Chat with Dan Graziano

Buzzmaster
  (12:08 PM)

Hang on folks. Dan's at Redskins camp and it looks like he got delayed a bit. He'll be here shortly.

Dan Graziano
  (12:14 PM)

Hey, apologies for the delay. I am here now and ready to rock and/or roll.

Mitch (Rockville)

How much does it appear RG3 is stepping up as a leader and showing some leadership? Are the coaches holding his hand or are they expecting him to act like the starter both on and off the field?

Dan Graziano
  (12:15 PM)

There's no question who the quarterback is. The coaches are giving him a full workload as the starter, and his teammates are impressed with him in the locker room and in the huddle. Chasing down the linebacker from 80 yards away yesterday to prevent a practice touchdown off a fumble is the kind of thing that likely helps.

Dino (Skins Nation)

Did you meet Wale too? At Redskins camp?

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

Is there something wrong with me that I still don't know who that guy is?

Josh (Stuck at Work)

While I know there is a ton of positive news coming from the Eagles TC, (besides the two main injuries) I have heard next to nothing about Demeco Ryans, Have you heard anything? Is he just solid and not standing out? Someone to watch when you visit Lehigh, for a closer look.

Dan Graziano
  (12:16 PM)

I will check it out when I get to Lehigh tomorrow morning, but my guess is that no news is good news.

Paul (San Diego)

Dan,Losing Thomas hurts, good player and even better guy. Am I wrong to think the Giants will survive this (similar to last year;s acl purging with Hixon, Goff, Witherspoon, Thomas and Sintim)...Prince should only improve with time; having KP helps, and I am excited to see if Hosley can win the slot corner job...Sunny in Albany?

Dan Graziano
  (12:17 PM)

I think the Giants are well positioned to survive the loss of Terrell Thomas, assuming he is lost. And after last year, yes, you have to give them the benefit of the doubt. Lots of pressure on Amukamara as next man up.

Yatin (LA)

Are Andy and Marty ready to hand off some responsibility to Dion Lewis or whoever wins the backup RB job? The team has invested a ton of $ into Shady, and they have to be concerned about the risks of injury or over-using him, right?

Dan Graziano
  (12:17 PM)

I think Lewis (or whoever wins that job) will have to show A LOT for the coaches to want to take the ball out of LeSean McCoy's hands even a little.

Will (Fort Myers)

What does it mean that the Giants 1st round pick is working with the 3rd team in practice? Is the learning curve that steep or is there another issue.

Dan Graziano
  (12:18 PM)

I think that's just how the Giants structure things. If you're a rookie, you have to work your way up from the bottom of the roster. Nothing to say he can't do that quickly, though.

Justin (South Jersey)

Any good interviews today?

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

Nothing too great today. Spoke with Pierre Garcon, Alfred Morris and Maurice Hurt after practice. Interesting stuff, nothing earth-shattering. More interviews after the afternoon practice, including my time with Mike Shanahan.

Tim (Columbia, Md)

on your way up 95 to PA, exit on rt 100 east, then exit to snowden river parkway. you will see a place called Vitoria's Gastro Pub just ahead on the left. It's pricey, but you should eat there.

Dan Graziano
  (12:19 PM)

I wasn't going to go 95. Should I?

Nick (Vermont)

Do you think the injuries to Brown and Lichtensteiger will prompt any "I told you so" commentary towards Mike Shanahan after he chose Cousins in the 4th round instead of a possible starting RT?

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

Yes, that was my first reaction.

Dave (Sacramento)

Does Pierre Garcon look like a #1 receiver to you, from your 1 day at skins practice

Dan Graziano
  (12:20 PM)

He definitely LOOKS like one. Big. Strong. Fast. Knows his routes. I can see what the Redskins liked. Question is how it translates into games.

Nerns (Maryland)

Any clues as to who the Skins are leaning towards at the Safety positions based on practice?

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Meriweather and Williams were the first team safeties yesterday. But Tanard Jackson isn't allowed to practice until tomorrow because he just came off PUP. So he could still get into the mix.

Dan Graziano
  (12:21 PM)

Just an FYI here, almost every question in the queue is a Redskins one. I'm looking through to pick ones about other teams, but they're hard to find. And I haven't seen one yet about the Cowboys. Please chime in if you want to talk about something non-Redskins.

Will (Fort Myers)

Do you expect Wilson to get the number 2 RB position for week 1? or maybe later in the season?

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

I would guess later in the season is more likely. But it really is an open competition, and still early.

Taylor Jacobs (Washington, DC)

Wait, what do you mean "translates into games?"

Dan Graziano
  (12:22 PM)

I mean, it's easier to look good in practice than it is when another team's out there trying to stop you.

st8prop (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, what's more likely to happen FIRST:1. Herzlich starting at Mike2. Hosely starting at the slot corner3. Wilson spelling Bradshaw4. Randle getting the 3rd WR spot

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

I think 4. But with yesterday's news, watch out for 2.

Nick (Vermont)

You're at Redskins camp Dan! We are going to swarm you with Skins questions

Dan Graziano
  (12:23 PM)

And that's fine. Just want to make sure people know why the chat is tilted that way -- i.e. because all of the questions are.

K (philly)

Graham is getting babin's reps due to the injury. let us know how he looks. Is he actually making something of whats a last opportunity or is he a full out bust.

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

The only reason Graham is a bust so far is because he hasn't been healthy. We haven't see whether he can play, because he hasn't been on the field. So the jury's still out.

Charle (Waterloo)

You wrote in a recent piece and in it said that Dallas fans might be getting impatient with Romo. Do you think that Dallas fans really feel like Romo isn't good enough, or is that everyone else making that noise?

Dan Graziano
  (12:24 PM)

I think there are a few vocal Dallas fans who are dissatisfied with Romo, but in general I think most Cowboys fans like the guy and appreciate how good he is.

Dan Jr. (Memphis Tn,)

How did Marvin Austin look in Giants camp.

Dan Graziano
  (12:25 PM)

Looked fine. I didn't see him do anything that stood out. But it can be tough to judge that position, if only because it can be hard to see what they're up to in there from where we stand on the sidelines. He worked with the second-team D line while I was there.

Angry Mike (SF, CA)

What do you know about the Cowboys, that you didn't know one week ago?

Dan Graziano
  (12:26 PM)

That Felix Jones, Andre Holmes and Brodney Pool are out of shape?

Dino (Skins Nation)

Doesnt Trent Williams seem like he finally "understands" that practice makes u better? He seems like he is more focused.

Dan Graziano
  (12:27 PM)

I actually talked with Shanahan about him for a minute before the morning walkthrough, and he says he sees a difference. He says he told Williams, "I'm never going to compliment you again. Even if you're doing great, I'm going to be on your ass."

peter (maine)

Dan, you are forced into a fight with an NFC east player, who would you most and least want your opponent to be?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

I would run away, regardless.

Jae (Cali)

is Claiborne that bad, or is Dez that good?

Dan Graziano
  (12:28 PM)

Dez is very good. Sounds like he had some fun with the rookie Monday. Rookies all struggle at some point, usually at the beginning. The NFL is a difficult league in which to play.

st8prop (Atlanta, GA)

Dan....Via NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, Jones promised the Cowboys crowd he was looking forward to "beating the Giants' *explicit language*" this season.Your thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

Jerry knows how to work a crowd.

Gene (DC)

You'd run away from the kicker?

Dan Graziano
  (12:29 PM)

I am not a very large person.

Mike (Philly)

Cliff Harris has been getting rave reviews at Eagles Camp... any chance you think he pushes Boykin or Hanson?

Dan Graziano
  (12:30 PM)

Yeah, his issues were off-field, right? He's got some big talent.

Reed (Jefferson Memorial)

Who do you think is over hyped fantasy player out of the Beast I should avoid... Gotta get the team right...

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

The answer is David Wilson, because I've seen some previews that have him sharing carries with Bradshaw. And we don't know if ANYONE will share carries with Bradshaw or if they'll just be his backup. And even then, we don't know if Wilson can be the guy. So that's why I say him, not because I don't think he can play, but because I think the fantasy previews are generally assuming too much about his role.

Chase (Orlando)

Hey Dan! So glad I can finally make a chat. I'm usually working but not today! WOO HOO! Anyway my question is do you believe the Redskins Offensive line can come together to protect RG3? Or will I have to close my eyes each time I see a blitz? Hope you're having fun at Redskins training camp and as alyways HTTR.

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

After yesterday, I came away believing the offensive line is going to be a very big problem for them.

Splooz (SLC)

Has the Danny shown up yet and if so is he speaking to the media this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:31 PM)

Low profile.

Brent (New Hampshire)

Sav Rocca is listed at 6'5, 265. I bet Gene would run from him.

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

And anyone who's ever seen Steve Weatherford up close wouldn't mess with him either.

Chad (Fort Worth)

You would run away from Brandon Banks? He is like 5-5 a buck 30...

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

Yeah, and he could easily catch me. Might have to employ a different strategy there.

Dan Graziano
  (12:32 PM)

Yeah, and he could easily catch me. Might have to employ a different strategy there.

CHRIS (CT)

How does Hightower look? Will he be the starter?

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

He's not doing anything at all in practice these two days. Long way to go before he's healthy enough to be the starter.

Gene (DC)

Was Snyder around much last year? My sense has been that he's kept a very low profile in the ShanAllen era. Not sure if that's a statement on them or on the previous regime.

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

I think you are correct.

Dan Graziano
  (12:33 PM)

And I think it's part of his agreement with Shanahan.

Matt (Atlanta, GA)

Dan, from what I've been reading RG3 has had trouble rolling out to his left in camp so far. It's understandable since his dominant side would be right, but is this an area for concern? I know it's early but if teams can just concentrate on containing the right side then that would diminish his ability to scramble it seems (like what used to happen with Vick sometimes).

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

It is too early to be concerned about something like this, in my opinion. Rookie is learning, as they all must.

Garrett (DC)

Being at training camp today for the skins. Who would you say was the running back not only getting the most reps but looking most likely to be shanahans favorite start? Or is it still a crap shoot?

Dan Graziano
  (12:34 PM)

Wide-open competition. Honestly, yesterday, I thought Royster looked the best.

Corey (Fantasy Land)

How good can we expect Fred Davis to be with RG3? Numbers-wise

Dan Graziano
  (12:35 PM)

I think his numbers are going to be through the roof.

Dan (Washington, DC)

Why are people so worried about the Skins O-line but giving players like Clairborne a pass? Training Camp isn't even a week old!

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Well, there's a difference between an already-questionable line being down two starters with no great options to replace them and a rookie having a rough day in his first-ever NFL practice. There's more reason to believe Claiborne will ultimately look better than the Redskins' line will.

Tim VB [via mobile]

Any chance DaRel Scott makes a run for rb2 in NY? Is he out classed at this level?

Dan Graziano
  (12:37 PM)

Definitely a chance. Haven't seen enough to know if he's "out-classed."

Corey (Fantasy Land)

Will Romo have another good year? Assuming Austin is healthy and Bryant refrains from beating siblings?

Dan Graziano
  (12:38 PM)

Yes, and don't forget Witten. Questions in the middle of that offensive line still, but he managed just fine in spite of that last year.

st8prop (Atlanta, GA)

Dan...I heard Will Hill is looking quite impressive in camp.. you think even with Thomas going down it will negate bringing Grant back?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

Yeah, I don't think it's a sure thing that Grant comes back. Remember, Thomas wasn't the only CB injury they had last year. Far from it. As long as they don't start dropping like flies, they can get by with what they have. Their added depth at LB also reduces the need for that third safety.

Mark (CT)

It seems that Jernigan has had a good couple practices so far for the GMEN. I know its early but if he wins the 3rd WR spot do you expect him to play slot or Cruz?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

I think they're looking for that WR3 to play the outside so they can keep Cruz in the slot where he dominates.

Erik (IL)

Hearing Dez, Claiborne, Austin and Ware teaching each other about routes and defensive packages makes me feel like this Dallas team is really "growing" into its own. I like when players talk to eachother because I feel like that helps build morale when your hearing it from your peers rather than a coach. Thoughts?

Dan Graziano
  (12:39 PM)

I agree with you. They need to develop and foster that kind of environment in their locker room. It's a good sign.

skooler (on top of the mountain)

any news on T2's (Terrell Thomas) knee?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

I got nothing, but I haven't been on Twitter or really checked e-mail since about 10:45. Redskins won't let us use phones during walkthrough, and I came right here from there.

Drew (DC)

Do you know if Fred Davis is handling anymore cases?

Dan Graziano
  (12:40 PM)

Why? You want to hire him?

Tim VB [via mobile]

Are the 'Boys replacing Costa at center? Those early snap replays were hilarious

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

I think he could lose his job to Nagy or Bernadeau, possibly.

Boris (Denver, CO)

what kind of year statistically are you expecting out of Trent Cole?

Dan Graziano
  (12:41 PM)

I expect a lot out of Trent Cole, who is one of the best players in the league.

John (Avon)

Any news on who has the edge in the Cowboys' safety training camp battle? It seems like Church has the edge.

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

Probably, since Pool can't pass the conditioning test and Matt Johnson is a mid-round rookie.

skooler (at the beach)

while you were @ Giants camp, did any off-radar players stand out to you?

Dan Graziano
  (12:42 PM)

I thought Coe looked decent at CB.

Fiversons (Skinsville NC)

With Brown being on the PUP and possibly missing parts of the season. Who do you see as the starting RT game 1? Polumbus is getting first team reps, but do you think a guy like Smith or Compton have a shot? Thanks Dan....

Dan Graziano
  (12:43 PM)

Yes, I think those guys would have a shot.

Nick (Vermont)

Make sure you ask Mike Shanahan about the o-line shuffle already, the RT situation and the Kirk Cousins selection please.

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

I asked him about Cousins when I was here in June for minicamp. He said, "How often do you get a quarterback you like in the fourth round?" and basically said he thinks he can develop him as a backup and have him around in case he needs a good backup or someone wants to trade for him.

Caz (Dallas )

What's the scoop on Church? I thought he couldn't cover?

Dan Graziano
  (12:44 PM)

Whoever wins that starting spot in Dallas will be a flawed player.

Richard (Roanoke, Va)

Any chance the 'Skins try to grab a replacement for the o-line before the start of the season, or do they hope what's is there works?

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

They signed this guy Jordan Black. I don't think there's much out there.

Hanson (DC)

Try to remember while at camp no matter how bad this chat gets at least you don't have to deal with 1287 Tebow questions.

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

Amen.

Dan Graziano
  (12:45 PM)

Pun intended.

Splooz (SLC)

Was Sirius Black not available?

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

And the Dorkiest Question Award goes to...

Phil (Hauppauge)

Are the Giants better without Jacobs? Yeah he's big but he seemed to have lost his toughness.

Dan Graziano
  (12:46 PM)

I think people are underrating the contribution Jacobs made last year, and I do not think they're automatically better without him. We have yet to see if any of these other guys can play.

Splooz (SLC)

Says the dweeb who got the joke...

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

Ah, touche!

Matthew (DC)

Was Jarvis Jenkins showing explosion? And if so, more or less than the other DE's?

Dan Graziano
  (12:47 PM)

No, no defensive end has exploded yet. I promise I'd have written about that.

Tex (Dallas)

Will Cowboys let Murray take more then 70% of snaps this year?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

If he's healthy all year, yeah, I think he gets a heavy workload.

Splooz (SLC)

Any chance you'll get us an update on the kicker battle in DC?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

I've not been watching it. Will take a look this afternoon, since you insist.

Jon C. (Texas)

Can you answer just 1 of my questions?

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

Sure!

Nick (Raleigh)

Hard to predict injury obviously, but do you see Griffin doing the things he needs to learn to do (slide, run out of bounds, etc) to protect himself? Besides him panning out, injury is obviously the #1 concern for us fans...

Dan Graziano
  (12:48 PM)

Yeah, I think he's smart as hell and will keep the big picture in mind.

Nick (Vermont)

Man I get so pissed when you make a joke out of a question I want answered...but when you do it to other people, I laugh.

Dan Graziano
  (12:49 PM)

This says something about you, but I have no idea what.

Dino (Skins Nation)

Dont you think Raheem will really help out the secondary?

Dan Graziano
  (12:49 PM)

I mean, yeah, that's his job. He's the secondary coach. If he doesn't help them, then what's he here for?

Mike (Doing Homework)

What can you comment on the character of the young players that Shanahan has drafted the past two years? All seem to be very hard working, humble, driven players. Groundwork for a strong future?

Dan Graziano
  (12:50 PM)

Talking Griffin, Kerrigan, the running backs, Jenkins... yeah, I think that matters to Shanahan. I think he weighs that when deciding who to pick, along with other factors.

Jon C. (Texas)

Who's going to emerge as the starting TE for the Giants? Please answer just 1 real question of mine then I'll shut up.

Dan Graziano
  (12:51 PM)

Jerry Reese told me they got Martellus Bennett to help them in the run game as a blocker. Now, does that mean he comes off the field on passing downs? And if so, does that make him the starter or someone else? I think he's the answer to your question, but I think it's important to remember that the Giants don't throw a high percentage of passes to their tight ends, compared to other teams in the league.

BJH (Ohio)

I've seen Fred Davis slipping in fantasy drafts, is he someone I can get on the cheap who's going to produce? Have you seen any chemistry between him and RG3?

Dan Graziano
  (12:52 PM)

Yeah. I hope he slips in my fantasy drafts, because I think he's going to have a monster year.

Ben (Washington, DC)

Dan, come on. People are underrating Jacobs' contributions last year? Yes we have to see people like Ware, Scott, Brown and Wilson step up, but don't pretend like the national media wasn't hand wringing Jacobs' abilities all last year.

Dan Graziano
  (12:53 PM)

I can't answer for something as large and vague as "the national media," but (a) the Giants' problems in the run game last year were more the fault of the line than the backs and (b) Jacobs is judged too harshly in general, because people always expected him to just blow up the line of scrimmage because of his size. He played fine last year, given the limitations of the team's overall run game. And he had a ton more experience in the league and the offense than any of these guys do.

Splooz (SLC)

When you dip out of Ashburn and you're stuck in bumper to bumper traffic between DC and Philly...what's your go to tunes on the ipod to keep from going bonkers?

Dan Graziano
  (12:53 PM)

"Call me Maybe"

skooler (poolside)

so JJ told fans at the opening of Boys Camp; "Y'all should come to Cowboys Stadium and watch us beat the Giants' asses". was he joking, Eli's undefeated at Meadowlands south.

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

Again, man was playing to the crowd. Was talking to fans. He's said dumber stuff. Just this week, in fact...

Nick (Vermont)

You're sick.

Dan Graziano
  (12:54 PM)

Hey, I just met you. And this is craaaazy....

Shirley, NY [via mobile]

Isn't there reason for optimisim in Dallas considering they had leads in about 6 games in the fourth quarter and upgraded a shakey secondary ?

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

Yeah, but I still think they needed to upgrade at some other positions and did not. Those would include safety, defensive end, guard and center. Be as optimistic as you like, I'm withholding judgment for now.

Nick (Raleigh)

Avoid 95 to Lehigh if you're going during the day. Will hit traffic in DC, BMore, and Philly. If going tonight, I would take 95. Stop at Mama's Pizzeria off of City Line Ave for the best cheesesteak on the planet. Thank me later, call me maybe.

Dan Graziano
  (12:55 PM)

Probably won't be on the road much before 8 pm, so 95 is the way to go? I wasn't even considering it.

Dino (Skins Nation)

Being that next year Skins are moving training camp make sure you shed some tears for Redskins Park and tell Residence inn they SUCK! #HTTR

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

Residence Inn easily delivered the weakest performance of camp.

Justin (South Jersey)

Does pumping your own gas make you miss NJ?

Dan Graziano
  (12:56 PM)

Yes! Hate the smell of that crap on my hands.

Splooz (SLC)

Best watering hole in Georgetown...besides St. Elmo's

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

There's no St. Elmo's. The place is called The Tombs, and it looks exactly the same as it did when I was in school there 20 years ago. Jesus, 20 years?

Nick (Vermont)

You haven't forgotten the Ryan Kerrigan interview have you?

Dan Graziano
  (12:57 PM)

He's on my list!

Tory (DC)

Are you going to get a chance to interview RG3 and provide us with the blogger's all important perception?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

Young man is doing no one-on-one interviews, I am told by the team. Just the weekly press conferences, which are fun.

Jason (DC)

What were you going to take? 15N?

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

Yeah, 15N to 78. No good?

Josh (Stuck at Work)

Dan, Forget 95 and take the company helicopter! Arrive in style.

Dan Graziano
  (12:58 PM)

We can all dream...

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Really, having a helicopter would solve so many problems.

Tory (DC)

yeah, they are shielding him (RG3) well, so he can focus ... and he likes that.

Dan Graziano
  (12:59 PM)

Yes, I can understand their reasoning.

shu (texas)

do yall really get gas pumped for you in jersey? thats interesting

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Yes. By Playboy models in bikinis. New Jersey is the best-kept secret in the world. Stay away. It's ours.

Ivan (Texas)

My traveling tip of the day: When you head to Oxnard for Cowboys camp, take a plane.

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Thanks, Magellan!

Chris (My Desk)

In an effort to educate you on hip-hop, Wale is DC's best hip-hop artist. Worth a listen if you like that stuff... Back to football. Who do you think wins out the back up RB spot behing Lesean McCoy?

Dan Graziano
  (1:00 PM)

Thanks. Dion Lewis.

Matt (DC)

Let's not forget the Skins got their cap KILLED on the eve of free agency. Pretty sure some of those dollars were going towards the OL.

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

I believe that is correct.

Eric (VA) [via mobile]

Eli is undefeated at New Meadowlands? I seem to recall a miracle and a VY come back that would disagree.

Dan Graziano
  (1:01 PM)

Commenter was saying Eli is undefeated in Dallas' new stadium. Not the Giants'

skooler (on a beer run)

any chance Hynoski is the odd man out if Gillbride decides to utilize both Ballard and Bennett on the flats and check downs?

Dan Graziano
  (1:02 PM)

No, because Ballard isn't on the team.

Mr. W (Dallas)

two eagles questions all day...smh c'mon man!

Dan Graziano
  (1:02 PM)

I can't write the questions myself!

Dan Graziano
  (1:03 PM)

I'm out, folks. Next week, chat will come to you live from Cowboys training camp or possibly not at all. I promise to keep you posted.
