Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

MADE IT!!! Sorry all, I'll stay late cause i had some tech issues!

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

Lets GO!!!

Alex (Anaheim)

Can Piercy play more consistently going forward?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Absolutely. He is working on the one thing he struggles with the most... patience and attitude. And now that he's figured out how much better he can play when he keeps a calm head, the sky is the limit. Expect one more win from him this year.

Keith (Ohio)

How would you approach getting a kid started in the game: 8-10 yrs old? Would you try an approach that would minimize bad habits or does that matter at that age?

Michael Collins
  (3:21 PM)

At that age getting them started having fun hitting golf balls is the most important. Teach them how to hold the club and stand, after that see if they fall in love with it. Keep your fingers crossed, all it takes is one perfect shot. And encourage, encourage, encourage!

Dan (Kansas City)

Would you favor Paddy in Reno? Would you favor Tiger in Akron?

Michael Collins
  (3:23 PM)

Tiger has won Akron 7 times, it's the one place he will be comfy hitting driver. Betting favorite yes... but I don't think he'll win. Reno has always been a breakout place where guys get their first win. Expect a first timer to win there even with the new format.

Dan (Kansas City)

Are you in favor of the belly putter ban? I don't see it taking months the learn how to putt in the classic style, you?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

Yes, I'm in favor of banning it. All those guys that use it now didn't play with one as a kid when they started. Like riding a bike.

Jeff (Hoboken)

Michael, how will Tiger fare at Kiawah? The Pete Dye tracks have not been kind to him at majors

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

And this one won't be kind to him either, especially when the wind blows. He'll make the cut, but won't top ten.

Evan Almighty (Indy)

Can't wait for the PGA as I've been Kiawah a bunch and have played the Ocean Course. How will the Seashore Paspaulm greens, which is not too common, affect the players?

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I can't lie and say I've seen them before because this will be my first look at the course myself, but I expect by Thursday they'll have it figured out. Hard part is going to be trusting breaks and your caddie making great notes. I haven't heard how much different the grain is then bermuda.

Chioke Hassan (Baltimore,Md)

Dear Michael, Golf going to be at the Olympics in 2016?

Michael Collins
  (3:29 PM)

Yes, and if I'm very lucky... so will I!

g.p. (nd)

Michael, I know he's unpredictable, but when do you think we will see Phil bounce back?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

Next year... and that's optimistic. He may never be back. Health is a fickle thing in golf, and if he loses his touch and feel on the club, it's game over. Scary thought.

zachattack (Iowa)

Scott Piercy has been on a tear his last 3 tournaments. Is he now a legit contender every time he tees it up or just on a hot streak?

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

He's no joke. I saw it first hand but it's been his poor attitude that's held him back. He knew it and is fixing it (cause it's never completely fixed!) but the results are gonna make it easier for him to contend every week. The other thing is he believes he's a world class golfer, now he's proving it.

g.p. (nd)

You are obviously friendly with J.D. Is that just from knowing him over the years, or did you ever work for him, etc.?

Michael Collins
  (3:33 PM)

Never worked for him but from the first couple times we spoke, we hit it off. You know how it is when you meet someone and know you're gonna be friends right away, it was like that.

tdiddy (winnipeg) [via mobile]

I'm not sure why players feel compelled to complain about courses (unless they are latently unfair...like a few US Opens) they are playing. S Piercy thought the track in Canada was "boring" for som reason. Is this supposed to win him fans? Are we suppposed to care waht Scott Piercy thinks about a golf course? If he thought the course was boring he should have put his clubs in his trunk and went home. Your thoughts? Or am I making too much of this?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

Hang on a second... you want every golfer to give the standard PC, "It's a great rack.""Best shape it's ever been in""Greens are the best we've seen" lines? So you can what... call em liars and robots? Or would you rather have guys tell you what they really think? Give me the truth. I'm a big boy and can handle it if it ain't all sunshine and rainbows.

Ed (Long Island)

This week is a WGC event. Exactly what does that designation mean? We all understand the majors and regular tour events, not sure of the significance of a WGC? Who adminsters these events?

Michael Collins
  (3:38 PM)

World Golf Championships is what it stands for. What it was designed to do was to get the top guys in the world playing at a couple events a year for huge purses. Greg Norman came up with it first and was gonna do it himself, until the Tour squashed it as a bad idea... until they did it themselves! HAHA

Goldia (Charlotte)

Coming down to the end of the regular golf season. Your thoughts on who may be POY

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

That's SO tough because of how the majors have played out especially with Tiger having three wins.I'd say right now, he's still the favorite but let's see who wins the PGA first.

Jeff (Hoboken)

Dufner owns the Pete Dye courses right? Gotta like DJ as well in Kiawah?

Michael Collins
  (3:41 PM)

I wouldn't say he "owns" them, he still hasn't won the Players, but I like where you're thinking is going as far as those two guys being strong contenders there.

zachattack (Iowa)

MC, Do you think Stevie Williams should get some criticism for Adam Scott's failure down the stretch?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

Of course. It's a team game, as much as people want to deny it. And as helpless as Stevie must have felt coming down the stretch with Adam, you have to do or say anything to change where your man is going. He didn't do enough, BUT 99.9% of US wouldn't have done enough in that situation... and I include myself in that statement.

Nick (Canada)

Any word on whether Tiger has went to Kiawah to check it out yet?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

Haven't heard, but if he snuck over there early this week (like Sunday or Monday) I wouldn't be the least bit surprised. Even if his caddie Joe snuck out and did some recon work!

John (Naples)

I believe through injuries, age and other matters Tiger has fallen back to the field rather than the field catching him. I do not see any of the young guns who come close to playing at the level that Tiger did a few years ago. How do you see it?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

I see it as the field caught up. How many more guys started working out since Tiger? How many more kids that would've played other sports came to golf because of Tiger. Those "kids" are on tour now and can hit all the shots that before only Tiger would hit in tournaments.

Chip (Stees)

MC, you are going to be eating your words on August 12th win Tiger brings home #15.

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Is this the same guy that told me about the crow I was gonna eat when Luke Donald won the Open? Cause i still don't know what crow tastes like!

Chip (Stees)

why don't you like Tiger at Kiawah?

Shoshana (Boston)

Why don't you think Kiawah will be kind to TW? Will Kiawah require a lot of wedge play?

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

HAHA! Good one Shoshana. No I don't like him for the same reason he played bad on the weekend at the Open. He is going to have to hit driver or be 40 yards behind the guys he's trying to beat and he doesn't trust his driver. Can't win a major that way. Not even Tiger can.

zachattack (Iowa)

What did you think of Garrigus' comment that he should have won by 7 strokes. I read some people think it was kind of a jerk thing to say.

Michael Collins
  (3:53 PM)

Then those people didn't watch, and don't know how golfers think. We always hear guys say I left a lot of shots on the course today. Garrigus did all week. His putter, "Dr. Evil", was a no show when it counted. Maybe he should find a new super hero putter and let the villain go. He should know, the bad guys always lose! I didn't have a problem with his comments.

Jeff (Hoboken)

What happens in terms of raking the "bunkers" or sandy areas played as "through the green" at Kiawah? Do they still rake them if they make footprints?

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

Now you rake out of common courtesy but it is not required. Believe me, there are a few guys that'll get in some footprints and then tell their caddie, "Don't rake the next couple!" Usually a guy will get fined if the bunker is not raked correctly or if left un-raked.

Harry (Los Angeles)

Who wins at Kiawah and why

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

you're just going to have to wait for my expert picks for that one Harry. But check espn.com/golf and I promise it'll be there soon.

Billy (PDX)

Freddie finally wins an open! Can he compete next year @Muirfield?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Couples might just be the next Tom Watson when next year comes around at the Open Championship. Even though he's not as old as Tom the story would be pretty big if he can get in contention.

Jeff (Hoboken)

How many more wins for Tiger this year?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

If it ain't this week, then maybe Tour Championship in ATL. But I truly believe he's done winning for the year.

Chip (Stees)

For the record, no I never said that Luke "Short and Crooked" Donald would win the Open.

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Haha. Must've been another guy. My apologies. But I still won't be eating any crow on Sunday.

Woody (Washington, DC)

Who are the best 'wind' players on Tour?

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

Bring up all the Texas guys, the guys who live in Arizona, and throw in Bo Van Pelt from Oklahoma.

Michael Collins
  (4:01 PM)

Oh... and Vegas too!

John (Buffalo)

Why do you think that two of the best ever, Tiger and Phil, have always struggled to hit fairways off the tee?

Michael Collins
  (4:04 PM)

Because when they were dominating, back in the day, they'd only have wedges in to greens and they were deadly with them even out of the rough. Also, when the missed the fairway, they missed BIG so they usually had a shot to the green and a clean lie. Now they don't miss as big and it puts them in worse spots.

g.p. (nd)

As of now, who do you think will end up short of ryder cup qualifications and be the captains picks?

Michael Collins
  (4:05 PM)

The one guy I really think won't qualify on points will be Furyk, but if there's one guy who in match play just will not be beat it's Jim. Gotta have him on the team.

Dave (Washington, DC)

Ocean Course is a great course and looking forward to watching on TV, but surprised it got a major. With the heat and lack of trees and logistics can't help but think its not a great spectator course. thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (4:07 PM)

This will be my first trip but from everyone I've talked to, getting to/from the course is gonna be a NIGHTMARE. It can't be any worse a spectator walk than the Open was this year. And I still say Kohler, WI was the worst for spectators I've ever seen in person. Ask me again next week when I get there.

Ken (Moseley, VA)

To your point regarding the reno-tahoe and first timers, I was leaning towards Sung-Yul Noh, but couldn't pass up JB Holmes in that Stablefored format with his eagle/birdie percentages. Your thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (4:09 PM)

I'd take Holmes but only by a slim margin. Noh has been so solid all year, only thing that makes me hesitate with him is the altitude adjustment. Hard the first time you're there to get used to.

lk@walnutstreettheatre.org (Philadelphia)

can Freddie Couples win, or at least contend, on the PGA Tour again?

Michael Collins
  (4:10 PM)

yes, but only on certain courses like Riviera. It's just getting harder for him to do four straight rounds of comp with that back of his

Loyd (san antonio)

if tiger had his best week driving the ball at the ocean course would you pick him?

Michael Collins
  (4:12 PM)

if he had his best week driving, he'd be done before I picked him. But going in to the week, I don't trust his driver yet, so he could hit 2 irons all day in the fairways... can't win at Kiawah doing that though.

Ken (Moseley, VA)

Don't forget about Rickie's play in the wind (Okie St)!!

Michael Collins
  (4:12 PM)

Good point!!

Brian (Raleigh)

Isn't it funny how polarizing a conversation about Tiger can be? His fans go nuts if anything is said that doesn't have something to do with how great he is. Then there are those that can't stand for anything nice to be said about him.

Michael Collins
  (4:14 PM)

Welcome to my world! I've been called a Tiger lover and a racist (I'm half black) in the same chat! Haha... sad but true.

Ken (Moseley, VA)

I am getting sooo clooose to losing all of my faith in Double D. Give me some legitimate reasons not to.!

Michael Collins
  (4:15 PM)

He's still got game. He's just trying to "unlearn" all the bad habits that have buried themselves in him. It's a very deep hole, but I still believe he can get out. I haven't given up on him.

Jim (NY, NY)

Don't agree with you on the field vs. Tiger. At the time of his incident no one else was over 10 avg pts. in the OWGR, same as now. 10th place in the rankings has only gone up slightly from 5.07 to 5.4 pts. His fellow competitors are achieving at a very similar rate as they did in '09.

Michael Collins
  (4:19 PM)

Yes but the separation between Tiger and the field when he was number one was much more than Luke Donald or the others that have had #1, that's because the field is better.

Shoshana (Boston)

Does draw matter more this yr at Kiawah then it did at The Open

Michael Collins
  (4:21 PM)

Well we didn't see significant wind at the Open til Sunday. SO I have to believe draw at Kiawah will matter more.

John (Naples)

Who is the worst putter with the long putter; Garrigus or Singh?

Michael Collins
  (4:21 PM)

Singh, but if Garrigus sticks with the long putter he could pass Vijay as the worst.

Brint (Wichita)

Michael, what's your favorite course that you've ever played?

Michael Collins
  (4:25 PM)

Got to play the Plantation Course at Kapalua the day after the tournament! Don't know that I'd wanna play it everyday but it was pretty good. Don't know that I have a "favorite", I've played some pretty amazing tracks. I'm a VERY lucky guy. Still plenty on the bucket list though. How about this... I haven't played my favorite course yet!I like that answer the best!!!

Doug (GA)

Michael, you won't believe how brutal it will be to get to Kiawah. Navigating Kohler is like navigating Atlanta compared to the SC barrier islands.

Michael Collins
  (4:28 PM)

Then there better be earmuffs for all the children within a 20 mile radius of where the shuttle picks us up and drops us off. I'm not a morning person and if it takes more than an hour to get to work because of traffic I'm gonna need a "BLEEP" button! HAHA

Brint (Wichita)

What's #1 on the bucket list? Augusta?

Michael Collins
  (4:28 PM)

OH YEAH!

Michael Collins
  (4:30 PM)
