Chat with Jerry Crasnick

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:00 PM)

Hey everybody, We're 25 hours away from the trade deadline, so let's get started. If you see any news break during this chat, feel free to pass it along!

Jason (West Chester, PA)

Are any of the Rangers' prospects "untouchable", like Mike Olt, or are all of them in play, especially if Cliff Lee is on the table?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:01 PM)

Jason, I don't think there's any way the Rangers trade Jurickson Profar, since he's their next shortstop if Elvis Andrus leaves for free agency. They're pretty resistant to moving Olt, too, but I think they could be persuaded in the right deal.

Alex (Florida)

Jerry your thoughts on where Dempster will end up pitching? Braves/Dodgers back an forth on wanting him so is there a chance he stays with Cubs?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:03 PM)

Alex, I guess there's a chance Dempster stays. But he offers enough to contending clubs and the situation in Chicago is unpleasant enough for all sides that it's in everyone's best interests for a trade to be made. I've been waiting for teams like the Nats or Cardinals to jump in. Jayson Stark is now mentioning Washington as a possibility, so we'll see what happens.

Cargo (Denver)

Any chance I get traded by the deadline?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:04 PM)

Cargo, Nope, don't see that happening.

Pete (North Dakota)

I see the Pirates are shopping Kevin Correia. As a Pirates fan I am a little hesitant to get rid of him right now due to James McDonalds most recent performances. Any chance we keep him? Also any other trade deadline moves you see the Pirates making?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:05 PM)

Pete, I'm sure the Pirates would like the depth, but Correia asked for a trade once they moved him to the bullpen, and I think Neal Huntington is trying to accommodate him. They'd like a bat, but those Chase Headley and Shane Victorino pursuits haven't worked out to this point.

CC (Atlanta)

Any chance the Braves do something dramatic by 4pm tomorrow? We are so used to picking up junk like Matt Diaz at the deadline but we need a starting P to have any chance. Sheets and Hanson as top 3 starters ain't gonna cut it.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:07 PM)

CC, They were in on Greinke. Problem is, there's no real No. 1 left unless you count Cliff Lee. Josh Johnson isn't pitching very well (and would require half your farm system in return) and James Shields has a 6.15 ERA in his last seven starts. Are they any better than what the Braves have right now, particularly with the way Mike Minor is pitching?

Woody (Jefferson City, MO)

Given the theory of selling high, I was wondering what teams may be interested in Billy Butler? Oakland? Pittsburgh? Can he play 1B in the National League? Thanks for the chat!

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:08 PM)

Woody, I haven't heard Billy Butler's name at all. And no, I don't think anybody believes he can play first base. He's strictly a DH.

Kendall (NC)

Afternoon Jerry! My question concerns W.Miley! Do you think we'll see an innings limit on him and do you feel he'll fade in 2nd half with more inning pitched?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:10 PM)

Kendall, Wade Miley threw about 150 innings two years ago and 170 last season. He's at 118 right now, I believe, so he should have more tread on him. If he has any issues, they're probably more a result of going around the league for a second or third time than anything related to fatigue.

Goose (Philly)

Jerry,Do you see Hunter Pence being traded before the deadline ?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:10 PM)

Goose, I think it's going to be tough because of his salary. He has about $3M more due him this year and an additional $13M or more next year. That's not cheap.

keith (Ohio)

What about the possibility of Indians' Choo to the Pirates?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:11 PM)

Keith, The Choo rumors have been losing momentum. I can see the Indians wanting Starling Marte in return, and Neal Huntington would be hesitant to do that.

Bradley (Atlanta)

I keep hearing the Braves are "searching for starting pitching." Who would some of those names be at this point?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:12 PM)

Bradley, The ship hasn't completely sailed on Ryan Dempster, and I think they're keeping an eye on James Shields. But I'll bet they wind up getting a reliever and a bench bat before they get a starter.

Harrison (New York)

Hypothetical trade, the Mets Send David Wright and R.A Dickey to Texas for Olt, Profar, Derrick Holland and Josh Hamilton.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:13 PM)

Harrison, I take it you're a Mets fan.

Chris (Cincy)

Talk about the Reds! They are tied for the best record in baseball. Who will they get out of Span, Victorino, Pierre, Ellsbury?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:14 PM)

Chris, My guess is Juan Pierre. They've won 10 in a row and they have Joey Votto coming back, so I'm not sure they feel as great a sense of urgency to make a big trade. And I'm sure Dusty Baker is lobbying hard for Pierre, for what that's worth.

derrick (illinois)

What realistic moves do you see the dodgers making? left fielder? 1st base? and if so, who are they targeting?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:16 PM)

Derrick, I can see Shane Victorino being a good fit for both the Dodgers and Giants. Energy player who could turn it up a notch in August and September with a change of scenery. I think he winds up in one of those two places. Of course, the never-ending Ryan Dempster saga will also be coming to a conclusion soon. Thank goodness.

Kenny (Columbus)

Do you see the Chicago White Sox making a move before the trading deadline or staying with what they have? If they do make a move, who do you see them going for?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:17 PM)

Kenny, Kenny Williams has been quiet the last couple of days, but I expect him to make one more addition at the deadline. Maybe another veteran bullpen arm, like a Brandon League. That's just my guess.

Kurt (Pittsburgh)

What happened to the Justin Upton rumors? They ended as suddenly as they started?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:19 PM)

Kurt, I think they were overblown to begin with. And to be honest, I wonder why the D-backs threw around his name so casually. Upton has been on the block publicly twice now. It seems to me the D-backs might have a little fence-mending to do with him in the offseason if they're planning on keeping him for the long haul.

David (CT)

Do you see the Yankees making a deal for a backup 3rd baseman/utility infielder and if so who? What about pitching both starting and bullpen and if so who?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:20 PM)

David, They already have Eric Chavez and Jayson Nix, so I'm not sure who else they would target. And the Chase Headley thing didn't get very far. I don't see why Brian Cashman would feel the need to rush out and get a mediocre starter just for inventory.

Sean (Phoenix)

Hi Jerry, what's your take on the Dbacks trade for Chris Johnson? Do you think this is setting up another trade for the Dbacks on the infield?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:22 PM)

Sean, There's a lot of buzz that Stephen Drew is on his way out. I know they would love to move him. Bob Melvin, Oakland's manager, had Drew in Arizona, so I'm sure you'll be hearing about that connection until the deadline passes.

Ray (Texas)

What do you see as the biggest holdup to the Cliff Lee deal, Money owed, or prospects given?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:23 PM)

Ray, I talked to a couple of people today, and money and talent are both factors. This is a really big trade to try to pull off in a day or two. We'll get a better sense as the day progresses whether it's building any momentum.

Sam (Los Angeles)

Jerry, do you see any team taking a chance with Beckett? What sort of value would he have (depending on how much of the contract Boston eats of course)?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:24 PM)

Sam, Just from the scouts and people I've talked to today, he's not a real hot commodity. As usual, the more money the Red Sox are willing to eat, the better a return package they would get.

Chris (Cincy)

If the Reds land Pierre, who sits? Stubbs (CF) or Ludwick/Heisey (LF) platoon?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:26 PM)

Chris, Ryan Ludwick is a streak hitter who's been raking lately, so I don't think he sits much. Honestly, Juan Pierre is a great guy to have on your team. But I don't think the Reds regard him as an everyday player at this point. But he can lead off here and there, steal a base and chase down some fly balls. Just make sure the cutoff man is stationed way out there.

Eric (Chicago)

If a team trades for either Beckett or Josh Johnson...they deserve to lose and not make the playoffs. They are 2 mediocre pitchers and I don't care what Beckett has done in the past. We don't live in the past, baseball is a "what have you done for me lately" sport and they haven't done squat.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:28 PM)

Eric, That's a little harsh. They've both been very good at various stages of their careers, and Josh Johnson has the potential to still be very good. I just don't think he's healthy right now. Josh Johnson doesn't nibble at 91-92 mph when he's right.

Joe (hackensack)

Jerry, Does Lee's loyalty and taking less money to come to philly last year hold any weight in Amaro making a decision to trade him AGAIN!...i realize it is a business...but c'mon, the guy is a class act

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:29 PM)

Joe, Lee got $120M over 5 years, so I don't think the Phillies owe him anything. He doesn't have a complete no trade clause, so he knew there was a chance he could be moved when he signed the deal. I just wonder about the overall signal this sends. You sign one guy for $120M, then within a year you sign a second guy for $144M and try to trade the first guy? That doesn't sound like a very coherent plan.

Clay (Charlotte)

Do you see the Braves re-signing Bourn at the end of the year? How about McCann next year? Speedy CFs and slugging catchers don't usually age well.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:31 PM)

Clay, Great question. Michael Bourn is a Scott Boras guy, so I don't think he's going to do the Braves any favors. And the Braves have Christian Bethancourt in the minors, and they're wild about him as a catch-and-throw guy. I'm sure they'd love to keep McCann, but they're not going to go insane to make it happen.

Cheese (Washington, DC)

I think Kenny Williams may make a deal for a utility infielder to replace Escobar. Someone like Lillibridge. Many people forget, but one of the best pickups made during the 2005 WS run, is when the Sox got Geoff Blum right before the deadline.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:32 PM)

Cheese, Yeah, Kenny doesn't have anything big left in his arsenal, but he's pathologically incapable of doing nothing at the trade deadline.

Josh (Eagan)

What is Halladay's problem?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:33 PM)

Josh, Every scout and front office person I talk to thinks he's not healthy, and that he hasn't been healthy from the day he arrived at spring training. But he's such a gamer and a tough guy he keeps going out there. I'm sure the Phillies are hoping it's something that a winter of rest can cure. For their sake, it better be.

Jim (MN)

Have we seen the end of Sale's productivity?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:34 PM)

Jim, That's a little extreme, but the White Sox have been concerned about Sales' workload from day one. They're going to back off him at any sign of fatigue or soreness. He's going through the dog days now. We'll see how well he can fight through it.

Craig G. (Fairfield, CA)

Do you think Hunter Pence would be a god fit with the Giants? I'd love to see him come to the Bay.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:37 PM)

Craig, I'm sure you meant to say "good" fit, but that's a nice Freudian slip. Pence brings energy, and the Giants wouldn't mind his free-swinging approach. But they want to sign Melky to a long-term deal this winter, and I don't think they can afford Pence's $13M-plus price tag next year. Not to mention: It would be quite an adventure watching Hunter navigate those swirling winds at AT&T Park. Personally, I think Victorino is a better short-term fit for the Giants than Pence.

Tarek (NYC)

Jerry, Do you think the Rays can sneak into the last wildcard spot? I love Joe Maddon but his Offense is awful this year. I would love to see the wild card playoff game of Weaver vs Price.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:38 PM)

Tarek, They keep waiting for Evan Longoria to return and have an impact, but they still have a lot of issues. The defense has been bad this year, and that's very un-Rays like. But with two wild cards, they have a chance to be in it right to the end.

Joe (Green Bay)

Jerry, help me start the "Mike Fiers for NL Rookie of the Year" campaign! Leads NL Rookies in WAR and has been lights out for the Brewers.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:39 PM)

Joe, It's the least I can do. I'm sure you've suffered an awful lot having to watch that Brewers bullpen this season.

Steve (Illinois)

How long before we start hearing rumors of Matheny getting fired? I realize that's not the Cardinals' M.O. but man, how can a team leading the league in run differential be this bad?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:40 PM)

Steve, They've had a strange season, but let's give the guy a little time. I think there are quite a few managers ahead of Matheny in the "Hot Seat" parade.

Patrick (Pittsburgh)

Are the Royals going to unload Francoeur, Broxton, or Yuni? Can we get anything for them?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:41 PM)

Patrick, I expect them to move Broxton today or tomorrow. Francoeur and Yuni aren't generating much interest.

Jonathan (Detroit)

Will the Tigers make any more moves?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:43 PM)

Jonathan, I don't see them doing anything significant. They needed a second baseman and a starter, and they acquired them both in one fell swoop. They put a crimp in their minor league depth in the process. I think Dave Dombrowski is pretty much done.

Jim (PA)

Thoughts on Hanley in LA? Small sample size or taste of things to come with new scenery?

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:44 PM)

Jim, If the guy immediately tears it up there now after playing such uninspired ball for almost two years in Miami, it makes it a little tough to trust him, doesn't it? He's always had the talent, but you have to wonder about the rest of the package.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:45 PM)

I just have time for one more, folks. I believe we'll be doing a trade deadline Cover it Live tomorrow, so feel free to jump on with anymore questions.

Derek (St. Louis)

Have you heard anything from the Cards? I was hoping they could land a guy like Buehrle for the Starting Rotation.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:45 PM)

Derek, I know John Mozeliak is working a lot of angles to try to upgrade the pitching. As of yesterday I was told "nothing is imminent" with the Cardinals. But a lot can change in one day at this time of year.

Jerry Crasnick
  (3:46 PM)

Thanks again, everybody. Let's talk again soon.
