Chat with Jamison Hensley

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:00 PM)

Thanks for dropping by to chat. I'm at Paul Brown Stadium for Bengals training camp. Just talked to some players and coach Marvin Lewis. I will head out to practice at 3 p.m. So, let's start chatting.

cp (reno)

I'm sure you never hear this but what do you believe happens with Wallace?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:02 PM)

There's always a chance that he will sit out the first 10 games and take a hard-line stance. My feel for the situation is that he'll report the day after the third preseason game. That way, he'll have time to be ready for the regular-season opener. But no one really knows because Wallace and his agent aren't talking to reporters.

Andy in Hagerstown (Maryland)

I've been hearing good things about Kelechi Osemele at LT. If the McKinnie situation goes down hill can you envision the Ravens cutting him, picking up a veteran backup from cuts and going with Osemele at RT and Oher back at LT?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:04 PM)

KO is a big body. He is really massive. But he is still raw. I think the Ravens knew he was a year away and that's why they signed Bobbie Williams (KO was projected to be the LG). Barring injury, the Ravens will go with McKinnie at LT and Oher at RT. I'm interested in seeing how this plays out next year when McKinnie is gone. I still like KO as a guard more than a tackle. Jah Reid could be better suited at RT.

Brent (Lousiville)

How come all the "experts" are predicting the Bengals to regress this year? I understand the so-called sophomore slump with Dalton, but they didn't lose anyone important (Since when has Jerome Simpson been an irreplaceable #2 WR) and got better all the way around.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:06 PM)

When a team doesn't have back-to-back winning seasons since 1981-82, a lot of people are going to think the Bengals will regress. Not saying that's right because the Bengals are a better team on paper this year than last year. But you wanted a reason and that's a big one. Also, the team went 0-7 against playoff teams last year.

ryan (wilmington, nc) [via mobile]

From ur observation of josh gordon, could u ever see him having a randy moss type career. Both players had off field issues coming into NFL so again talent wise does he have the skills to have numbers like moss?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:08 PM)

To say Gordon is going to have a Moss-like year is putting a lot of pressure on him. That's just not realistic. When I was at Browns camp, he stood out with his size. You're not going to be able to play press coverage against him. I also liked how he attacked the ball. But there is still a learning curve with him. He played at Baylor, which didn't make him run a lot of different routes.

Garrett (Cincinnati) [via mobile]

What kind of impact will Dre Kirkpatrick have this year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:10 PM)

Kirkpatrick has to get back on the field first. A leg injury has sidelined him. He is probably two more weeks away from practicing. Before the injury, I thought he was a nickel back at worse to start the season. Now, he might not even be active for that game.

Scooter, minny [via mobile]

What r the browns going to do with colt mcCoy?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:11 PM)

I say keep him and make him the No. 2 QB. The Browns are probably going to see if he has any value as far as a trade.

Phil (Fairborn, Ohio)

Do you think the Browns will add a veteran LB with Gocong out for the year and injury-prone Fujita being suspended the first three games?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:11 PM)

If the Browns add a LB, it will come when teams make their final cuts. I don't see anyone out there right now who can help this team.

Cam from Middletown [via mobile]

James, I was pleased to hear DeCastro is struggling. The Bengals could have taken him but essentially traded him for G Zeitler and DT Thompson. How are they looking in Cincy? Cam

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:13 PM)

Zeitler has been working with the first team. He looks like a rookie out there at times. Zeitler needs more experienced. But he is tough.

Pedro (Rio de Janeiro - Brazil)

Since the Browns were willing to spend a 2nd round pick on Gordon, shouldn't they have used that same 2nd rounder for Mike Wallace when he was tagged as a RFA? They had the cap room for a long term deal with him, and I think they'd be much better off with Wallace than with a rookie who hasn't played a snap since 2010.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:13 PM)

Wallace had a first-round tender. So, Browns would have had to give up a first-rounder, not a second-round one.

Cory (NC)

So what are you thinking about Buirfict? Pleasantly surprised?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:14 PM)

Bengals like him a lot. And I mean a lot.

who's your pre-preseason pick for potential AFC North rookie of the year?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:14 PM)

Trent Richardson. That is, if he can hold up for the entire season.

Tom [via mobile]

Who has impressed you the most at camp? Also has Dalton impressed you or is he still struggling?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:15 PM)

I've only been to one practice. Dalton, Dunlap and Marvin Jones stood out. Shipley and Andre Smith struggled.

Why are so many fans and media types acting worried about Decastro stuggling early? they seem to forget he had no OTA's and were only two weeks into camp, Pouncey didnt start till the 3rd preseason game of his camp and he had OTA's.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:17 PM)

It is an overreaction. But Roethlisberger made this a story when he revealed that DeCastro told him about struggling in the physical part of the game. Let's see how DeCastro looks in a few preseason games before sounding the alarm.

Ryan (Cincinnati)

Are the Bengals content with the wide-out corps they currently have? Do you see any changes in the overall offensive scheme after the loss of Caldwell and Simpson?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:18 PM)

The Bengals are content with this group right now. If they can't get open in the regular season, they might have to see if they can upgrade this position.

mike (pa)

Does mike Wallace choose option a) play 2 years under tags and good luck getting paid in 2014 or b) sign for less than he could have got this offseason?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:19 PM)

Call me crazy, but I think he can still get a decent long-term deal with the Steelers.

Jon W. (Cincinnati)

What should Cincy fans be looking for from Dalton on Friday night?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:20 PM)

Who Dalton is throwing the ball to (other than A.J. Green). Whether it's Gresham or a wide receiver, he needs to find a second target.

Ryan (Baltimore )

Do you think Ray Rice will be a top 3 rb in the NFL with a older offensive line

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:21 PM)

It will be tougher to get yards on the ground with this group. But what makes Rice dangerous is the fact that he's more than a runner. He does so much in the passing game as well.

Brent Harshman (Pittsburg, KS)

Hey Jamison, love your work on this blog. What are your personal feelings on Antonio Brown and Mike Wallace? Who do you feel can give the best production long term?

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:23 PM)

This is a situation where they are great together but won't put up the same numbers if they play on different teams. My advice is don't split up the tandem.

Jamison Hensley (ESPN)
  (2:24 PM)

I'm going to have to cut the chat short unfortunately. There's a report that Browns CB Joe Haden could get a four-game suspension. Time to blog. Again, I apologize. Will chat next week.
