Chat with Michael Collins

Michael Collins
  (3:00 PM)

Furyk can't close, Keegan verifies, and Tiger confuses again. Time for the fastest hour in golf!! Ready? Bring it!!If you're Cap't Love... give me two of your picks.Mahan, Stricker, Furyk, Fowler, Snedeker, D.Johnson...?

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

When will we see Golf in the Summer Olympics?

Michael Collins
  (3:01 PM)

2016 in Brazil

Stew Baxter (Zionsville, Indiana)

I see Jerry Kelly is the 2nd alternate to get in the field... What are his chances of getting in?....Are there any players unlikely to start this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:03 PM)

Well I just got here myself a few hours ago so I haven't heard anything yet. But I know when it comes to tournaments, guys do not wanna pull out for any reason. It's the one time you'll play hurt.

JT (D.C.)

Is Tiger going to remember how to putt this week

Michael Collins
  (3:04 PM)

Seems like every week it's something, doesn't it. He's like a regular tour pro, except when he has flashes he wins.

charles (cleveland)

hey mike have you seen tiger at kiawah yet? how's he looking? and what are your thoughts on the course?

Michael Collins
  (3:06 PM)

Haven't seen him yet. The course has NO protection from the wind. Was playing firm last week but they've had some big rain come thru the past night or two and it's a bit softer. Looks awesome though

Nick (WI)

With Furyk and Stricker probably locks, who else would you pick with the last two Ryder Cup spots? I'd have a hard time taking Hunter, with his poor recent form and how it ended for him in 2010.

Harrison (New York)

As of Today, name who your captains' picks for both Ryder Cup squads.

Michael Collins
  (3:07 PM)

Furyk, Stricker, Fowler, Van Pelt is who I'd pick right now, today

Shoshana (Boston)

What part of game do you think will be most important this week? (length off tee, irons, wedge, chipping, putting etc)

Michael Collins
  (3:09 PM)

Irons. Big time. Gonna have to really flight the ball well and not be afraid to hit little punch shots. Which means your ball striking better be really solid.

Patrick (Philadelphia, PA)

Alright, so we've seen Furyk gack two away in finger-nails-on-a-chalk-board style. Does he shoot a top-10 this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:10 PM)

So hard after a loss like that... top twenty maybe

Shoshana (Boston)

Stricker and Furyk are locks. The pts system looks a little silly when it has Mahan behind Phil. So does Phil make team on points?

Michael Collins
  (3:11 PM)

very silly, but I think Mahan makes it after this week and Phil is outside looking in.

Dan (Minneapolis)

Hi Michael, thanks for your time today.I'm in a PGA draft pool and need to pick 4 golfers with the best chance to win. What are your best bets?

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

Piercy, Van Pelt, Noh, and watch out for McIlroy this week. But this tourney normally has a first time major winner, which is why I'm dropping those names on ya

Michael Collins
  (3:15 PM)

except of course for McIlroy

g.p. (nd)

Michael, seems like DLIII plays well on Pete Dye layouts. Any chances he could contend this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:16 PM)

Wouldn't be surprised by a top 15, but with all the Ryder Cup stuff going on he's gonna have a tough time focusing on just golf

Casey (Salt Lake)

Do you see Lucas Glover playing well this week in his home state?

Michael Collins
  (3:18 PM)

Not the way he's played so far this year, but sometimes when things aren't going good, home cooking is the recipe for success. Most times in golf... homes games stink, because of all the ticket requests and "entertaining' you end up having to do.

Shoshana (Boston)

Everyone goes hot and cold with the putter (look at Luke last wk after Thurs), but Tiger can't score if he doesn't putt well, thanks to his non-existent wedge game

Michael Collins
  (3:19 PM)

true dat!

g.p. (nd)

Although furyk has let two tournies slip away this year, they still need his grit on the ryder cup team, don't they?

Michael Collins
  (3:20 PM)

Stroke play is so much different than match play. If he can walk and swing, he's on my team. He will beat you mentally so bad, you'll beat yourself. It's what makes him great.

Spencer (NY, NY)

Any word on how the PGA is setting up the golf course? Can we expect a score like +5 to win the tournament if its hot and windy?

Michael Collins
  (3:22 PM)

If it's really windy (20-30 mph) expect +1 to even par to win. If the wind stays reasonable (10-20) look for -4. No wind... well it's anyone's guess

Patrick (Philadelphia, PA)

What make the PGA easily the most under-appreciated major?

Michael Collins
  (3:25 PM)

I don't know that it is depending on who you ask, this year is the first time they've had over 100 World Ranked players in the field (103). That's stronger than any major. I think just because they have so many "no name" winners and first timers that it seems to knock a little bit of luster off. But that's the draw for me.

Mike (New York)

do you see an under the radar guy winning this week or will a top of the leaderboard regular win on this course?

Michael Collins
  (3:26 PM)

Under the radar guy.

Doug (GA)

So how brutal was traffic out to Kiawah this morning? It's only gonna get worse as the week goes on.

Michael Collins
  (3:28 PM)

I had to park in public parking and the guys I rode the bus in with said they weren't coming this weekend because it's gonna be such a nightmare.I was told to expect an hour commute every morning and I don't do well in traffic.

Shoshana (Boston)

You have to take Hunter a) he's actually good in team play b) he has two wins this year, including in what's that - matchplay? oh yeah that might be important in a RC

Michael (Charleston)

I have played the Ocean Course a number of times. The long hitter who stays in the fairway this week wins. I really like Dustin Johnson.

Tom (Sun City, AZ)

What are Stricker's chances of winning this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:30 PM)

At first I thought he wasn't long enough but he's been playing so well lately that I just can't count him out. I'd say his chances are better than average.

Tom (L.A.)

It's hard to imagine Phil not making the team, but then again, he's not the best Ryder Cupper ever and he really has no game right now.

Michael Collins
  (3:31 PM)

exactly why I wouldn't make him a captains pick if he doesn't make it on points

Ed (Long Island)

Players talk a lot about the different grasses on the greens. How important is that? If the stimp is running at 13 or whatever they set it at, it's 13 for all types of grass, no?

Michael Collins
  (3:32 PM)

yeah, stimp is speed of greens, a 13 on bermuda is a 13 on bent. both are ridiculously fast

Tim (SF)

How nails was Keegs on 18 yesterday. He saw Furyk's oil leaking and then jarred that putt to just tighten the screws even more. Got a lotta respect for that...and a lot for how forthright Furyk was afterwards too. Compelling stuff.

Michael Collins
  (3:34 PM)

It's why I'm such a fan of the game. Every week there's different drama! And seems like every week someone stands in front of the camera and has to man up for the win or the loss.

Tim (SF)

grain baby. grain. :-)

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

yes, bermuda has grain, and bent doesn't, but when talking about stimp grass is not taken into account

RYan (San Diego)

If Phil didnt qualify on points, would you select him for the team?

Michael Collins
  (3:35 PM)

No way

Ricky Fowler (Oceanside)

How are my chances this week?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

after last week? Not good, but I loved the Twitter exchange between you and Lee Westwood.

Patrick (Philadelphia, PA)

Can Keegan become this generation's Larry Nelson? Doesn't get too much publicity, but when he wins, they are big time events?

Michael Collins
  (3:36 PM)

Great analogy. Never thought about it that way but I like where you took it.

Doug (GA)

Speed is speed Michael, but as a (former) caddie you KNOW the grain has a whole lot to do with putting, especially on Bermuda in the South. That being said, what kind of grain will the players be subjected to in the paspalum on the Ocean Course's greens?

Michael Collins
  (3:40 PM)

My bad y'all. I went back and read Ed's question again and I read it wrong the first time. I thought he was just asking about how they determine the stimp reading.Of course different grass will affect speed if there's grain. It also affects break significantly also. This will be my first look at paspalum in a major, the greens look fantastic but I haven't seen a lot of putts on them.

Tim (SF)

How good is this Nationweb.com kid Kohles...from "nobody" to 2 time winner in 2 weeks??? Anyone see this coming?

Michael Collins
  (3:42 PM)

Maybe his family, and even they didn't see THIS! Two starts, two wins as a pro debut.... million to one and now that he knows he can win and so does everyone else... watch out next year when he gets to the big stage

Brandon (Utah)

Who are you rooting for this week at Kiawah?

Michael Collins
  (3:44 PM)

Bob Sowards and Mike Small. Would love to see a real PGA Professional (not PGA TOUR pro) win this thing.

Chip (Stees)

What's with the Rickie Fowler/Dufner twitter feud?

Michael Collins
  (3:45 PM)

That got kinda ugly over the weekend. Don't know where it went sour but... gonna have to do some digging this week and see where it started.

Tim (SF)

USA Women are behind 1-0 to Canada in Olympic soccer semis right now. May have to cut this short to go destroy my television....

Michael Collins
  (3:46 PM)

worst part is they're playing it on the HUGE screen here in the media center... I've thrown my headphones twice at the little tv on my desk!

Patrick (Philadelphia, PA)

Over/under on club pros who make the cut?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

20 in the field, 2 make the cut

Ed (Long Island)

If Phil falls out of the automatic qualifiers, do the TV execs that are airing the Ryder Cup put in a call to make sure he gets one of the captain's picks to help with ratings as he draws eyeballs to the screen?

Michael Collins
  (3:47 PM)

The way he's playing?! NOBODY is watching that.

Michael (Charleston)

Any truth to the rumor that Dos Equis has offered you the "Most Interesting Man in the World" gig?

Michael Collins
  (3:48 PM)

No truth to that one. If there's a "Least Interesting Man" commercial...!

Bubba Watson (Kiawah Island)

If I keep in play can I win?

Michael Collins
  (3:49 PM)

Yes, but controlling the "curves" in wind is REALLY tough as you know.

Tim (SF)

Did you just tell Rick'y' Fowler to stick to tweeting this week? Talk about thinking someone has no chance to win.... LOL

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

LOL!!! Not what I meant, but I guess it could be read that way.

Nick (Mass)

Can we expect Keegan to perform decently even though he is defending his title AND won over the weekend? That's a lot going on for the young man.

Michael Collins
  (3:50 PM)

REALLY tough to do... I'd say too much.

Tim (SF)

Speaking of Dufner...he's quietly (sorta quietly?) posting some T-10s...British, now Firestone. Gotta think he's got a big shot this week. Very cool customer.

Michael Collins
  (3:51 PM)

He's my big under the radar guy this week.

Michael (Cincinnati)

For those of you who missed it, Lee Westwood couldn't keep it under 80 on Saturday after watching Rickie Fowler do the same at Firestone on Friday.

Jeff (SC)

Kiawah is normally 35 minute ride from Charleston anyway. 1 hour is not all that bad.

Jeff (SC)

I am 20 minutes fro Kiawah and at work LAME Will be there Friday and Saturday though. My question is What are chances a SC local such as Haas or DJ or two gloves tkaes home the title?

Michael Collins
  (3:54 PM)

DJ's got the best shot, but I saw Haas down at a grocery store when I got here and he looked really chill. He may be a strong one too.

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

USA scores... 1-1 vs Canada 2nd half if ya care.

Shoshana (Boston)

New rule, if you're in the top 10 in owgr, you can't be picked as under the radar

Michael Collins
  (3:55 PM)

noted.

Tim (SF)

Real question....Does Tommy Two Gloves keep the gloves on to hoist the Wannamaker? Gotta say he does right?

Michael Collins
  (3:56 PM)

wouldn't be right if he took them off right away!

g.p. (nd)

I agree with you on how Phil has been playing, but I think DL3 would pick him just because of him being a fan favorite. How big of a role will that play in the decision if he doesn't qualify, and do you think DL3 would take him for that reason?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

You can't take a guy because he'd sell tickets. that's not the captains job, it's to win. if phil doesn't make the team is there someone else playing better that would give us a better chance to win? Yes. That's where the friendship and business line is drawn.

Nathan (of Tulsa)

I love BVP contending this week. Thoughts?

Michael Collins
  (3:58 PM)

Love his chances at getting that first major here.

Nathan (of Tulsa)

WOuld you like more club pros in the field?

Michael Collins
  (3:59 PM)

absolutely. this is/was there championship.

Brian (Chicago)

Huge Phil fan here and I wouldn't even take him. He can't drive the ball straight at all and Medinah requires accuracy off the tee.

Patrick (Philadelphia, PA)

Stricker, Westwood, Donald... best chance of winning their first major this week?

Michael Collins
  (4:00 PM)

Of the three I'd say, Stricker, then Donald, and take Westwood off the board.

Michael Collins
  (4:02 PM)

Hot dawg!!! That went really fast again. Thanks all, but guess what?I'm doing the GolfCast starting Thursday and going everyday thru Sunday so jump on and hang out for every round this week!As always: ESPNCaddie@gmail.com is the email and @ESPNCaddie is the Twitter!Same time next week too!!Have a great week all
