Chat with Terry Blount

Terry Blount
  (1:59 PM)

Hey gang, sad day for Dinger. I hope he gets another chance. What's on your mind today?

Vernie (NJ)

Hi Terry, who would have thought that Kurt Busch would last longer this season in the #51 than Kenseth did in the #17 or Kurt's replacement did in the #22?

Terry Blount
  (2:02 PM)

I hadn't thought of it that way, but interesting, although Matt's still in the 17 for now.

Jay (GA)

With Allmendinger out of the 22, would Penske consider putting Ryan Newman back in one of his cars. He's got the experience, and won alot of races for the Captain from 02 to 08.

Terry Blount
  (2:04 PM)

It's possible. Right now, it's a tryout session for Sam, but I think he'll have to race really well to get the job. Depending on what happens at JGR, Joey might be in line for the 22.

Ron (OH)

How about cutting the races by 100 miles/laps and not counting caution laps? That way if you pay to go to the race you know how many laps of racing you are paying to see.

Terry Blount
  (2:05 PM)

Ron, you're a genius. I hadn't thought of that, but it's a darn good idea.

Marion (SC)

Terry, anything new on the Dodge front, also who do you think will get the nod for the 22 now that AJ is officially released ?

Terry Blount
  (2:06 PM)

Things aren't looking good fopr Dodge since we're now into August and they don't have a deal. I hope it works out, but I have serious doubts now. Impossible to say for sure who gets the 22, but if I'm guessing today, I'll say Logano.

Spade Racing (aka Mack) (Wilmington DE)

Is there any estimated time-table on when Dinger could be re-instated? Are we looking at months or years?

Terry Blount
  (2:07 PM)

Not years, but he won't be back this year. I imagine he would be reinstated for 2013.

Zach H (Indiana)

With the support that AJ seemed to get from Tony Stewart, do you think AJ might end up there if Ryan doesn't return?

Terry Blount
  (2:08 PM)

I doubt it. It isn't that AJ had the positive drug test as much as he hasn't really raced well this season, so that will hurt him getting a ride with a good team next year.

James (Bayala)

Hi Terry, what do you say to us Kurt Busch fans who believe that Penske made a huge mistake releasing Kurt especially now that Kurt has lasted longer in the #51 than his replacement did in the #22?

Terry Blount
  (2:09 PM)

I say it's bad luck for Penske, but he did the right thing in letting Kurt go, who continues to have anger issues.

Joe Gibbs Racing Fan (Huntersville)

Do you expect Rowdy and Matt to be dominant at JGR because of their great relationship and sort of leave Denny and Joey in the dust?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Absolutely not. Denny is a top driver with a great crew chief and he'll continue to contend for championships.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

So is Kenseth to JGR a done deal?

Terry Blount
  (2:11 PM)

Yes, they just don't want to announce it until Joey's situation is determined.

Mark (Iowa)

Do you like the way Richard Childress is bringing along the Dillon boys?

Terry Blount
  (2:13 PM)

I do. Both those guys are extremely talented. And Richard isn't going to rush either one of them. He aleady said Austin will back back in NW next year.

Joyce (Los Angeles)

Now that the drama around AJ has been diminished, when do you anticipate the official announcement about where Matt Kenseth will be racing in 2013?

Terry Blount
  (2:14 PM)

It all depends on Joey's situation. Matt probably will be driving for Home Depot next year, so they don't want to say that now while Joey still is driving that car until they either line up something else for him or determine he isn't coming back.

Luke (Denton, TX)

Last week you wrote something about fans bashing Danica cause of the perception she hasn't paid her dues so what about the Diloon twins? They've been give the royal treatment on the red carpet?

Terry Blount
  (2:15 PM)

The difference is the Dillon boys are winning and have proven they can get it done and race consistently up front. It doesn't matter how you got there if you have the ability to race with the leaders.

Ron (OH)

Isn't one reason that the #22 isn't as doing as well this year is the rookie CC? That has to be a step down from Addington.

Terry Blount
  (2:16 PM)

Absolutely Ron. In fact, that's the biggest reason in my opinion.

Joyce (Los Angeles)

Since my Kenseth question got answered I guess I will go to the usual back up on this chat - food. In LA the best donuts are Yum Yum, what is the best donut you recommend.

Terry Blount
  (2:18 PM)

You haven't lived until you have a Shipley's donut in Houston Texas, and other places in the Lone Star state. They are hot and melt in your mouth when you make a morning stop. And the ham & cheese kolaches are to die for.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

You said you still believe that letting Kurt Busch go was the right move for Penske. It's that your opinion as a reporter/journalist?

Terry Blount
  (2:20 PM)

Yes it is. That's my job here, to state my opinions and write columns that provoke thought based on my 30 years as a sports journalist. I don't expect everyone to agree with me.

Brian (KS)

Who are your top 5 for Pocono and your darkhorse?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Hamlin, Gordon, Logano, Stewart and JJ. Darkhorse is Menard.

Michael (NC)

Pernske is usually unpredictable with his drivers pics so do you think he will supprise and put Scotty Speed in the #22?

Terry Blount
  (2:21 PM)

Not a chance in you know where.

Dan (NC)

NASCAR should just have the leader be first when they get to the start zone and then when the green flag waves it's everybody for themselves. The #1 car doesn't have to be 1st to the start/finish line.

Terry Blount
  (2:23 PM)

I agree. Let the flagman wave the green flag to signal everyone can go. Whoever gets to the start line first doesn't matter, and it takes out the judgment call of whether the leader spun his tires and missed a shift.

Ryan (NC)

Terry being that he nearly won last time and domniated the race last month do u consider jr to be one of the favorites this weekend?

Terry Blount
  (2:24 PM)

I think Jr. has a chance to win almost anywhere these days, except for road courses. But I wouldn't say he's the favorite Sunday.

Troy (Detroit)

I realize IMS is trying to make more money outside of the Indy 500 with all these other events, but its not working. Will IMS ever admit that, Terry?

Terry Blount
  (2:27 PM)

No, but something needs to change. But let's keep one thing in perspective. The attendance Sunday was more than we will see at Darlington, Martinsville, Chicago, KC, Fontana or Homestead. However, it is half what it was a few years ago. They need a dramatic change, like racing on Saturday night or moving the event into the Chase, because they aren't taking Indy off the schedule anytime soon.

Bowtie51 (md)

If I were Penske I would go after Logano and then change the number to 81, as for Kurt...it hurts me to think that I'll never see him in a top tier ride again...the sport needs a villian

Terry Blount
  (2:28 PM)

You will see him in a top-tier ride again. His talent alone will cause that to happen. All he need to do is stay a little calmer at times.

Stu (Laguna Hills, Ca.)

Do you think #88 is shaping up to the the #99 of 2012, you know 1 win, close but no cigar?

Terry Blount
  (2:30 PM)

Maybe, but I do think Jr. will win again this year. They are running up front so consistently that odds are he will win one or two more races. I honestly think this is his best chance ever to contend for the title.

Foster (Texas)

Why do people think Logano is some lock for the 22? He has two wins his whole career in equipment that Denny and Kyle get two wins in half a season.

Terry Blount
  (2:31 PM)

He isn't a lock, but he is a consideration because you have to look at what the options are. It's not exactly a list of championship drivers available out there.

Teri (North Hollywood)

Do you think Matt can pick up another win or two before his lame-duck season is over? By the way, where did the term "lame duck" come from?

Terry Blount
  (2:33 PM)

Good question. I don't know. I think Matt might win again, but I don't think he can win the title. No matter what they say, it's not the same for a team when they know the driver is leaving and people start looking around for other job opportunities.

Foster (Texas)

I would run to Newman or Vickers before Logano if I was Mr. Penske and Shell

Terry Blount
  (2:34 PM)

Shell/Pennzoil will have a big say in what happens. It's not just about driving. It's about who they think best can represent their corporation. Of course, they thought that was AJ.

P-Dub (America's Vancouver)

Assess the Biff's chances to win a race the rest of the year (whcih one would it be?), and in the Chase (assuming he makes it)...

Terry Blount
  (2:36 PM)

His best chance to win in the Chase was Kansas. However, with the repave, it might be a whole new ballgame for him there. So his other best chance probably is Texas.

Vinnie (ATL)

I think ESPN showing Senna is fantastic. The movie is incredible. You could see the angst in Senna's face all weekend in Italy. Do you believe like I do that if Senna had lived he would have taken a few of Micheal's F1 championships?

Terry Blount
  (2:37 PM)

Many people believe Senna was the most talented race car driver they have ever seen, including Foyt and Andretti and Schumacher.

Brandon (EPT)

Do you think David Ragan will get a top ride again.

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Not anytime soon.

Spade Racing (aka Mack) (Wilmington DE)

You mentioned that it isn't a bunch of champions out there...well, except for Kurt Busch. Ironic, eh?

Terry Blount
  (2:38 PM)

Yes, but we all know that's happening.

Jake (Irving, TX)

Do you buy the theory that Rowdy is gonna pull a Stewert and squeak into the chase then reel off 5 wins and the championship?

Terry Blount
  (2:39 PM)

No. Tony caught lightning in a bottle last year in the Chase. I don't see anyone doing that again.

Vinnie (ATL)

AJ or Mario? Settle this for me now, please?

Terry Blount
  (2:41 PM)

Both are legends, but for me, it's Foyt. Full disclosure: I might be a little bias on this one. I'm from Houston and my dad knew AJ when I was a kid.

Bowtie51 (MD)

Is it just me or have the Nationwide races been better than the Cup races lately?

Terry Blount
  (2:43 PM)

Not just you. Many of the NW races have been way better, including last weekend at Indy. The hope is this will change next year when Cup goes to new cars where the distinct bodies are much like what we see now in NW. But there are other reason the NW races are better. For one, the races are shorter and there's more urgency.

Ron (Smithville)

Who do you think are the candidates to run the #31 next year to replace Burton?

Terry Blount
  (2:44 PM)

If that happens, Ryan Newman may be the top candidate if they can't work out the sponsorship situation at SHR.

Brooks (Richmond)

How important is it for Allmendinger to get another shot, even if in Nationwide, with a decent team, to let any other driver who ends up in this situation know that the system does work and you can come back?

Terry Blount
  (2:45 PM)

Excellent comment Brooks. It's extremely important. NASCAR wants AJ to make it back to prove the system works and show you can make a mistake and overcome it if you do the right things.

Foster (Texas)

NASCAR needs to change the restart rule, It should be once the flagman waves the flag both drivers on row one can go. The way it is now makes sero sence.

Terry Blount
  (2:46 PM)

Bingo Foster. This ain't rocket science. Keep it simple and take all the judgment calls out of it.

Kurtis (Houston, Texas)

Any chance Monster tags themselves to Kurt for a Sprint Cup ride? Also, you mentioned being from Houston - Texans fan? How do you see them doing this year? (please dont say you follow Tennesse b/c of Oilers)

Terry Blount
  (2:49 PM)

I was a huge Oilers fans growing up Kurtis, but no, not once Bud carted them off the Tennessee. I think the Texans have an excellent chance to get to the Super Bowl. They would have made it last year if Schaub hadn't gotten hurt.

Pete (Ohio)

Do you think Gordon needs to look seriously at retirement not because he can't drive but since he's been so totally dominanted by Jimmie and #48 for the last 10 years?

Terry Blount
  (2:50 PM)

No. I think Jeff wants to drive at least two or three more years, and he is convinced he still can win a fifth title.

Clay (Charlotte)

Lame duck refers to a duck which is unable to keep up with its flock, making it a target for predators. (Thanks Wikipedia!)

Terry Blount
  (2:51 PM)

Thank you Clay. The glory of Wiki. It's amazing.

Kurtis (Houston, TX)

You follow any NFL team then? Please dont say Cowboys...

Terry Blount
  (2:52 PM)

Oh no, as a Houstonian, I hated the Cowboys as a kid. I follow the Seahawks now since I've lived in the Seattle area the last six years.

Hiroki ((Las Vegas))

Who do you think will be the points leader when the Chase starts?

Terry Blount
  (2:53 PM)

I believe Junior can stay up there until the Chase starts. But the points leader needs a bonus to start the Chase.

Jeremy (Phoenix Oregon)

Hey Terry, with Jeff Gordon chase chances getting slimmer and slimmer, will they start working on 2013?

Terry Blount
  (2:55 PM)

Not yet. They honestly believe they can win twice in the next six races, and it's not impossible. He certainly can win at The Glen and they might pull it off somewhere else.

Brian (KS)

Whats the possibility that NASCAR actually put a emphasis back on qualifying in the near future. Would the owners go for it if they did?

Terry Blount
  (2:58 PM)

They are changing qualifying nest year. No more top 35 guarantee. However, it's still highly unlikely any top driver would miss a race. The top 38 spots in the field will be based on qualifying speed. The next four get in based on where they are in the points. The 43rd spot will be reserved for a past champ. It's better than the top-35 rule, but I'd love to see no provisioanls. Now that would make qualifying exciting and sell some tickets, but it won't happen because NASCAR is scared to death a top driver or big sponsor might miss the show.

Tom (Seattle)

We need a race here in Seattle Terry! Not a Kurt fan or Penske fan - but why not give the guy a 2nd chance in that 22? Shell or Penske won't be on-board, but he honestly has a chance to get them in victory lane better than Hornish (or anyone else available right now). With the wild-card the way it is - he honestly has a small chance. 2 wins your in right?

Terry Blount
  (3:01 PM)

I agree on a race here Tom, and ISC tried to make it happen, first in Marysville and then in Port Orchard. But ISC wanted millions of dollars in public funding, and that wasn't going to happen. As for Kurt, no way Roger or Shell will go down that road again, especially now. That have put someone in the car who can project a positive image.

Tony (Sacramento)

TB - will the new Cup cars be as cool looking as the current NW cars? Kudos to Chevy for bringing the Camaro - that was most definitely needed.

Terry Blount
  (3:02 PM)

Yes Tony. I've seen all of them and they look great.

Terry Blount
  (3:04 PM)

Gotta run folks. Some excellent questions and comment today. You guys were on it. Have a great week. I'm out. Check out my NHRA coverage this weekend from the event here in Seattle. I'll have a big Antron Brown story on Friday. He can become the first driver to sweep the Western Swing twice. Peace.
