Thanks for stopping by to chat. I'm at Browns headquarters where practice begins at 2 p.m. I will try to answer as many questions as possible before I have to dart out. Let's kick it off.
Unlike Little last year, Gordon was allowed to practice with Utah during his suspension. Not to mention Gordon will have almost a full offseason with the team, which Little also did not get. That being said, should we expect Gordon to be less rusty than and to out perform Little's rookie season? And is he already ahead of where Little started camp last season?
I think everyone should expect some rust on Gordon. Practice is one thing, but playing in a competitive game is another. Little's rookie season output is a reasonable goal for Gordon. Remember A.J. Green was the best rookie receiver in the NFL last season, and he didn't catch 90 passes or score a dozen touchdowns. It takes a while for receivers to get adapted to the NFL. And I will let you know where Gordon stands after I see him on the field for a couple of days.
With the addition of Jacoby Jones, and Torrey Smith having a year of NFL experience under his belt, could this be the year that Joe Flacco heads for "elite" QB numbers?
The progression of Torrey Smith will be a big boost for Flacco. Not sure about the addition of Jacoby Jones. He dropped a lot of passes in minicamp, and that's been the weak spot throughout his career.
In your opinion, who owns the best secondary in the AFC North?
Baltimore has the best corners in the division. Pittsburgh has the best safeties.
I don't understand why Leon Hall was not in your top 25? He will be healthy by the time the season starts and he is clearly the best corner in the division.
Hall's injury status weighed heavily in the decision. I know by saying this, everyone will bring up Suggs being No. 15. But there is a difference between Suggs, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and Hall. If it was known that Hall would be 100 percent for the season opener, he would have been included in the top 25.
According to NFL.com, the Ravens have been practicing a spread offense in camp lately. Could this be a legitimate way for the offense to go more often?
The only way a spread offense works is if you have enough wide receivers to do this. Not sold on the Ravens wide receivers right now beyond Boldin and Smith.
Besides the rookie starters, where do you see weaknesses in the Browns projected lineup? Besides LB I don't see the low rankings being justified.
Right guard, defensive tackle (with Phil Taylor being injured), outside linebacker and free safety (although Hagg seems to exceeding expectations at this spot). And, as you said, four rookie starters can be a little scary.
If JImmy Haslam buys into the Browns, please tell me that he'll have to sell this share of the Steelers. He's already been a fan of a couple of other teams, and doesn't deserve to be associated with the Black and Gold
Haslam would have to sell his estimated 5 to 10 percent in the Steelers if he buys the Browns. Now, slowly back away from the ledge.
Die hard browns fan....if T. Rich and the browns o line can move the ball this yr and keep defense off the field for a chance, how good can they be? and do you see them making a push for a wildcard?
Let's not have playoff talk for the Browns until they win a game in the division. And, like you pointed out, a good running game would be a big help to the Browns defense, which was on the field way too long last season. If it plays out like this, the Browns could surprise some teams.
What are you hearing about Marvin Jones for the Bengals?. He seems to be a special talent and lining up across from Green should bring nightmares to the rest of the AFCN
When Marvin Lewis talks about the competition for the No. 2 WR job, he mentions Brandon Tate, Mohamed Sanu and Armon Binns. That tells me that Marvin Jones is going to be brought along slowly. I did hear good things about him this offseason. I will see the Bengals first-hand next week.
Jamison - I'm glad to see Lerner finally selling the team after a number of years of poorly hired coaches and staff. Of course the sale had to happen when the team is finally generating momentum. What are the best and worst case scenarios for the likely Browns sale? Will we at least keep Heckert, a GM who actually knows what he's doing?
The key is whether former Eagles executive Joe Banner comes along in the deal. I've heard conflicting reports about Banner's relationship with Heckert. Some say Heckert left on good terms, while others say otherwise. As Heckert said this week, no one knows how everything will sort out in the ownership change.
The Steelers seem to be stuck in the low 20's in relation to points per game the last several years. This keeps them, most often, middle of the pack in that category. With the report that the Steelers are planning to make the no- huddle a big part of their offense, do you see this finally making them one of the top scoring offenses in the league?
Everyone in the Steelers organization would be disappointed if the offense failed to rank in the top half of league in scoring this year. That's what Haley was brought in to do.
Outside of Weeden, how are the other Browns QBs doing at camp?
Will have more to report after I watch practice from 2 to 4:30. I talk to Shurmur and players after that.
Is Buster Skrine a quality corner or just a cool name?
He certainly has the speed. But Skrine was inconsistent when I watched minicamp.
What is Sanu's fantasy value in deep ppr leagues?
Not great value yet. He still hasn't secured a starting job. Sanu has to beat out Brandon Tate and Armon Binns.
Buster needs to stay away from the PI penalties
As rookie starters go, how are the OT's in Pittsburgh coming along?
Right now, Mike Adams is working with the second team. But he will be in the mix at starting left tackle. It will come down to Max Starks' health and Adams' progression.
Will there be another division shakeup in the Writers blogging the divisions at ESPN like last year? It would be sad. I felt you were very evenhanded last year.
Not that I know of. I'm on board for the AFC North this year.
If the Bengals wind up in second place, capitalizing on last season's steps forward, who do you see them overtaking; the Steelers or Ravens?
Ravens. The loss of Suggs and the difficulties with McKinnie are real problems.
How may touchs for Richardson a game?
Because he is a rookie, his touches will be less at the start of the regular season. I think 20 to 25 carries in addition to a couple of catches should be the norm for him.
With Kindle healthy and now in the mix how do you think he does this year? Will he show any of the skills that he was drafted for or do you think his head injury is to much to overcome?
I want to see what Kindle can do in preseason games. He has a problem with his hearing since the accident, which is a big hurdle for him. Not sure he'll ever be the player that the Ravens drafted in the second round.
Will you come visit me & my brother in law during the Browns/Steelers game on November 25th in Cleveland? We will be in section 144
I have no problem meeting outside the stadium for a quick chat before the game. I typically get to the games two hours before kickoff.
Who do you think has the best D-Line in the division?
I really like the Bengals' line, especially if Dunlap can become a starter.
How in the world did Cleveland miss out on RGIII in the draft? What an oops!
Holmgren said the Browns were aggressive in their pursuit of him. Obviously not aggressive enough.
How would you rank the Browns run defense this year?
Not very good as long as Phil Taylor is sidelined and there's no improvement at outside linebacker.
rookie who makes the biggest impact in the AFCN this year?
Trent Richardson. Not even close.
How do you see the matchup between the AFCN and NFCE playing out this year? Would love to see the people who think the NFCE is the best division in football eat some crow.
How the AFC North fares against the NFC East will determine whether one or two teams out of this division makes the playoffs. The AFC North was helped last year by playing the lackluster NFC West.
The running back will have a bigger impact then the rookie QB
Why do you think the Browns drafted Richardson at No. 3 and not Weeden at that spot?
How many points do you think the Browns will average per game this year with its new offense?
Has to be more than last year. It really can't get worse than last year.
Who would you pick #1 in a points per reception fantasy league, Ray Rice, Arian Foster, or Lesean McCoy?
If you saw how I fared in fantasy football, you would ask someone else those questions.
If you were building a team right now, how many wide receivers are there in the nfl that you would take over AJ Green? This is not a fantasy football question. I'm talking in terms of building an actual team.
Off the top of my head, Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald.
hey jamison, why didnt you rank andy dalton in your top 25?
Because he wouldn't make my top 30.
So with James Harrison getting up in age and who do you see as his potential replacement? Jason Worlids or Chris Carter?
The Steelers were banking on that being Worilds. But he has yet to show it on the field.
What is the logical end to the Mike Wallace saga? How has Tony Clemons looked in training camp?
It's going to end one of two ways: He signs a long-term deal with the Steelers or he sits out the first 10 games before reporting to the team (he would still get an accrued season to become a free agent). That's how I see it.
being a bengals fan im curious to see how frostee rucker does in cleveland. do you think with coming in to be the immediate starter he can finally take off in his career?
Rucker will help the run defense, not the pass rush.
Who's in line for extensions on the Bengals roster? With all the cap room they have, is now the time to get some deals done?
All of the Bengals starting linebackers are entering the final year of their deals. Thomas Howard earned an extension by his play last year.
Wallace may be more important to the Steelers O than ever in the sense that he can keep defenses honest in the event the Steelers really plan to run the ball more...Without Wallace, the opposing d can cheat more...
I agree that Wallace and Brown are a great combination. They make each other better.
JH, What did you have for lunch, besides Jared from Ohio?
The Browns brought in 22 pizzas into the media room, and there isn't 22 reporters in the building right now.
AndY Dalton wouldnt make your top 30 what? Top 30 QBs?
Top 30 players in the AFC North. He would certainly make the list of top 20 quarterbacks in the NFL.
What is a reasonable number of games that the Colts can expect to win this year behind Luck?
Ask the fan who was wearing the James Harrison jersey at Colts training camp.
So you'd take him over Andre Johnson?
Johnson has a lot of injury question marks right now. Did you see how he played last season? If healthy, he would go ahead of A.J. Green. Not sure anyone can say he'll be healthy this year.
Will Mike Adams start at LT week 1 against Denver?
It will either be Adams or Starks.
Btw...you're out of your mind if you think Andy Dalton isn't one of the top 30 players in the arc north. Kinda puts a damper on your credibility.
Then you should question some of the credibility of the personnel decision-makers in the division that I talk to.
What is the reasonable number of games that the Browns can expect to win this year behind Weeden?
Four to seven seems reasonable.
Come on and be a Steelers homer already! Purple isn't your color..
I'm wearing green today. Guess that makes me a Packers homer today. Anyone need a discount double-check?
Thanks for all of the questions. Sorry I couldn't get to them all. Have to get set up for Browns practice. The chat will come from Bengals camp next week. I will let you know if the time or day has to change because of the practice schedule. Hope everyone has a great week.
