Chat with Dan Rafael

Dan Rafael
  (12:00 PM)

Greetings Fight Freaks and welcome to the weekly boxing chat. Not a lot this weekend but we have a good FNF tonight with Hanky Lundy vs Ray Beltran and there's a Showtime card tomorrow that I'm interested in with Robert Guerrero moving up to welterweight to fight Aydin. And then there's the news about Mayweather and 50 Cent teaming up. Plus there are plenty of news stories and blogs for the week, so let's get to it.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

What other fights are on the Martinez vs Chavez undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

It's not done yet. If Top Rank re-signs Rigondeaux, he will probably be on. There's a chance lightweight tilist Miguel Vazquez will defend on the card and DiBella will put on Matt Macklin. There was some discussion that Mike Alvarado would be on but that may not happen as he is in position to fight for a 140 belt in the event Peterson is stripped. So they are waiting to see what happens. So in short, nothing is finalized yet.

Gabe Saginaw Mi [via mobile]

Anys news on Mike Alvarado next fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:01 PM)

See above.

Garth (Norwalk, CT)

Dan, how much is Goldenboy sweating about possibly losing out on being able to promote Floyd anymore once he gets out? I know they will survive without Floyd but I am sure they would hate to lose him while he's still an active fighter.

Dan Rafael
  (12:02 PM)

I dont think they are "sweating" it. I'm sure they'd be disappointed but they did a great job for Floyd. Floyd, of course, is entitled to pursue whatever he wants since he is not contractually obligated to anyone. And, also, there is no reason why 50 Cent and GB couldn't work together in some fashion.

Joe (Pittsburgh)

Can Adrien Broner even make 135 without killing himself?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

He did make 133.5 for the Escobedo fight, so yes.

Jim (Cleveland)

Dan, what can we expect from Shawn Porter tomorrow night? The Moseley comparisons are pretty high praise.

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Porter is a good prospect but he aint no Mosley.

Frank (PHX)

DTM, any word on the fourth bout for the Canelo undercard?

Dan Rafael
  (12:03 PM)

Not yet.

David Haye (London)

What do you think of rapper 50 cent becoming a boxing promoter ? Is it good or bad for the sport in your opinion ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

If he puts on shows and operates professionally, I think it's great for boxing. He is a known figure, brings his own fans and can inject some excitement. If he's in it only to be involved with Mayweather fights then it's not so good. But he is signing Dirrell and Gamboa too, so hopefully he'll be doing more boxing business than just Mayweather bouts.

Matt (Spokane, WA)

Are there any Olympic boxers that you are particularly high on? How much do you pay attention to Olympic boxing?

Dan Rafael
  (12:05 PM)

I will pay close attention. Coverage on CNBC begins Saturday morning and I will be watching. Lomachenko, of course, is one of the guys to watch. He is a great amateur. And I am also interested in seeing how the American kids perform.

Joe (Frankfurt)

So all I need is a successful rap career to be a boxing promoter? Let me get right on that.

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Word.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Will Al Haymon or Leonard Ellerbe be a part of TMT Promotions?

Dan Rafael
  (12:06 PM)

Remains to be seen. Here's a piece I wrote yesterday with comments from Ellerbe: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8202083/rapper-50-cent-poised-floyd-mayweather-promoter

Garth (Norwalk, CT)

Do you agree with Stephen A Smith that 50cent is best person to hopefully convince Floyd to agree to 50/50 and fight Pacquaio?

Dan Rafael
  (12:07 PM)

I haven't heard Stephen A. say that but Floyd and 50 are tight and I would think anything 50 says Floyd would at least respect the opinion.

rob (jersey)

DGBP; (or D? what's the official currency for the Olympics?, besides VISA?) It's almost time for Vasyl Lomechenko...

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

LOL.

Victor (Chicago, IL)

What's your pick for Guerrero-Aydin?

Dan Rafael
  (12:08 PM)

I like Guerrero. I think he'll be OK at 147 and he has a chip on his shoulder with something to prove. He'll be faster as well. I think he wins a decision.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Will it be mandatory for every TMT Promotions fighter to have a ringwalk to a 50 cent song?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I dont think so.

JoJo (Williamsburg, MA)

If Broner fights Rios, there should be no weight limit?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley.

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Here's my feature on Guerrero: http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8205072/robert-guerrero-making-bold-move-147-pounds

Charlie (Chicago, IL)

If the Stevenson-George fight goes on without Pascal-Cloud, would it still be in Montreal? Any chance it comes to Chicago with George being from here and Stevenson training close by?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

Yes, it would still be in Montreal.

Mike (pa)

any word on how many people broner drew last weekend ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:09 PM)

I think about 4,000ish.

Lou (Detroit)

Dan, I believe HBO picking up Vitali-Charr is a direct result -- and maybe a premptive move -- from EPIX recent success with the Klitschkos and their HW division coverage in general.

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

It could be but I also know HBO wants to really make Sept. 8 special. They want a huge audience for Ward-Dawson, which they are spending a lot of money and marketing on. Adding a heavyweight title fight with Klitschko will bring additional attention to the telecast and the Klitschkos have always done good ratings for HBO. In addition, HBO also has the US rights to show the Klitschko documentary, so that is also part of the reason it picked up the fight. I believe the docu will debut on HBO that night.

Benjamin (Little Rock, Ark.)

Future headline: "Finally! Fitty fosters 50-50 fight for Floyd, Filipino"

Dan Rafael
  (12:11 PM)

Not bad.

Guano man (Puerto rico)

dan I heard malinaggi may face cano on morales vs Garcia II where you surprised they never considered dulorme considering he is puertorican and will probably help with tickets sales and is probably a better fight

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

Dulorme is an unproven fighter who is only a prospect right now. Not even close to a big fight or meaningful fight at this point.

Bill (Newport Beach)

Dan, your opinion on the assertation that Pascal was avoiding Cloud.

Dan Rafael
  (12:12 PM)

I dont buy it at all.

Joe (Pittsburgh)

Did Jose Luis Castillio show anything for you the other night to show that he can be a contender again?

Dan Rafael
  (12:13 PM)

No. He showed he can beat limited opposition.

tito (Santa Fe)

Why Lomachenko and Cammarelle never turned pro are mysteries to me. Dan, are these guys really "amateurs?"

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Cant speak for why Cammarelle didnt turn pro. I believe he is a police officer in Italy. Lomachenko wanted to win a 2012 gold and was paid to remain amateur by his country's federation. Go figure -- being paid to stay amateur. Anyway, after the London Games are over I am told he will pursue a pro career.

Rick (Marina Ca)

What up Dan, it will be only a matter of time before Broner gets exposed, the guy hasn't proved anything by fighting a bunch bums and the 2 fights that were live, he was given a decision vs Ponce and didnt even bother to make weight vs Escobedo, the guy is ridicoulus.

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

The guy can also fight.

Tommy (Detroit)

Dan-O-Mite: You are approaching 100,000 followers on Twitter. Can we get a door prize if us freaks do a little #FF action and try to get you there soon?

Dan Rafael
  (12:14 PM)

Depends what you want the prize to be!

C.M. (Toronto)

So with 50 Cent signing Dirrell, I guess it is safe to assume that Dirrell finally was able to remember the name of his doctor?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!

Ray (Pomona)

When do you expect we'll find out if Pacman is fighting Marquez or Bradley?

Dan Rafael
  (12:15 PM)

I think Arum and Pacquiao will hash it out sometime in late August.

Peter (Philadelphia)

Which is the best USA Olympic boxing team: 1976, 1984 or 1996?

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

I've always been partial to 84 although those who disagree say they didn't have to face Cubans or Soviets because of the boycott. But they both produced all-time greats like SRL and Michael Spinks in 1976 and Holyfield and Pernell in 1984 (not to mention Meldrick Taylor, who was very special for a period of time, and Virgil Hill, a borderline HOFer). 1996 was a good team with Mayweather as the class of it. But there was also Tarver and Vargas. But I still rate it below 84 and 76.

Dan Rafael
  (12:18 PM)

A lot of the Fight Freaks seemed to like the pix I tweeted of some of my boxing cards. Here's another one I tweeted the other day: http://twitpic.com/abmbri

Dino (Lexington, KY)

If people thought Vegas judge scoring was bad, just wait until they see Olympic judge scoring...

George (Chicago)

Boxing fans should not fret over August cancellations and instead focus on Olympic boxing -- that's where much of the future of our sport rests.

Dan Rafael
  (12:21 PM)

For those who want to watch, there will be comprehensive TV coverage of the boxing tourney on CNBC. Live coverage begins Saturday morning at 8:30 am. There will be at least a 3-hour block every day. There will also be other bouts on Telemundo (in Spanish). Go here for the schedule: http://www.nbcolympics.com/boxing/index.html

Jason (Can)

Hey Dan, from my understanding 50's licience is just for the NY area?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

He was licensed in NY a week or so ago. He is in the application process in Nevada. One state at a time.

Joseph (Texas)

A certain Irish friend that lives in VA theorizes that Donaire/Arce will be here in San Antonio in fall. Can you confirm or deny any rumblings about that fight?

Dan Rafael
  (12:22 PM)

Good chance it will be in San Antonio.

Joe (Frankfurt)

If Jose Benavidez Jr. was still an amateur, would he likely be considered the favorite to win gold in his weight class?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Absolutely.

Walter (LA, CA)

Any thoughts on Raw 1000?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

I hope there are 1,000 more!

John (Austin)

Danlympian, what will happen first, PacMan v 01363917 (Floyd's inmate #) or Deontay Wilder facing a tough opponent?

Dan Rafael
  (12:23 PM)

Wilder.

Slater (West by God Virginia)

DTM, rumor is Froch is conisdering Pavlik for his interim bout before the Bute rematch. I hope it's true cause it would damn sure be entertaining. Do you think theres any possibility to this or just wishfull thinking?

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

You never know but I very much doubt that fight will happen as Froch's interim bout.

aaron (denver)

not that i agree or disagree but whats your reasoning for putting gamboa on your p4p list and not adrien broner? I think broner should be top 10 and you dont have him in your top 20

Dan Rafael
  (12:24 PM)

Gamboa has beaten better opponents overall.

Wade (Still at work, not bored today)

Danph Ziggler, noticed Aaron Pryor in the ring before Broner fight, what's going on with him.

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Pryor is a Cinci legend and Broner is from Cinci and idolizes Pryor. They are friendly.

C.M. (Toronto)

Just wanted to congratulate Ken Hershman on the pathetic card he allowed to be televised thanks to a certain someone's sway. Nice to know he is picking up where Russ Greenberg left off: in the palm of Haymon's hand!

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

Wow.

Danny (Orange, CA)

Hey Dan, did tickets go on sale for Canelo vs. Lopez fight yet? Any word of pricing???

Dan Rafael
  (12:25 PM)

They are on sale. I do not recall the prices but I know there were $25 tix.

Sean Mc (Ireland)

How was KISS ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:26 PM)

KISS was great!!! (So was Crue). Mrs. DTM and I got to meet the band before the show and have our pictures taken with them. It was great. She made a big printout of the photo and framed it for me with our tickets and VIP wristbands and I am going to hang it up in my office. Great show and great to meet the band.

Rick (Marina Ca)

I thought it was funny hearing the HBO broadcast crew trying to hype this Thurman character.

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

I didnt think it was funny. It was actully quit vomit inducing.

Lennie (Dallas)

Dan, in your opinion, the most boisterous, exuberant boxing fans in the world come from...?

Dan Rafael
  (12:27 PM)

England. Hands down.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

what are your thoughts on seeing Ichiro in pinstripes?

Dan Rafael
  (12:28 PM)

LOVE IT.

George (Inland Empire)

Dan, are you as pumped up for the Hammerin Hank Lundy vs. Beltran fight as I am. How do you see that one going?

Dan Rafael
  (12:29 PM)

I dont know if I am "pumped" but I have liked watching Lundy's recent fights. I think it's a solid match. Lundy had a lot of trouble making weight yesterday. I'll be interested to see if it has any impact on his performance tonight.

John (Austin)

So what's next for James Kirkland after his graduation from Winky Wright's School of Negotions?

Dan Rafael
  (12:30 PM)

Detention?

JonG (Queens)

Feel like I heard that EVERY olympic boxing match would be viewable online is that true or no?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

NBC's website will have streams of everything I think plus the live coverage on television.

Rick (Marina Ca)

I heard rumors that Khan may dump Roach any truth ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:31 PM)

It's possible they may split but nothing has been decided in that regard yet.

Craig (Santa Ana)

Who did the boxing gods upset to give us Bute vs. Grachev?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

I'm not sure what you mean but that is a very solid fight for Bute coming off a KO loss.

Keith H (Seattle)

While most of us in the 206 would never root for the Yankees, if Ichiro gets a ring out of the deal, we'll be fine with it. Everyone knows it won't happen here anytime soon.

Charlie (NYC)

Dan, is TMT Promotions going to be a full scale outfit like Golden Boy/Top Rank, or is it going to be something smaller like Mayweather Promotions? And what will happen to Mayweather Promotions anyway?

Dan Rafael
  (12:32 PM)

All remains to be seen.

Rick (Marina Ca)

Now that I think about it why in the world was Thurman even given a Max interview, HBO never did that on Bad undercards unless maybe it was a known fighter. Damn HBO, they getting played like suckers.

Dan Rafael
  (12:33 PM)

I assume he was interviewed because the fight went short and there was time to kill before the main event.

JonG (Queens)

Thurman in no way shape or form deserved to be on hbo, and his opponent was weak at best, but lets not blame the kid. He actually looks like a pretty legit prospect to me and is a hard hitting entertaining fighter. Exact type of guy Id love to see on ESPN, SHObox and Show Extreme bouts.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

I agree. Shouldn't have been on HBO. Shoulda been on those other more developmental platforms first.

The Met (T.O.)

The state of boxing on premium television programming today: the Haymon Boxing Organization (HBO) and Stephen's Haymon Operation (SHO). Enough said. Sick of this crap.

Dan Rafael
  (12:34 PM)

Dang. Tell us how you really feel.

Aaron (Hartford)

Is Edison Miranda officially an opponent now with a good name ?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Yes, he has been for awhile. Now he'll lend his name to Tony Bellew's resume.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

any truth to the rumors about Victor Ortiz dumping Danny Garcia as his trainer?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Correct.

Sam (London)

Will Francisco Sierra be a good test for Groves? Heard he can bang a bit

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

He can and it's a legit fight.

Ryan (UK)

News on Joel Julio?

Dan Rafael
  (12:35 PM)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, the Love Child.

Derek (Brooklyn)

Doesn't Showtimes announcement of the Olympic deal with GBP bf the games even start give GBP an unfair advantage over other promoters in signing talent? Isn't Showtime being disingenious when they say they are not playing favorites?

Dan Rafael
  (12:36 PM)

I wont say it is "unfair" but it is an advantage. Any promoter would do the same thing if they could. GB has the leverage and they use every ounce of it. I'd do the same thing.

John (Phoenix)

Dan, it looks like Ticketmaster is selling tickets for a multi-day event for Top Rank in Vegas on August 3 & 4. What on Earth is this?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

Top Rank has the ESPN2 show on Aug. 3 and the Telefutura show on Aug. 4. Both are taking place at the same venue in Vegas so fans can buy tix to get into both shows.

mike (vegas)

Any word of who will be on the undercard for Deontay wilder vs kerston manswell next weekend?

Dan Rafael
  (12:37 PM)

I'm not sure yet as I have not gotten a bout sheet yet for the show.

Chris (Bay Area)

Dan, I'm going to the Guerrero Fight tomorrow. Any idea on expected turnout? Still good seats available.

Dan Rafael
  (12:38 PM)

Have fun. I have no idea about the expectations for that show but Robert is from the area so hopefully it will sell well.

Julio (Dallas)

Have you ever had a conversation with Richard Schaffer about DLH and his Twitter nonsense? I feel Schaffer should tell DLH to get off twitter or at least give it a day before posting.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I joked with Richard a few months ago when he signed a contract extension to remain the GB CEO that he should have negotiated into his deal the right to control Oscar's Twitter feed.

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

I joked with Richard a few months ago when he signed a contract extension to remain the GB CEO that he should have negotiated into his deal the right to control Oscar's Twitter feed.

Larry (Sac, Ca) [via mobile]

Any problems with a Sergio Martinez vs. Andre Ward if they both handle their business

Dan Rafael
  (12:40 PM)

If they both win, that would be interesting.

The Met (T.O.)

In honor of the anniversary of Vernon Forrest's tragic murder. May the Viper continue to rest in peace. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GxGErfnPcJw

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

Good stuff. Three years ago yesterday.

Jack (Bridgewater, NJ)

Seems like Alfonso Gomez has fallen into the opponent category as well. Do you give him any chance vs. Porter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:41 PM)

He has become an opponent but a good enough one where you think he always has an outside shot.

@PappaFeez (Dallas)

Will you be making any apperances on FNF's in the near future?

Dan Rafael
  (12:42 PM)

Tonight.

Guano man (Puerto rico)

dan I am very interested in Puerto Rican fighters Jonathan Gonzalez and orlandito del valle have important fights coming with darchinyan and dzinziruk what are your thoughs on those two fights and do you feel is the right step up for both guys

Dan Rafael
  (12:43 PM)

I think both guys are good prospects. I'm a little higher on Del Valle than Gonzalez, although I like both. Both are entertaining, which to me is important. They are both in legit fights although I think Gonzalez is in a tougher fight. I dont think Vic will be able to hang at 122. But he is very experienced. Bottom line is that both guys are taking on legit opponents and stepping up. That's a good thing. Now it's up to them to make the most of the opportunity.

Ted (NM)

I don't know why everyone is crapping on August as a bad month of boxing. We get the rematch EVERYONE was clamoring for: Brian Vera vs. Sergio Mora! This is bigger than anything else!

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

LOL. Ever the optimist.

Taylor (SLC, UT)

Buy or Sell...For better or for worse, Al Haymond is currently the most influential man in boxing.

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Buy. And it's Haymon.

Lennie (Dallas)

Is Teddy Atlas covering Olympic boxing this year? If so, who takes his place on FNF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:46 PM)

Teddy is at the Olympics. There will be others sitting in for him for the next few weeks. Tonight is Zab Judah.

Besim (Staten Island, New York)

True story: A few days ago, I wrote to ESPN about #4-20 P4P rankings being the only thing not available to boxing fans; I never liked that about the ESPN boxing page. ESPN replied quickly, saying they'd consider changing it. Later that day, you tweeted that they're now available. Score one for the freaks!

Dan Rafael
  (12:47 PM)

Yup. The full p4p top 20 is now free. http://espn.go.com/boxing/story/_/id/8198038/ranking-top-pound-pound-boxers-nos-1-3

Steve (Hartford)

If Dawson beats Ward is it time to start thining of him for HOF?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Relax.

Ricky (Nyc)

Happy birthday to Paul Williams!

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

Yes sir. Paul is 31 today. Happy birthday.

Adam (DuPage)

How many Ricky Hattons are about to make a comeback?

Dan Rafael
  (12:48 PM)

None.

Milton (Raleigh)

Not trying to be dark here, but does the 80+ year old Bob Arum have a succession plan after he moves on? You don't hear of many name around Bob whereas with GBP you hear several people who have some influence.

Dan Rafael
  (12:49 PM)

No idea what you are talking about. Todd duBoef, the president of the company, is Bob's stepson and perfectly capable of running the company. He is been running a large part of the company for years.

John (Albany)

Will you be present at Turning Stone for Golovkin fight, since that is where it all started for you?

Dan Rafael
  (12:51 PM)

Turning Stone is not where I covered my first fight but it is where I covered my first world title bout (Too Sharp Johnson-Luis Rolon on ABC Wide World of Sports in 1997). But I won't be there. I have an 11-day road trip to Oakland and Las Vegas after that for Ward-Dawson and Martinez-Chavez/Canelo-Lopez. Plus I likely will also be traveling later in September for an Epix event.

Mark (Jersey)

Do you get paid in addition to your current salary for appearing on Friday night fights?

Dan Rafael
  (12:52 PM)

Your nosey.

Brinsley (St Albans, UK)

Hey Dan, I often see you on Sky and wondered how well you get on with Johnny Nelson? Did you follow much of his career and do you think Nelson vs Haye would have been a good contest at Cruiser?

Dan Rafael
  (12:53 PM)

I like Johnny a lot. Super good dude. Had a chance to hang with him a little when I was in England for Froch-Bute. I did follow his career through his reign at cruiserweight. Not the most exciting fighter (being honest, sometimes downright unwatchable) but I always respected his boxing skills. He knew what he needed to do to win and he had a lot of impressive showings.

Jeff (Austin)

Just read your P4P rankings and two things stood out to me: One is the presence of Anselmo Morenoa??good call; I think hea??s underrated by most people and Ia??d be interested in an update on him. And the second is the absence of Rigondeaux. I think most people would put him above, say, Mares. Any additional commentary on him?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Rigondeaux's pro resume is devoid of a single significant win at this point.

Christopher (Kalamazoo, MI)

Ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!! Dawson in the HOF. Yeah, Josesito Lopez is getting inducted if he beats Canelo.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

do you at times find it difficult to come up with a clever lede for a story or blog, or does it already come natural?

Dan Rafael
  (12:54 PM)

Sometimes it's harder than other times. But I don't usually have problems with it.

JonG (Queens)

Ill be up in the hometown of rochester that weekend and was pretty excited to hear that Golovkin/Proska is at turning stone, but outside of the fact that its something Ill be able to go see I find the location a bit odd no?

Dan Rafael
  (12:55 PM)

Not at all. Casinos often host fights. Turning Stone has dabbled in boxing. Nothing remarkable about the site.

Julio (Dallas)

How do Floyd and Gamboa even communicate?Does Gamboa speak English (I'm only ever heard him speak Spanish)

Dan Rafael
  (12:56 PM)

Maybe Roger translates?

Karl Welzein (Grand Blanc, MI.)

Just wondering what so-called HBO 'consultant' Tom Hauser thought of Saturday night's disgrace? Lol

Ricky (Nyc)

Dan Is floyd scheduled to be released next week? If so do you see him fighting this yr?

Dan Rafael
  (12:58 PM)

He is due to be released on Aug. 3 assuming there are no issues. As for a fight later in the year, undetermined. He said before Cotto he wanted another fight this year. But after jail who knows what he will want to do?

Buster (Buffalo)

Question that you may have previously addressed. What is the difference between a manager and a promoter?

Dan Rafael
  (12:59 PM)

Managers have a fiduciary duty to the fighter. They negotiate with the promoter on the fighter's behalf for the purses and whatever other contractual things a fighter may want. The promoter does not have a fiduciary duty to the boxer and is responsible for all aspects of putting on the event, which a manager is not.

Kevin (Plymouth, MI)

I recently watched Toney's youtube rant against you. Do you know if they plan on releasing an English version?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

Pay the man, Shirley!!

Frank (Tulsa)

Will you be amongst the throng of media at Floyd's prison release from Clark County Detention Center?

Dan Rafael
  (1:00 PM)

No. I have better things to do with my time.

Julio (Dallas)

I love Cunningham coming over to HW, for an Adamek fight. Their first fight was FOY candidate in my opinion. But besides the Adamek fight do you actually see Cunningham competing in the HW division?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

He'll give it a try like many cruiserweights have. How he will do? I have no idea. But he's a hard worker and will give it an honest effort. All you can ask for.

wes (bentonville,arkansas)

whats ur thoughts on Donald Curry in his prime?

Dan Rafael
  (1:02 PM)

Tremendous fighter for a brief period.

aaron (detroit)

Will Lundy make it to HBO or Showtime if he looks good tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:03 PM)

He should.

felix tito trinidad, amazon jungle [via mobile]

I think tito trinidad would have destroyed pacquiao and all of the welterweights outhere besides floyd because of his great defense. Your opiniĆ³n dan

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Trinidad had great defense? You feeling OK?

Roger (LA)

I wish The Ghost would have stayed at lightweight. Guerrero vs Broner would have been a great fight! Any chance this could still happen?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

I wish Guerrero would have moved up sooner.

Karl Welzein (Grand Blanc, MI.)

If Lundy wants to HBO or Showtime, he should just sign with Al Haymon.

Mike S. (San Antonii)

Broner vs. Linares?

Dan Rafael
  (1:06 PM)

Oh stop.

Billy (California)

I notices that you, and most others also, seem to rate Vladamir Klitshcko a little higher than Vitali. I always wonder why since Vladamir has been knocked out cold twice, and Vitali has never been down and was also beating Lennox Lewis--- a MUCH toucher foe than Valdamir has ever faced?

Dan Rafael
  (1:08 PM)

First of all, Wlad was not knocked out cold ever. In his two stoppage losses to Brewster and Sanders he got up and the fight was stopped. So learn your history. But to answer the question, Wladimir has beaten a little better competition, been more active thru his career, is a more versatile fighter, seems to have better overall skills. I once talked to Vitali at length about this too and he also said he believed Wladimir was the better, more natutal fighter. He said it was because Wlad only boxed but Vitali started by doing kickboxing and had to make the change over. Wlad was more natural. Vitali may have faced Lennox but he also lost fair and square.

Hey Dan! Gotta disagree with HBO...in Thurman, I saw a guy who could make a nice little living on espn2. But with his REALLY wide punches, he'd easily get drilled against any decent fighter. Some of those wide punches on replay looked absolutely amatuerish...and a bad amatuer at that.

Chris (Bay Area)

Aydin is much of an unknown. What do you know about him Dan?

Dan Rafael
  (1:09 PM)

He was a top, top amateur. He is unbeaten. He has wins against solid guys like Ouali, Bonus and Jo Jo Dan (although one of their two fights was quite a questionable decision). He's a legit fighter. I have ranked in the lower part of the top 10 welters.

Jorge Linares (?)

Why do people hate me so much they want to see me fight Broner? :(

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Exactly.

C.M. (Toronto)

I've heard that Manny Pacquaio has just been inked as Chick-A-Fil's new spokesperson. Any comment?

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

LOL!

Daniel (Wilmington, Ca)

Going to Vegas for my cousins bachelor party on the weekend of 9/14-16 plus we got good tickets to the Canelo fight. It's going to be a great weekend.

Dan Rafael
  (1:10 PM)

Nice.

Julian (Davenport, IA)

True story: Went to the fight last weekend and snuck all the way down to the table where Lampley, Kellerman, and RJJ call the fight. Roy was the first one there and I asked if he could take a pic and sign me an autograph. Did it without ANY hesitation. Made my trip!!!

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

That's great. Boxing folks are among the very best when it comes to talking with fans, taking pix and signing autographs. I've seen Roy take pix with a million people over the years.

Keith H (Seattle)

Will Zab have the shower door with him on FNF tonight?

Dan Rafael
  (1:11 PM)

LOL. No I dont think so.

jcs (edmonton)

speaking of Zab, has he got anything lined up?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Not at the moment but he is mandatory for Lamont Peterson. And if Peterson is stripped by the IBF over the drug situation, Zab would fight for the vacant title. The next contender who would be offered the bout is Mike Alvarado.

Daniel (Wilmington, Ca)

In regards to the Chavez and Canelo fights, do you think the weigh ins will at least be at different times or will that also happen at the same time on Friday?

Dan Rafael
  (1:13 PM)

Nope, I expect they will happen at the same time.

Nick (DE)

You said you are traveling in septmeber for an epix broadcast, would that broadcast possibly be Burns-Mitchell?

Dan Rafael
  (1:15 PM)

Correct. Epix is likely going to do that fight.

Power Pellets (Las Vegas)

Dan I saw you tweeting your cards and have heard over the years about your vast boxing collection. Have you made any plans for who will get it after you are gone?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

Not you!

Wes (North CA)

Just rewatched Gatti/Ward I(for the 50th time) and was curious how you scored that bout? Was the knockdown enough to get Ward the win?

Dan Rafael
  (1:16 PM)

I thought Gatti edged him.

p71 (Hartford)

If Martinez gets by Chavez does that demand a fight with Canelo? Do you think that team Canelo would have the balls to face Martinez, especially if he picks Chavez apart?

Dan Rafael
  (1:17 PM)

Given the promotional differences, network differences (at least at the moment) and the fact that it is probably a mismatch at the moment, I would say no chance.

Alexandre (Montreal)

Dan, what happened to HBO's experiment of putting sensor's in boxer's gloves to see how hard they punch ?

Dan Rafael
  (1:19 PM)

Nothing happened to it. It is going to debut soon.

Charles (Ogden, Utah)

I haven't seen an actual date for the next episode of The Fight Game. Have you heard one?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

I am told Sept. 22.

Robert (San Diego, CA (America's Finest City))

Does the ESPN boxing page get more page views than the ESPN MMA/UFC page?

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

From what I am told, yes.

Jason (Philly)

What happened to "On Freddie Roach?"

Dan Rafael
  (1:23 PM)

Was one season, ran its course and was great. Now it's over.

Anthony (PA)

Dan, say Chavez Jr. and Canelo both arrive at a crowded 5 star restaurant in Mexico City on a Saturday night, who gets a table first?

Dan Rafael
  (1:25 PM)

Interesting question. If Chavez is with his daddy, I would say definitely Chavez.

hood (bronx)

Dan Rafael
