Chat with David Newton

David Newton
  (12:10 PM)

Sorry for delay. Technical problems as has been the case all day. Let's get right to it.

@LoganReardon20 (MA)

What do you think are Jeff's chase chances now? Before Indy you told me 40-60...i think now its about 70-30! Go Jeff!

David Newton
  (12:10 PM)

Definitely improved. For all the bad luck Jeff has had this season, that was an incredibly lucky break on Sunday. Not only do I see him making it now, I see him as a legitimate championship contender.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Will Tommy Baldwin Racing put Ron Fellows in the #10 Chevrolet in the Finger Lakes 355 at the Glen?

David Newton
  (12:11 PM)

I would. It's about good finishes and nothing else now, although if NASCAR does away with the top 35 rule all this maneuvering will have been for naugh.

Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)

Is the Pennsylvania 400 the First time in NASCAR History that there were Fans Killed & Injured Due to Weather?

David Newton
  (12:12 PM)

I'm pretty sure for lightning. We don't have records for way back when there could have been deaths around the track due to weather. It was tragic. Still hard to believe it happened.

Aaron (Bath, ME)

With that win finally out of the way, the 24 team could easily reel off another win or two before Chase time. Agree?

David Newton
  (12:13 PM)

He's pretty good at Watkins Glen. Heck he's pretty good everywhere. This team already had speed. Now you toss in confidence, you never know. But keep in mind they still were a fifth or sixth place car at best. Johnson remains the Hendrick car to beat.

Brad (Cleveland)

Your picks now for the chase. Thanks.

David Newton
  (12:14 PM)

Current top 10, Gordon and Kahne. If you remember, I never eliminated Gordon when others had wins. I just felt he needed to win at Indy or NH to get on a roll. Never too late.

Chris (Hudson,NC)

Thank you rain! Chances Gordon pulls off a 5th title this year?

David Newton
  (12:16 PM)

If he makes the Chase, I'd say 60-40 he can win it all. His chief competition still will come from the 48 and probably the 17, with the 88 lurking.

Marion (SC)

David, Your thoughts on the possibility of Furniture Row Racing to Dodge w/ Kurt Busch & will it happen ?

David Newton
  (12:17 PM)

To me it's the best solution for Dodge to remain in the sport. They have to have a driver capable of winning races, and Kurt would give them that. That Dodge has been so quiet is worrisome. But as you may have read here on Sunday Front Row is ready to pull the trigger if Dodge is.

Marion (SC)

David.BK said he would like some input on a teammate for next season in the 22 any idea on who he would like ?

David Newton
  (12:18 PM)

I asked him that. He said "the best driver." If Sam Hornish does well the rest of the season he'll be the top choice. After that it could be anyone from Logano to Newman to Bayne.

Steven (Kingsport)

Two best cars in the race, yesterday were the 48 and the 88 after they were taken out by misfortune, the 24 and the 5 finished 1/2. Every team in the garage is playing catchup to Hendrick right now.

David Newton
  (12:20 PM)

Pretty much. As I wrote in my NASCAR/Olympic column that was in great part tongue in cheek, if this was an Olympic sport HMS would be the odds-on favorite to win the gold. It's the racing version of the Dream Team.

Larry (MI)

It appears that Gibbs will go into the Chase with only one car. What are the chances of a Hendrick like shakeup in the offseason?

David Newton
  (12:21 PM)

Adding Matt Kenseth is a good place to start. He's one of the best drivers in the garage. Securing Logano to a fourth car would help as well. I still wouldn't rule him out of the Chase. Another win for him and he would move ahead of Gordon and Kyle.

Doug (Phoenix, AZ)

I'm not buying JJ saying he had a flat RR tire. Why doesn't he own up to making a mistake? Took out a legit shot at winning for Kenseth.

David Newton
  (12:23 PM)

No need not to believe Johnson on this one. He's admitted to mistakes before and if this simply was a mistake he would have said so on Sunday. It happens. It was unfortunate for him but an unbelievable break for Gordon. And no, it wasn't a conspiracy to get Gordon in Victory Lane.

Kristin (NYC)

Other than Gordon, it was nice to see Edwards and Regan Smith finish in the top 10.

David Newton
  (12:23 PM)

Regan particularly. Chatted with him before the race. He believes his new crew chief and other changes made to the team have helped a great deal. He wishes he'd gotten a chance to work with Todd Berrier two years ago.

Steven (Kingsport)

Stevie and Junior were very confident in going to Watkins Glen with the same car, they had at Pocono on the radio after the race.

David Newton
  (12:24 PM)

They've been fast everywhere they've gone this season, so they should be confident. Wouldn't surprise me to see them get another top 10. Shame his streak of making every lap this season had to end. A cool stat.

Kristin (NYC)

Seems like a few people were not happy with JJ on the final restart

David Newton
  (12:25 PM)

Everybody was going all out for position with the storm on the way. They knew that would decide the race. Even if Johnson hadn't gotten into Kenseth something else crazy might have happened. That it happened with two such veteran drivers, though, was a bit of a surprise.

Marion (SC)

David, One more lol, any idea when RPM will announce their manufacturer and who do u think they will be any rumors about the driver line up ?

David Newton
  (12:27 PM)

I'm hearing maybe Michigan in two weeks, but nothing is set in stone. I still see them staying with Ford. And with several top drivers available they should look strongly at one of them over Aric. Nothing against Almirola, but top talent wins in this business and they need to win at RPM.

John (Monroe WA)

AUTO UPDATE PLEASE!

David Newton
  (12:27 PM)

Did before the chat started.

Chris (Richmond)

Why is Bayne in the open seat conversations? I thought it was understood that Roush has him under contract and isn't looking to let him go.

David Newton
  (12:28 PM)

He is under contract, and scheduled to drive a full NW schedule or Roush and part-time Cup for the Wood Brothers. But Ford would like to get the Daytona 500 in a Cup car fulltime, and with Penske coming to Ford it makes a little sense.

Tracy (CT)

Heard BKR released Parker today. Any info where he ends up?

David Newton
  (12:28 PM)

Haven't heard that. Been focused on the lightning fatality at Pocono.

David Newton
  (12:31 PM)

This just in. Brad K has decided to drive in his truck for the next race at Michigan. Doesn't mention letting Parker go. It's a home track for BK, so maybe just for that one.

Mike (MI)

If the rain would have come before the half way point would they have picked up the race from where they left off the next day?

David Newton
  (12:31 PM)

That is an option. Depending on how many laps were run, they also have the option to start over.

dz (new mexico)

the race officials call the race rather quickly on sunday. any reason why? because some rain delays take hours.

David Newton
  (12:32 PM)

The storm had set in, and there would have not been time to dry the track to complete the race had they waited it out.

Alan (Columbus, OH)

Hi Dave! My condolences to the people affected by the storms at Pocono. What are your predictions for the rest of Rowdy's season given yesterday's events?

David Newton
  (12:34 PM)

All of our thoughts and prayers should be with the families. As for kyle, the way things have gone for him his fans may need to pray a bit. Really not looking good, but he easily could win at any of the remaining tracks and get back in this thing. He could win two or three times.

FYI (here)

Bob Pockrass?@bobpockrassParker Kligerman has been released from Brad Keselowski Racing. #nascar

David Newton
  (12:34 PM)

Thanks. That wasn't in the statement I got.

Alan (Columbus, OH)

Hi Dave! If Rowdy misses the Chase, or if he makes it but continues the trend of poor Chase performances, is Dave Rogers on the hot seat and who would be his replacement?

David Newton
  (12:36 PM)

Hard to imagine. He's had a couple of changes over the past few years and he really likes Dave. Sometimes patience and continuity helps. Dale Jr stuck with Letarte after a slow start.

Damon (Dallas, TX)

Have to give props to all the young talent at the Nationwide race this weekend. They were impressive filling in for the Cup regulars. Johanna Long raced better than her finish indicated. Also Danica had her best short track finish to date, nearly a top 10 if it weren't for a late race incident.

David Newton
  (12:37 PM)

Yes, and the bigger news is Long apparently is dating the Alabama quarterback.

Alan (Columbus, OH)

Dave? Where are you?

David Newton
  (12:38 PM)

Airport bar in Scranton, Pa.

Awayne (Indy)

Does Sam Hornish have a legit shot at scoring a full time ride for Penske? How well does he have to run to win the spot?

David Newton
  (12:39 PM)

The job is his to lose. I suspect he'll need a few top 10s and avoid poor finishes. A win would all but lock him in, but that might be too optimistic.

David Newton

PJ (Boston, MA)

Hey Newt, any idea when Stenhouse will debut in a Cup car this year and how many races he plans on running?

David Newton
  (12:39 PM)

Haven't heard anything yet.

Alan (Columbus, OH)

Hi Dave! Why is it that the issues with Kyle's car are pretty much blamed solely on bad luck, however I rarely see the other top teams having similar issues. Broken shocks, blown engines, broken brakes, etc. seem less like bad luck and more like bad manufacturing.

David Newton
  (12:40 PM)

Well, JGR has shot itself in the foot a few times with bad engines and parts. Cost Kyle a few years ago in the Chase when he was having an amazing season. You're right, though, perhaps we use the term bad luck too loosely.

Alan (Columbus, OH)

Hi Dave! If Kyle was still at Hendrick, what would the past five years have been like?

David Newton
  (12:40 PM)

Hard to predict, but I suspect he would have won a lot of races.

Matt (Chicago)

Connecting the dots on your earlier comments, would Trevor Bayne in the 43 next year be a fit?

David Newton
  (12:41 PM)

Not sure Roush wants to give Trevor up to RPM. If that was a possibility it likely would have happened this year.

Rob F (Hoboken, NJ)

Hi Newt, is clean air still king? Gordon seemed to have as good a car as Johnson at Indy and Kahne said he was better than Johnson yesterday. Will the new car finally address this issue?

David Newton
  (12:42 PM)

Love the clean air comment. We'll find out some on the new car tomorrow at Martinsville, but probably not a lot since it's not an aero track. NASCAR is working around the clock to eliminate the "clean air" issue and create more passing. stay tuned.

Awayne (Indy)

Dangerous weather and large outdoor events are always dangerous, any thoughts on how to prevent tradgic outcomes?

David Newton
  (12:44 PM)

It's a tough one in NASCAR. Hard to convince fans and drivers to evacuate 30 minutes out, which likely would have been necessary on Sunday, when the skies still were sunny. I'm sure tracks and NASCAR will evaluate and see if there is anything they can do to assure this doesn't happen again. But I'm not so sure anything would have prevented what happened. The people injured still may have been hanging out around the cars in the parking lot.

Larry (MI)

Would have been nice for the 88 team if the rain would have come a little earlier. Can you imagine the conspriacy theories if they would have started this over today after the transmission issues.

David Newton
  (12:45 PM)

I highly doubt they would have started over, but interesting thought. And if they had started over, the team wouldn't be allowed to work on the car until the race began.

Awayne (Indy)

How much does the announcement that Matt Kenseth is leaving Rousch hurt there chances? Any signs that Rousch has started to shift some of the concentration away from the 17 ?

David Newton
  (12:46 PM)

Jack Roush likes Matt too much to hurt his chances. Plus, a title for Matt is a title for Roush and much needed money and notoriety for potential sponsor.

Kristin (NYC)

Assuming Hornish moves up to Cup, who would be his likely replacement in his NW ride?

David Newton
  (12:46 PM)

Not sure. Depends on which way Penske wants to go. Plenty of good young drivers available.

Rob (Memphis, Tn)

Why did NASCAR run all of those unnecessary caution laps waiting for the rain? There was plenty of time to get in at least another 2 or 3 laps of green flag racing. Oh wait, I know why! They wanted to hand Jeff Gordon the win so that he'd have a better chance to make the Chase. A Chase without Gordon is bad for business so it's an easy call to make. What a joke.

David Newton
  (12:47 PM)

There was rain on certain parts of the track. It's a big place. And I believe I heard them talking about removing speedy dry from a few areas.

Foster (Texas)

How about the 22 winning the truck race? RCR seems to have a great stable of young kids. The Dillon Boys and Joey.

David Newton
  (12:48 PM)

You're right about that. Lots of talent there. Plus the backing of a grandfather with the resources to be great.

Awayne (Indy)

Is the upcoming car changes ment to give the cars more fatory look more for fans or an attempt to keep factory dollars on the sport?

David Newton
  (12:48 PM)

A little bit of both. The manufacturers wanted more brand identity and the fans want to drive cars that look like those on the track.

Andy (MI)

With word that Penske will be using Roush Yates engines next year, are we getting to a point where all the engines from the major manufacturers will come from a single engine shop? (Ford=Yates, TRD=Toyota, Hendrick or Childress=Chevy)

David Newton
  (12:50 PM)

Getting close. And not 100 percent on Penske with Roush Yates engines, but I believe it will happen. It all hinges on Penske being able to sell his engine department, and I'm hearing with a stipulation he can buy it back if he feels the need to build his own engines again.

dz (new mexico)

have you watched any olympic beach volleyball?????

David Newton
  (12:50 PM)

A tad.

Kristin (NYC)

If RPM doesn't find another driver, you think Amirola's contract would be renewed? If not, where would he go?

David Newton
  (12:52 PM)

It's not set in stone he's gone. I'm just saying if Petty can get a Kurt Busch or Newman or somebody like that, he'd be crazy not to.

David Newton
  (12:56 PM)

Thanks for some great questions. Sorry we had to juggle the time and I was late due to technical difficulties. I'll be back on Thursday to answer more questions. And you can always ask me anything on Twitter at @Dnewtonespn.
