Welcome to Indianapolis Motor Speedway, A lot going on, so let's get right to it. And I'll apologize up front, I'll have to end the chat about five minutes short to get to an interview.
Who will drive the #22 Shell/Penzoil Dodge in the Sprint Cup Series for the Rest of the Yeare?
Talked to Sam Hornish Jr. today. He knows he's in for the next two races, but beyond that nothing has been said. My bet is he drives most of the races, with another driver or two getting an audition when there's a major conflict with Sam's NW schedule.
You kind of look like my attorney Saul Goodman.
Not sure if that is a compliment or not.
What do you think of Crew Chief changes between 78 and 47 teams? Does JTG need to switch drivers as well? Maybe a younger up and comer like Allgaier or Whitt?
Hey, they were going nowwhere so any change has to be good. As for JTG, I've been saying for some time that it's time to go in a different direction than Labonte. They like having that past champion's provisional, but the time to develop a young driver is here. Allgaier would be a good choice. Heck, put Brian Vickers in a car.
If you had to say right now, where is Urt going in 2013?
Phoenix Racing. I really am beginning to believe his options are running out.
Where do you see Kurt Busch driving next year?....any posibility Newman goes back to Penske and Kurt jumps in the 39 with monster as a sponsor?
Monster to me is the one wild card in this scenario. I don't see Newman going back to Penske, but if that seat is open and Monster is willing I could see it happening. I just don't know how that would impact Kyle's relationship with Monster.
What Is the latest on Andretti coming to Nascar?
Highly unlikely. His words.
Who are your picks for the two wildcard spot?
Kyle Busch and Logano.
What is the status of Logano and JGR? Will we hear anything soon?
Still trying to find a sponsor. They want him for a full NW ride and at least a partial Cup ride if they can't get sponsorship for a full one.
Hi Newt, are you hearing that Kurt might be going back to Penske next year to take back the #22?
You need to be drug tested.
How does NASCAR racing on the infield course (the F1 course) at Indy grab you as opposed to the traditional Brickyard 400?
Couldn't hurt the racing. What gets me is that they moved the NW series from Lucas Oil Raceway. Huge mistake.
Hey Newt, great story on the Top 35 rule. Do you think Kurt Busch could have had a much more successful season if Sadler hadn't wrecked him out on lap 2 of the Daytona 500 utilizing the Top 35 rule?
Thanks. Maybe my memory is failing me, but not sure what you mean by SAdler using the top 35 rule when he wrecked him.
Hi Newt, as a Rowdy fan, I'm getting concerned that Rowdy might not make the chase. What do you think? #18 , in or out?
You should be. Too many guys around him with one win that could knock him back in a hurry. I wouldn't count Gordon out, either.
Does Childress regret letting Clint walk at this point?
He really didn't have much choice with sponsorship and the money Clint was being offered.
David, anything on what manufacturer RPM will be and the driver lineup i know AA was a one yr deal and i read ambrose is up as well ? also anything on Dodge ?
Had that conversation with folks again today. I still believe they'll be back with Ford, but I believe they'll probably move on without Aric. Ambrose they want to re-sign. If Dodge could come up with some money, something RPM will get little of with Ford putting that share into Penske's pocket, there may be reason to move. Just don't see it happening.
Hi Newt, I heard a guy on tv yesterday speculating that Newman might be going back to Penske to run the #22. 2 questions: didn't Newman get fired for all his negativity and wouldn't Kurt be the most viable choice for the #22 because of his strong ties to the sponsors?
Yeah, some have speculated that. But it's pure speculation. Newman left on his own, so there's no bad blood there. And are you crazy with Kurt going back to the 22? It will never happen.
Chevy wised up and is using the Camaro next year. Looks better then the street version ( hate the c pillars)
The street version is better in my humble opinion, but agree having the Camaro with the other muscle cars in NASCAR's Nationwide Series is a good thing. Should have happened three years ago.
I understand where your article is going. However, don't get too far into "what if" land. NASCAR will have some sort of provision if it somehow does abandon the top-35 rule that will give teams another chance at making the Cup field. No way they go full throttle into something like that without a backup contingency.
Hey, if 38 get in on speed and the four highest drivers in points that don't get in on speed get in, the odds of a star being left out are slim to none. It's more of a perception.
Who are your top five favorites for this weekend and your darkhorses?
Gordon, Stewart, Johnson, Earnhardt Jr., Montoya.
by aj doing the road to recovery program, is he admitting he took drugs?
He's admitting the fastest way back into the sport is to take the program.
Good article, but if the fastest 43 made it, that could get bad fast. Think about Homestead last year, what if Edwards or Stewart got a flat during qualifying? You think fans would be more excited about that then the actual race? Maybe top 38 or even 40 and 3 provisional is fine, not best 43. And having it being compared the the golf cut line is different. A better example of that is if someone wrecks, don't come back out (like only top 30 get points). Pretty sure fans don't wanna see a start and parker in a race before Dale Jr. That wouldn't be right.
Yeah, but think about the drama.
I dont understand how the results from the B sample were available so soon but with the A sample they weren't known until a week later. Why wouldn't they have the results of the A sample just as fast so Penske isn't scrambling for a driver at Daytona?
Because they tested specifically for the drug that tested positive and not the hundreds of others that they normally test for.
With Danica Patrick making her Stock Car Debut at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the Indy 250, When will we see her in the Brickyard 400?
If Jeff Gordon fails to make the Chase, who takes the fall? Will the 24 have a new crew chief next year?
Good question. I don't think it is the crew chief. Might have to write it off as just one of those things.
Why would anyone be upset about getting rid of the top 35 rule? In my opinion, the Dayton 500 never should have been ran by those rules. What always made the Indy 500 and Daytona 500 special were the qualifying rules that were different from any other race ran in their respective series. You get in on speed in the case of Indy or you get in via the Duels at Daytona. If you don't make it, too bad, too sad.
I'd like to see heat races myself.
david , will the camaro be phased in next season or will it be fulltime, reason i ask i seen a article where it said the camaro will be a must in plate races but still may run impala in some races ?
Fulltime starting at Daytona.
I guess the million dollar question, any realistic chance Penske keeps Allmendinger around or should we expect an announcement next week that the Dinger's been released?
I do believe Penske parts with Dinger, but I don't see it as coming so fast. They really don't have to do anything. They have a one-year deal and when this season is over he's out of a job anyway.
If he can't field a new team for him, would Joe Gibbs let Joey Logano go the the #22 in 2013.
Don't think Gibbs can stop him since Joey doesn't have a deal after this season.
Is it true that Danica might be the driver in the #22 next year?
NOOOOOOOO. She is in the 10 at SHR.
Hi Newt, I'm not a fan of AJ's but I feel for him and his career if he unintentionally took a banned substance. Is his career effectively over?
I think Brad Keselowski said it best, it's a death sentence.
David, always appreciate your prospective. How do you see Dale Jr's chances this week
I put him in my top 5. He's been fast all season, and this is a place where speed counts a lot.
Has the allure of NASCAR at Indy run its course? The racing is bad because of the track configuration, and people have stopped showing up.
It has for me, but the drivers and some fans still love it. And NASCAR likes the big stage, so it's not going anywhere.
Who operates Road to Recovery?
Aegis and Dr. Black is where AJ reports first. Dr. Black recommends AJ to a health care facility for assessment. Check out my newser from yesterday. It explains it all. Here's the link. http://es.pn/MmtCzE
Do you think RCR focus on the Diloon twins is the main reason they can't win in cup and the reason RCR performance has dropped off so bad in cup?
Nope. Talked to Childress today. He said the power in the engines is there, that there are a whole lot of little things holding the organization back. He reminded a year ago RCR won 6 times, more than any Chevy organization.
When Danica's contract with JRM is up next year, who should they sign to drive her car?
Her contract is up this year, but she's talking about a part-time role in 2013. They have a list of drivers they're looking at for the future, though.
With Dale winning his 2nd race since 2006, we thought the fans would be back so why was the 57,000 seat Daytona back stretch stand empty during the Pepsi 400?
It's been empty for several years. They haven't opened it for a while. Dale Jr. can't perform magic.
Nascar would be out of their minds to let a big name/sponsor miss a race.....Find a way to get rid of the start and park teams... leve qualifying alone....it has always been boring !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! except for Daytona and the all star race
You make good points.
Do you think Dale, Jr. will perform well this weekend?
Yep. I believe he has a good shot at winning.
Do you still think that Joey makes the chase and what are the chances he's back with JGR.
I do. He could win at Pocono again next week and be solid. As for returning to JGR, I would have said 100 percent before the Penske 22 seat came open. Now I'm thinking 85 percent
Any news on where Logano may end up next year
JGR is my first pick, fulltime NW and part-time Cup.
I have followed NASCAR for over 40 years. I quit going to qualifing at CLT not because of the 35 rule, but because it is always on TV. Why pay money to sit in the hot sun to watch single car qualifing when I can watch it at home in Hi Def. Now if my favorite driver is not in the show, I am not watching. Tracks make their money off TV revenue not ticket sales on Pole Day
My mancave is pretty comfy too. You may be right. Perhaps tracks should have the drivers come into the stands after qualifying to sign autographs. Maybe people would show up for that.
What are your thought's on Danica's possible jump to a full Cup schedule next year?
First, it's a definite. I know some believe she needs another year in NW, but I believe the time has come to make it or go home.
Predictions for Dale Jr This Weekend?
Top 5 like he does almost every week.
Tuesday on ESPN NASCAR Now, Jermey Mayfield told Shannon Spake he did nothing wrong and took no illegal substances. If that is so why should be believe NASCAR on the Allmenginder matter?
First, the records show Mayfield tested positive for methamphetamines. Denial is pretty big with those that use drugs.
Congrats on turning the auto update on today! Anwyay, how issay JJ Yeley getting into a race and parking after 5 laps better than seeing say Kasey Kahne race the full race (just using him as an example).
I do that every time. Maybe it doesn't work sometimes. Anyway, if you are comparing the two there's no comparison. The driver that goes a full race is what the sport is about.
Hey David, Interesting article on doing away with the Top 35 rule. Didn't I hear earlier in the week that NASCAR was thinking of increasing the top 35 to 38????? Trying to keep more sponsors happy I suppose.
No, you heard NASCAR is looking at the top 38 fastest in speed getting in, then the next four highest in points get in that don't qualify on speed.
I am not a Cousin Carl apologist (I am actually a long suffering Biffle apologist) but so many people are writing him off. If he wins one single race, he's in the driver's seat for the WC, no? He's got a 22 point lead over Kyle right now. What gives?
Carl has led one lap outside of Richmond. It's hard to win a race when you can't get to the front.
Why would anyone want the Cup guys to race the road course at Indy......it really stinks for a road course.
As I said earlier, can it be worse than the racing on the oval?
Have we seen the high water mark for the sixteen team this season?
It's hard to go higher than No. 1 where he was, but it's a long year. He hasn't fallen off that much and there's plenty of time to get back to 1.
Who do you see driving the KBM NW car next season?
Would like to see Kyle develop a young driver. More than likely Kyle and somebody else, maybe Kurt again if sponsorship depends on it.
I really believe Logano in the 22 next year David, along with Sam in the 12 with Alliance Truck Parts, you think it could happen? Just think Penske and Shell and even Ford want a young gun like Joey in there stable.
That could happen. Sam has said Alliance and Werth have shown interest in following him into Cup. But until that is a certainty, Sam has to be hopefully for the 22 with Shell. And the Shell folks think highly of him, having worked with him in IndyCar.
Do you think JR will keep his streak of lead lap finishes alive this weekend and where will he finish?
Yes and third.
If the Camaro goes over well, do you see it entering the Cup Series at some point?
Never say never, but Chevy likes pushing its other brands that don't sell quite as well in the Cup series.
Hey... I don't have access to a TV. Can you tell me why Kenny Wallace hasn't been on the track yet for practice at Indy?
The 24 has run three laps. Saw him in the garage.
I think Ron meant Sadler being locked in at Daytona utilizing the #33 points from 2011. And only running the one race.
Ah, thanks for clarifying. Hey, can't blame RC for putting that car on the track in a big race. And Sadler is good enough at Daytona to have qualified on speed, anyway.
Jeff Gordon, in or out of the chase? He can win at Indy and jump over Kyle for the second wild card.
He can't jump over with one win. He would have to pass in points as well and he's too far back to do that in one race. I haven't ruled him out, but this is a big weekend.
I don't have a problem with making sure the best and biggest name drivers and teams are automatically in, especially if one slip and a torn up car on one single qual lap can keep you out of the race. However, I think the pole winner and outside pole should get points, maybe 6 and 3 respectively?
I don't have any problem with giving points to pole winners, but six is too much if you only et three for a win.
Hey Newt, really enjoyed the article today. My question is do you think it's a sure thing Kenseth goes to Gibbs in the 20 with home depot as his sponsor, and if he does who do you think is his crew chief?
Thanks. Because I know he is going to Gibbs. Now you'll ask why I haven't written that in a newser. Working on it. Not sure who will be the crew chief.
when will we learn if RPM stays at Ford or switches to Dodge or Toyota ? whats the latest ?
Have to believe in the next month, maybe the next two weeks. Still see Ford as the best option.
How does the new qualifying rumor compare to to old system? What did they do before the "top 35" rule?
Old system changed around. There usually were two past champion provisionals and then qualify, but need to research to make sure that's right. My memory of 2004 is dim.
If JGR gets to the end of the season and doesn't have a sponsor for Logano, what happens? Do they let him go? When do they cut bait and announce Kenseth in the 20?
Well, they have sponsorship for him to run in the NW series. Just depends on whether Logano wants to run NW or go to another team and run Cup if he can find a ride. Kenseth probably at least two weeks out.
Do you think drivers with experience at IMS in either the Brickyard 400 or the Indy 500 will be favorite to win the nationwide series race with the experience they have at IMS?
Cup drivers in the NW will always have the upper hand. Under your scenario Sam Hornish is the favorite.
Have you heard anything about the tracks putting in wifi for fan access like some of the NFL stadiums?
Nothing yet, but I wouldn't be suprrised to see that come soon.
Put me down as on board with you and Hinton re: NW @ Indy. Maybe test the Board of Directors @ Indy rather than Andrew in KY?
You mean I agreed with Hinton on something?
is Ford offering RPM any money ? or just a marketing deal for the King to promote there brand ?
What money Ford had for RPM is going to Penske. If RPM gets anyting it will be pennies to the dollar.
Outside of Jr being 16 points back, Kenseth has pretty much lapped the entire field and several Chase drivers are 2-3 full races behind in terms of points. Are they going to give a bigger bonus at some point to the points leader heading into the Chase. His domination over 26 races should be rewarded much more than someone who wins a race or two.
I've always said there should be a bonus for the leader after 26 races. Otherwise, what's the purpose of trying to be there as opposed to taking more chances on wins?
who is the most athletic and unathletic driver you have seen?
Unathletic was Brad Keselowski dribbling a basketball at Bobcats Arena a few years ago. My wife even said he dribbled like a girl. Most athletic would be between Kahne and Hamlin.
We say the crew chief change for the 99 will be winning combo this weekend. Book it!
Not convinced one guy can find more speed.
what is going on with harvick? can i just blame this on delana?
He's still sixth in points and had a chance to win two or three races this year.
if logano leaves jgr, how about putting kyle in the 20 and jj yeley back in the 18
Are you kidding. If anything I would put Joey in the 18 with M&Ms and Kyle in another car with Monster.
Real quick David, when do you think we know about the 22 situation for '13 and RPM's manufacture next year?
22 at least a month or two. RPM a few weeks to a month.
Do you think the Nationwide winner should climb the fence and kiss the bricks or is that only from Helio and the Indy 500 winners?
It's already been spoiled by the Cup guys, so doesn't matter much to me.
Have to run. Chip Ganassi and a few drivers are waiting on me. Thanks for all the questions. Have a great rest of the week.
