What's up? In Oxnard with the Cowboys' training camp, so I'm ready for all of your football questions as well as anything you need to know about Yu and the rangers because I've been making phone calls to see what's up. Let's roll
I'm not asking about who will be on the waiver wire in 3 weeks....who would be a solid pick up of the available WR's right now?
No one. Anyone worth a flip is already in camp with someone. Patience is the key. U give the young guys here all of the reps and see how can legitimately earn a role. Then when guys start getting cut, you swoop in and grab one. You had no idea who Laurent Robinson was a year ago. They'll add the same kind of dude.
Is there any chance that the Cowboys might bring in a veteran Center within the next few weeks? Also, does Raymond Radway have a legit shot at the #3 Wide out spot?
There's a chance, but they really Costa's potential because he has everything you want in a player except size. Ultimately, he probably needs to be a quality backup. Bernadeau will get some work at C, but I just can't see using a dude who has never started an NFL game at C
How does brandon carr look and who has surprised you in camp. And is claiborne a day one starter
Carr has been outstanding, but let's see what he looks like against opponents such as San Diego next week and Oakland in the preseason game. Claiborne has to get on the field before he can be a starter
What do you think of Ryan Dempster on the Rangers Pitching Staff for the Rest of the Year?
it's a lot better option that running Roy Oswalt out there start after start and watching his pitches get crushed. Dempster was the best pitcher in the NL THIS season. No reason to think he can't be effective for Rangers the next 2 months
Why the hate w/ TO? You have said on numerous occasions he is too slow and old at this point, but then he goes out and runs a 4.45 40 which most guys in their 20s couldn't run. He had 9 tds his last season in the NFL, you need to give the guy some credit despite his personal failings.
there's a difference between running a 40 in a straight line and doing the cutting and getting in and out of breaks that a receiver must do. It's not hate. I can't stand it when that word is misused. hate implies UNFAIR criticism. Nothing unfair about saying a 38-year-old WR coming of a torn ACL, who didn't play in the NFL last season isn't going to be a factor on an NFL team. Add his divisive personality and it's pretty easy to see why he was on the street when training camp began. He received no bonus and a minimum salary, so let's not act like the Seahawks expect him to be anything more than a complementary player - if he makes the team
Do the Rangers chances for postseason success lie on the arms of Holland and Darvish? They need to regain form or it could be a quick trip out of the playoffs.
hope not based on what we've seen lately. The Rangers, to me, don't have anything close to the pitching it requires to make a lengthy playoff run
Why are the Rangers keeping Oswalt around? Do they think they will need him based on how bad the starting rotation is looking at the moment?
They owe him $4.5 million regardless. I probably would've released him, but he pitched well out of the BP and if refuses to pitch again, they might ultimately be able to release him without paying him for conduct detrimental to the club or something like that. Just a guess. If he pitches well, there won't be any issues
Is Wash scared to take Mike Young out of the lineup no matter what? I thought the Rangers were the team of accountability or does that not apply to the longest tenured player?
Young's track record gives him the benefit of the doubt. But with Olt, Moreland and Napoli as options at 1B and DH, Young will start to lose some ABs unless he can do a better job hitting. Wash tends to give his veterans a lot of time to find a rhythm before he benches them. He has moved young around the BO lately.
I dont trust the rangers do you?
nope. Not if we're talking the playoffs. Don't trust their pitching. Or Hamilton right now. They're so inconsistent it's going to be hard to hold off the Angels, though their BP has imploded recently
Do you think TCU has any shot a conference championship?
Sure, but this team is younger than it has been of late. It'll be in the hunt because Gary Patterson has a good program.
Do you think thsi recend slupm has any change in whether Josh will be back with the rangers next year?
nope. The Rangers will offer him a deal - and he'll either accept it or reject it.They're not getting into a bidding war
Why didnt the rangers look to add a guy out of the pen
they might still add a situational LH in August. If healthy, the pen is fine with Nathan, Adams, Ogando
JJT you been around this organization for a long time. Do you see the difference in the type of players that Jason Garret is bring into the locker room?
Don't you? He wants high-motor, high-energy guys who are competitive - even if they're not quite as physically talented as some other dudes. He wants guys with character and makeup who won't wilt in the 4Q and who will show up in the 4Q and Dec-Jan. It's a process to change out the roster
You think UTA will get a football team in a few seasons?
I can't say I've spent any time thinking about that. Sorry.
Isn't it a little disconcerting that year after year, the Cowboys have major question marks with the same spots: interior OL, WR depth, Safety and pass rush (outside of Ware)?
that's one of the reasons you don't want five head coaches since 1998. It affects every element of your organization. Stability is huge
Blessings JJT - Thanks for hosting today's chat. Do you think Mike Jenkins's spot on the roster could be in jeopardy if his rehab extends through the rest of the preseason? How long will the team be willing to wait for him to get back on the field?
nope. The cowboys need him to play and he needs to play to get paid in the off-season. He'll be back sometime. The doctors will determine when
Is it encouraging that the Cowboys seems to be getting younger across the board? I don't know how good some of the guys are, but at least they won't be trotting out too many 30+ yr olds,
that's why you want to see Barry Church instead of Brodney Pool. If you're gonna lose do it with young guys. If mistakes are gonna be made, let young guys do it
JJT love your work. Thanks for providing an unbiased opinion. All the talk the last few days seems to be about 3rd receiver but O-line seems to be a bigger problem right now. What options does Dallas have to fix that at this point?
none. They gotta hope Livings and Bernadeau are the players they thought they were and that they can help Phil Costa. I'd say C or G will be high on the priority list in FA or the draft next season. U can't really be an elite team until your offensive line is a strength not a weakness
I din't know people paid attention to baseball after training camps open
The didn't until about 2010 - no matter what my baseball critics say...lol
I'm confused. I thought Garrett was the OC and Callahan was the OL coach. Is Jerry trying to limit Garrett's offensive responsibilities?
Callahan is the OC and is in charge of the running game. Garrett will still call the plays
u can find me on Twitter at @JJT_ESPNDallas
Is D Murray a top 5 RB this year?
Do you think Claiborne will practice on Thursday or has a week become two weeks?
@ Nate: Demarco has to stay healthy for 16 games and show up when it matters most. he has the potential, but we need to see him do it before we can even put him in this conversation@POE: no idea. We have to see how his knee responds
Who at training camp has made you stop and say "Wow, now this guy is really going to exceed expectations" or "he has really impressed me more than I expected"?
CB Mario Butler, but he's the 5th CB at best. It's still early in camp. Dez looks terrific, but let's wait until the games start
how does Tony Romo look? is he showing any signs of slowing down?
he's completed about 75 percent of his passes in practice. He looks great, but he wasn't the problem last year. U better hope his OL holds up
Does Garrett seem less robotic this year? I know he will never be Mr. Personality but he appears to be more at ease and comfortable in his role as head coach of the Cowboys.
I told him the other day that he was giving some really insightful answers in TC, and the casual conversations after practice have been just as enlightening. He's understanding how to walk the tightrope between getting his message out and giving information without feeling like he's giving out trade secrets
Great to see you in chat again Mr. Taylor - As a Sooner would like to know how DeMarco Murray is looking and it also seems like James Hanna is looking a little better than first thought ? Your thoughts sir .
he's been fine in practice, especially since John Phillips' injury has provided a him with more reps in practice. Gotta wait until preseason to see how he performs against strangers
Are Marcus Spears days as a Cowboy coming to an end? He seems like a really great dude but I got to think he's behind Hatcher, Lissemore, Crawford and even Coleman and Geathers.
It's really more about the young guys than it is about Spears and Kenyon Coleman. If you're not gonna win the SB this year - and they're not - then it's better to go with young guys with potential and high ceilings as opposed to vets who have no room for improvement. I wouldn't be shocked if each was released and signed by other clubs
If you had to guess, who will out up the better season this year, Bryant or Austin?
MIles if his hamstrings allow him to play at a normal level
JJT, do you have a pair of pants I can borrow? My wife Sanya is wearing them all in my household right now.
win a gold medal and it trumps 2 SB rings. Sorry.
JJT.. Please don't tell me the Cowboys are seriously going to enter the season w/o looking for a vet at the 53 man cut at WR. It's like the center position, a must fix in my opinion. Your thoughts?
wrote a column about that on ESPNDAllas.com yesterday. Go peep it for an in-depth answer
Why are you always so negative?
maybe you only look for the negative.
JJT - About T.O., do you agree that the media's impression of him has spiraled out of control over the years? Sure he gave everyone a lot to talk about, but when you compare him and Randy Moss, they seem to be neck-and-neck from the perspective of being a locker room cancer. Moss eventually became a cancer on every single team he has played for, and since TO's Cowboy days his teammates universally claim he was a good locker room guy. Now, please dont get me wrong, I do not like TO, and as a Seahawks fan I wish they didnt sign him, but its odd hearing the media say Moss is a great guy and TO the worst humam being in history, when they are very much the same. Retort?
nope. Don't blame the media because he's eventually torn apart every team he's ever been on when he was an impact player. He's a narcissist. He's charismatic and he can be a leader. That can be a dangerous combo
Which Mavs rookie do you feel will make the biggest impact, I like what I've heard about James, mature defensive minded and can score inside?
none. They're all just guys to me until proved otherwise based on what i've read. We'll see what happens when season starts. I have low expectations, so it won't take much to impress me
Does Wash not playing Olt at DH because he is too you make sense?
it doesn't have to make sense. He gave us a reason whether we like it or not. My suspicion is he doesn't want a young guy having that much time to analyze each and every at bat because there's an adjustment coming to the big leagues and he'll have some bad stretches
You take the Joy out of the HOPE of Spring Training.
not my job to provide hope or faith or optimism. That's what team web sites are for. My job is to deal in reality. No more, no less. You can either deal with it or not cause I'm not changing.
If the Cowboy's do well over the next year or two and Rob Ryan gets a head coaching job somewhere, is there someone on staff now that would be the next DC or will they have to go outside the organization?
that's a big if, but I'd say Brian Baker would be a candidate or Matt Eberflus, if he didn't leave. That's a long way off right now
How does Sean Lee compare to other great linebackers in Cowboy history? The guy has been a stud since college and now is completely healthy from his ACL. Do you think he can be all time great in Big D?
dude has played 2 seasons. He doesn't compare at all to the great LBs in franchise history. By the end of his career, he will. Let's give him a few years to establish himself
Do you think Felix Jones got too big over time and lost his primary strength, i.e. speed?
On espn I heard Heath Miller say that because the cowboys had 18 hurt that they was not mentaly tough ex M Auston. Do you see lack of mental toughness or did someome just stick microphone in a know it alls face?
how would Heath Miller know? I'll leave it at that.
The Olympics could have had better coverage in my opinion but they were and always are great to watch . Boxing sure has become a disappointment though. i was 6 when Sugar Ray and that Awesome cast of 7 gold medalist won. Have you had anytime to watch them? What was your favorite this time?
nope. I like the men's and women's sprints. Not much else excites me
You didnt respond to my point, and I never blamed the media Mr. Defensive, but thats okay. Ill simplify this. Do you think TO is that much worse than Randy Moss when it comes to being a cancer in the locker room? The media (breathe please) portays one as a great locker room guy, and the other as the worst teammate in history. In a vacuum, do you think that potrayal of each is consistent?
i've never heard Moss portrayed as a great locker room dude. The media doesn't dictate who teams sign or don't sign. They sign dudes based on their potential to perform
Do you think Bruce Carter will be able to beat Dan Connor for the spot next to Lee?
he better. The Cowboys need more speed and athleticism on the field. Connor would be better as a quality backup
Do you think Bill Callahan's coaching the OL is significantly better than HH?
too early to tell.
What's the best Spring Training prank you have witnessed?
none recently. Back in the day, Mark Tuinei left a dead fish in I think Daryl Johnston's bed under his pillow. I couldn't swear to it because it has been a while
Which highly drafted player is more likely to end up being a bust when it's all said and done, Bryant or Claiborne?
bryant only because of his baggage.
the chat has been great today. A lot of quality questions, but I gotta go talk to rob Ryan and practice is just about over. I'll be back in Dallas when we chat next week. Be blessed. If you have further questions, hit me on twitter @JJT_ESPNDallas or on my Facebook Fan Page Jean-Jacques Taylor. Peace
You are intentionally being difficult, which is why people ask you why you are so angry every single week. You are 0-2 in answering my actual question. Why you chose to ignore it is odd. Its a question about the media's consistency, or lack thereof, when labeling players, negatively or positively.
I tried to answer your question twice. I certainly don't have to avoid answering your question. If I didn't want to deal with it, I wouldn't have clicked on it. Perhaps your question was bad since I apparently missed the point. It happens.
