle (Indy)

Since the Colts will be running a lot of two tight end sets with their two new rookies, can Austin Collie be effective away from the slot?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

I think he'll be part of the mix out there. But they'll use three wide too, just not as the default like for so long.

Andrew Luck (Indy)

Will I have more touchdowns or interceptions in my rookie year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:36 PM)

Probably close, but I'd guess more TDs.

Nate (Indy)

Do you think the colts are trying to build a tight end oriented offense after seeing new england's success?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:37 PM)

I think they saw very good TEs available when they were on the clock and that Bruce Arians likes to use two. I don't think they wound up here because they saw the Pats do it and wanted to mirror.

Jack (Houston)

Any chance Aaron Berry lands in the AFC South?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

I'd say no.

Brian F. (Jacksonville, FL)

Half-way through...chat grade?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

C-plus?

Jason Sliek-Gay (Stevens Point, WI)

Did you see the Dark Knight Rises yet?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:38 PM)

Maybe tomorrow? Maybe I wait.

Unknown (Unknow)

I have a hidden tape of you "Jaguaring". Do you feel emabarrassed?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:39 PM)

No such tape exists. That may have been the dumbest thing ever. What an embarrassment.

Bobby (Houston)

This year the off-season loss that is going to doom the Texans is the right side of the line, last year it was the FB. I'm betting that the Texans coaching staff knows what they are doing and they wouldn't have let those guys go if they thought there was even a chance it would doom their season.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:40 PM)

You make it sound like they could have afforded to keep Winston and Brisiel if they had so desired.

Coby Fleener (Indy)

Hey man. Seems like you have low expecations for Wright as a rookie WR, but I see myself as having Top 10 if not top 7 TE numbers. Care to argue with me?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

I think you will be very productive. I think you have a different deal coming in than Wright. You're a tight end. And you've played a lot with Luck.

Corey (Fantasy Land)

Colby Fleener a sleeper TE fantsy wise?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

I don't see him as a sleeper. I see him as a guy to draft.

Luke (Indy)

Do the Colts have a cornerback outside Jerraud Powers that can actually cover?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

We have no real idea.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, do you think the Jaguars will be patient with Mike Mularkey as he coaches the Jaguars?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:41 PM)

Absolutely.

Blaine Gabbert (Jville)

Over or under 22.5 TD passses for me this year? Over or under 14.5 INTs?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:42 PM)

Under and under.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

Texans are clearly #2 in AFC as of now, and could even make argument they are #1. Pats are favorites bc of their schedule, they are returning AFC champs and have Brady Bellichick, & that offense that can do heavy damage. But how many teams with winning records did they beat last year? Just 1 - Baltimore in the divisional round, who were a Lee Evans dropped catch away to win

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:44 PM)

I can't understand how it's become a casually stated fact that Lee Evans dropped that pass. It was stripped on a good defensive play.If you keep talking, I am sure you can find a rationale to take everything good about the Patriots away in order to say Houston is better. You can't take away Brady and Belichick or the schedule or any of it.

Jason Sliek-Gay (Stevens Point, WI)

Of the top 10 teams in the NFL I say 8 are in the NFC and only 2 in the AFC (NE and Pit). GB, NYG, Philly, Chi, Det, NO, SF, and ATL are all better than the #3 AFC team (Houston or Denver). Do you agree?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

No. HOU and or DEN can go ahead of ATL, PHI or CHI.

Antonio F. (Pendleton, IN)

With the Colts change to a 3-4, if Freeney struggles, do you see anyone on the roster who can step up and fill the role or challenge at all?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:46 PM)

You want someone to challenge Freeney for playing time?

Zach (Tallahassee)

You want to come to the Jags/Bears game with me PK? We can piss of Bear fans and tell them how much better our division is. Ill get the tickets, you get the beer

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

I work when games are being played., But thanks.

Shane (Indy)

When you come check out the Colts for camp, check out Rick's Cafe Boatyard. I mean, it was where Peyton and Irsay etched out his last contract..

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

It's not in Anderson, is it?

Lee (Jackson, TN)

With Britt on the PUP and DWI troubles, do you see the Titans going for another WR? Without Britt they have a rookie and a guy that is one good hit away from retiring. What are your thoughts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:47 PM)

It's not like good receivers are sitting out there waiting for a call. They are on teams.

Fred (Jax)

What do you think it would take for Jacksonville to become a national brand. Not necessarily Patriots or Packers level, but at least getting some decent news coverage.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Winning.

Al (Wausau, WI)

Paul, how many of the AFC South teams do you think will beat the Minnesota Vikings in 2012?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Probably three.

james (tampa)

when will Indy sign Fleener and Allen?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:48 PM)

Yesterday.

Pagano (Indy)

A long shot but am i coach of the year if we go 8-8 or better?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:49 PM)

Probably not. Because someone else will unexpectedly get his team to the playoffs.

Chris (Upper Carolina)

Please let Kurt in Houston know that Lee Evans didn't "drop" the catch, but the CB made a fantastic play.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:50 PM)

I said that. I absolutely hate that everyone has come to call it a drop.

Jack (Houston)

Last year, SF and CIN came out of nowhere to make the playoffs. Seems to happen every year. Who do you think might come out of left field to do it this year?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

Chiefs, Bills, Bears, Eagles could do it.

Brian (Cville)

Thoughts on Kalil's super bowl prediciton? I mean I know he can't say they won't win it....but since when did the Panthers get so good?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:51 PM)

Never surprised when a guy talks very confidently about himself or his team.

Corey (Fantasy Land)

Are the Texans going to stick to the same game plan of limiting the amount of throw for Shaub? He was averaging almost 20 a game

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:52 PM)

They'll throw as much as they feel they need to in a game plan and a game to win.

Kurt, TX [via mobile]

Paul, within the division, what positons or positional units (ie off line, LB core, secondary, etc) do the texans NOT rank 1st at vs titans, jags, and colts?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

I don't think they are best at TE or WR in terms of the whole group, though they have the division's best guy in Andre Johnson.

Gary (Jax)

Besides the Jags who have Blackmon and Angerer unsigned, are there any other unsigned rookies in the division?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

It's Anger, not Angerer. And he's signed.

bravus (houston)

paul who do u think will be the top rusher for afc south ?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:54 PM)

Arian Foster.

Zach (Tallahassee)

I bet if you asked Lee Evans he would say he should have caught it. Even with the good DB play he had his hands on it and should have made the better play. and you hurt my heart by not accepting my invite to the Bears JAGS game

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:55 PM)

Should have caught it and dropped it are not the same thing.

Awayne (Indy)

When was the last time you went to a NFL game as just a fan with no writer responsibilities?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:56 PM)

Preseason Jets-Giants in 1990, maybe?

Brian (Cville)

Which player in the division delivers the biggest hits?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:57 PM)

Clint Session, maybe. Poz and Cushing would be up there.

Beverly (Houston)

Why is Lestar Jean not getting any serious consideration as a third reciever in Houston's offense . I know he was injured last year.

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:58 PM)

Who said he's not? How are we making such statements before so much as ONE camp practice?

Matthew (Jacksonville)

Would you say this is the weakest the AFC South has been in years?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

I think we'll wind up saying that about last year.

Awayne (Indy)

With Chris Johnsons speed why is he not more of a threat in the Titans passing game?

Paul Kuharsky
  (12:59 PM)

That's something they have to do a far better job with.

Awayne (Indy)

Of the 234 guys the Colts have signed at CB any chance any of them are being a starter 2 years from now?

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:01 PM)

Always a chance.

Fred (Jax)

Good chat everyone!

Paul Kuharsky
  (1:02 PM)

Thanks to all of you. Appreciate the time and interest. See you soon.
