Welcome everyone, let's get started.
did preveot commitment suprise you and how do you see him panning out with sc who does he remind you with his skill set? and how do you rank the class now with all 18 verbals?
We had heard rumblings last week that Prevot was going to be targeted for a final spot and we had him at the top of the list of the potential guys for the final spot in the roundtable last week. He's a tall and skinny pass rusher, maybe like a Kori Dickerson from those who can remember a few years back. I rank the class as terrific.
Any idea who might be giving up their scholarship for Redd?
It would only be a guess at this point of any current players, but with recruits there is speculation about Darreus Rogers and his ability to get to camp on time. It could also be a former walk-on who gives up his ride or a medical redshirt.
Isn't it true if Rodgers qualifies or greyshirts, we are down to 17 spots for 2013? Who might have their offer pulled/leave on their own?
As mentioned in the previous post, I'm not really going to speculate on who might give up a spot. Kiffin has indicated that possibility so my guess is he has already talked with the players involved. It also sounded like Kiffin had a plan in place for how to handle it.
Do you think all three WR's will stick with next years class?
I wouldn't call it a 100% certainty. Larue was making statements a few weeks ago about taking trips but recently said he had talked with the coaches and all is set. Then there is the Massington injury factor, right now he is saying all is set with his commitment but you just never know. I think Mitchell is probably the most solid of the three to end up at SC.
Maling room for Silas... Who's spot is he going to take? Are we still actively recruiting guys like Priest and Tahann???
Yes, there is still contact with both Priest and Tahaan. In fact, there was some scuttlebutt last weekend about the possibility of Tahaan being ready to commit. It wouldn't surprise me at all if one of them ended up at USC when all is said and done.
Long time fan down here that recently moved to the heart of SEC country, where they believe football was invented, lolIn next years recruiting class are we going to see more interior D-Lineman recruited and brought in? For the Tampa 2 or our version which is closer to a 4-2-5 base, it seems that a premium is on NT's and 3-techniques which makes me really value the upfield push they provide. Secondly, How many DB's and Safeties will we see recruited and brought in because of our depleted depth expected after next season?Fight On!!!!
Remember that Ed Orgeron is the recruiting coordinator so there will always be a premium on big fellas in the middle of the d-line. I think SC got two good ones this year and I think they take two more next year. I also think we see 2 safeties and 2 corners next year although that could be impacted if SC takes another DB this year or if one of the currently committed players switches positions.
Garry, If Kennard's surgery reveals that he will be out for the year, and he is a medical redshirt, does that free up a slot for Redd, or do redshirts still cound against the 75?
Kennard will count against the 75 for 2012 no matter what.
Garry, Will DeVonte Wilson have any impact this year? What is his status?
Real good question. I've been impressed with him physically, he's up to 6-5, 240 but next week will be his first time on the field for the Trojans so it's hard to know where he is really at. What a huge boost it would be for the DE spot if he can provide some quality reps.
Hi Garry! Give us your take on replacing Kennard? Who will be the primary weak side DE this season? How bad was DK's injury? Is there any chance he could play part of the season?
No word yet on if he will be able to come back at the end of the year but there is hope he could be back by end of November. I just think this is a huge blow for the team, both from a playing perspective and from leadership. I see Greg Townsend as being the most obvious choice to step into the role but Morgan Breslin and Leonard Williams could be two other options.
Does LK continue to recruit other players or does he just stick with the 18 commits already in the fold and work on solidifying their commitments?
He is still talking to other players. Recruiting is a fluid game and the coaches need to be prepared in case there is movement in the current class.
Besides major injury, how could SC lose a game this year?
Lots of ways. At this point USC will be favored in every game but the schedule is tough and the Trojans will have a target on their back every week. Momentum can get going the wrong way, a bad bounce of the ball, a hot quarterback for an opponent or simply the Trojans having an off day, there are plenty of obstacles in the way over the course of a season.
What happened to the DT from San Diego last year? Will he contribute in 2012?
Christian Heyward had shoulder surgery in the off-season which forced him to miss spring ball but he's being counted on as a reserve in the middle behind George Uko at DT.
Gary, Any truth that USC will take one more defensive back? If, so who are two we have a chance at?
As mentioned earlier, I wouldn't rule that out. Tahaan Goodman and Priest Willis are two obvious choices and Leon McQuay continues to show interest as well.
Any word on Safety T.Goodman I know he was a usc lean.
Tahaan has a lot of interest in the Trojans but there are some in his advisory group who want him to continue with the recruiting process.
Knowing Eddie O like we all do, how would you predict his DLs performance in 2012 (Grades: A-D) I say B+
I think most people would take a B+ right now, especially after the loss of Kennard last week. I do think they are capable of earning that kind of mark.
Is there anyway usc can take more than 18 players this year? Which of the trojans 18 commits is NOT so strong on their commitment
No. They are firmly limited to that number but that doesn't mean we won't see some movement within the currently committed group.
So is Roscoe's the new Papadakis Taverna?
Haha, too funny. It seemed to work for Silas Redd.
Who (one name) do you think starts in Dennard's spot game #1? I say Townsend.
Hi Garry -- With the two very serious weightlifting injuries in the past few years (Kennard and Stefan Johnson), do you think SC will reassess its lifting protocol or do anything to avoid this type of thing happening again? Or is it just being viewed as two freak incidents?
They reviewed procedures after the Stafon incident but the Kennard issue was simply a case where the muscle tore during a routine lift. Nothing awkward about it, nothing that involved a spotter, just a muscle that tore and those things can happen. Very unfortunate for Kennard and the Trojans. Maybe that unfortunate luck will be left behind when the team moves into the McKay Center weight room.
Would you now pick Lane and staff, over PC and staff?
I'm giving serious thought to your question and that should say something. I'm still going to pick 2004 Carroll and that staff but Kiffin is earning consideration, check back with me at the end of the year and I might have a different answer.
Garry - have you heard any more movement on the NCAA investigation of Oregon? When do you think they will be penalized?Fight On!
I haven't heard anything more than the rumors we've all heard on the boards. For several weeks now it's been "something is coming, something is coming" but obviously it hasn't yet. I do think they will get hit and it will be tough, just not sure how tough.
Garry, how does the USC staff go about keeping in touch with other 2013 prospects now that they have no scholarships available? Do you think they tell them they have a pecking order if we get decommits later?
Sure, they are as honest as they can be with the players about the possibilities. Anything can happen in recruiting and it would be wise for the staff to stay in contact with other recruits just in case.
What are USC 's chances with Leon McQuay III?
It's interesting, McQuay has consistently kept the Trojans on his list of top 3 schools for a while now. If I had to guess, I think he ends up elsewhere but there's no doubt there is mutual interest between Leon and the Trojans
I found it interesting that some in the media gave the Trojans a hard time for taking Silas Redd into the fold. I don't recall anyone feeling bad for USC when we had players poached from our roster a few years back. Do you think it was a double standard Garry?
Sure, some of it is toward USC but more of it is toward Kiffin. Lots of people like to get in their dig at Kiffin in the process of talking about a story.
With addition of Redd, and incoming freshman Davis/Isaac do you see Tre Madden moving back to OLB?
No, I think Tre stays at RB. The coaches clearly loved what they saw in his potential as a RB during his brief stint in spring ball.
How much focus shifts from the 2013 recruiting class to 2014? Is it still too early to heavily focus on 2014 with signing day still six months away?
The coaches won't completely take their eye off the 2013 class but I do think the fact that the class is full means that they can spend a little more time on 2014. Of course, that class if off to a great start with three quality offensive linemen.
What is the status of Dallas Kelley? Why has he not been a big contributor?
Good kid who can hit but he just has physical limitations when it comes to playing linebacker at USC. He's not as big or strong or fast as other options so I would be surprised if he earns any significant time.
Where do you see Goodman, and Robinson twins ending up at? Will we still recruit them?
The Trojans are still recruiting all three of those players. If they don't end up at USC, I think UCLA is a team that could benefit a lot, watch out for Washington as well.
Do you see the recruiting class changing much from now till NSD?? Also can Tyler Foreman be in the same discussion as Cravens, Hawkins and the other elite DB's?
Nice call on Foreman. In most years he is an elite safety but too many other talented players at his position this year. He can play!!!! I don't see the class changing much.
What number will Silas Redd wear for USC?
nothing updated on the USC roster yet but #25 is available for an offensive player (Bowman has it on defense). Silas wore #25 at Penn State.
Hey Gary! How long till Lane Kiffin stops getting blames for UT recent failures. Did he really leave that university in bad shape???
Lane had that program headed in a good direction and I think his sudden and abrupt departure had more to do with the bad feelings than anything else. At some point, Derek Dooley is either going to get it done or he's not and it will have nothing to do with Lane Kiffin.
Garry, how is Leonard Williams looking so far this summer? I'm terrified of our depth on the d-line and think we're going to need a couple inexperienced guys to step up this year. Do you think Williams has the ability to contribute on either either the interior or outside of the line this season? Thanks for the chat!
He's been impressive. At 270 pounds I think his more likely opportunity will come at end, especially with the Kennard injury. Once he bulks up a little more it wouldn't surprise me at all to see him move inside.
Who in your mind starts opposite Horton at DE? I liked what I saw from Breslin at the spring game
My guess is Townsend but I wouldn't rule out Breslin at all. His experience at the JC level should be a big benefit for Breslin.
Is it possible for USC to pick up more than 18 verbal commits prior to signing day, thus creating a situation where USC would have to cut members of the recruiting class?
In a word, yes. These coaches will keep recruiting other players and if there is movement in the current class then they could easily end up filling the spots with players who aren't currently committed.
what incomming freshman will get the most paying time on offense and defense
Agholor is a pretty obvious choice on offense. On defense, I'll say Williams and Ruffin as freshmen but two other newcomer transfers - Shaw and Bowman - will also get a lot of time.
Garry, Any chance uses Madden as a medical redshirt and give up that schollie to Redd? is that even possible? Thanks.
Not possible because a medical redshirt means that the player is done playing football. The school is allowed to pay for his education but he can't play for the school again.
What 2014 QB's are the USC coaches going after??
Keller Chryst from Palo Alto, Brandon Dawkins from Oaks Christian and Kyle Allen from Arizona are three names to remember
whats the chances antaun woods starts the first game at nt....
Pretty good. It will either be Woods or JR Tavai, I would go with Woods right now.
Do you see any recruit might consider a prefered walk on schollie?
Not yet. The recruits SC is showing interest in right now all have offers from other big schools. A preferred walk-on candidate will likely come after signing day if a player didn't get other scholarship offers he wanted and the option of walking on at SC is more attractive.
Did Lane or Coach O. consider recruiting any DL from Penn St. or was the RB position the only one they were looking to fill?
Lane said on Colin Cowherd show today that they looked at the Penn State roster and determined that Redd was the only player they wanted to go after.
Garry, what position do you see Prevot ending up at? He seems a bit light to play end. Linebacker perhaps?
I wouldn't rule out linebacker at all. He said he knows he could end up at either spot and he sounds ok with it.
Any concerns about potential recruiting violations by Wittek in connection with Redd? I've heard/read insinuations about this.
Very minor. Maybe there is a minor violation attached to it but it won't be much.
You've said that "medical redshirt" is one of the possibilities for gaining the scholarship for Redd, but you've said that Kennard's possible med redshirt couldn't be used. What's an example of a med redshirt that would free up a scholie?
The big difference is that Kennard would want to come back, at least that is what he's saying so far. If someone like Marquis Simmons had a neck injury that wasn't healing or if Torin Harris shoulder was too much of an issue, those are what I was referring to.
Does USC get credit for 2010 season having scholarship total below the 75 Max (during sanctions)? It would seem to me that year should count as one of the three seasons as the free agency created by the sanctions led to the reduced numbers.
No. During the appeal, USC staggered the penalty phases to their benefit and one of the items in there was that the roster limits hit in this time. I like your thinking though.
If USC gets a commit from an Elite Player like VH3 or Tunsil or another.Would they pull a scolarship from one of their current commits?I don't think they would but was still wondering
They might not need to "pull", what happens if another player decides to head elsewhere on their own? Lots of potential scenarios in recruiting which is why it makes sense to continue talking to guys like Tunsil.
Out of the three 2014 qb's (Chryst, Dawkins, Allen), who do you take if you had only 1 choice?
Thanks everyone for coming, that's all we have time for today.
