Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Welcome to a special chat from Scranton, Pa., the home of above ground pools. Lots to talk about. Fire away.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Do you think that Tommy Baldwin Racing will borrow Danica Patrick from SHR for the Ford Eccoline 400 at Homestead?

David Newton
  (3:01 PM)

Nope. They said 10 races and the 10-race schedule is set.

Rick (NC)

Maybe Nascar should award bonus points for qualifying and practice sessions like NHRA. It helps their countdown. May be difficult for practice sessions since teams have different agendas, just a thought.

David Newton
  (3:02 PM)

Yeah, just have to figure out the right mix. I'd like to see a point given for winning the pole at least.

Kurtis (Houston, TX) [via mobile]

Was there an announcement or news leak that I missed on Kenseth for sure going to JGR? For last week or so, all Ive heard from analysts & sources its a done deal, yet I havent seen anything official and saw yesterday that nothing can be stated til late August. While I think its a strong possibility, Im still not sold that its a done deal. Do u?

David Newton
  (3:04 PM)

I wrote it on Sunday. Sources told me that Kenseth can't talk about it until mid- to late August because of a stipulation in his Roush contract. Because they've waited this long, they may even wait longer to announce Joey deal too. Here's a link to the story if you missed it. http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/8211686/sources-matt-kenseth-discuss-new-sprint-cup-deal-joe-gibbs-racing

JOHN MORGAN [via mobile]

WHEN WILL JEFF GORDON WIN

David Newton
  (3:05 PM)

Geez, I thought it would be one of the last two races. He really could win anywhere, but time is running out. He needs to win two of the final six now. Tall order.

Bowtie51 [via mobile]

Its my birthday and as a gift I would like you to reasure me that Kurt Busch will drive for a top teir team again....SOON....maybe the 39 or the 31

David Newton
  (3:07 PM)

Hey, it's my son's birthday too. Hope you are having a happy one. I can't guarantee what you want for a present, though. Richard Childress told me Burton will be back in the 31. He has a deal that doesn't expire for at least another year. If Newman were to go elsewhere, that would make Busch a possibility at SHR, but not without a sponsor. Monster Energy could be the wild card here. And I'm told Kurt has told Phoenix Racing officials he will come back there if they can get sponsorship. Have a happy one anyway.

Roscoe (Cali)

Is Urt relegated to running with lower tier teams for the forseeable future? If not, who will take a chance on him?

David Newton
  (3:07 PM)

Could be.Sponsors are still afraid of him.

Dave (WI)

I know cost conservation is #1 in racing now, but it seems like it costs so much anyway, why not just aero template the cars on the outside and let the teams "have at it" underneath for mechanical grip.

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

You'd see some wild stuff and you'd see a few teams, like Johnson's maybe, get way ahead of the field.

Boston for 15 (Boston)

What's up Newt? Assuming Clint makes the Chase with a win under his belt, is his season with his new team already considered mission accomplished?

David Newton
  (3:08 PM)

Think it is regardless. It has turned out much better than he thought, wins aside.

Marion (SC)

David,When do you think Chevy will reveal their SS cup car and anything new on Dodge ?

David Newton
  (3:09 PM)

Well, Johnson is testing the SS car next week at Martinsville. I will tweet pictures then. Dodge I'm told will stay in the sport, but at what capacity I can't be sure. Still not sure it will happen.

Sue B. (Seattle, WA)

Hi David. I really liked your article last week about NNS moving to the Brickyard. I sorely missed the races at LOR. They are often the best of the season. I know sponsor exposure (aka MONEY) was reportedly a big part of the move but I'd be curious to know how the sponsors feel after the fact. Did they really get more out of it? The fans around me were largely apathetic, whereas fans at LOR are excited, enthusiastic and engaged (Arca and USAC were fun!). Do the sponsors feel like they got a big boost? Is there ANY chance Nascar will change their mind and go back to LOR for NNS and trucks?

David Newton
  (3:11 PM)

Thanks. It's sad when NASCAR loses another of its roots. Money was a big part of it. The purse and what NASCAR wanted from LOR, LOR was not willing to pay. Indy was. And as much as I hate the move, the sponsors to get more out of being at the big track. Just not as good of a show, so fans lose.

Marion (SC)

David,Do u think Logano will be in Penskes 22 next season ?

David Newton
  (3:11 PM)

I wouldn't bet a lot on it. If Sam Hornish does well the rest of the year he's the guy. I also wouldn't overlook Bayne since Penske is moving to Ford.

Nick Rolando (Orlando)

David, everything is good there in Scranton. Was wondering when we might hear something about the sponsors for Stenhouse and who they might be?Also, do you know if Penske has thought of the idea of Logano in 22, Hornish w/Alliance in 12 or vice versa? Always appreciate the chats.

David Newton
  (3:13 PM)

I love Scranton. Ever been to The Bog? Great hangout. I am looking for a few more restaurant recommendations. On my hew heart healthy diet I need a place where I can get good fish. As for Stenhouse, hearing most of his NW sponsors will stick with him. As for Logano and Hornish, I can see that happening if Penske can get Alliance and Werth to step up. Thanks

Jim (Bayala)

Hey Newt, great story on Joey today and I wondered if you think part of Joey's challenge was that Zippy didn't have the work ethnic to develop a young talent and with Jason as his crew chief we are seeing Joey's true potential?

David Newton
  (3:14 PM)

I do believe that pairing Zippy with Joey in the long run was a mistake. Zippy was pretty set in his ways, and bringing in a young kid who needed more positive reinforcement just wasn't the right mix. Jason and Joey are a better fit. If this had happened two years ago we might not be seeing him in this fix.

Ron (Smithville)

Hi Newt, Do you think Sadler is gonna be whining for the rest of his life like he's the first driver in history to be impacted by a NASCAR ruling? Juan Pablo had the big Indy race taken from him and Boyer lost a potential Sprint Cup and they never moaned like Sadler.

David Newton
  (3:15 PM)

He's settled down. Just think the immediate impact of losing a race at Indy hit him pretty hard. Plus, he had guys like Jimmie Johnson and Bowyer screaming how he was robbed. Made him feel more cheated.

Cameron (Palo Alto, CA)

My Man Newt! I'm still bumed that Sadler got a victory taken away due to a lack of understanding of the rules. NASCAR claiming that he wouldn't have been penalized had he given the spot back just added fuel to the fire too. Is that actually how the rule is written? If you beat the leader to the line, you'll get away with it if you give him back the spot?

David Newton
  (3:16 PM)

That is how it was explained to me. Unfortunately, Sadler wasn't aware of that. Seems NASCAR should have radioed to say give the spot back and all will be OK.

txtechjmacattack (lubbock)

hey newt, on the sadler deal doesn't the blame fall 100% on childress for breaking the rules by having diloon start racing before the green flag by pushing sadler?

David Newton
  (3:17 PM)

It falls on a lot of people. Sadler could have dragged his brakes, which may or may not have caused a wreck. Dillon could have backed off. And Keselowski could have not been playing around trying to get an advantage.

Cameron (Palo Alto, CA)

Regarding the lack of clearity for the restart rule/give back the spot if you beat the leader to the line rule, in your opinion, what's the most ambiguous rule in NASCAR? P.S. We're all glad to see you getting back to better health, and wish you nothing but the best Newt!

David Newton
  (3:19 PM)

Thanks on the health. Not sure I'd call any of them ambiguous. They're pretty straight forward. I do agree with Johnson and a few other driver that waving off the restart if a driver jumps it is the best solution.

Jack (Phx, AZ)

Are the EGR cars that really bad? Damn, it soooo frustating watching a 20th to 25th finish week in & week out......

David Newton
  (3:20 PM)

Yeah, afraid so. They are working with the bodies to try and get more speed out of them. Ganassi would like more power in the engines, too, although Childress says that's not the problem.

Phoenix (AZ)

After the Indy NW race I saw a Childress interview where he was crying about how #22 "brake checks on the restarts every week". With all of RCR's cheating penalities this year do you think NASCAR needs to tell him to worry about his race teams and NASCAR will run the sport?

David Newton
  (3:20 PM)

Good point. But Brad does do that.

Roscoe (Chino, Ca.)

I heard Tim Cindric say that since the AJ deal, #2 or #22 haven't scored a Top 10 due to the distractions and now with the FORD move do you think #2 will probably finish last in the chase?

David Newton
  (3:20 PM)

Hardly. I'd put Keselowski among my top four favorites to win it.

Matt (Chicago)

A bit off topic, but do you know why NASCAR stopped running the full course at Sears Point? Would they ever consider running the full course again and the boot at Watkins Glen?

David Newton
  (3:21 PM)

Really don't have a great answer for you on either, but I don't see a change.

Jamerson (Georgia)

What are the odds that Logano will end up at Penske? It seems like a perfect situation to me... Logano could have access to a new environment with another young driver in Keselowski to work with. He'd also have a strong Nationwide team so he can continue to run in that series. And that would leave Penske open to bringing back his 3rd team with Hornish and Alliance Truck Parts in the future instead of rushing Hornish to full-time Cup before he's ready.

David Newton
  (3:22 PM)

It does seem like the perfect storm, but as in many cases what appears to be the best solution doesn't always work out. What we forget here is that Gibbs wants Logano back and is working hard to get sponsors for him. There's a loyalty factor that works both ways.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Even though you Cover NASCAR, Are you a Big Fan of the 2012 Summer Olympics?

David Newton
  (3:22 PM)

Love the Olympics. One of the few things in my life I haven't covered. You need to start a petition to get ESPN to send me to the next games.

Matt (Charlotte)

Hey David, won't be around to see the chat live, but I was just curious on how you see silly season playing out in the end?

David Newton
  (3:24 PM)

It all hinges on the 22 and sponsorship on how crazy it gets. If Penske puts Hornish in the 22 and doesn't add a third team then there won't be as much movement. I truly in the end believe you'll see Logano back at Gibbs, Hornish in the 22 and Newman in the 39. But again, it's early and it all hinges on sponsors.

jesse (iowa)

Newt the past 2 nationwide races prove my point that cup drivers dont belong. first the harvick incident in which i lost respect for him, then the sadler penalty, which wasnt keselowskis fault but he benifited from. your thoughts?

David Newton
  (3:25 PM)

Well, Keselowski did play a role playing with the brakes. I agree in an ideal world Cup drivers wouldn't be in NW, but we don't live in an ideal world.

Johnny (Alabama)

Junior was strong at Pocono earlier in the year, and his team seems to have gained speed more than lost it since then. What do you think are the odds we'll see Junior grab the win at Pocono this weekend?

David Newton
  (3:26 PM)

I'd say pretty good. He's had speed all year and this is a track that rewards speed more than most. Don't overlook Logano, though. He's bringing back the same car that won the pole, led the most laps and won the race. And Mark Martin should be strong again, too.

jesse (iowa)

i thought the penalty on elliott sadler was bogus. i dont see why he was black flagged when kyle busch wasnt on the start of the race

David Newton
  (3:26 PM)

It's different at the start of the race. The flagman starts the race then. The leader restarts from then on.

Derrick (Ocala, FL)

If the championship battle does come down to 48 and 88, do you think Dale Jr. has the drive, determination, and aggressiveness to really step up to the plate and take the title away from Jimmie? Or is the 48 having bad luck going to be his only chance?

David Newton
  (3:27 PM)

He has all those things, but Jimmie has more talent and if I had to pick between the two I'd go with him.

scott (denton,tx)

so what do you think about this weekand race with the new pavement with the second race now racing there this weekand do you think it will be the same race or a differant stragety of pit stop or just a another race with the new pavement....

David Newton
  (3:27 PM)

I don't see a lot changing, whichis good. The last race was pretty good.

Mike (NC)

I had no idea Andy Petree didn't have a name, and Darian Grubb was still Tony Stewart's crew chief. Did you?

David Newton
  (3:27 PM)

Smarty.

scott (denton,tx)

now with aj release for the rest of the season from penske racing racing stable who do you thing will be the next driver for penske for 2013 season and beyond do you see ryan newman maybe just maybe joey logan or just somebody else from the nationwide series you thoughts.....

David Newton
  (3:28 PM)

I believe Hornish will get the ride if he does well the rest of the year. I wouldn't rule out Newman or Logano, from what I've been told. But Hornish definitely has the inside track.

Kristin (NYC)

I think the WC race is more exciting than the Cup race altogether. But I think the NW and Truck races are just as competitive.

David Newton
  (3:29 PM)

Sure you'll find plenty of people who agree.

Matthew (NC)

Newt, as a Gordon fan I've got huge issues with this point system. DNF's have become death nails to a season. He can run second or third for the next six weeks and have no chance of catching Bowyer even if he finishes 15th every week. Gordon can potentially go half the season finishing in the top six with no way of recovering from the disaster of the first half. Shouldn't we see a bigger reward for top 10's, top 5's and wins?

David Newton
  (3:29 PM)

I've been saying that ever since they put in the new system, particularly for wins.

Saul (San Diego)

Sir Newton: Do I take it that the National Guard will continue to sponsor Dale Jr for next season, after a strong response from the Guard Association on the value of the sponsorship and the bill defeat in congress to stop military sponsorship?

David Newton
  (3:30 PM)

That appears to be the plan. Congress isn't pulling that.

David Newton
  (3:30 PM)

And Sir. Wow. Not sure how to respond.

Cal (Naughton Jr.)

Do you agree with Ricky Bobby, who said: "Magic Man is an awesome name"?

David Newton
  (3:31 PM)

If you ain't first, you're last.

scott (denton,tx)

so what is your is your take still on last saturday race i still thing that elliot got screwed from the last restart from the race last saturday's race you thoughts.......

David Newton
  (3:32 PM)

At first I agreed, but after being explained everything I don't feel as strongly about it. Had he known everything about the rule it could have been prevented, at least that's what NASCAR tells me.

Saul (San Diego)

Do you have a least favorite to track to cover?

David Newton
  (3:33 PM)

Hmm. Don't like bad-mouthing any track. I like Pocono and Dover while many of my cohorts do not. I will say I'm not a huge fan of Chicagoland for various reasons, but that's just personal preference. I love short tracks. Martinsville is my fav.

Foster (Texas)

Why are restarts and race starts so complicated? Why doesnt NASCAR just radio to the flag person that the field is set. Once the green drops, it is every man for himself.

David Newton
  (3:34 PM)

They don't have to be, and that was the message NASCAR sent at the driver's meeting last Sunday. Here you go again. http://espn.go.com/racing/nascar/cup/story/_/id/8211604/nascar-talks-possible-restart-penalties-drivers

JAMMER (UTAH)

With Danica running full time next year in Cup, do you think Tommy Baldwin will want the owner's points of the 10 car? If SHR re-signs Newman, Tony will have to give the 14 owner points to Danica and use the past champions provisional. Your thoughts?

David Newton
  (3:35 PM)

Might not make a difference if NASCAR does away with the top 35 rule. The only race the points would matter is the Daytona 500. I doubt SHR would give up the points to Baldwin. He's done Baldwin a favor with his Alliance.

Jeff (Clearwater)

KuBu in the 39? How would he exist with Tony as the boss?

David Newton
  (3:36 PM)

You know what they say about personalities that are alike?

Saul (San Diego)

How much of the race earnings/distribution goes to the driver?

David Newton
  (3:36 PM)

Depends on what is in the driver's contract. 40 t0 45 percent is tops, I believe. Then it goes down from there.

Keith (Ohio)

How is Scranton these days? I was born there (for better or worse)

David Newton
  (3:37 PM)

Love it. 82 degrees and sunny.

Jamerson (Georgia)

Should NASCAR start awarding some sort of bonus to whoever is leading the regular season points when the Chase starts? For all the hoopla that has been made over Dale Jr. leading the points, it means nothing once the Chase starts.

David Newton
  (3:37 PM)

Another thing I've argued for. If you're going to work hard all season to be the points leader going into the Chase you should get some sort of guarantee that lets you lead when the Chase begins.

Bill (Danville Pa)

If you get a chance go to Knoebels Groves Amusement park in Elysburg. You'll love it!

David Newton
  (3:38 PM)

Don't think you'll see me on any rollercoasters this weekend, but thanks.

scott (denton,tx)

now that jr is in the points lead do you thing that jr will win a race in the regular season or maybe in the post ten race chase coming up...

David Newton
  (3:38 PM)

I said when he won his first race that would lead to more. Still believe that.

Greg (La)

Whats the chances of logAno ending up at penske

David Newton
  (3:39 PM)

40-60, maybe. They are just starting the process. Let's see how things work out. Gibbs may come up with a deal to keep Logano and make all this talk meaningless.

marty (garden city, mi)

is NASCAR trying to lose fans or gain them? not a very promising 3 weeks here. week 1-off week, week 2-indy, follow-the-leader single-file snooze-fest and week 3 pocono. at least i get to catch up on my naps.

David Newton
  (3:40 PM)

Gain, and they're trying to address the follow-the-leader issue with changes to the car. But remember, the racing's much better now than it was 25 years ago when you had only a few cars on the lead lap more times than not.

Jenny (Chicago)

David - Help me understand something... AJ tested positive for "Amphetamines". What is that? Is it something that someone would take to "get high?" Is is something a doctor would give as "performance enhancing?" Do you smoke it? Take a pill? Is it a legal substance or is it an illegal drug? The reporting doesn't make sense to the drug ignorant amongst us.

David Newton
  (3:41 PM)

There are a wide variety of amphetamines, ranging from Adderal to speed to cocaine. They haven't identified exactly what it was. According to Dr. Black, who oversees the testing program, it wasn't something that came from a supplement or over the shelf product. Wish I could narrow it down more, and I will continue to try.

Jeff (Clearwater)

Instead of having the Camry next year, shouldn't they use the Prius? If their tires stay good, they would never have to stop.

David Newton
  (3:42 PM)

Funny.

Rusty (Texas)

Hi Newt, Logano was at M&M's headquarters today along with Rowdy. What gives???

David Newton
  (3:43 PM)

Don't know, but will ask. One of my wild scenarios would be for Logano to take over M&Ms and Monster Energy move to Kyle in Cup. Really not so wild when you think about it, though. Or maybe Joey simply wanted a chocolate fix.

Damon (Dallas, TX)

Any chance that Johanna Long gets a better NNS ride next season?

David Newton
  (3:43 PM)

Not from one of the top Cup-affiliated teams, I'm afraid.

Joe Gibbs Racing Fan (Huntersville, NC)

Since Denny and Joey have won 3 of the last 5 at Pocono do you think it is Rowdy's turn Sunday especially with the #18's awesome Indy run?

David Newton
  (3:44 PM)

Could be. He's definitely due. I can see any of the Gibbs cars winning.

Dwane (ky)

is roush going to have 4 cars next year?

David Newton
  (3:44 PM)

Probably not. A stretch to sponsor three.

Damon (Dallas, TX)

What about Jacque Villeneuve in the 22?

David Newton
  (3:45 PM)

Nope. Hornish to drive at The Glen.

Ryan (where ever)

To me if Nascar was trying to gain fans more races ESPECIALLY all the chase races would be on network tv,and not cable

David Newton
  (3:45 PM)

It's all pretty much the same in my world, and the world of most people, today. But I do understand there are thoe that don't have cable. Wish I could open my mancave to all of you.

Dwane (ky)

when will we hear who is going to drive what car ?

David Newton
  (3:46 PM)

I'd say most by the end of September or before.

Joe (Troy, NY)

Is there any circumstance that you can predict Kurt and Kyle racing together on the same team? (Sprint cup)

David Newton
  (3:47 PM)

Only if Kyle expands his NW team into Cup, and I don't see that happening at the present.

scott (denton,tx)

do you see any more driver changes during silly season or do you think that there will be more during the off season before next season daytona 500 in february your thoughts....

David Newton
  (3:47 PM)

It'll all be done way before the offseason. Sponsors and owners need to know sooner before later.

kb18isdaman (rowdys world)

hey mr newton, do you think shrub has a shot to win this weekend? we kyle fans are starting to get antsy to when he will return to him dominant form like in 2008

David Newton
  (3:48 PM)

He does have a chance, and you may love my column for the weekend asking if you'd rather have Kyle or Dale Jr as your driver. Seems the tide has turned.

Jenny (Chicago)

Is Penske saying anything about Kenny Wallace in the 22 in Nationwide and when that will happen?

David Newton
  (3:48 PM)

Haven't heard that.

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

What is Penske looking for Hornish to do in the 22 because so far he hasnt showm much

David Newton
  (3:49 PM)

Well, Daytona was a wash. Too much happened too fast. At New Hampshire Sam ran from 10-15 for much of the day before settling for, I believe, 22nd. Penske was very happy. Sixteenth at Indy wasn't so bad. But I get your point. He needs to start showing the ability to finish in the top 10 and win.

kb18isdaman (rowdys world)

what are the chances we see a gibbs showdown this weekend? 11 18 and 20 are all stout at the tricky triangle

David Newton
  (3:50 PM)

I'd say pretty good, but there will be some HMS in there as well with the way JJ and Dale Jr are running.

Jeff (Clearwater)

Ryan Hunter-Reay is chatting right now as well, Will he win the IndyCar series this year?

David Newton
  (3:51 PM)

Good chance. And does he have more chatters than me?

Kevin (Nevada)

You want a point awarded for the pole, but what would be your procedure if qualifying is rained out?

David Newton
  (3:51 PM)

Fastest in practice? Or nothing.

phoenix 2012 (at home)

hey newt, we are starting to get worried about the performance of the 88 will they be pull it back together and win again this season?

David Newton
  (3:52 PM)

Worried? He had a career-best fourth at Indy and is leading the points. Yes,I see him winning again.

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

Are there any dark horses not being mentioned that might get the 22 ride

David Newton
  (3:52 PM)

Outside of Bayne, I don't see it.

Steven (Kingsport)

I think the answer is to the 22 is most correctly: "If Roger can convince Pennzoil, it will be Hornish - if he can't, then Newman or Logano."

David Newton
  (3:53 PM)

The answer is if Hornish wins a race or two and runs in the top 10 Pennzoil will want him.

tim (az)

David, the Roush cars seem to be a bit more consistent, but the Gibbs cars seem to have more race winning ability, imo. If it is true Kenseth to JGR is a done deal, should we expect an even more dangerous Matt? Also, any new rumors as to if Fennig will join him on the "dark side"? Thanks.

David Newton
  (3:53 PM)

It is true that Kenseth is going ot Gibbs. And Matt always is dangerous. Just ask him. Not sure on Fennig. Roush hates letting people go he doesn't have to.

Kristin (NYC)

Regarding EGR...would Ganassi dump both his drivers in the same year if things don't pick up? And who would be candidates to replace one or both?

David Newton
  (3:54 PM)

Nope. Montoya has another year or two left on his deal. The plan is to re-sign McMurray and they are getting close.

Jay (Ga)

So, ya still think Logano wil make Chase over Kahne?

David Newton
  (3:54 PM)

Talk to me after Sunday. If Logano wins a second time at Pocono I see both of them getting in.

Yappy (Welcome ,NC)

Will Paul Menard ever get a break? Seems like he always joins teams like RPM and now RCR when they are on the down slide into mid field.

David Newton
  (3:55 PM)

He did win Indy last year. But maybe it's the driver more than the team. Not saying it is. Just saying maybe.

Steven (Kingsport)

When Sadler jumped the start, I looked over at my wife and said, Sadler has to give it back...if Sadler didn't do that - his not knowing the rule is on him, not Nascar. Saying all of that, Kesolowski's start was an embarassment - the black flag should have been shown to him as well.

David Newton
  (3:56 PM)

I think NASCAR sent the message that others will be blackflagged in the future if they don't abide by the rules.

Jay (Ga)

Even though I like Bowyer, It's difficult to root for MWR after how they screwed Reutimann last fall. do you think Reuty will ever get a solid ride, or did MRW pretty much ruin the rest of his career by waiting til November to dump him?

David Newton
  (3:56 PM)

I like Reutimann as well, but MWR did upgrade. You can't blame the company for that.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Who will take over the #39 Chevrolet for SHR if Ryan Newman decides to leave?

David Newton
  (3:56 PM)

I'd say Kurt Busch or nobody.

Damon (Dallas, TX)

Is Danica attempting The Double next year a bad idea?

David Newton
  (3:57 PM)

Can you imagine the team meeting if that happened?

Jackie (Spring Lake NC)

I know it isnt gonna happen but wouldnt Sadler be a better pick than Hornish at least he's won in Cup before

David Newton
  (3:57 PM)

Sadler would be a good short-time fix. Great with sponsors and he's made the Chase before.

Kim (NC)

Do you think Burton will be in the #31 next year?

David Newton
  (3:57 PM)

Childress told me he would be.

Dwane (ky)

is there going to be any new teams in the cup for next year?

David Newton
  (3:58 PM)

Nothing major.

Jay (Ga)

In your complete honest opinion, if someone like Dale Jr, Jeff Gordon, or T.Stewart failed a drug test, do you think Nascar would go public, or try to cover it quietly because of their super star status.

David Newton
  (3:58 PM)

Public. The laboratory informs the driver first, then NASCAR. I doubt NASCAR would want a scandal if news leaked that it covered up a positive test to protect a star.

Kristin (NYC)

Regarding the #43 - if Amirola gets bumped, where would he go? And who would replace him? You think he should be signed to an extra year?

David Newton
  (3:59 PM)

I'd still like to see Kurt Busch in that car. That pretty much says what I think.

Rowdy Rocks (Vegas)

Do you look for Rowdy to pull a Stewart and squeak into the chase then run off 5 wins and win the Sprint Cup?

David Newton
  (3:59 PM)

He was my preseason pick, although I've waivered to JJ for the past month or so.

HMS Fan (NC)

Do you think Chad Knaus has gotten the credit he deserves for the reclaimation job he's done with the #88 team?
